For the purpose of the blog, interested persons should pay particular attention to slides 59, 63-67, 70-73 & 75, as these slides note some of the main culprits in most food poisoning seen in the GIT.

After the incubation period and the generation time, the major Patho-physiology that cause the symptoms of pain, vomiting diarrhea involves the impaired function of the Na+K+ATP dependent pump in the walls of the GI TRACT.

There is thus a tendency to dehydration, which can be kept at bay in mild cases by increasing one’s fluid intake, until the function of the Na+K+ATP dependent pump in the walls of the GI TRACT is restored.

Dehydration is dangerous, because all chemical reactions in the body take place in aqueous medium.

In mild cases, and while waiting for care in severe casses one can try to replace the Na+ by putting some pot salt in your lemonade. K+ may easily be obtained from bananas and citrous fruit. Use very little sugar in your rehydration fluid, as the sugar will attract water to the gut, and defeat the purpose that you are trying to achieve.

  1. A relative had lunch a few days ago at a restaurant and by night had to be put on a drip because of uncontrolled vomiting.

    Six hours or so.

Fine the next day after treatment.

  2. What is the name of the restaurant John? In the public’s interest of course.

Your relative was put on a drip to achieve hydration, because his condition may have been quite serious,
Hydration is the major part of the therapy, as one waits for the GITract walls to be repaired to allow recovered function of its Na+K+ATP dependent pump

If you feel weak during strenuous work in the back yard you may aid recovery by putting some salt in your lemonade (sweet in this case or use rehydration salts that are sold to rehydrate babies with vomiting and diarrhoea. I would use REHYDRAT when I had a royal rumble stirring concrete by hand.

  4. Rather not give the name as he has eaten there for years and not had a problem.

  5. Purpose was to show how easy it is to get food poisoning.

Years ago, I developed severe vomiting and diarrhea hours after eating dinner at home one Thursday night.

I don’t think it was home food but rather some type of bug that was circulating.

All other members of the household developed the same symptoms but not the same time.

    Two came down on Saturday

One came down with the symptoms 3 days later on Sunday and the fourth finally exhibited the symptoms on Monday.

I figured I brought the bug into the household, then it spread to the various members.

My research on Cholera deaths in the 1854 epidemic showed me that entire families died.

I reckon one came down with it, then another who cared for the first sick member and so it spread through close contact until all in the household were dead.

In the case of my relative, only one member of the household was affected, the other who ate at the same restaurant was not affected.

i WOULD NEED TO DIG INTO THE EXTERNAL HARDRIVE WITH MY MICROB PPTS TO BE COMPLETLY ACCURATE HERE,

BUT GENERALLY GI TRACT INFECTIONS MAY BE
    WATER BOURNE
    FOOD BOURNE……..or
    VIRAL in origin

I tried to find the study and report of the very interesting episode in Buff Bay Jamaica in 19 77 involving the contamination of a number of bags of “”counter flour”” with a chemical that got onto some of the bags which were part of a shipment to the island.

Aparrently the bags with the contaminant were all delivered only to the village shops in Buff Bay. Perhaps, that wont happen here in these days, as we no longer have the small shops selling flour etc as was the case 60-70 years ago.

In the blog, of which this is an offshoot, the greater concern for us is the multiplicity of both food products and other items for personal care and for other house hold uses that are contributing to poor health……………over time.

This is of great interest, because of the number of young folk who are passing and not by accidents.

Our elderly folk seem not to have had inco-operated into their bodies certain chemicals that are prevalently used to day, which I believe are apparently causing havoc in Bim, as they do elsewhere in the so called developing countries . Since many of our elderly tend to VERY SENSIBLY maintain the lifestyles of their youth they seem not to be susceptible.

Simple Simon seems to be a good exmple of some one who seems to practice the “old”” ways with great sucess. We should ask her to tell us what she avoids purchasing and using in her home.

  7. INCORPORATED NOT inco-operated

  8. My old cane cutter friend in his 70’s told me he noticed that all the people who lived in his area and were in their nineties had small plots of ground provisions.

He reckoned that was the major difference he saw between the very old people and the younger lot.

He would often point out houses where younger people had died of cancer.

I remember one really nice house he showed me that was built by a returning national from the UK.

Shortly after its construction the owner died of cancer.

