The ongoing pandemic has given impetus finally to governments in the region assigning additional resources to improving food security. Barbados in the period has been developing a closer relationship with Guyana and we have seen cooperation to increase black belly sheep production to satisfy local and some regional demand for lamb. There are additional initiatives we hope to see bear fruit in the coming weeks and months mentioned in a previous blog – Government Initiatives to Address Food Supply – The St. Barnabas Accord. Last week Minister of Agriculture reported there is a plan to slash food import bill by 20% when a food terminal is established in Barbados with the help of Guyana. It is a reminder the founders of CARIFTA envisioned Guyana to be the bread basket of the Caribbean almost 50 years ago.

Yesterday a direct flight – a first from Nigeria – to bring delegates to attend a 3-day investment forum one may argue is the result of the effort of the government to forge close ties with some African countries to create business of opportunities. The AfriCaribbean Trade and Investment Forum will take place in Barbados from September 1-3.  The forum represents an opportunity for the Caribbean and African private sectors  to explore opportunities for trade and address challenges that have historically prevented deeper collaboration.  The forum is being hosted by the African Export-Import Bank. The blogmaster is hopeful there is meaningful collaboration coming out of the engagement.

In a previous BU blog – Barbados based Fintechs on the MOVE the entry of Barbadian Fintech companies was highlighted and from reports have been reaping success on the African continent. It bears no reminder that 95 percent of Barbadian are of African descent, we therefore share a historical bond.

    What trade?

    What investment?

    Under which rules of law?

Have you not noticed that your friends in the West are changing all the established and foundational trade and investment norms which capitalism purported were indispensable]?

    We have many examples.

Today they are making the “rules-based system” to say that market forces should no longer discover price but that which is paid for Russian oil and gas should be controlled by an arbitrary limit set by your Western White people. Fascists in Western capitals.

We’ve seen this type of instrumentalized capitalism deployed for centuries. The normalcy of stealing the sovereign wealth of countries held in Western banks is old hat but an oft used weapon of war.

A warfarism for its own sake. Indeed, your Western imperial powers are more precisely described as based on war as opposed fiat finance.

However, when your much favoured White criminals continue to betray every fundamental precept on which their wicked system is anchored should alert Mottley and the rest that it’s time to seek the protection of a life boat.

Of course, this too will fail as Putin has today curtailed any and all supplies still directly heading their way. And as the presstitutes in the West locate this war on the back burner the gravamen of these circumstances continues at pace.

We should now expect supply pushed inflation to be at least 20 percent, before this reckless, misconceived action, to now be 30 percent or more in your Western world as winter comes.

Underlying all of this is this racist, capitalist, system which you support wholeheartedly and its inability to meet its day of reckoning, even as most of us remain in that trade and investment Wonderland of Alice.

  2. Gaddafi called for integration of a United States of Africa
“a single African military force, a single currency and a single passport for Africans to move freely around the continent”.
Gaddafi had also indicated that the proposed federation may extend as far west as the Caribbean: Haiti, Jamaica, the Dominican Republic, the Bahamas and other islands featuring a large African diaspora, may be invited to join.

  11. @David, I am very positive and would say we must guard against the former colonizers sabotaging this effort.

Far too many fools have bought into the idea of the mentally enslaved that direct flights between the Caribbean and Africa will lack capacity.

I think every Bajan should be be afforded the opportunity to spend 3 months outside of Barbados every 5 years as part of some National Re-education andI Indoctrination Policy.

Too much mendicancy and lazy thinkers in Barbados who seem prepared to constantly be bathed in mediocrity while finding comfort with the poor black man syndrome. Bring a Haitian or a poor African who has unreliable electricity, no computer, eats macaroni for breakfast, lunch and dinner to Barbados, take the same amount of Bajans to Haiti or Africa. The Haitian and Africans would be creative while utilizing every opportunity while the Bajans would just grumble.

A pig does not complain it does not have hands to eat.

BAJANS ARE SPOILT ROTTEN BY GOVERNMENT AND POLITICIANS.

that’s the spirit….do your OWN RESEARCH into the continent, create your OWN CONTACTS list and NETWORK orgs, individually, do not take what politicians say as gospel and depend on their usual go nowhere rhetoric…..THE REALITY on the ground is completely DIFFERENT……what you have on OTHERS who go to Afrika DAILY BY THE PLANELOADS where you see NO AFRIKANS FROM THE DIASPORA, particularly from the Caribbean………you are AFRIKAN by DESCENT they are merely exploiters seeking a way in to TIEF…..

