The dent to reputation suffered suffered by Barbados when former Minister Donville Inniss was jailed in the USA for money laundering should make for interesting commentary. To be expected a gullible population continues to focus on the obvious. Why was a former minister charged over a measly USD36,000.00?

What Barbadians should be more concerned about is the incarceration of Inniss should bring into focus how business gets done in Barbados. We have so many examples whether Cahill under the former administration or the Radical vaccine scam under the current administration to finger only two.

White collar corruption and malfeasance is always hard to ringfence in any country because the gatekeepers of justice are the powerful in society. Unfortunately in island states like Barbados, it becomes more difficult because of the incestuous nature of the beast resulting in incompetent watchdog agencies as a result of nepotism.

The following insightful comment was posted by Northern Observer. We need to lift our game as citizens in a democracy showing fissures.

@David I cannot comment on AT (Alex Tasker), I don’t know the person. What can be observed is the senior management at ICBL did not appreciate the finer points of what they were doing. What none of know is the inner workings.

Did BF&M have other issues with IRS/DOJ?

What was the relationship between the CEO-CFO at BF&M, and that CFO/others and ICBL personnel.

I mean, even after discovery, it did not have to be disclosed. Who actually found it? It was two relatively small amounts…somebody could have created paperwork after the fact. Yet, somebody also decided that wasn’t going to happen.

Imagine somebody at BF&M was upset they didn’t get the ICBL CEO job. Let’s face it, II (Ingrid Innes) wasn’t particularly well qualified, and an outsider at BF&M. The decision to disclose may have been to sink her. In the myopic Bajan view it was to get DI (Donville Inniss). But the intent may have been to get II fired, and it ends there. Maybe they were after AT. Sometimes when you don’t appreciate the ‘big picture’ a decision is made, which has ramifications one didn’t foresee.

    Barbados and the 15 per cent global tax
    By Donville Inniss

    Since the passage of the 1965 International Business Companies Act (IBC), Barbados has truly punched above its weight on global business and tax matters resulting in numerous tax treaties with sovereign states We became home to thousands of international business structures and above all created a sustainable cadre of professionals whilst generating, in 2017, up to 64 per cent of Corporate Tax revenue plus many other economic benefits to the island.
    Of course we have also been black-listed, grey listed, white-listed, downgraded and degraded by others who sought to strengthen their weak domestic tax arrangements by condemning others. But Barbados stood steadfast and ensured that it became an active voice in international fora where relevant issues were debated.
    In 2018, whether in an attempt to appease local businesses, bow to international pressure or just sheer lack of public finance ingenuity, Barbados sought to converge its tax rates and settled on a 5 per cent rate, down from a high of 25 per cent and up from a low of about 1 per cent.
    Shortly thereafter all hell broke loose as the OECD, buoyed by some strong anti-big business political ideology creeping through the corridors of the EU and USA, re-energised a call for a 15 per cent minimum global tax.
    After much attempts at bravado, Barbados capitulated and joined some 139 other countries in signing onto to this agreement.
    Pillar One of this agreement sought to create rules to govern taxation of profits made by companies that operate in more than one country. With the advent of technology and tech-companies, some developed states felt that they were losing out on tax revenue to lesser states.
    The focus in this pillar seems to be based on taxing businesses where their customers are located rather than where they have a physical presence or where their intellectual property is located. Pillar Two specifically addresses the issue of the 15 per cent minimum global tax.
    One needs to reflect on how the EU had introduced digital-services taxes which targeted primarily major US firms that did business in the EU but booked their profits elsewhere. The pro-business President Donald Trump threatened to retaliate by imposing tariffs on EU goods entering the USA.
    After shouting across the oceans, the powers that be agreed to forge ahead with the new 15 per cent minimum tax.
    The biggest cheer leader in this battle has been Janet Yellin who now serves as President Biden’s Treasury Secretary.
    Her arguments in favour of this measure has been loud and consistent in and out of the White House over the years. I suspect that Trump had a way of filtering out the noise for a few years.
    Even though there has been much delay in implementing these new measures, shifting from a June 2022 deadline to 2024, this issue must continue to resonate with Barbados as its implementation can have severe adverse consequences for our island nation. Consider what is unravelling in the EU on this matter. In order to implement this new tax policy, the EU must garner support and approval from all 27 member states.
    However, Hungary has stood up in objection to it as they see such a tax measure as having a profound negative impact upon their economy and society.
    Having previously lowered its Corporation tax from 50 per cent to 9 per cent in order to atrract businesses, Hungary would now have to increase its tax rate whereas most other EU countires already are much higher tax jurisdictions and hence stood only to gain from the measure. Even Ireland at 12.5 per cent tax had been a tax outcast for many years but enjoyed tremendous social and economic growth over the years.
    Not surprisingly, Hungary had to be penalized for blocking the EU’s effort. But alas, not by the EU, but by the USA who on Friday, July 8, 2022, announced that it was withdrawing from the 1979 bilateral treaty, Hungary/USA, citing that the benefits “were no longer reciprocal.” So whilst Hungary and the EU were still talking the US was taking action against Hungary.
    What is perhaps most instructive is that in order for the US to implement this tax policy, the approval of Congress is needed and with all likelihood that Congress will, come November, shift determinedly back to the Republican Party who are vehemently opposed to this policy. The US may very well not be able to legislatively achieve what it is demanding of weaker sovereign states.
    So it may be a case of do as I say and not as I do.
    Republicans dislike any foreign nation having control over its tax policies.
    With most countries facing galloping inflation, a lurking recession, higher food prices due to the Russia/Ukraine war, oil prices and growing political unrest, Barbados is justifiably facing an uncertain future which can only be made worse if issues such a the minimum global tax rate and its attendant implementation strategies are not carefully weighed in its future and its favour.
    Over the years we have benefited greatly from the IBFS sector and hence we are duly bound to fight to keep it going even if in a different shape.
    This sector and these issues may not be of interest as guns, violence, the cost of living and other social and political ills, but it poses a serious threat to Barbados’ ability to continue to build a strong, resilient and diversified economy and a safer society.
    Barbados must continue to be actively present in all relevant fora where these issues are being addressed, it must forge alliances with like-minded states and seek to demand preferential treatment wherever possible and applicable.
    I look forward to the current administration proving to Barbados that it deserves the faith the electorate has placed in it by going beyond soundbites and grand pronouncements in the international area, and come up with a sound economic strategy able to guide our great country forward. I don’t want to wait in vain.

