Enclosed are the updated charts for the week ending 18th February. All the charts, except Daily deaths, are moving strongly in the right direction but have not yet reached a level where victory can be claimed. Government is initiating a new phase in the epidemic from next week but there is a new Omicron based variant that needs to be watched closely to ensure that we can quickly pivot and institute any new or modified measures necessary.     For clarification: I do NOT target all BAMP members but the BAMP board which is obviously composed of No-Covid sectarians.

    What we really need is universal vaccination from age 5 to 100 and the repeal of all other Corona measures to save the children (get them back in school as soon as possible) and the economy.

    The No Covid activists are just as fanatical and dangerous as the anti-vaccinationists.

    I therefore ask our National Security Council, chaired by our Supreme Leader, to bring the BAMP board into line or to deport them.

    New vaccinations by numbers
    Vaccination numbers September 2021 to February 17, 2022. These figures represent the new vaccinations for each month and not the overall total.
    September: 24 886 people received first doses while 11 194 were fully vaccinated.
    October: 12 985 people received first doses; 21 033 more fully vaccinated.
    November: 4 567 people first doses; 9 845 fully vaccinated.
    December: 2 366 first doses; 6 918 fully vaccinated.
    January: 2 716 first doses; 3 468 fully vaccinated.
    Up to February 17: 1 079 first doses; 1 642 fully vaccinated so far.

    Professor points to school issues
    There is more to the return to face-to-face classes than physical concerns, said a noted professor.
    Lecturer at the University of the West Indies, Professor Dwayne Devonish, has conducted research for the United Nations on the effective reopening of schools.
    This research was conducted in 2021 but still has relevance in light of face-to-face classes resuming tomorrow.
    “One of the things that needs to be done is a proper psychological assessment of both the teachers and students. You can have all the physical requirements in place but you still need to have a proper consultation. I recommend on the first day for principals to meet with teachers and parents in order to vent concerns as I have found there seems to be a divide on whether children are actually ready to return to school,” he said.
    Devonish, who specialises in management and organisational behaviour, said some parents and students were frustrated with online learning. He said there were also some people apprehensive about returning to school rooms in light of the prevailing pandemic.
    Psychological services
    “Another thing I recommend is to make psychological services available to teachers, parents and the children to help them adapt to what will be the new normal, that will be a key part of mental health readiness,” he said.
    The professor lauded the establishment of school monitors to help enforce the keeping of the COVID-19 protocols but said it needed to go further.
    “In our research we compared the protocol compliance level between primary and secondary schools and interestingly, we found there was more compliance among the primary school students. The Ministry of Education had deployed a number of school monitors at primary schools and our suggestion is to increase those monitors while also obtaining them at secondary schools as well. It is one thing to have protocols but you need to police them especially since the COVID-19 Monitoring Unit has its hands full in the tourism industry,” he said.
    In this regard, Devonish said the burden should not fall solely on the shoulders of the ministry. He said a ‘whole of society’ approach was required as Government did not have sufficient resources to provide the needed number of monitors.
    Own monitors
    “I think each school can help shore up the ministry and provide its own school monitors. It cannot be left only in the hands of a few stakeholders,” he said.
    Some of the other recommendations included in the research paper are: having a continuous monitoring and evaluation framework; supportive interventions for teachers and parents to help them cope more efficiently; consideration for guidance counsellors to conduct sessions with both parents and students; and integrate the protocol messaging into the health and family life curriculum.

