Barbados barring no unforeseen event will be declared a Republic on the 30th November 2021. For many including this blogmaster, it has taken too long and with hindsight should have been part of the independence transaction in 1966. It is embarrassing to listen to some Barbadians in 2021 justifying why the Queen of England should be regarded as head of state even if in name only.

The two main arguments against moving to a Republic on the 30 November 2021 – insufficient time has been spent to socialize the republic construct with Barbadians to ensure it captures our expectations and to demystify many about the workings of the Barbados Constitution. The other argument – embarrassing though it is – removal from the protective cloak of England will expose Barbados to economic and ‘other’ threats.

It is an embarrassment after sinking billions of dollars in education with the hope of developing an enlightened people, there is a large segment of the population who lack the confidence to appreciate the freedom of the mind that comes with truly being free. What did the late Nesta Marley messaged years ago? – we must emancipate our minds from mental slavery …

The anticipation of walking into public buildings; schools and other places and not being subjected to looking at the face of Queen Elizabeth II prominently displayed on walls has created a ‘rush’ for the blogmaster. That foreign face will be replaced by soon to be President Sandra Mason, a daughter of the soil.

A word about the process. In the opinion of the blogmaster there is no blueprint to move to a Republic. Any path taken would have attracted criticism. The government has taken a decision of switching out the head of state with the promise to open the country to debating constitutional reform next year. To those who say it is a case of putting the cart before the horse, maybe. To those who suggest this is Mia Mottley padding her legacy, maybe. There are those like the blogmaster who are concerned Barbadians are some of the biggest procrastinators on the planet and needed a Mottley to bulrush this first step towards validating what’s we already are – a Republic. Uneasy lies the head that wear the crown…

The blogmaster is looking forward to the public debate as promised in 2022 about how we make the Barbados Constitution more relevant. For too long successive governments have promised to move this matter forward and failed. For too long although laying claim to be an educated people, too many Barbadians are woefully unaware of civic responsibilities enshrined in our Constitution. Hopefully when the time comes for public debate on constitutional reform, it will be as robust as the ongoing debate regarding the deletion of God replaced with Creator in the Charter of Barbados being debated in the House.

  1. I always hear the old people say, “Book sense ain’ common sense”. After reading this article, I appreciate the wisdom of these words. Time will tell……

  2. How about being tolerant of each other? How about being tolerant of different perspectives? This is the BIM we want, not the divisiveness we are seeing in far away lands. There is a reason the blogmaster finds room to accommodate many view points although it is abused by a few.

  3. Another beautiful day in Barbados!

Needless to say, I heartily concur with your article, David.

Self-respect is necessary if we want to move forward.

I have no doubts nor fears.

which begs the question why has Bu been publishing Heather and Grenville’s embarrassing negative nonsense winding up natives
is there no editorial control on the world wide web cowboy land and do spies love the shoot em up movie narrative where last man standing wins and is this whole world and life just a lab experiment, bad shit goes viral like secrets where one person tells tell two who tells two who tells two and so on and so forth until everyone has got covid

  6. Must you go down this line every time? If you have nothing to add to the blog move on.

While I agree with much of what you wrote, my concern has always been the move to Republic involves a ‘little more’ than replacing the reigning monarch with a local. The focus on the Creator, in what is an otherwise extensive document (charter) bears fruit to my concerns. That the LoO, given the retort by the GoB, was not aware of its contents until obviously very recently, opens the door for more extensive and important documents to be “discussed” in a similar fashion. “Here it is today, and by the way, we voting pun it tomorrow”.

  8. @NO

The blog acknowledges your concerns. The journey starts with the first step. Too long successive administrations have been jerking us around. A similar issue transparency legislation , since the 70s with Tom Adams. We have to move forward recognizing mistakes will be made – some tees will be missing a cross.

I appreciate the need for urgency, and to get the ball rolling. Yet, the level of accountability and transparency of recent administrations has be so bad, I have difficulty ‘trusting’ they will not similarly abuse their power here.

  11. Then we must be vigilant. It’s up or down to us.

Read all the stuff and make your contributions.

Northern Observer on the job would be a good thing. A cool head with open eyes.

  12. The narrative of every fairy tale story is

One upon a time in a faraway kingdom there lived a little boy (or girl) who had two friends..