AS YOU KNOW, THE SKIN IS THE LARGEST ORGAN OF THE BODY
YOU KNOW ALSO THAT HAIR IS AN INTEGRAL PART OF THE SKIN
THE MAJOR ROLE OF THE SKIN IS AS A PROTECTIVE BARRIER TO PREVENT ANY AND ALL ADVERSE THING FROM ENTERING THE BODY

BECAUSE OF THE FAT IN THE SKIN IT MAY MAY BE USED POSITIVELY FOR THE ABSORPTION OF NUMBER OF MEDICATIONS

    BUT
MORE OFTEN NEGATIVELY, THE SKIN IS A VERY GOOD ROUTE FOR ABSORPTION OF INJURIOUS COSMETICS AND THINGS THAT WE ARE SPRAYING ABOUT OUR HOMES, IN OUR GARDENS AND IN OUR FIELDS

COCONUT OIL WHICH IS THOUGHT TO BE A VERY USEFUL AND HEALTHY FAT FOR USE IN COOKING, IS EASILY ABSORBED BY THE SKIN ALSO.

ONE REMEMBERS WHEN THE GIRLS PUT IT ON THEIR HAIR, AND IT WAS APPLIED TO THE SKIN JUDICIOUSLY, AND ALWAYS HARMLESSLY

THOSE POOR “”STUPID”” OLD FOLK WERE ACTUALLY ABSOLUTELY 100% CORRECT ABOUT THESE USES OF COCONUT OIL

THEY WERE ALSO CORRECT IN THE USE OF COD LIVER OIL AND SHARK OIL……LONG LONG BEFORE CONTEMPORARY SCIENTISTS ASCERTAINED THAT OIL OBTAINED FROM DEEP SEA FISH CONTAINED OMEGA 3 FATTY ACIDS WHICH ARE ESSENTIAL NUTRIENTS.

THOSE POOR “”STUPID”” OLD FOLK WERE ACTUALLY ABSOLUTELY MORE SENSIBLE THAN THE YOUTH MAY THINK.

  10. We used to sell shark oil for .75 cents for a three gill bottle and now you can hardly find it on the island. Sea moss was sold at .50 cents a pound and now there is none along the coast. My aunt say moss is now more than $15 if you can find it. I have a good two pounds in my basement from many years ago. I use it sparingly.

  11. @GP “Simple Simon seems to be a good exmple of some one who seems to practice the “old”” ways with great sucess. We should ask her to tell us what she avoids purchasing and using in her home.”

i grow and eat ground provisions, yam, sweet potato, cassava, breadfruit, Those are my principal starches. I eat rice or pasta only if the traditional ground provisions are not available. I grow and eat okra, pumpkin, spinach, sometimes cucumbers and carrots [the carrots did not do well this year] but I have a good number of pumpkins so it does not matter so much I grow much of my and my own herbs. I eat the traditional “wild” fruit. There are lots of “wild” fruit trees in my natal village, so I eat according to season akees, dunks, guavas, mangoes, jamoon. I own a mango tree, an avocado, a good number of banana trees and a soursop so I eat those. I eat golden apples, and avocados. If I go into town I will buy local fruit from the Rastafarian vendor at the bottom of Swan Street. I will buy a few dollars of whatever he has that day, tamarinds, gooseberries, cashews, fat porks. A sibling has a coconut tree so I drink coconut water and use dried coconut in the occasional coconut bread. I buy black belly lamb and pork from a man in my village, Sometimes a yard fowl lays eggs in my field, so I eat those too, in cake I must admit.

I am not much into makeup. I last wore makeup when I attended a wedding more than 10 years ago. I haven’t owned any makeup since then, no lipstick either.

I must admit that sometimes for my hair I use some fancy branded products with an ingredient list with as many words as the Bible. But sometimes I mix up coconut oil, olive oil and petroleum jelly. Keep it in the fridge and use a tiny bit after every hair wash.

My mother never used fancy branded products on her babies. After the bath the baby got rubbed down with a little olive oil. So far all of the babies have lived past 63 and a few past 80. 8 of the 9 have lived past 65. Some of this might just be good genes though. Both parents lived past 85.

I try to keep my house cleaning simple. I don’t believe in buying a dozen different “cleaning products”. I believe that sometimes the advertisers are trying to fool us that neither we or our surroundings are really clean unless we buy a dozen different things from said advertisers. Vinegar and water is fine for mopping tiled floor. I live in the tropics where it is warm all the time,so I own no carpets, I use simple washable cotton mats in front of each bed, the sinks, shower and toilet bowl, Dish liquid or other detergent and water cleans most things. For the toilet bowl add a little bleach.

  12. And people complain that “people nowadays are selfish” That is not my experience. People give me produce for free or a reduced price and following my parents example I give away some of what I grow,
