I think Benn is a good candidate, but for another constituency.
He is capable, down to earth, knowledgeable in many areas but he did not make a success of his stint in the Ministry of Agriculture. However, hardly any Minister has ever made a success of that Ministry. In his new Ministry there does not seem to be any outstanding achievements so far.
But the work on the ground in St Peter will probably be the deciding factor. Has Haynesley done or can do enough of the hard door to door slogging that will make the difference? Has he employed or visibly helped enough people in his constituency during this economic crisis? Has Owen Arthur or his surrogates been doing their homework on the ground assiduously? Does his exposure as Opposition leader allow him to maintain his lead?
Inputs from constituents will be necesary to gauge more clearly how this battle will turn out. Will it be close or will it be a landslide? The overall economic situation and the work on the ground together may be the determining factors.

David; I don’t think so. There’s many a slip betwixt the cup and the lip.
Of course the favourite by far must be Owen Arthur. But if Owen, for whatever reason, was not doing his homework in the constituency and if he does not have access to the kind of resources which would have ensured victory during his tenure as PM, and if the Haynesley Benn has ensured that he is personally associated in the minds of constituents with certain improvents of importance to them, the odds might get closer. AS the elections get closer and people post their experiences here with the candidates it will become clearer and clearer if there will be the expected landslides or if there are chances for closer results.
By the way. I think the responses today have exceeded my wildest imagination. If they continue in this train up to the election, I think you would have got a winner.

I think Owen Arthur is one MP who keeps close to his constituency, so he may have no fears this time around.
If Benn can’t even control the price of corn beef….you think he could effect any change at all in St. Peter ? Alike Patricia Simmonds…he facilitating the democratic process, and doing it with a smile….
What has the DLP done to assist Benn in trying to challenge Owen? The Jetty at S’town, has been in bad shape for over a year, roads that were under repair during the BLP regime are still to be finished. Added to that Benn himself , who used to be very close to the constituents, is now either too busy, or arrogent to find time to socialise with his people. Owen, now that the weight of government is off his shoulders, is finding more time to do like DT and find himself in the rum shops and people’s homes. If Benn didn’t beat him last time, his chances now is very slim, now that there is a swing away from the DLP.

The final election result shows the BLP winning 29 seats , the DLP GAINING NO SEATS and an independent candidate, a former member of the DLP winning the other seat Meanwhile former Prime Minister Stuart who lost his seat to a returning Noel Lynch said that he would retire from elective politics.

The New Barbados Kingdom Alliance will be having a political meeting at Six Mens, St. Peter at 6pm today Saturday 16th February, 2013. They will then be going to Boscobelle, St. Peter for another meeting which is supposed to start at 9pm.