But, a wicked witch ruled the land..

[fill in the plot story line here]

and the moral of the story is.. don’t fight evil, resist evil..

.. and they all lived happily ever after..
    THE END

    This is not the beginning
it is not even the the end
    there are many changes
    in this thing called life….

@David Blogmaster, you write in a very brief, exacting style that often tantalizes the pallet without providing a satisfying substantive meal!

1.Tantalizing … where is the meat?: ” it has taken too long and with hindsight should have been part of the independence transaction in 1966.”

Fah trute! What are your ingredients to substantiate that?

How in 1966 in the face of a changing British Empire and even more importantly the major dynamics of world politics (East-West tussle; surging industrialization geographic worries and much, much more) do you make that assertion!!

To forge our very own Republic at that time would have required awesome, detailed planning and SUPPORT. In the face of even a very divided nation (especially leaders) on this very question of the style and the benefits of independence how could we have achieved that.

Our lot was quite different to that of Guyana for example (given that same 10-10 😇 hind sight) and theirs didn’t work out to well, now did it!

Furhtermore fifty years later and we are STILL divided and talking absolute political nonsense but yet u assert as glibly as you did!

Offer a more detailed recipe on that comment … fah real!

2.Tantalizing…yet substantive 😇 : :… there is no blueprint to move to a Republic. Any path taken would have attracted criticism.”

As true as ‘night following day’ or is that ‘day following night’

In sum, confusion and disagreement in whatever we do or say!

    There is much merit in
“switching out the head of state with the promise to open the country to debating constitutional reform next year.”.

There is a strong argument to be made that the right horse is now properly pulling the cart thus providing valid and practical conditions fo reform our constitution.

To have a British leader atop us as we debate removing her and modifying our Constitution could be considered a NONSENSE , seems to me.

Oh, undoubtedly generations (of females particularly) will laud Motley as generations hailed Barrow … but just as many will know of her other legacy as a bullying, dictatorial megalomaniac too.

It’s left to her political adversaries to manage her political clout resulting from this momentous ‘adventure on our history’s pages … as Barrow’s certainly found a way to do!

God Bless Bim on Republic Day!

    Lata

Are you sure that statement is entirely accurate?

Or are ‘they’ the face(s) of the many GGs (and PMs) who have ‘acted’ as the Monarch’s representative and Chief Executive Officer?

You are right it’s high time the Head of State (HoS) of Barbados be a Barbadian for a Bajan could never be the HoS or PM of Britain.

Fifty-five years is long enough for Bajans to stand on their own republic feet devoid of monarchical medallions and uniforms.

Just hope Bajans are also prepared to jettison all the paraphernalia and ‘excess’ baggage which accompanied the Royal livery since Victorian times as permanently depicted in the façade on the wall of the Old Mutual building on lower Broad Street.

Long live the Republic of Barbados!
May the Sun never set on Barbados!

The billions wasted on miseducation cannot be considered anything but.

Cases in point. Almost everybody here.

That the population lacks wisdom and the courage to embark on a unique national project was purposeful, nothing else but a form of genocide.

those are seen as fighting words and not the progressive stance that it really is, no one can save those who DO NOT WANT TO SAVE THEMSELVES…..and no one is interested, certainly not me, in any Harriett Tubman role that’s 200 years old, we should be MOVING FORWARD, not regressing that significantly.

  17. @Dee Word

It would have taken courage for us to stop sucking at the nipples of the so-called mother country at a time it saw little value in the colonies? We have this inbred mentality that loitering on door steps where we are unwanted is cool.

Forgive if the blogmaster prefers to be concise above prolixity.

    Please!

  18. @Pacha

A nugget of wisdom was extracted from your comment although cloaked with the usual hyperbole.

  19. Interesting that the first line of the Preamble reads “RECOGNISING the importance of the pledges we make towards one another to
securing the peace and ensuring the foundation for prosperity and enfranchisement;”. How does this sit with the Government default on its debt?

