The Cuban Five; René González, Fernando González, Gerardo Hernandez, Ramón Labañino and Antonio Guerrero were wrongly imprisoned by the United States Government for collecting information in Miami that was important in safeguarding not only Cuba but the United States of America. During the period of their imprisonment, the Commission on Arbitrary Detentions of the UN Commission on Human Rights declared that the detention of the Five was arbitrary and illegal and therefore they should be released from prison. That was back in 2005.
The former President of the United States Mr. Jimmy Carter also described the trial of the Cuban Five as dubious.
In the Annual Report of 2011, Amnesty International made reference to the case and included it under the Section of Unfair Trials.
René Gonzalez and Fernando Gonzalez completed their unjust sentences and were allowed to return to Cuba where they are now settled and with their families. Gerardo Hernandez, Ramón Labañino and Antonio Guerrero and still languishing in American prisons in spite of habeas corpus submitted to the U.S. Courts since 2010. Because of their imprisonment they have had no real contact with their families in Cuba. This amounts to very inhuman treatment.
