However, there is the obligation by democratic societies to protect the right of citizens to practice freedom of speech. How societies evolve to be inclusive will have to be managed sensibly by today’s leaders. There is no room for the usual rhetoric.

Addressing hate speech does not mean limiting or prohibiting freedom of speech. It means keeping hate speech from escalating into something more dangerous, particularly incitement to discrimination, hostility and violence, which is prohibited under international law.

The news a man entered an entertainment establishment in the USA where members of the LGBTQ community hang out and shot up the place, reportedly killing 5 and injuring several others, must be condemned. The firing of a homosexual talk show recently from Voice of Barbados because management of the station prefers to operate right of centre should signal to wider society what is to come. It is an impractical position to take that Barbados will be able to avoid the call to integrate the rights of gay, trans community and non binary being stridently advocated into the legislative framework of Barbados. 

If there is doubt, check the call by some contributors to the Constitutional Reform Commission (CRC) to exclude sexual orientation matters from a new Constitution. Across the globe the matter of adopting an allyship approach to building inclusive societies has identified LGBTQ, transgender and non binary issues as contentious. As the USA is finding out with the shooting in Colorado, wedge issues create the opportunity to feed political rhetoric with the objective of winning votes and finding favour to satisfy narrow interest. It seems we have adopted a furtive approach to dealing with this issue. Barbados is proud to be the first to achieve many milestones, having gay prime minister is no big deal. Let us be honest with the people by shedding the hypocrisy.

Here is an issue we should not bury our heads because it will not go away.

    Hosted by the Constitutional Reform Commission, the discussion will focus on the Preamble to the Constitution, the appropriate place of the Charter of Barbados in the document, and how the spirit of Barbados
    and its people should be reflected in the Constitution.
    Members of the public are encouraged to attend the session and contribute to the shaping of the new Barbados Constitution.

    It would be wrong to point only at religious groups. We see hatred and opposition arising from sources that are not connected to religion.

    Bigotry often covers the religious and color spectrum. It is incomprehensible that two people just loving each other is a reason for a next person to kill them.

    Slavery is an international crime

    Using Slave Codes and Slave Laws from the 16-18th century generationally against Afrikans and their children in Barbados are all international crimes

    so, why are these international crimes being cherrypicked, is it because they are only being practiced against Afrikans in this region and hemisphere.

    since when is a white gay shooting more important under international law than the above.

    Which right of yours are LBGTQ people taking away from you just by being LBGTQ?

    I have some issues with transpeople trying denying their biological transformation is only partial but that is a peripheral issue.

Their private lives and lifestyles are their business, saw Qatar turn back their Gay Pride plane couple days ago, they could not land, had to go to another Arab country and change planes.

    Suicide is the final stage of several mental health conditions.
    Many in the LGBTQ—— community, suffer from a very young age. I was involved for many years with a youth mental health body, not in the clinical end, and the number of persons who reached out for help, were disproportionately members of the LGBTQ—— community.
    The many ways they are ostracized in society are too numerous to mention.
    I recall as a school boy, we knew who “they” were and labelled them with all types of distasteful names.
    Yet, Barbados elected an openly gay PM. 30-0? While I’m sure there was some “chatter” in the background, it never made it to the foreground. Is that because our laws treat male and female homosexuality differently?
    The vast majority leave Barbados. Especially if immediate family don’t approve. Life is much easier elsewhere.

    Openly gay you say? Not sure if openly is the correct description.

    We have had and have prominent individuals ‘suspected’ to be gay but Bajan correctness and reverence for the prominent dictated we sit on the fence if these persons remain closeted. In these cases it is business as usual. For those of us ordinary people it is more difficult proposition to avoid abuse.

    I say it again, what are these people to do if they were born that way????

    I am not going to defer to a book that cannot be proven. I am going to defer to what these people say about themselves. And I am going to defer to the evidence of my own eyes.

    A couple of years ago, a teenager killed himself right here in Barbados. My son was shocked because he knew him and had seen absolutely no signs of mental difficulties or depression.

    Then his best friend told my son that he was homosexual. My son hadn’t a clue. Poor young man probably couldn’t face living a lie anymore and couldn’t face the backlash from coming out.

    I have never caused one moment of distress for any homosexual. I will not be a factor in a suicide.

    These know-it-alls can continue to be de facto killers.

    We all know that for some people, “Sticks and stones may break [their] bones but words may [also] harm [them]. If your sense of self is extra fragile, that is all it takes.

    P.S. Elton John has lived his last couple of decades drug free and happy after a long struggle to accept himself.

    People should try putting the Bible aside for a moment and reading life stories. Maybe then they would learn how to be non-judgmental.

    Especially in matter that do not affect their lives in ANY way.

    It is misleading and inaccurate to state that the Prime Minister is “openly” gay. BTW, The term “ openly gay “ is considered to be offensive in the gay LBQT community.
    Furthermore, I don’t recall the Prime Minister ever publicly stating that she is gay.
    I think the PM once brought a libel case against a foreign journalist on this matter.And she was awarded damages.
    To date, the only Barbadian of prominence who has publicly said he is gay is Perter Wickham.

    NB. Please note that I am one hundred percent for gays having all the rights of our heterosexual community including the right to adopt children.

    I recall the family from my youth for several reasons … briefly I lived in proximity to them; several relatives/friends were at school with them; played some pickup cricket among them and friends etc.

    That’s a provocative statement what’s your definition of “openly gay”?

    Bajans for the most part have a laissez faire attitude to gay individuals a live and let live, true there has been name calling but that is in the minority or behind closed doors.

    BTW Barbados has a first, do you know that approx. 50 years ago there was a local event called “Queen of the B’s”? A forerunner to such shows e.g., Rupaul’s Drag race etc.

    That shows the degree of comfort that individuals had in staging a public show with obvious gay persons. How come someone felt comfortable staging a show with gay persons in conservative Barbados in the 1970’s?.

    Good morning
    Just warming up, so a few random thoughts to get going.

    1) Setting up strawmen and knocking them over is one of the favorite pastimes of the BU crowd. You can make a sensible statement of how we should threat our LBTQ+ brothers and sister and someone will stretch that statement to cover areas where it was not meant

    2) It seems as if LBTQ+ folks are asking BU regulars to have sex with them. This is the only explanation I can think of to explain why the BU folks have so much passion about the LBTQ+ folks. I ruled out the possibility that the BU folks are closeted and bigoted.

    3) Thank God none of the LBTQ+ folks are of African origin. Wondering if any were, if this would change AOP stance.

    It is amusing how a group which is often at the receiving end of racist and bigoted actions would act in the same bigoted manner towards others. In the ugly future that is ahead of us, it is better that we now begin to collect/create allies instead of supporting division. Let us make the tent more inclusive.

    Advances in civil rights came because of the courage of Black Americans and the millions of whites who supported the effort.

    Peter Wickham was a terrible moderator. Antagonistic, passive aggressive, terribly biased and pettier than a cat. These are not the qualities of a good moderator or anyone worth having a civil discussion with. He should have been fired long time ago
