David; re. your 4:41 am post;

You are correct but I have indeed considered that cohort of the population.

The reason that the US experts are beating the drum for testing, testing and more testing is to get a handle on what proportion of the general public has been compromised by the virus in any way and has left its signatures in body fluids including blood in the population. The virus is shed from the infected body as the disease is brought under control. When it is controlled it has been found that it takes around 7 days for all particles to be shed from the body. Infected persons are released back into the community when they test negative twice over a period of 2 days.

Barbados, like all of our island neighbours, did or does not have access to large numbers of tests and had to use what we had very sparingly. Thus, the only measure that we had for gauging the incidence of the virus in the population (and a very imperfect one, at that) might be by comparing the evidence of infection levels hinted at by a comparison of the graphs of the progress of the various Covid-19 outbreaks in our Islands.

Most of the world was in the same position as the Caribbean and used the data obtained by the minimal testing of infected people and their contacts and their contacts to produce the graphs we see on such sites as WHO and Worldometer etc. All these graphs give an imperfect picture and significant underestimation of infection levels in the county or country in which the tests are carried out, but, since they are carried out in the same way in each country they might provide some rationale for guesstimating the comparative levels of the infection in various groups of countries.

The data shows that, starting out at essentially the same levels, there was some divergence in relation to the rate of infection and therefore progress of the various outbreaks in various countries. The graphs for Barbados showed low and declining levels of infection from the beginning, peaking at the level of 13 positive cases per day and thereafter showing a slowly declining trend. The individuals who would have contributed to the declining trend would have been primarily from the contact testing but should also have included other individuals referred by Health professionals or who presented themselves to Government institutions because of concern that their symptoms might point to untimely death due to the dread Covid-19.

Amit, in an earlier post on this blog, reported on his initiative of graphing Covid-19 incidence over weekly periods throughout the epidemic, in several Caribbean Islands. If David thinks it is appropriate and Amit agrees I can post a subset of graphs clipped from his data for 6 Caribbean territories which I think could illustrate some of what I have presented above.

  1. Effective December 31 to January 14, Barbados will be under curfew from midnight until 5 a.m. each day, but Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley has told Barbadians to pause, not panic.

In addition, all commercial fetes have been cancelled.

Mottley announced the curfew today after chairman of the Cabinet’s COVID-19 Sub-committee Senator Dr Jerome Walcott said that Barbados had recorded ten new cases of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).

It is as I was saying all along. We have been fooling ourselves with this Mask, Sanitise, Test, Isolate and pray somebody out in the wild that has it does not have to get tested strategy.

We need an outpatient strategy first and foremost starting with: If you test positive and do not require hospitalization, stay home and take this cheap drug/vitamins cocktail for the next week and call us if your symptoms get worse.

Test and Treat At Home Early needs to be our primary strategy. Hospitalization at Harrison’s point for the serious cases or persons preferring to be monitored or isolated.

  3. The fear now would be if any of the new cases are the more contagious strain found in the UK this month.

As all the experts in the USA have been preaching masks and social distancing is the key. If you look at the nonesence that went on at paradise beach should we expect any different? As Dr Fauci said up to yesterday the mask only work if you wear them. For those that think the masks don’t work, I suggest you speak with any distributor on the island for cough and cold medication. They will tell you this year sales are down due to lower transmission from mask wearing.

  4. @David
    It was bound to happen
    +++++++++
Are you sure? Was that based on some self- fulfilling prophecy? Someone or some persons dropped the ball, the evidence is there from the videos and still photos of the activities on Boxing Day.

Let’s hope that we can corral it before it gets out of control.

  5. @Sargeant

How can you prevent idiots from breaking quarantine before results are known? Once you made the decision to allow potential Covid infected traffic in the risk was present.

  6. @Sargeant

The Covid Monitoring Unit cannot be everywhere at once. Social media did its job by highlighting. The PM has done her job by putting the breaks on the slapdash attitude.