  20. We should call it the republic issue!

    $125m bond offer

BARBADIANS’ APPETITE for investing in Government securities is being tested three years after the domestic debt restructuring cost local bondholders millions of dollars in losses.
The Central Bank has issued a new $125 million treasury note, and Governor Cleviston Haynes is hopeful that local pension plans, other institutional investors and individuals buy the new bonds.
With Government having relied heavily on foreign borrowing as economic activity collapsed during the pandemic, he said the bonds were being sold to help “finance the economic recovery from the COVID-19 shock”.
Haynes also wants pension plans to invest more of their funds in Barbados in other areas, including environmentally-friendly instruments like green bonds, as part of their contribution to domestic economic activity.
The new bond offer opened on Monday, has an interest rate of 4.25 per cent and will mature in 2026. The notes are available from $1 000 and up and will be issued on December 1.
Haynes invited pension plans to be among investors buying the bonds yesterday while addressing the Investment Policy Review For Pension Plans online forum hosted by local actuarial consulting firm Eckler.
He said the $125 million treasury note was the first major debt instrument Government was offering since the 2018 debt exchange and was “targeted to all investors”.
The Governor also said the bonds “represents the first step towards restoring normality to the domestic capital market while creating greater balance between new domestic and external funding.
“Potential investors should note that new debt issuance is consistent with the macroeconomic framework under the programme with the [International Monetary Fund], and is in line with the medium term debt trajectory with aims to reach 60 per cent by fiscal year 2035/36,” the economist explained.
“In this regard, as the economy recovers, Government will revert to its programme of fiscal consolidation through primary surpluses, enabling the temporary increase in the debt ratio to taper off as Government continues to honour its debt obligations.”
Haynes said the authorities hoped the public will see “there has been a material change in the environment for investing and therefore that they would be willing to buy into securities that are being issued by the Government.
“We have to get the pricing right, we have to get the maturities right, but only time will tell whether or not we have returned to a true state of normalcy,” he added.
Fortress Fund Managers chief investment office Peter Arender, who made a presentation at the Eckler event, said the mutual fund manager had acquired some of the restructured bonds.
Regarding the new bonds, he said they “would be open to looking at anything at the right levels”.
“I think the positive things that have gone on in Barbados in a very difficult situation have been progress on the spending controls. There are definitely some reforms in terms of some of the ease of doing business in some ways, and I think the presence of the [IMF] programme has not been a rounding error. So [it’s a] tough time, we can’t deny it,” Arender said.

  21. @ David November 24, 2021 9:02 AM

It would be interesting to see how much of the new bond(s) to be issued by the Central Bank Bajans are prepared to take up.

It would be a measure of the confidence of well-off Bajans (and corporate entities, especially the credit unions) have in the financial viability of the new republic.

What’s the sense of having money sitting idly in a bank account earning less than 1 % interest when they can get a 4.25% ROI from the GoB?

BTW, did you hear Santia Bradshaw’s contribution to the Charter of Barbados debate?

Wasn’t it excellent and an outstandingly positive outlook for a future Barbados where people are still ‘fighting’ over the difference between God and Creator?

She summed it all so beautifully in her reference to the universally applicable “Golden Rule”.
‘Do unto others what you would want others to do unto you.’

  22. @Miller

    Absolutely.

With negative return from banks and little opportunity for investment there is a demand for investment opportunities.

@David, all I would say (immediate forgiveness begged of @Donna on drifting to this reference 😇) … is that I hope you present appropriate “prolixity” wid de wifey. .. oration of course, if u dare! 🤣

Generally speaking yes being concise is desired often but details of the prolix are also much needed at times!

I don’t think conditions (even considering the Brits wanted to kick us to de curb) were ideal or even practical for Republican status back then. Not for our 166 and smile wide ‘village’!

    Be safe.

  24. The Miller
    Yours is a mute point.

Should the partners of government, ie the barons within the socalled private sector, not subscribe

Then the CB itself with the requisite permissions of the IMF will print the paper to buy. David thinks that this is founded in wisdom.

    David
What hyperbole? Do you presume that Bajans are not generally well credentialed idiots lacking the courage to even think critically without peeping ’round the corner to see who nearby.

  25. @ David

Let me correct you and say there is a demand for SAFE AND GUARANTEED investment opportunities. The question is does government paper still fall under this category?

