  1. @ Greenie

There is no ‘may’ about this. We even have double-blind studies that clearly show that once mice were fed GMO for more than 90 days they sexual orientation was disrupted, developed carcinomas, developed genetic changes, changes in biochemistry. See why its better to face the big problem than bash those who otherwise persuaded. All men are in danger if we don’t do something about GMO. The industry is so smart that they stop their test before 90 days so that the results would suit them. If you want we can post the study referenced.

  2. @Pacha

The title of the blog is BU’s.

  3. Here is a Bajan Facebook Group named Bajans Against GMO and Monsanto which was started recently.

  4. The government better start weaning the country off imported foods as soon as possible if they don’t want a major health crisis on their hands, growing their own food would be much cheaper than having an over burdened healthcare system.

  5. Those mice are banned from Nigeria, they want your money not your rat-ass gay mice

  6. Still trying to confirm but understand Europe banned it today.

  7. Gotta keep this out of the Caribbean………….

“We even have double-blind studies that clearly show that once mice were fed GMO for more than 90 days they sexual orientation was disrupted … “.

And we have triple-blind studies that clearly show that once idiots were fed garbage for decades they lose the capacity to distinguish between “they” and “their”. The become subliterate idiots. And if you can’t write properly, you can’t think properly. Idiocy is a bitch, isn’t it?

  9. @ Jock Baumann

What are you really defended, an error in the english language you know so well. We make a lot of errors here all the time. We were never aware we had to type perfectly. If we told you that we can write the same thing in half a dozen languages, you would be the idiot then, No? So even idiocy is relative. Are you chill for Monsanto? Cu*thole

  12. @Pachamama

As you indicated the GM seed promoters like Monsanto et al intentionally do not do long term testing for any human health problems that might be brought on by consuming GMOs,

Most people in the USA and other countries, however, have in the back of their mind the naive belief that US government regulators like the FDA would not allow unsafe products to be put on the market and made available to consumers. So when many consumers go to the supermarket and put a box of commercial breakfast cereal, for example, into their shopping cart they are laboring under the misapprehension that the US government regulatory agencies are looking out for them and would not allow unsafe products to be packaged and widely sold in supermarkets across the land.

Most people are unaware of the extent that the FDA especially has whored itself out to US agri-business and seems more concerned about protecting the health of agri-business profit margins than the physical health of Joe and Jane Blow average citizen.

That process of turning over the business of protecting the health of the American public (and the public of many other less affluent nations who assume that if the USA’s FDA has approved it, it must be safe) to the tender mercies of avaricious, amoral, multi-national corporations is described in an article linked below:

Labeling Issues, Revolving Doors, rBGH, Bribery and Monsanto

    Snipped from above article:

Another example of the Government-industry revolving door is Margaret Miller, “In order for the FDA to determine if Monsanto’s growth hormones were safe or not, Monsanto was required to submit a scientific report on that topic. Margaret Miller, one of Monsanto’s researchers put the report together. Shortly before the report submission, Miller left Monsanto and was hired by the FDA [as deputy director of the Office of New Animal Drugs]. Her first job for the FDA was to determine whether or not to approve the report she wrote for Monsanto. In short, Monsanto approved its own report. Assisting Miller was another former Monsanto researcher, Susan Sechen” [28]. Here [29] you can read Robert Cohen’s testimony before FDA on the subject of rBGH including the disclosure that, while at the FDA and in response to increasing sickness in cows on the stuff, Miller increased the amount of antibiotics that farmers can legally give cows by 100 times. See also [30]. “Remarkably the GAO determined in a 1994 investigation that these officials’ former association with the Monsanto corporation did not pose a conflict of interest. But for those concerned about the health and environmental hazards of genetic engineering, the revolving door between the biotechnology industry and federal regulating agencies is a serious cause for concern” [31].

Note also these relevant quotes snipped from the same article:

“Monsanto should not have to vouchsafe the safety of biotech food. Our interest is in selling as much of it as possible. Assuring its safety is the F.D.A.’s job” – Phil Angell, Monsanto’s director of corporate communications. “Playing God in the Garden” New York Times Magazine, October 25, 1998.