  7. The blogmaster did a spin and many if the supermarkets are jam pack. Barbadians are preparing for the worse.

  8. LOVE Island star Zara Holland was arrested as she “tried to flee” Barbados with boyfriend Elliott Love after he tested positive for Covid-19.
Caribbean cops swooped on ex-beauty queen Zara, 25, and her fella as they allegedly tried to board a plane home to avoid being admitted to a quarantine facility….(Quote)

  9. How many more outbreaks must be necessary before govt take these warning signs with all seriousness
This 166 cannot afford a serious outbreak such should happen our health system would totally collapse
This just might be the end where Three strikes and your out take foot hold
Covid is not as easy to control when clusters begin to infect a whole society

  10. People must also take responsible by practicing the declared health protocols.

  11. @ Mariposa December 31, 2020 5:35 PM

I’ll put forward a thesis that has yet to be verified: the Corona outbreak is centered on Dodds because corrupt officials there may have cooperated with international drug cartels. You get infected when getting drugs at the seaside …

It has nothing to do with tourism, but a lot to do with corruption cultivated by the DLP.

  12. “If you test positive and do not require hospitalization, stay home and take this cheap drug/vitamins cocktail for the next week and call us if your symptoms get worse.”

So I arrive home to visit my 10 relatives and test positive..
    What is the cocktail?
I should not wear masks, what about my relatives?

  13. People do what people do
Govt cannot control people emotions with harsh fines and ankle bracelets
Take for example the guy who would be sentence to six months
He tells the magistrate he went to a store to buy food after waiting for the isolation centre to get him something to drink
What must he do wait forever for the drink or be guided by his feeling to be fed

  14. This was a fear we all had, but with sound protocols, strict adherence to the protocols, wearing masks, hand sanitizing and social distancing, we may yet survive this.

Ideas are needed. The two below need additional thought.

Visitors will not wish to travel to the island and not visit the beaches… A safe way for visitors to access sea, sun and sand must be found…perhaps restricted access (time and location) to designated beaches near to quarantine areas.

Shopkeepers should be able to deliver packages (e.g. fanta) to an area near the gate of a quarantine area. Transactions should be cashless..

Your 10 relatives can choose to take the cheap drug/vitamin cocktail too if they so choose to. The cocktail can be taken by anyone at risk of serious disease, i.e. persons with one or more NCDs or above 55 years of age as a preventative or mildly symptomatic.

The science and statistics has stated for months the average fatality rate is approximately 0.5% overall with the at risk groups being the elderly and persons with NCDs. Children are more at risk of dying from the flu or a car accident than from COVID. Children hardly ever pass it on or even get symptoms because their immune system is so aggressive towards it unless they are seriously ill with an NCD or some other illness.

The science of early outpatient treatments is being totally ignored and not talked about by the medical experts while they wait for this vaccine that may or may not work against future strains. China went the total lockdown route, testing whole cities. California, Australia and others shutdown practically everything and it is still around.

Lockdowns do not work. They should only be used to slow things down to get your medical system ready and researching treatment options. Testing means nothing unless we have a cheap, effective treatment to give people when the testing identifies cases and isolation is not a treatment. Isolation is stopgap measure.

  16. Now watching the video.

Lt. Col Bostic and Mia need to keep their masks on or use a separate microphone.

Not only test, but ensure that the prison has a well defined covid policy. Correct any flaws in their policy/protocols.

  19. @Hal Austin December 31, 2020 5:21 PM “LOVE Island star Zara Holland…”

Hal I see that your British people are behaving as badly as expected.

Would you call this behavior bruta/? Would you call it savage? Would you call it the behavior of hungry dingoes?

How on earth do you manage to live among such people? Don’t you wish that you could escape from such brutishness?

  20. No one seems to understand that people emotions are also a big part in helping to control the virus
In the earlier months govt got a pass
One in which the number of visitors were less and control was much easier
Now the tide is moving a little faster as visitors increases
People nerves are tested and frustration sets in along with COVID fatigue
How does govt handle of such issues is now being put to the test

  21. To be expected, humans being what they are. These SAVAGES from the heavenly place did not care how many people they infected.