  30. We removed the Queen.as Head a step in the right direction
Too many administration have veered down that path and stop.
    Xxxx
Maybe those administrations prefer to do there homework before stepping in to a high water without a safety belt
Also having good reason and a knowledge of pro and cons before going forward with haste
What all should be asking is why these past govts did not move Barbados forward into becoming Republic with the same haste this govt is doing
What does this govt know that is better for country than past govt did not have a knowledge
    Yes Sir and Madam
Most are not against Barbados becoming a Republic
However Barbadians have been calling on govt for answers
Calling on govt to be part of the process
Now what we see is a lack of trust between govt and people on this issue as govt head fast and furious into Barbados becoming a Republic
What should have been a peaceful process between govt and people has been mired in doubt confusion and a lack of trust
    Happy Independence Day
May the Republic of Barbados become a guide and a shining light by which Barbadians can find and pursue a path towards self empowerment guided by a mirror image of importance determination and self respect of themselves and as such those qualities the Rght Hon Errol Barrow would have wanted to see

  31. David
Well, being an eternal pragmatist in all things will leave us in the unenviable national disposition of fooling around with quaint notions about independence and republicanism as bandaids for a ruthless, hidden, monarchy deep within the national psyche, as is the enduring racism as a national point of conservatism, and as committed to Whiteness as slaves were made to be. Did you, David, not publish the drivel by that iconic national idiot Grenville Phillips just yesterday? Or will you seek now to hide under the misbegotten rock of an unfreedom of speech?

  32. @Pacha

BU will share contributions from all comers for comment. It does not mean opinions shared accord with those of the blogmaster. You know the drill.

  33. What sense does it make to stifle opinions? Once it is not outright lies, it should be published.

Grenville has a right to his opinion. We have a right to critique.

Citizens have a right to decide which opinion holds merit.

If you start to stiffle dissenting opinions then you are on a dangerous path to having your own opinion stifled.

  34. MY MAJOR CRITICISM OF THIS BLOG DAVID IS YOUR POOR CHOICE OF PHOTO OF SANDRA
THIS PHOTO DOES NOT REALLY DO JUSTICE TO HER BEAUTY
AND SHE IS QUITE A NICE PERSON ALSO
I AM PLEASED WITH HER ELEVATION

  35. Like medieval theologians we 21st century Bajans too love to argue about how many angels can dance on the head of a pin.

Love one another. Be kind to one another. That includes the people who are living in the house with you. It does not exclude others.

When last have any of you been kind to anyone who is not related to you by blood or marriage?

  36. @David “…removal from the protective cloak of England…”

But hasn’t England spend considerably more time oppressing us that protecting us?

Isn’t expecting protection from England somewhat like expecting the arsonist to pull out his water hose to help put our your house fire; or like expecting your rapist to give you a lift to the police station and the doctor?

Not my wise words as I am only a Silly Woman and a Cuhdear Bajan.

“When someone shows you who they are, believe them the FIRST time.” Maya Angelou

  39. @David November 24, 2021 8:48 AM “It would have taken courage for us to stop sucking at the nipples of the so-called mother country…”

David you got it entirely wrong.

It was not us that was sucking on the nipples of the “mother country”

it was the “mother country” that was sucking on our nipples. It was the “mother country” who sucked our blood. It was us that the “mother country” sucked not only milk [and sometimes this milk was literal when black enslaved women had to breast feed white English and white Bajan children to the detriment of their own infants] but also sweat, blood and tears, until even now the average Bajan does not own 10,000 square feet of land, nor have $10,000 in savings.

    Bad, bad, bad mother.

If any if our biological mothers had treated us the way the “mother country” treated us we would have cursed her RH and damned her to hell.

  40. ACTUALLY THE VERY BEST MEDIEVAL THEOLOGIANS KNEW AND PRACTICED THE TENETS OF 2 TIMOTHY 2:15 AND NEHEMIAH 8:8 AND ISAIAH 28:IO, SO THAT THEY COULD ACHIEVE THE OBJECTIVE OF 2 TIMOTHY 2:2.

THEY ESPOUSED AND PRACTICED THE WHOLE COUNSEL OF GOD, THEY DID NOT CHERRY PICK A FEW NICE SOUNDING VERSES FROM HERE AND THERE, OUT OF CONTEXT.. THEY ENUNCIATED TRUTH FOLLOWING WHAT IS CALLED COOPER’S LAW.