“Ultimately, it is the food producer who is responsible for assuring safety” — FDA, “Statement of Policy: Foods Derived from New Plant Varieties” (GMO Policy), Federal Register, Vol. 57, No. 104 (1992), p. 229

“It is not foreseen that EFSA carry out such [safety] studies as the onus is on the applicant to demonstrate the safety of the GM product in question”. [77]. Comments from the European Food Safety Authority

In this area, the U.S. government agencies have done exactly what big agribusiness has asked them to do and told them to do” – Dr. Henry Miller, in charge of biotechnology issues for the Food and Drug Administration from 1979 to 1994 [78]

“It was an outcome that would be repeated, again and again, through three administrations. What Monsanto wished for from Washington, Monsanto — and, by extension, the biotechnology industry — got. If the company’s strategy demanded regulations, rules favored by the industry were adopted. And when the company abruptly decided that it needed to throw off the regulations and speed its foods to market, the White House quickly ushered through an unusually generous policy of self-policing. Even longtime Washington hands said that the control this nascent industry exerted over its own regulatory destiny — through the Environmental Protection Agency, the Agriculture Department and ultimately the Food and Drug Administration — was astonishing”. – from the New York Times article Redesigning Nature

Those first three quotes are quite illuminating, and I would say quite shocking. In the first one a Monsanto exec says, in effect, “It’s not up to us to guarantee the safety of the GMO crap that we are pushing on farmers and the public; that’s the FDA’s job to verify these things are safe to eat. Our responsibility is to sell as much of the stuff as we can and make the most money we can doing it.” Meanwhile the FDA tells us in the second quote, “Don’t look to us to guarantee that Monsanto’s crap is safe to eat. It’s Monsanto’s job to verify the products they are flogging to the public are safe.” And so apparently goes the thinking at the European Food Safety Authority.

Here is the link to the article.

Everything you said is correct. The corporations run everything. Corruption is rife, at the highest levels. All other considerations are quaint.

  14. So in the meantime Monsanto’s garbage is being approved by FDA who is made up of Monsanto people, the Caribbean better keep that garbage off it’s doorstep, some countries are not lucky. They are all pimps and prostitutes.

  15. Pachamama, May 30, 2013, at 8:55 PM, chooses to enlighten us:

“If we told you that we can write the same thing in half a dozen languages, you would be the idiot then, No? … Cu*thole.”

Así es, gillipollas, y que te lo den por el culo cabrón. Quieres decir la misma cosa en media docena de idiomas? Pues hazlo, mi querido tonto. But no matter how many languages in which you can express an idiocy, sigue siendo una tontería.

  16. What about your larger idiocy? You never referred to that. We would prefer to an ‘ass’ and a ‘bastard’ before we a blood sucking fu*king jew like you. Kiss your mother’s stinking pu**y

  17. Well Well said: the Caribbean better keep that garbage off it’s doorstep, some countries are not lucky.

The thing is the USA State Department has been put at the beck and call of Monsanto so that US diplomats can act as enforcers to arm twist into submission any countries who resist the efforts of Monsanto or other US based agri-business multinationals to further spread their GMO contamination around the world. I guess so far we in Barbados have not had to worry about coming under this type of diplomatic pressure by Uncle Sam to allow in GMO seeds (although we already get good doses of GMOs in the manufactured foodstuffs imported from the US and Canada) as we are probably such a miniscule market that. for now anyway, we are probably flying under the radar, so to speak.

    See this:
Taxpayer Dollars Are Helping Monsanto Sell Seeds Abroad
    Tom Philpott
    Mother Jones, May 18 2013

Nearly two decades after their mid-’90s debut in US farm fields, GMO seeds are looking less and less promising. Do the industry’s products ramp up crop yields? The Union of Concerned Scientists looked at that question in detail for a 2009 study. Short answer: marginally, if at all. Do they lead to reduced pesticide use? No, in fact, the opposite.