    Let’s wait to see how this play outs. Enuff does not seem concerned; however we know that the ingredients of this protest are present in every single Caribbean island – from Barbados to Trinidad.

    “According to the Suriname Herald as well there is dissatisfaction with the appointment policy whereby friends and family are being hired and the protestors said they are also tired of broken promises and the ever rising prices of products, utilities and house rent.” Such a quote could be applied to Barbados.

Generally, have zero confidence in their rehab systems now consider jail conditions and the treatment of children as key barromters for the state of a country.

    Sojourner Truth is worthy of a place of sainthood alongside of Joan of Arc. Crispus Attucks and George William Gordon are entitled to the halo of martyrdom with no less glory than the Martyrs of any other race. Toussaint L’Ouverture’s brilliancy as a soldier or a statesman outshine that of any other people, hence, he’s entitled to the highest place as a hero among men.

    Because Africa’s created millions and countless millions of Black men and women, in war and peace, whose luster and bravery outshine that of any other people. So why not see good and perfection in ourselves?

    We must inspire a literature and promulgate a doctrine of our own without ANY APOLOGIES to the powers that be. That right is ours from God. Let sentiments and cross opinions go to the winds. We are entitled to our own opinion, and are not obligated to or bound by the opinions of others.

    If others laugh at you, return the laughter to them. If they mimic you, return the compliment with equal force. Because they have no more right to dishonor, discredit you in manhood than you have in dealing with them. Honor them when they honor you. Disrespect and disregard them when they vilely treat you.

    Their arrogance is but skin deep… an assumption that has no foundation in morals or in law.

    They have sprung from the same family tree of obscurity as we have.
    Their history is as rude in its primitiveness as ours.
    Their ancestors were running wild and living in trees of branches like monkeys, as ours.
    They made human sacrifices, ate the flesh of their own dead and wild meat from beasts for centuries, even as they have accused us of doing.
    Their cannibalism is more prolonged than ours.

    When we were embracing the banks of the Nile, they were still drinking blood out of the skulls of their conquered dead.
    After our civilization had reached a new day of progress, they were still living in holes with bats, rats and other insects and animals.
    After we had already unfathomed the mystery of the stars and reduced the heavenly constellations to minute and regular calculus, they were still backwoodsmen, living in ignorance and in blatant darkness.

    The world is indebted to us for the benefits of civilization. They stole our arts and sciences from Africa. Then why should we be ashamed of ourselves?

    Their modern improvements (are but duplicates of a grander civilization that we reflected thousands of years ago, without the advantage of what is buried and still hidden), to be reflected and resurrected by our generation and our posterity.

    Why should we be discouraged if somebody laughs at us today? Who is to tell what tomorrow will bring forth? Did they not laugh at Christ, Moses, Muhammad? Was there not a Carthage, Greece and Rome? So we see and have changes every day, so pray, work, be steadfast and be not dismayed.

    Because as the Jew is held together by his religion, the white race is, by the assumption and the unwritten law of superiority, the Mongolian by the precious tie of blood, likewise the Black man must unite in one grand racial hierarchy. Our union must know no clime, no nationality. But let us all hold together in every country, in every clime, making a racial empire upon which the sun shall never set.

    Let no voice but your own speak to you from the depths. Let no influence but your own rouse you in time of peace and time of war. Hear all, but attend only to that which concerns you. Your allegiance shall be to your God, your race, your country.

    Remember that the Jew in his political and economic urge is always first a Jew. The white man is first a white man under ALL CIRCUMSTANCES. So you can do no less, BE BLACK, BUY BLACK, THINK BLACK, AND ALL ELSE WILL TAKE CARE OF ITSELF!

    Let no one inoculate you with evil doctrines to suit his own conveniences. Charity begins at home. So first to thyself be true, and thou canst not then be false to no man.

    Because God and Nature first made us what we are, and out of our own creative genius, we make ourselves what we want to be. Follow always that great law. Let God and the sky be our limit, and eternity our measurement.

    There is no height to which you cannot climb without the active intelligence of your own mind. Mind creates, and as much as we desire in nature, we can have through the creation of our own minds. And today being scientifically the weaker race, you shall treat others only as they treat you.

    But in your homes and everywhere possible you must teach the higher development of science to your children, and make sure… and make sure that we have a race of scientists par excellence. For in religion and science lies our only hope to withstand the evil designs of modern materialism.

    Never forget your God. Remember that we live, work, and pray for a binding racial hierarchy, whose only natural, spiritual and political limits shall be God and Africa, at home and abroad.