..don’t know how they could screw that up…..but we shall see….

  18. David,

I’ve been listening to some of the talk shopping (although, I missed the presentation from a friend of mine on food security) and I can sense the excitement that Kammie mentioned.

I am afraid to get too excited. I don’t think I could stand the disappointment of another false start.

Though the words were encouraging and there seems to be intent, I am only cautiously optimistic.

I do hope that we HAVE grasped the fact that this has to be more than a business arrangement. There must indeed be a deep reckoning with the barriers, both external and internal that have kept us apart. And then there must be a reconnecting on a level that runs deeper than business relationships.

How could we have been so blind to each other for all this time?

It is not the same politicians as before. As politicians are part of the community, they reflect it’s views, As public consensus is now shifting towards links with Africa, this will start being reflected in Government and other parties policies too. You shouldn’t criticise what you want and mistrust political will and intent when it is in line with your beliefs. Alternatively people can become involved in Afrocentric politics themselves.

  22. An example of forces against African Unity is when Gaddafi was head of African Union and called for a United States of Africa.

“UK Tells Africans to Eat Insects for the Environment

Starvation-threatened Africans are being encouraged to eat insects by a UK aid initiative.

African caterpillars, migratory locusts and black soldier flies are on the menu under the initiative taking place in Zimbabwe and the Democratic Republic of Congo – but locals are rejecting the offer due to the taste and cultural norms.

Dr Alberto Fiore, the project lead who has whipped up a dish of locally farmed mopane worms, cereals, and fruits, has also created a insect-based porridge containing grains including sorghum and millets, which he reassured the Guardian is palatable.”

  26. Interesting idea Kammie….

I very much like the idea of a program that would allow for the possibility 1 school year to be spent in Africa with African students spending 1 year here. An exchange program. The cross fertilization, appreciation of who we all are and linkage building would be TREMENDOUS.

As I recall my own development, in and outside of Barbados. My confidence as a global citizen and global business man grew considerably due to my experiences living in other Caribbean islands as well as regularly working with my African brothers and sisters internationally. This experience would be priceless and early enough in our kids development to carry on in an influential and beneficial way for the rest of their lives.

It goes well beyond the narrow view of just trying to fill a hotel room. This is about linking who we are to who we really were as a people. Not what the HIStory books tell us. Again, the confidence from this reckoning is priceless…..So you know it will be challenged BTW

  27. @ WARU
As I read these positive postings on Africa, I reflect on your gallant efforts to push our African heritage and oneness.
In many ways I remember the efforts of Brothers and Sisters in Bim, who tried their utmost to impress upon the powers that be, over fifty years ago, that Africa was where we could find great cultural, economic and other links, that are really the genuine missing parts of who we are.
Education like a plant , has to be cultivated and it takes roots. The better we protect the roots , the stronger the plant. Like great trees, the roots spread and when we try to dig up that tree , the resistance of the roots , often surprise the most advanced tree moving equipment.

@David, are we really that further along than the past? Are the practical hurdles which posed problems no longer existent? The enthusiasm is excellent and maybe I am too cynical to believe that many appear to see these ventures with more sentiment than sensibility!

    The conference speaks of :

    Promoting inter-bank relationships including fostering payment and financial flow;
    developing creative and cultural engagements that can be commercially viable;
    creating a business case for a potential AfriCaribbean Free Trade Area;
promoting trade and investment between Africa and the Caribbean by serving as a platform for market identification, building business partnerships, exchange of trade and market information, co-investments, etc..

All laudable and perfectly legitimate but since when do we need to bend over backwards to guide smart entrepreneurial folks to “create a business case” for investment opportunities or indeed cultural engagements!

This should have been a NATURAL progression over these many years and the fact that it’s taken root only in starts and stops is for many reasons (like @Holdeers point: “former colonizers sabotaging this effort”) but for all practical purposes it goes well beyond that.

We KNOW that Bob Marley played in concert to large crowds in Africa way back in the 80s (Zimbabwe, I believe and Ethiopia) and was exceedingly popular all over the continent along with other Caribbean artistes; similarly we in turn listened to the acapella group ‘LadySmith Black Mambazo’, Hugh Masekela and many others. So in 2022 we need a government forum to speak to ‘cultural engagement’ … fah trute!