And why would they, when the handful of companies that dominate GMO seeds—Monsanto, DuPont, Syngenta, Dow—are also among the globe’s largest pesticide makers? Monsanto’s Roundup Ready seeds have given rise to an upsurge of herbicide-resistant superweeds and a torrent of herbicides, while insects are showing resistance to its pesticide-containing Bt crops and causing farmers to boost insecticide use. What about wonder crops that would be genetically engineered to withstand drought or require less nitrogen fertilizer? So far, they haven’t panned out—and there’s little evidence they ever will.

Yet despite all of these problems, the US State Department has been essentially acting as a de facto global-marketing arm of the ag-biotech industry, complete with figures as high-ranking as former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton mouthing industry talking points as if they were gospel, a new Food & Water Watch analysis of internal documents finds.

The FWW report is based on an analysis of diplomatic cables, written between 2005 and 2009 and released in the big Wikileaks document dump of 2010. FWW sums it up: “a concerted strategy to promote agricultural biotechnology overseas, compel countries to import biotech crops and foods that they do not want, and lobby foreign governments—especially in the developing world—to adopt policies to pave the way to cultivate biotech crops.”

  19. Monsanto’s Roundup Herbicide—Featuring the Darth Vader Chemical

It was “supposed” to be harmless to humans and animals—the perfect weed killer. Now a groundbreaking article just published in the journal Entropy points to Monsanto’s Roundup herbicide, and more specifically its active ingredient glyphosate, as devastating—possibly “the most important factor in the development of multiple chronic diseases and conditions that have become prevalent in Westernized societies.”

That’s right. The herbicide sprayed on most of the world’s genetically engineered crops—and gets soaked into the food portion—is now linked to “autism … gastrointestinal issues such as inflammatory bowel disease, chronic diarrhea, colitis and Crohn’s disease, obesity, cardiovascular disease, depression, cancer, cachexia, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, and ALS, among others.”

If you’ve already bogged down trying to work your way through the thick biochemistry jargon in the paper, this user-friendly but in-depth interview will give you great relief and insight.

    Wikipedia:
NaturalNews (formerly Newstarget) is a website dedicated to alternative medicine and various conspiracy theories, such as chemtrails,[1] the alleged dangers of fluoride in drinking water (as well as that of MSG and aspartame) and alleged health problems caused by “toxic” ingredients in vaccines, including the now-discredited link to autism.[citation needed]

It features guest authors such as Joseph Mercola and antivaccinationist Jon Rappoport, has featured interviews with Russell Blaylock, Sandor Katz and others. It defends Andrew Wakefield’s fraudulent 1998 study linking autism to vaccinations and is also outspoken against gun control, TSA screening procedures, GMOs, and claims that CT scans and mammograms cause cancer. It claims that mercury fillings are dangerous and need to be removed, and defends Scientology, but its primary purpose is the promotion of alternative medicine and (often controversial) nutrition claims.

Shawn Lawrence Otto mentions the site – specifically its discussion of the Vioxx controversy — in his list of references in his book Fool Me Twice, and New York Times reporter Christopher Kelly has mentioned Adams’ endorsement of Jim Marrs’ books.[2]

An article about conspiracy theories about the 2012 Aurora shooting in the Los Angeles Times mentioned an article on NaturalNews outlining such a conspiracy theory.[3]

Mike Adams, the self-styled “Health Ranger”, is the founder and owner of NaturalNews. According to his own website his interest in alternative nutrition was sparked by developing type II diabetes.[4] He is a raw foods enthusiast and “holistic nutritionist”. He eats no processed foods, dairy, sugar, meat from mammals or food products containing additives such as MSG[5] and has also contributed to Infowars.com.