So…..did this situation get exposed through the grapevine or did she of the flailing arms hold a press conference and tell us herself?

I suggest that the “pup” we bought is now in the insufferable Hal Austin’s mouth.

  22. 6 months in jail and a fine of $50,000 should teach these scofflaws which God they should serve.

  23. This seems to be some sort of British Condition. So many civilized Brits breaking the protocols and not caring who they infect or possibly kill. Don’t care that their actions could be devastating to our country.

I am so happy that I was lucky enough to escape that place.

  24. According to Wikipedia

“Zara Holland, born Kingston Upon Hull, England and who attended Hull Collegiate School is best known for taking part in reality show Love Island on ITV2. Holland formerly held the title of Miss Great Britain. In June 2016 she took part in ITV2’s Love Island; while on the show she went on a date with contestant Alex Bowen, and had sex with him. She was subsequently stripped of her Miss Great Britain title 2015/2016.
In a statement issued, Miss Great Britain organisers said: “We feel we have no choice but to make this decision under the current circumstances. Although Miss Great Britain is the oldest pageant system in the UK, we pride ourselves on promoting the positivity of pageants in modern society and this includes the promotion of a strong, positive, female role model in our winners.”The stripping of her title led to some controversy among the public and feminist groups as to why she was punished for utilising her body in the way she desired. Presenter Caroline Flack took to Twitter to say that Zara is “a very sweet girl” and ask “What even is Miss GB? Are we still living in the dark ages?”.

    Our Hal’s neighbor

  25. @Donna December 31, 2020 8:04 PM “This seems to be some sort of British Condition.”

This British Condition, a toxic mix of arrogance, disrespect, entitlement, ignorance, recklessness and stupidity is exactly why the mortality rate in the United Kingdom is 1080 per million and rising.

I don’t know why instead of wasting time on this blog with us Hal did not spend his time giving his Boris proper advice.

I said months ago that the spread of this virus is being driven by stupidity

I have been posting the information and videos to this topic for months but here it is again for you read and consult with your doctor on what you can do to safeguard yourself.

Please provide specific information the cheap cocktail. I am off to the pharmacy to make the purchases.

    https://covid19criticalcare.com/
You really need to consult a doctor to help you determine levels of supplements your body is lacking but it is mostly vitamins and minerals you need to supplement to build your immune system. As an added benefits, some of those chronic ills you have might just disappear as well. The ivermectin is the only true medication on the list.

    Paragraph 2, I didn’t get the point.

The statistics told us who is most vulnerable to the bad COVID outcomes. We need to protect those vulnerable people and let the rest of people get on with their lives. Children should not be away from school and locked down. Much more children lives have been lost or severely affected through suicide, abuse, hunger, lack of schooling, etc. than had COVID.

Paragraph 3. Curious, should I listen to you over the medical experts.

The medical experts lie by omission and have been doing it forever and most of all via funding of medical studies rigged to reach a specific outcome to support a new revenue or protect an existing revenue stream.

Paragraph 4 doesn’t make sense to me. Should we stop testing? If positive, should we not isolate? Please share specific information on your cheap treatment.
Isn’t slowing things down the purpose of quarantining.

We have forgotten the reason for testing. We test to identify who needs attention. After we identify who needs attention, we have to treat them in the most effective way using as few resources and for the least amount of money possible. Isolation was required in the beginning when we had no idea how to treat. Now we know how to treat, we have to re-evaluate all those original measures because there might just be a better way.

COVID is not the only thing killing people nor is it in the top 3 (subject to correction Cancer, Hypertension, Diabetes, Heart Attacks are much higher). Is our laser focus on COVID killing other people that would otherwise be alive e.g. stress causing increased incidents of stroke or heart attacks. Is the current COVID Cure worse than the disease? That is why proper up-to-date statistics is extremely important?

