  1. At the constituency level the incumbent seems to have some problems, Durant-Callender has a greater community presence and appeal.I give her the edge

  2. @JB

Can you share what you believe are the problems?

  3. Some problems may not be enough to overcome a 1000+ vote deficit, especially since he managed to do it against an incumbent. Durant-Callender will need to step up her game ten fold if she’s to stand a chance.

Advantage – DLP, (by an oomph even with a swing)

    David,

    Arrogance!

  5. @ Observing
That 1000+ votes was almost totally eroded when he told the people in the largest, poorest part of the constituency that they like too much begging, then proceeded to relocate his office (away from them). Ignored and disrespected his supporters who are now out there saying he can’t get their vote. My girlfriend was one of those people. Made extravagant promises which he never even tried to address……. and the list goes on

  6. The BLP spindoctors predicting election results – I think they will be in for some very unpleasant surprises. It is intersting that the quality or lack thereof of the BLP candidates is sooo piss poor that they hoping that a global recession would lead people to run into the BLP camp even though they offer no solutions, just nuff criticism.
Bajans are not stupid and Lashley is one of the hardest working ministers that this country has seen in the last 20 years. I beleive that he has the heart to go very far in politics and is definitely one for the future- educated, tenacious, caring and a Lodge school man!

  7. @!

Do you deny that there will be a swing against the government come next general election?

  8. @!
Don’t be so quick to dismiss Markam. I share some of his sentiments though I don’t think it’s enough for Durant-Callender to swing….Also,

“Lashley is one of the hardest working ministers that this country has seen in the last 20 years.”

This does not guarantee victory in your constituency.

  9. David, let me put it this way- I beleive that a good case can be made for many of the steps that the Government has taken to stabilise the economy, It is very similar to Barack Obama – the ethusiasm factor is always hard to maintain during recessionary times and there is no doubt that some people will be discouraged.
However, what is the alternative – The BLP has not put forward one solution or new idea for sustainable growth.Bajans are not stupid and a examination of the worst BLP slate of candidates in recent memory will show that the BLP’s political opportunism will not equate to any improvement in the lives of Barbadians.

  10. Being a hardworking Minister and being seen on TV does not translate into votes at constituency level. To the contrary the constituents get annoyed and say: ” I only seeing he on tv”. That is why some very high profile and sometimes hardworking ministers lose their seats and badly too! There is a saying : “All politics is local” . that is why I predict a major upset in this constituency!

  11. Can some one from Minister Lashley camp explain why he is insisting on constituents calling him Mr Lashley?

There is the complaint that as minister responsible for Sports and Culture when constituents in a certain heavily populated area asked him for support for a sporting and cultural function, he turned them down. Yet his opponent with limited resources put together something for the constituents after she was approached by them.

There is also the criticism that Lashley is a micromanager when his role in the NCF is appraised. The Governor recently reported that there was no additional increase in tourism or spending as a result of the world heritage designation. To what extent will these matters create a tow on Lashley’s campaign?

This man is my representative and I only see him on CBCTV (aka DLPTV) since he came to my gate to ask for my vote in 2008. When truth be told, his stint as Minister responsible for the NCF will be his undoing. The man is an egotist, he only says I and my. He is busy now in the constituency, I have seen him at three funerals recently. I still think he may win even though this should really be a BLP seat.

Now that would be a travesty.

  14. I understand that Durant-Callender has been quietly making an impact on the ground and in real guerilla style is keeping low but endearing herself to the constituents. Unlike Lashley she is seen as warm, friendly, genuine and a true community worker. I predict a major upset here!

  15. Mr. Lashley is disliked in all of his ministries. His problem is a personality trait that has gotten negative reviews from his constituents.

Furthermore, how busy can he be busy right now in the constituency when he has to micromanage Crop Over???

His opponent on the other hand is seen as someone who can be called upon to fill in where he is failing miserably…

  16. @JB
    ““All politics is local””

    So true.

Lashley does have some traits that put him at risk of losing the constituency. we’d have to see how much of that 1000 margin was “anti-Joe” vs. “pro-stephen”

Historically its a tie for party representation. Don’t know (of) Mrs. Durant Callender so we’ll see but 1000 is a big turnaround to victory in any constituency

  17. whatever mr stephen lashley’s shortcomings, i will avoid the callender connection. their loyalty is questionable.

  18. Markham; re your 8.51 am post. I can somewhat corroroborate your suggestion that Mr. Lashley is disliked by his workers, even the senior ones. More than one such worker has told me, unasked, that he thinks too much of himself and is petty, picky and puerile.

A picture just flashed thru my mind…a duck hunter taking aim with a 12 gauge(3mm shot) .. at a lame duck name ” Empire Won’t Strike Back “. I hear Bruggadung…feathers flying all bout D place…D duck hunter was out Callender’s..

Callender is a TOP SHOT…I hear..

  21. Stephen Lashley gets the job done – He is a hard worker and sets a high standard. That is the kind of MP and representative that people want.Successfully leading the fight internationally for Barbados’ World Heritage status,Stephen Lashley is a winner.
If you want to talk about MP’s and persons around them, ask many civil servants what they thought of Owen Arthur’s behaviour and language towards them.
Lashley is a worker and is the best person for the constituency and the country. He will win this seat.

  22. @!
“Stephen Lashley gets the job done

Does he get it done in CCWC??

  23. @!
Owen?? Tyrannical ‘,despotic. Ask anyone who attended his meetings! Then again dont forget the”gag”that was on the call in programs. As you began to speak CUTT…
Dont mind these one-sided talk shows and newspaper they have now; there is now freedom of speech so much so that certain hosts and writers could lambaste even thePM and encourage others to or to criticize in the worst way! Can you remember that happening under Owen ?
I maybe young but Idont remember such blatant abuse sometimes closely bordering on disrespect to a PM!! If owen is returned we will see if this happens!!
    I know better tho!

  24. Margaret who? i think she might be best know to her family and few friends now come doesnt have a ghost chance against lashley.

  25. @ ac The people in Christ Church know Margo Durant-Callender so don’t pretend. She went to school in the area, did community work in the area, and is well connected throughout the area. She has taken Christ church West Central by storm. She has grabbed the hearts of the people already. She is like a chemical weapon.

  26. Before January 2008 people in CCWC were asking “:Stephen who? A man from St. John?? who he??” He won the seat. They still didn’t know him until he was made minister and became a movie star (2010). But you know what? They don’t want to see him on TV. They wanted to see him in CCWC explaining why he went AWOL. Too late now!! I know….. He’s my representative . We going wid de woman