Adams is an AIDS denialist, a 9/11 truther, a birther and endorses conspiracy theories surrounding the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. He has endorsed Burzynski: Cancer Is Serious Business, a movie about Stanislaw Burzynski. Steven Novella characterises Adams as “a dangerous conspiracy-mongering crank”[6]

It actually proves that if you eat rice, and that’s ordinary rice, not GM rice, micro dna gets into your cells. So that’s normal. That’s what all our bodies have done for ever. Its not some scary consequence of GM food.
And please don’t come back with the much discredited research about GM food harming mice.

  28. The heat continues on Monsanto.

Unapproved genetically modified wheat from Monsanto found in Oregon
By Steven Mufson, Thursday, May 30, 8:38 PM E-mail the writer
Japan, the largest market for U.S. wheat exports, suspended imports from the United States and canceled a major purchase of white wheat on Thursday after the recent discovery of unapproved genetically modified wheat in an 80-acre field in Oregon.
How the altered crop made its way to the Oregon field remains a mystery. The strain was developed by Monsanto to make wheat resistant to the company’s own industry-leading weed killer. Monsanto tested the type of altered seed in more than a dozen states, including Oregon, between 1994 and 2005, but it was never approved for commercial use.

“Nations and regions which want to stay free of genetically-modified crops will be banned from doing so under a devastating ruling by EU scientists.”
Much as I hate the non-science peddled by people like Mike Adams, I do think that each EU country should decide on whether to allow GM and on what basis. This ruling will be another difficulty for European integration.

I don’t mind having a debate about whether it is a good thing if weedkiller resistant GM crops should be in an Oregon field unannounced – my view is they should not, but please don’t try to tell me that GM crops are the work of the devil and will kill us all. That clearly is not true.

  31. And while you are at it, go ahead and read this too

The pro-GM lobby’s seven sins against science
Peter Melchett (Policy Director, The Soil Association)
    17 December 2012

The role that genetically modified (GM) food should play in our food chain is a highly contested political issues. One interesting facet of the debate in the past year has been the pro-GM lobby’s interest in staking the ‘scientific high-ground’; simultaneously positioning itself as the voice of reason and progress, while painting its opponents as unsophisticated ‘anti-science’ luddites, whose arguments are full of dogma and emotion, but lack scientific rigour. In this essay Peter Melchett explores how such crude characterisations are themselves based on logic that is itself profoundly damaging to the concept and representation of ‘science’ in our national culture.

Powerful forces in Western society have been promoting genetic engineering (now usually genetic modification – GM) in agricultural crops since the mid-1990s. They have included many governments, in particular those of the USA and UK, powerful individual politicians like George Bush and Tony Blair, scientific bodies like the UK’s Royal Society, research councils, successive UK Government chief scientists, many individual scientists, and companies selling GM products. They have ignored the views of citizens, and most sales of GM food have relied on secrecy – denying consumers information on what they are buying (20 US States are currently embroiled in fierce battles over GM labelling, strenuously opposed by Monsanto). Worse, they have consistently promoted GM in ways which are not only unscientific, but which have been positively damaging to the integrity of science.

This is, of course, an argument usually aimed at those who, like me, are opposed to GM crops. We are accused of being ‘anti-science’, emotional and irrational, and more recently, of being as bad as ‘Nazi book burners’ by the President of the National Farmers’ Union. This criticism has been effective in framing the debate about GM crops in the media in the UK, where the conflict over GM is routinely presented as a debate between those who are pro and those who are anti-science. This is reinforced by the fact that those selected to speak in favour of GM are usually themselves scientists (albeit often working for GM companies, or funded to work on GM crops), and those selected to oppose GM crops are usually environmentalists, farmers, or citizens concerned about the safety of the food they eat. Scientists who are critical of GM crops are almost never interviewed by the media.

    snip

Indeed, the basic science concerning the complexities of gene organisation and function suggests that natural breeding, often augmented with the non-GM biotechnology tool of MAS, is a far more powerful and productive way forward for crop improvement. Natural breeding and MAS not only preserve gene order and function, but allow the multiple gene systems that confer desirable properties such as higher yield,1 2 3 4 5 pest-6 7 8 9 10 and blight-resistance,11 12 13 and tolerance to drought,4 14 15 16 17 salinity,4 18 and flood,4 19 20 21 to be rapidly and relatively inexpensively22 bred into crops – something which is still only a distant dream for GM crop technologists.