That is where the home treatment protocol comes in. You don’t just say take this prescription to the pharmacy morning, noon and night and take their money to the bank. It requires doctors to actually earn their money by properly informing their patients the simple signs they can look for to determine if they are getting better or worse and actually following up to see how things are doing. About time the doctors do some real work apart from pushing prescriptions and saying next patient.

President of the Democratic Labour Party (DLP) Verla DePeiza

    DEPEIZA: HOLD GOV’T ACCOUNTABLE
    Fri, 01/01/2021 – 5:17am
The Barbados Labour Party has come under fire for its handling of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Did it have to come to this?” President of the Democratic Labour Party (DLP) Verla DePeiza queried after yesterday’s announcement that there is now transmission among the local population.

She said the Mia Mottley-led administration has been so consumed with its economic interests that it has continued to keep this island’s borders open to travel from high-risk jurisdictions.

“Every country within the Caribbean safe-guarded its citizens by temporarily banning tourists from high-risk countries. Their citizens came first. Our government refused to do the same,” she stressed.

DePeiza said that within the past two weeks citizens have consistently heard about protocols being broken by visitors; and day after day the country registers more and more positive Covid-19 cases.

“The situation was clearly spinning out of the government’s control.”

“Yet, there was no response to safeguard nationals and protect the health and well-being of those on the frontline who live among their families and friends. In fact, security guards working at a Government facility who were exposed through circumstances not of their making, were recently sent home to quarantine. The Government didn’t see it fit for them to be isolated in a hotel or any other facility at the state’s expense,” she revealed.

“This Government needs to be held accountable for any local transmission and community spread just as it took the kudos for the successes we registered as a country. They cannot hide and put the blame on the general public. The citizens of this country sacrificed much and did their part to ensure our country remained safe. It is the Government who let them down by continuing to allow high-risk persons in.”

The DLP President therefore wants to know if Government will now stop flights from high-risk territories from landing in Barbados; How is the government going to treat to policing of the quarantine centers going forward; and are further measures going to be enforced as persons conduct regular business after Tuesday’s bank holiday?

“Barbadians have done exceptionally well. They have exercised the discipline necessary to make us the desired safe destination of many this winter. It was the responsibility of the Government to ensure that its thirst for the tourist dollar was balanced with an uncompromising position regarding the safety and well-being of its citizens. Once again they have forgotten that Barbados is more than an economy; it’s a society.”

Given the seriousness of the situation, the DLP is imploring every single Barbadian to please stay at home, to minimize any socializing.

DePeiza further urged, “Do not depend on any Government for your care and well-being. Take your own safety and that of your families into your own hands and operate with wisdom.”

“We fervently pray that this local transmission does not evolve into community spread and subsequent illness and death to any more martyrs.”

  33. I submit that if these breaches continue and people are hauled before the court
Whilst telling their stories some which contain stories of breaches because of govt foul ups
Sooner or later these stories would reach international press and the black eyed which govt has been trying to avoid by their neatly pkg sanitized news would unraveled with negative fallout right before their eyes
The story given of language barrier and misinterpretations between guest and govt officials is just the tip of the iceberg
Even the Jamaican man story has incidence which shows a callous or indifference to the man not getting food or drink after asking which forced him to break quarantine
This govt might soon finds itself treading heavy buckets up hill

  34. If we have not yet received the message that we cannot continue to be totally dependent on tourism then we have some pretty hard heads.

But I see that Caribbean manufacturers have formed an association. Maybe now we will collaborate and co-ordinate more than compete.

Is this one of my dreams coming true?

    How about agriculture now?

  35. May I applaud the DLP leader comments on the outbreak of covid-19 in Barbados. Her speech is masterful and on-point.

“Do not depend on any Government for your care and well-being ” is both a poignant and a rallying cry to the masses.

Why would any government have such a low-level of self-esteem that it would allow entry to nomad workers hailing from two of the most delinquent covid-19 countries in the world: the UK and the USA?

Stop playing Russian roulette with the masses!

