I am calling on all Vincentians at home and abroad to strongly object to the vitriolic attacks that Ralph Gonsalves, Prime Minister of St. Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) is constantly unleashing on the US administration and in particular President Biden in favour of his rogue states and associates, Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua. His constant attack on the US is of no benefit to us, we can only suffer for it.

The sooner we realize this, the better. SVG. is not a friend of the US, it is not an enemy of the US, it is not an associate of the US, it is not an ally of the US, it is part of the US. It may be argued that the greater part of the Vincentian population lives in the US. Vincentians of all walks of life, like all other CARICOM nationals are engaged in a very meaningful way in every facet of American life, administrative and otherwise. For example, (1) Betty Boyea King of Byrea (first cousin to PM Gonsalves), was appointed US Ambassador to the UN under connective US Administrations, led by George Bush Jr. and Bill Clinton, (2) Roy Austin of Rose Place (Bottom Town), Kingstown was appointed US Ambassador to Trinidad and Tobago during the 8 year reign of George Bush Jr.

    US officials meet with Caricom Heads
    President of the United States of America, Joe Biden, and Vice President Kamala Harris met with CARICOM Heads late Friday, as the ninth Summit of the Americas concluded in Los Angeles, California with new commitments to climate adaptation, clean energy, and food security.
    The Summit focused on Building A Sustainable, Resilient, And Equitable Future and included the participation of leaders from across the Caribbean. Both President Biden and Vice President Harris met with CARICOM members on Thursday and Secretary of State Antony Blinken hosted multiple Caribbean Heads of Government during meetings on Friday.
    As President Biden explained, “There’s a lot that I think we can and should do. This is a partnership.
    My intention is to intensify the relationship with the Caribbean. And I mean that sincerely. You’re critically important to us in every way, and I hope we’re important to you.”
    US and CARICOM leaders discussed Vice President Harris’ announcement of the US-Caribbean Partnership to Address the Climate Crisis, or PACC 2030. The new initiative will elevate US cooperation with Caribbean countries to support climate adaptation, strengthen energy security, and accelerate the transition to clean energy, while building the resilience of critical infrastructure and local economies to the climate crisis. PACC 2030 specifically focuses on improving access to development financing, a priority for the region.
    PACC 2030 will work to expand existing access to project financing and unlock new financing mechanisms to support climate and clean energy infrastructure development in the region.
    Key actions under this pillar will include increasing US International Development Finance Corporation financing for climate and clean energy projects in underserved Caribbean countries, as well as collaborating with multilateral development banks and multilateral climate and environmental trust funds to improve the policy environment and unlock access to additional infrastructure financing for the Caribbean.
    The announcement of PACC 2030 followed President Biden’s launch earlier in the week of the Americas Partnership for Economic Prosperity, a historic new agreement to drive the hemisphere’s economic recovery and growth. Still reeling from the disproportionate impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Caribbean and Latin America have seen the deepest economic contraction of any region in the world.
    During the same meeting on Friday, Barbados’ Prime Minister Mia Mottley also addressed the multitude of challenges facing the hemisphere and the need for collective action. “That’s why I’ve come also to thank President Biden and Vice President Harris,” she said.
    “For too long there has been benign neglect, and the Partnership for the Americas as well as the Climate Partnership Pact 2030 offers us a real possibility of hope, but it is up to each of us to keep and hold each other accountable.
    We cannot achieve it overnight, but we are moving in the right direction.”
    In his remarks Friday at the Summit, Antigua and Barbuda Prime Minister Gaston Browne said, “right now there’s a confluence of troubling global events that require our collective and strong leadership to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic and to respond adequately to climate change and surmount the challenges of food insecurity and escalating oil prices.”

    WHO SAYS THAT the people of Cuba are not happy? Were they happy under Batista when foreign interest dominated and when the ordinary man’s position was neglected? When education was only for the rich? When production only benefited the rich and foreign interest? When Americans held huge interest and Batista left with a mountain of American dollars? America cannot accept even now, the bone in its craw.
    Were the people of Venezuela not better off when President Hugo Chavez attempted to share the benefits of the oil industry with enhancing the lives of the ordinary person? Chavez was trying to move them from living in holes that I saw in the mountains to decent housing living.
    Can you not compare the confusion seen by the people who disagree with the policies of the Cuban Government with the confusion and action on January 6, 2021 in America or the questionable argument of what women should do with their bodies in America; arguments that have virtually divided the country?
    Why is the United States (US) deciding that their system of government is such as to make it the perfect example of what government should be and to impose it on all nations? Who says that the people of China are unhappy given that a few years ago there was country wise abject poverty and now many are driving Mercedes Benzes?
    Well, on its own the US has made itself arbiter of who should attend the Summit of the Americas and who should not. It did not seek the opinion of others. Since almost all of the Caribbean nations are in a state of want, most will attend and feel that some US crumbs will fall from Dives’ table. Those who speak from Canada are very hopeful that manna will fall down from heaven. There is no stopping the trek by land and sea of those knocking at the door trying to enter the land of plenty and hope where they are not wanted.
    What we in Barbados need is easier and cheaper access to multinational institutions that wrongfully exclude us from help from favourable terms because we have been thrifty in managing our affairs.
    Apparently good management disqualifies us. Many are our previous efforts to highlight our situation – to no avail. It is time that debts are forgiven and converted to contributions to our tax revenue that cannot bear increasing. We have been begging for years. It has been reported that one of the issues to be raised by Barbados is the hackneyed issue of reparation. Are we not tired?
    Trinidad and Tobago was one of the first to declare that it will be attending as it has “important issues” to discuss – questionable, maybe oil now that Venezuela is excluded.
    You may recall that we sent a whole heap of big names to Washington just last month. No one has reported back to the people – waste of money for a joy ride. We played host to a few bigwigs from America that spoke on many issues, but what was discussed will have little or no influence on the summit. In the background, shadowing the summit are the pressing issues – financial and general that now beset the President.
    Just as America has decided who should attend the summit and who should not, the issues that will be discussed will centre on the current problems of America. What will they do to help us with the burden of debt? Look at the billions being spent on Ukraine. How will America help us with the coming problem of reduced food chain? What help can America give if disasters such as hurricanes or earthquake strike? Climate change is imminent and we already see our beaches invaded by Sargassum that threatens to undermine tourism. We do not know how or when the war in the Ukraine will directly involve us in the Caribbean/Barbados.
    The overall issue is whether or not Caribbean countries would stand up on principle on the moral issue of the exclusion of Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua. Besides being a moral issue, is what can be considered a bullying approach on the part of the US that is obviously taking advantage of the Lazarus position of many of the countries of the Americas and the Caribbean. If we have no principle, then Trump was right. You know Antigua is there.

    The world finally sees America for what it is – a country worse, in many cases, than those it seeks to police, convict and condemn to death.

    You shouldn’t focus on the figureheads of US government. Given the design of US legislative what power does a US president have in real terms if his party does not control the two houses? ESPECIALLY the Senate?

    Summit spoiler alert. An uninvited Central America country (beginning with the letter “C”) has called in the Russian army to participate in a number of events. Putin has accepted the invite; Biden will be foaming. Don’t you all just love geopolitics.

    Any USA Ambassador has to swear allegiance to the USA, so whether or not these people were born and/or raised in St. Vincent, their allegence is to the USA.