    http://www.soilassociation.org/motherearth/viewarticle/articleid/4752/the-pr

Of course companies like Monsanto are not interested in non-GM breeding techiques, because going the GM path, they get to slap a patent on their seeds and make oodles of money while simultaneously using their money and influence to pull non GM seeds off the market and restrict farmers’ abilities to grow with competing non GM seeds, Not to mention, when the non-GM growing farmers have their non-GM crops polluted by wind driven pollen from GM fields, Monsanto can then use their corporate might to sue the pants off the non GM farmer for “stealing” their GM technology. That is an added impetus and incentive for farmers not to fight the increasing monopolization of the seed supply by the GM companies.

They don’t have the money or intestinal fortitude to spend a fortune on lawyers to deal with Monsanto and their goon lawyers threatening to take their livelyhoods away because their fields became polluted with unwanted GM genes through no fault of their own.

It’s much easier to just to keep their heads down and “go with the flow” and pay the Monsanto royalty. But it’s a joke to say that Monsanto is an example of free enterprise. It’s more like the local Mafia Godfather’s with his hitmen in tow advising the small store owner that if he knows whats good for him he should just pay up with the monthly protection charge, just in case something terrible happens.

  32. The soil association is just another company try to get you to buy their product,,, a highly biased source.

  33. GMO is not the work of the devil but could very well be the work of extremely evil and greedy human minds who would kill for profit………..let’s not blame the devil for what humans are capable of, the devil has no use for money, the devil is intangible.

  34. Anyone who is concerned about GMO is food should also be concerned about the following:

Mutation breeding – Where seeds are exposed to very high level of radiation or chemical mutagens to induce millions of completely random mutations. These plants are then bred using conventional breeding to make conventional varieties. This is considered to be conventional breeding. – No safety testing is required.

Interspecies crosses – contrary to what the anti-GMO advocates often spout, nature and humans have been making crosses between different species since life began, Wheat is a complex of three species, banana at least two. In potato breeding crosses are often performed to bring wild species into the domesticated varieties. these types of crosses can disrupt gene regulation and gene expression as much as GMO technologies and can introduce new allergens – No safety test is required.

None of our conventional food varieties have even been tested for their long term health effect.

No organic food have ever been tested for long term health effects.

None of the chemicals or the BT bacteria that the organic farmers use on their crops have ever been tested for long term health effects.

  35. What people have to realize is that a good chunk of the funding used to run many of the agricultural faculties at major universities in North America now comes from donations by the muti-national agri-business and GM promoters like Monsanto. Consequently if you as a professor in an agricultural faculty that accepts funding by a major agri-business/GMO promoter like Monsanto find problems with GMOs and want to do further research on the topic, you’ll find that the research grants just aren’t there for that type of work and/or the University makes sure to shunt you aside to ensure the money keeps rolling in from their sugar daddies.

Here is an interview with one such scientist:

Research scientist Dr. Elaine Ingham1 is internationally recognized as an expert on the benefits of sustainable soil science.

She was formerly an associate professor at Oregon State University and well on her way to full-tenure professorship when her research on genetically modified organisms (GMOs) led to her being forced to resign.

The biotech industry, led by Monsanto, funds a large part of the budget for Oregon State University, and her findings were not welcome as it threatened the University’s funding.

Dr. Ingham went on to develop a company called Soil Foodweb Inc., which helps farmers and gardeners understand the health of their soil. The company analyzes soil samples and also helps develop a composting plan that is specifically targeted for the plants you’re seeking to grow.

    snip

How Bt and Roundup Ready Plants Threaten Plant, Animal and Human Health

Take the genetically engineered Bt plants, for example. In these plants, a specific genetic material for a single toxin protein has been separated from the bacteria (Bacillus thuringiensis, or Bt) and placed into the genetic material of a plant, such as corn, soybean, and potatoes. Other Bt plants are also in the pipeline. According to Dr. Ingham, there’s very clear evidence of harm in animals that consume Bt plant material. They end up with severe ulceration, starting in the digestive system.