    A bit “aggressive” but medically and scientifically justifiable, is how Dr Wayne Greaves, a Barbadian infectious disease specialist in the United States has cautiously endorsed Barbados’ decision to lift the COVID-19 curfew.
    “It isn’t unreasonable but if the decisions were in my hands I wouldn’t be quite so aggressive. The number of infections is continuing to fall and I would have loved to see deaths stabilised or continue to decrease, which is not yet happening. But in fairness, deaths typically lag the cases (of infections) and if you wait it would probably have taken another month for that to occur. It would make you a lot surer about what’s going to happen down the road,” he said.
    Greaves was quick to note that Barbados’ recent action was exactly what other countries and some states in America were doing and not waiting for deaths to stabilise or decrease before lifting the curfew.
    Minister of Health Ian Gooding-Edghill recently explained it was all part of Government’s plan “to move the country back to opening” while observing several of the protocols.
    “I don’t know what was the prevalence of the Omicron variant in Barbados, but personally I would have been less aggressive. The cases of infection are decreasing nicely but I would have wanted to wait until they have decreased (even more). I would have wanted to see that the deaths had stabilised but that hasn’t happened,” Greaves said.
    He acknowledged that global deaths rates routinely lagged the number of cases and conceded there was a measure of uncertainty about the path the virus was likely to take domestically and internationally.
    “I think if we (in Barbados) had waited until the cases had stabilised or decreased we would have been more certain about where we are going,” Greaves added.
    “While we can say that about 65 per cent of the eligible population was vaccinated, I don’t consider that the term ‘fully vaccinated’ against the Omicron variant to mean no (vaccine) booster” was required.
    The Barbadian added: “We know that without the booster, vaccines are really very, very weak, relatively ineffective against the Omicron variant.”
    He expressed concern about the situation facing under-15 year olds and the elderly, especially Barbadians with chronic medical conditions ranging from obesity, cancer and heart disease to diabetes and hypertension.
    Elderly deaths
    “It is instructive that most of the deaths in Barbados are occurring in the elderly or those with chronic medical conditions,” he said. “That was why a reasonable path forward would be to be very protective of those at the greatest risk and to relax the rules for those who are not in those categories. We shouldn’t throw caution to the wind.
    “We have seen in the United States that young children, those who never received a vaccine, have been affected quite a
    bit. I don’t know what the situation is in Barbados when it comes to those under 15 years old. In any case, that’s the group I would worry about,” he said. “The ones of greatest concern are the elderly and those with chronic medical conditions.”
    That was why he believed a reasonable path forward for Barbados was protection for the elderly while relaxing the rules “for those who are not in those categories. “I still wouldn’t throw caution to the wind”.
    Greaves said he believes Barbadians and others across the Caribbean would have to live with the virus for sometime to come, predicting that there would be other variants.
    Living with virus
    “I don’t see any prospect of herd immunity. I think we are going to have subsequent variants and this situation will continue for a while. We are just going to have to learn from the virus and live with it,” Greaves warned.
    “Hopefully we wouldn’t see another variant that is as severe as the Delta variant. We have to begin to move forward and if necessary adjust to it and learn to live with the virus.
    “It is a very humiliating situation we find ourselves in as scientists. It is going to be very difficult to be certain about what’s going to happen in the future,” he said.
    “We have proven to be wrong many, many times. Actually, there is no one clear cut approach that has consistently worked. It is very difficult to say there is only one way to tackle this epidemic,” he added.
    “We are not only dealing with the virus but also with human behaviour and that wasn’t something which can be controlled quite easily in a free and democratic society,” said the scientist, who believes “Barbados is moving in the right direction. Our decisions represent a balanced approach to the conundrum. That is why I consider the (curfew) decision a reasonable move.”

    If a mask is too tight it will impede blood flow to the brain, cause blurred vision and dizziness. Some mask cause my nose to run after and sneeze. Who checks the imported quality of mask into Barbados. #MaskScams are real.