Why has there been no ability to complete flights from there to the region with commercially viable projects (they were started or strongly mooted some years ago, not so) ? Where will those flights be coming from … Accra or Cape Town or where; and will there be more tourists than traded products or vice-versa. What’s on the return legs??

These are multi-stop long haul events currently and the viability of regularly scheduled direct flights seem quite remote as a commercial profit maker. … But periodic charters could work!

If there are organic opportunities to continue to expand the outreach between our nations surely they will be executed so I too wish the entrepreneurs well!

Thus one hopes the conference talk shop revved up more than enthusiasm.

  32. @Dee Word

As shared with Donna earlier, time will tell. Growing these non traditional links is a hard nut to crack.

  33. Life through the eyes of the quintessential Bajan.

As long established abnormal ways of degenerative thinking never fail to reassert themselves even when facing the existential.

As a mindless hopefulness crowds out critical thought.

Not even within the dominant thinking of Bajans is there the uniqueness of letting other poor people or others generally come to Barbados and see opportunities which locals will never see or grasp, is a unique cultural norm. This happens everywhere!

This thinking comes from the same people who have propelled the East Indian take over of nearly all of Swan Street and Broad Street.

Bajans talk pretty but when it comes to foreigners they are ruthless in support. Bajans use as social currency interactions with the foreigners they like and are quick to testify that there is some universality of mankind. That all White people ain’t racist. That Indians are their friends. As if its our job to assess each one, ignoring the general tendencies, history, reciprocity, intentions not in the general interest of the people etc

We are yet to see any Bajan communities, anywhere in the world, which dominates the business landscape. Indeed, community is impossible unless we first own and control an economy. We don’t mean a the national economy. For we neither own nor control that.

This self flagellation is well established to maintain a national narrow-mindedness, broadly accepted. As if a Bajan branch of philosophy cum religion. Permit this writer to demure.

@William, I really don’t intend to get drawn to deeply into this overwrought hyperventilating type subject but I want to briefly touch on your remark that:

“In many ways I remember the efforts of Brothers and Sisters in Bim, who tried their utmost to impress upon the powers that be, over fifty years ago, that Africa was where we could find great cultural, economic and other links, that are really the genuine missing parts of who we are.
Education like a plant , has to be cultivated and it takes roots. The better we protect the roots , the stronger the plant. Like great trees, the roots spread and when we try to dig up that tree , the resistance of the roots , often surprise the most advanced tree moving equipment.”

Would you not say also that there was significant cross-interface back then at the political level (at least). I certainly recall visits to the region by African presidents/chieftains most often to Jamaica.

Beyond that, however, with the greater exposure of West Indians to colleges in US and UK they become more directly exposed to brethren from Africa and those close bounds grew into powerful liaisons after homeward returns which in turn led to those young professionals forging more interface.

Of course though to your point (as I interpret it) all was limited within the lil-England mentality and too the simple economic dog-eat-dog struggle of mirrored developing economies being man-handled by the developed world.

We are in a vastly different space now and interfaces will hopefully grow more significantly but I am simply saying: seize and settle to others – and suggest your point about making an “impression” can be affirmed to the point that: what our brethren of that day did to forge links with our continental ancestors should not be see as any less than TRAILBLAZING as roots of our education and more in context of the tremendous pressures they faced NOT to link-up !

    I dun wid this.

I defer away from @ Pacha’s and @WARU and all others who treat disagreement as a blood sport which requires vigorously nasty retorts … their opinions like many of ours are sometimes excellent and sometimes absurd and if they perceive that no one can tell them when they are being absurd without their nasty wit and venom being shown then more power to them.

  43. There is more involved than just going back to Africa, and it has to be a successful move.
People will need income, money to buy a place, pay bills, buy a car and buy food to live etc.
It is easier for Celebrities or Americans to sell up and up and move or live and travel between 2 continents but more difficult for others from poorer nations.
There are a number of tales and news reports of musicians, rastas and others who made the move but came back or were stranded, or bought land and property which was not used.
There are even stories of people being robbed and attacked by locals. Government Agencies can help the transition. Adults and Youths can go out on work contracts or summer camps etc.