“We saw massive damage to the liver and to many of the internal organs in the body of those animals when we went to compare the Bt plant material fed to those animals versus non-Bt plant material fed to a herd that started out exactly the same. We’re seeing very clear effects,” she says.

Unfortunately, and tellingly, virtually none of this research is being done in the US because no one is willing to fund it, and patent laws effectively prevent independent safety research on patented seeds. However, research done overseas, in Australia and elsewhere, clearly show genetically engineered feed is causing severe health problems in animals. Yet there are no human studies to evaluate the health effects of eating foods that contain a protein toxin in every single cell…

“What’s the effect on human beings? We can show you what the effect is on animals. And it makes you really wonder if all the digestive problems we have right now might not be due to the fact that so much of the American public is ingesting this toxic protein,” she says.

Another genetically engineered type of plant is Roundup Ready plants, in which the plant material has been engineered to be resistant to glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup. With the advent of Roundup Ready plants, farmers have had to dramatically increase the amount of glyphosate used. The reason for this is because when you apply Roundup to the soil in massive quantities, it causes a significant reduction in all of the beneficial organisms in the soil.

According to Dr. Ingham, Roundup causes “a massive balloon” of bacteria in the soils, because glyphosate is a bacterial food. This bacterial overgrowth then takes up all the soluble inorganic nutrients that are present in the soil, leaving the plants stressed through lack of nutrition. To combat this, farmers apply more fertilizers to keep the plants alive, and before you know it, a truly vicious circle has been created.

“Every single genetically engineered plant has to be really examined very carefully for the effect that it has on the whole ecosystem – on the soil, animal health, and human health. We just don’t have the studies. They weren’t done. They weren’t required,” Dr. Ingham says.

Monsanto set to halt GM push in Europe

“We are no longer working on lobbying for more cultivation in
Europe,” Brandon Mitchner a representative for Monsanto’s
European branch, Tageszeitung, said in an interview set to be
    published on Saturday.

“Currently we do not plan to apply for the approval of new
genetically modified crops. The reason is, among other things,
low demand of the farmers,” he continued.

A spokeswoman for Monsanto Germany, Ursula Luttmer-Ouazane,
admitted that Monsanto recognizes that GMO crops were currently
not embraced on the European market.

    snip

A spokesperson for the German Ministry of Economy and
Technologies described the move as an “entrepreneurial
decision” which needed no further comment. The ministry
added, however, it has long made its opposition to gene
    modification technologies known.

“The promises of the GM industry have not come true for
European agriculture, nor have they for the agriculture in
developing and emerging economies,” the ministry said in a
    statement.
    (my emphasis /Green Monkey)

Eight national governments in the European Union have already
banned Monsanto’s MON810 maize and other forms of GMO cultivation
in their countries under an environmental protection provision
    known as the ‘Safeguard Clause’.

And even if it was not…don’t we all have spam buttons and is the loss of an -mail address not worth the gain of “clean” foods for us????…and even if we cannot make the whole island organic, we can insist on “clean”…leave out the pesticides for instance…there is no need…ROUNDUP is a killer…anyone noticed how much more cancers abound?? How our health bill has increased?? Well at least let us try and do something positive about it. And please…cuss eff ya want…call me all the names ya want…I ent care…just sign the petition… *smiling*