TODAY THE BEST THEOLOGIANS DO THE SAME, AND THANKFULLY ONE CAN READ THE RESULT OF THEIR INTENSE SCHOLARSHIP ONLINE ON MANY VERY GOOD WEBSITES LIKE PRECEPT AUSTIN, ARTHUR PINK, GUZICK, BOB DEFFINBAUGH, ETC

THIS IS SOUND DOCTRINE THAT CAN NOT BE REFUTED

NOW FRANK CAN YOU SEE THE CONNECTION? WHAT YOU SEE AS A RABBIT HOLE WAS INTRODUCED INTO THE CONVERSATION, AND I AM QUITE PREPARED TO FOLLOW, AS ONE DOES EXTEMPORANEOUSLY EVERY SUNDAY MORNING FOR YEARS PRE COVID

THIS TOO IS SOUND DOCTRINE THAT CAN NOT BE REFUTED

THE PASSING ON OF SOUND DOCTRINE IS NEEDFULL IF THE REPUBLIC MUST SUCEED

JUST LOOK WHAT HAS HAPPENED IN THE USA WHEN THEY THRE AWAY SOUND DOCTRINE AND STOPPED OBEYING THE FUNDAMENTAL TENETS OF 2 TIMOTHY 2:15 AND NEHEMIAH 8:8 AND ISAIAH 28:IO
WHEN IT SAYS THAT HE CREATED MALE AND FEMALE IT MEANS THAT HE CREATED MALE AND FEMALE

HE DID NOT CREATE HEMAPHRODITES OR THIS WOULD BE A MUCH MORE PREVALENT OCCURENCE

HE DID NOT CREATE WICKERS AND BULLERS.EITHER IF HE HAD THERE WOULD NOT BE THE INJUNCTIONS AGAINST SUCH IN ROMANS I OR IN REVELATION. A RATIONAL MIND CAN SEE THIS.

  41. Battering Down Sentence

    Good Morning Blue Dragons,

It is another day in paradise,
So what are we going to do today that is different,
How are we going to uplift everyone around us,
How are we going to bring peace, joy and happiness,
To those people that we care about,

Well today I am going to give you a couple of tips about lifestyle,
    And, about Qi (Chi) Flow,
So, lifestyle is what you choose it to be,
But, your lifestyle either creates illness
    Or, Wellness,

Now, if we want to look at illness,
    It starts with accumulation,
So, the accumulation is over eating, over drinking,
    over working, over doing,
    and. then that becomes stagnation,
which is not enough rest, not enough exercise,
    not enough sleep,
and then that transform into inflammation,
    and then inflammation becomes disease,
    so that’s the process,

Now this accumulation could be a weight gain,
or it can be a mucus in the head,
    causing dizziness,
    and poor balancing,
    coordination,
It could be puffiness in the face,
    It could be breakouts,
    It could be adult pimples,
There are so many different symptoms of accumulation,

    And then stagnation feels like,
I don’t feel like working out,
    my knees hurt,
    my legs are hurting,
    I am not motivated,
    I’m stuck,
    I’m depressed,
So stagnation also has multiple symptoms -ology,

    And, then inflammation,
could be boils, or a ah..
    what’s that thing you get,
    hemorrhoids,
    so inflammation shows up as
    flaky scalp,
    bad breath,
so there is a ton of symptoms,
    associated with inflammation,

Now what does that I have to do with Qi Flow,
So the basis of Chinese Medicine, is predicated,
on the flow of Qi and Blood, and what is Qi,
the electromagnetic energy, that flows through the body,
like blood flows through the veins,
So, the Qi and the blood flow together,
    The Qi moves the blood
and the blood pumps the heart,
Now we think the heart pumps the blood,
But in actuality, it is your diaphragm,
that pushes your air, out of the lungs,
    that causes blood pressure,
and heart rate to go up,
so, your breathing is critical to your heart rate,
as a matter of fact, you can’t separate
the heart and the lungs the two organs
    because it is one system

    (full stop)
    .

Why do you keep referring to your god Yahweh as “HE” meaning the MALE gender?

How do you know your god is a “HE” man and not a ‘SHE’ woman? Or even an ‘IT’ being an extraterrestrial?

If your god is male then his opposite number, the devil or Shaitan, has to be Female, not so?

BTW, your creation story about Male & Female runs counter to the story about Eve being born from the rib of a man called Adam with the remnants of an umbilical cord born of a woman.