  36. Tlsn
Yet the herd followers of this govt leader says she is doing a great job
What they should ask a great job on whose behalf
Since most of the population is shut off from what benefits earned and those that a reaping are only the hoteliers
How amazing that a country that boast on higher education would simply lay back and allow govt to pur them in the bulls eye

  37. @TLSN

Better late than never. The problem DePeiza had was that if she had said anything earlier it would have been condemned as crying wolf.
But she is right. The president has always put livelihood before lives as far as the CoVid crisis is concerned. It was irresponsible and reckless and should have been condemned a long time ago.
Further, the claim that she has managed the crisis effectively is nonsense. We do not know how she is managing the transmissions so we cannot say she is doing a fine job. What we can say is that Barbados, so far, has been lucky.
She should tell us what the official epidemiological model is; the monthly mortality rate for 2019 and 2020 and the causes of death; our vaccines strategy, and not waffle about having a deal with PAHO and the WHO.
Most of all, the Barbadian people want honesty, not PR.

  38. @Hal Austin January 1, 2021 11:30 AM “What we can say is that Barbados, so far, has been lucky.”

Can you explain for the rest of us why Barbados, 24 deaths per million people has been lucky; and why such luck has not shined on the formerly Great Britain.1089 deaths per million people?

  39. Critical Analyzer Avatar

DePeiza and the rest of DLP yardfowls who were so silent all along should crawl back under the rocks they have been under all along. They only now choosing to comment because they see an opportunity to score some political points.

The lucky streak has finally come to an end. If what Caswell said is true, I willing to bet nuff people in the prison have it by now. Hopefully the prison is not air conditioned otherwise crapo dun smoke we pipe.

All those prison officers, symptomatic and at risk prisoners should already be on early prophylaxis treatment while all the testing is done to identify cases.

  40. CB maybe its because the demographics of Barbados has done a good job socially distancing lol

  41. Twelve new cases today
    The tide is tising

Confirmed cases have now risen to 395 – 208 females and 187 males.

Nine visitors – four males and five females – whose ages range from 17 to 59, are all asymptomatic. Five of them, who came into the island between December 21 and 29, 2020, on British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, American Airlines, and Jet Blue, tested positive on their second test. The other four came into contact with known cases.

Two other persons, Barbadian males, aged 35 and 62, who arrived in Barbados on December 29, 2020, on Jet Blue, tested positive on their second test. They are also asymptomatic. The final person, a 46-year-old male resident, who is symptomatic, came into contact with a known case.

No one left isolation today, so recoveries remain at 319, and those in isolation have increased to 69.

  42. @Donna

How many times have we exchanged the view here that if Covid does not serve to be the great disrupter nothing will.

  43. The stats are a matter of record, 7 deaths which occurred at the beginning of the pandemic. Therefore it is dishonest to suggest governments policy has resulted in deaths. So far the government tweaked the protocols as the situation warranted. The government was always prepared for the fact covid cases may occur. What we have is irresponsible behaviour by visitors and locals alike and enforcement must be a priority- time to get aggressive to send a message. Despite what all are saying by those who reside in covid infested UK and the USA, we are doing well to balance the economic with public health considerations.

  44. What is Verla’s alternative? Shut all hotels until the end of 2022 and pay severance and unemployment? Lives and livelihoods are the concern here. Wear your mask and follow other protocols. Simple.

  45. If she shuts down the country dem gon bawl about the loss of employment etc.
There will be no pleasing the DLP yardfowls. We have done well so far. It has NOT been luck. Some locals relaxed, some hoteliers were shortsighted and greedy, and surveillance was a liitle bit faulty.

The civilised British visitors are the beasts of this piece.

But I am still not afraid or anxious. Bajans will return to following the protocols knowing that the end is in sight. We will contain the outbreak and break some BU commenters’ hearts!

We must manage the damage and also get busy with diversifying the economy.

    Onward and upward!

  46. So why must bajans be punished because govt is using a one trick diseased pony called COVID to fill hotel rooms
What benefits are being derived for the many bajans who are asked to sacrifice