  40. How about us having a change from “free market” instead let’s mix in enough socialism to where we are not poisoning us and the planet trying to make a bloody profit. Our brains are large and complex enough for us to maintain some sort of balance here surely! Profit margines should not take up too big of a picture here.We are takling about living organisims here, like us! Food and medicine need be run not for profit but for life! The population is telling all good people to find ways to take better care of each other! The “Free market” is teaching us how to devour one another,I can expound albeit
reluctantly.Do we really need to learn new ways to devour one another! I am against gmo’s for a host of reasons but the main reason is that these people threaten sacred life on earth by bleeding seed for greedy rental and it is making us sick.We used to hear about contaminated crops as an act of sabotage! Now it’s for dow to go up! And we get to wonder in today’s profit mad food industry, who’s table it will end up on! That’s our food people! A telling fact is that gmo crops can ruin other strains (which took millions of years to develop naturally) and not the other way around! What about Mother Nature’s eons of lab work? Or our ancestors many lifetimes of careful cultivation just to pay it forward to us,shouldn’t they be considered as”patent holders”.I’ll leave it there, any thoughtful, patient comment’s I will do my best to answer.

  41. @Chris
Good post! real food for thought… when original man came into being earth was given to him with a set of given rules that man was to abide. the blue print was designed around natural.. we however over the years abandoned that blueprint ,,which our ancestors guarded. working and toiling the soil as nature intended and producing food that were important for good health, unfortunately the new generation which is known today as “modern man ” abandoned such theories ! and sold there inheritance out for what can be described as a bowl of soup and now have found ourselves in the predicament of being poisoned by those to whom we sold our inheritance to . as for the patent that too was sold to the new owners of this wicked and evil plot……

  42. Chris Colgrove………….Paper (money) has taken precedence over common sense, it has become the new god. Some of the millionaires and billionaires of this earth see themselves as it’s true rulers being they have become successful paper gods, they have more paper (money) than sense and intend to utilize it to make more paper (money) while retaining no commonsense.

  43. Free market invasion has opened up the most vulnerabilities known to mankind in the form of exploitation Plundering with wholsale and legalised posioning of one of natures and purest resources given to mankind “Mother Earth”. A resource which has now become much easy and accessible through “freemarket” sadly has succumbed to the ill effects as new avenues for exploitation and plundering take its toll on the land and its people…..god help us allll….

I appreciate the right of people to be opposed to GM crops.
Do not try to say, though, that it is scientifically based opposition. There is no proper peer reviewed scientific research that shows GM crops cause health problems.
Dr Elaine Ingham is quoted as saying: “We saw massive damage to the liver and to many of the internal organs in the body of those animals when we went to compare the Bt plant material fed to those animals versus non-Bt plant material fed to a herd.”
Publish the paper which proves this and let scientists look at it.

    @ ac
Man was not “intended to work and toil the soil as nature intended”. Agriculture was first practiced about 10,000 years ago. Before that we were hunter-gathers – that is our “natural” state..
Nothing about agriculture is natural. All the crops we grow have been bred over the years to be what they are – which is nothing like their natural ancestors.

And now some real science on genetic modification of body organs:
    New Scientist 4 May 2013:
“More than 200 people with heart failure are to receive a pioneering form of gene therapy to try to get their hearts beating properly again. “This is the first ever gene therapy trial to target heart failure,” says lead investigator Alexander Lyon of Imperial College London.
Heart failure results after damage to the heart muscle causes it to deteriorate, which in turn progressively weakens cells that govern heartbeat. The result is serious fatigue due to the heart’s inability to pump blood efficiently. Each year in the UK alone it affects 120,000 people who have never had the condition before, killing a third of them within 12 months.
Doctors will inject participants with harmless viruses that ferry a gene called SERCA2a into their heart muscle. The gene codes for a protein that recycles calcium within heart muscle cells, vital for driving each heartbeat and priming the next one.
In damaged cells, this recycling is impaired. By loading new copies of the gene the aim is to compensate for this decline. “The gene therapy will reset the calcium control,” says Lyon.
A preliminary trial of the same therapy three years ago in 39 people demonstrated that it is safe and delivers benefits. Those who got the highest dose of the virus, for example, spent only a tenth as long in hospital as those given a placebo (Circulation, doi.org/bzvxst). The impending follow-up trial will recruit 200 people split equally between the US and Europe.”