    “In March 2020, New York State encountered its first official case of COVID-19. This novel coronavirus, referred to as SARS-COV 2, originated in Wuhan, China in December 2019. Within a short amount of time, hundreds of thousands of cases were diagnosed around the world, causing the World Health Organization to announce it as an infectious disease pandemic on January 30, 2020. New York City quickly became the epicenter of the United States COVID-19 pandemic due to its tremendous number of cases.
    COVID-19 is spread by respiratory droplets, and healthcare professionals are mandated to wear PPE when caring for COVID-19 patients. PPE includes gowns, gloves, masks, and face shields. Aside from a major shortage of PPE across the United States causing stress to hospital administrators and healthcare professionals on the front lines, many expressed added stress from adverse effects of prolonged PPE usage.
    The last incidence of prolonged use of PPE among healthcare professionals was during the SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome) outbreak in 2003-2004 which originated in Guangdong, China. Studies focusing on effects of prolonged use of PPE during the SARS outbreak were published in subsequent years. A study by Lim, et al. focused on headaches related to mask use [1], and another study by Foo, et al. discussed adverse skin reactions such as rashes, acne, and itching from mask use [2].
    The CDC and WHO recommend wearing N95 masks during care of patients with highly transmissible diseases such as tuberculosis, SARS, and COVID-19. The N in N95 stands for NIOSH, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health of the United States and 95 indicates filter efficiency of particles. Thus, an N95 mask is 95% effective at filtering airborne particles including very small ones. In comparison, while surgical masks provide a barrier against large respiratory particles, they are ineffective at providing protection from smaller particles. Surgical masks also do not prevent leakage around the mask when the user inhales. Therefore, surgical masks are ineffective and do not provide enough protection when performing direct care for patients with COVID-19 [3].
    To prevent the spread of COVID-19, hospitals required their employees and visitors to wear a mask at all times when in the facility. Generally, employees and visitors wore surgical masks, and when providing direct care for COVID-19 patients, the employees donned N95 masks.
    Wearing masks for a prolonged amount of time causes a host of physiologic and psychologic burdens and can decrease work efficiency. Activity cannot be performed as long or as efficiently while wearing masks as compared to when masks are not worn. Additionally, the timeframe that an activity can be sustained is decreased when wearing masks and PPE [4]. Prolonged use of N95 and surgical masks causes physical adverse effects such as headaches, difficulty breathing, acne, skin breakdown, rashes, and impaired cognition. It also interferes with vision, communication, and thermal equilibrium.
    Headaches related to prolonged mask use can be attributed to mechanical factors, hypercapnia, and hypoxemia. Tight straps and pressure on superficial facial and cervical nerves are mechanical features causing headaches [1]. Cervical neck strain from donning PPE, sleep deprivation, irregular mealtimes, and emotional stress are other sources of headaches among healthcare professionals during prolonged mask use [5]. Tight fitting masks cause inadequate ventilation and increased levels of carbon dioxide (CO2) known as hypercapnia. As CO2 is a known respiratory stimulant, a buildup of exhaled CO2 between the mask and face will cause increased lung ventilation and respiratory activity. Symptoms of hypoxemia such as chest discomfort and tachypnea are also noted in healthcare professionals with prolonged mask use. Exhaled CO2 builds up between the mask and face, and increased levels of CO2 cause confusion, impaired cognition, and disorientation [4].
    A hot and humid environment found in the facial region covered by masks, causes discomfort and hyperthermia. This may create a situation where the healthcare professional is unable to recognize dangers and perform manual tasks, and it also significantly affects motor skills [4]. The moist environment and pressure from tight fitting masks also block facial ducts. This can explain the increase of acne with prolonged mask use [2].
    Frequent PPE and mask changes may cause shearing and breakdown of the skin, and breakdown on the bridge of the nose and cheek bones can be attributed to tight fitting masks and goggles that put pressure on these specific areas [6].“

    In North America and Europe, children have been going back to school for a long time. Here, on the other hand, the BAMP board continues to torment the children with distance learning. How perverse. We are falling further and further behind the developed countries in education.

    Apparently, there are two types of Omicron virus. A non-lethal one that has been enabling schooling in persona in North America and Europe for a long time, and a very deadly one in the Caribbean. However, all joking aside. The very poor crisis management shows once again that our BAMP Aborigines are superstitious instead of sticking to medical facts. How sad.

    Every other child and adult in the USA is bloody obese and enjoys a very unhealthy diet thanks to cheap fast food daily.

    Thus, UWI failed in providing relevant health demographic comparison data.

    How many died from cancer in 2021?

    What percentage of the 49,000 identified NCD sufferers died from Covid-19 is represented by 309 persons?

    If we accept as the comment doc illustrated that science is a well developed discipline and that many professionals like him and Dr Graeves or Steinbok or Dr Scarborough and other Bajans learned their science well to go on and save lives and develop cures … then we must accept that there is some basis for this thing called ‘science’.

    Then we must further accept that if these scientists now disagree then either they 1) originally allowed flawed theories to be presented as real, 2) some are now mischaracterizing data to satisfy persona agendas or 3) there are legitimate differences from the scientific results which are yet to be clarified.

    But attacking each other so vigorously offers little other than to label the accusers as puerile.

    An expert generally can’t be a moron in the truest sense of the word; however, he or she can lie and obfuscate much better than any average Bajan and when they do that we have every right to question them just as vigorously!

    What is an ‘expert’ Boss…?

    Thanks for the memories wrt the rewards we received for regular attendance at church and sunday school. In my day I received both stamps and purple stars. I also sang in the Church Choir,hence my attachment to church music. We serve God in many professions.He ,along with you, chose where you are. I was heading for the Ministry as well ,hence my Classical 6 days. I am at peace with where I ended up.
