Debate about the commitment of the two political parties honouring promises outlined in glossy manifestos aside, the documents serve a useful reference for citizens to hold political parties accountable.

All agree the last twenty years in particular have gotten progressively challenging for Barbados and Barbadians. The outgoing government with its bevy of financial consultants have focused mainly on executing macroeconomic arrangements. However, the harsh economic condition of the last decade and a half has meant less disposal income and some destruction of wealth for the middle and upper class. Of equal concern to the blogmaster is the lack of investment opportunity for wealth generation available to Barbadians, especially after the domestic debt restructure.

What does a check of the manifestos share with the public by the two main parties – Democratic Labour Party (DLP) and Barbados Labour Party (BLP) on plans to address the lack of investment opportunities?

The DLP makes no direct reference in the manifesto about a plan to create or facilitate opportunities for Barbadians to invest. It is embedded in general and vague language. The BLP’s message is more direct – see page below.

This is important because it is no secret the economic pie is disproportionately owned by minority groups in Barbados, comprised of less than 10% of the population. Why would majority Black political parties not prioritize implementing policy to afford mainly Black Barbadians greater opportunity to invest? Some will dismiss the manifestos as fluff, BUT, what else does the citizen have to hold the parties accountable?

There is little doubt in the mind of the blogmaster who added to the coffers in the last 20 years.

There is little doubt in the mind of the blogmaster who added debt.

  1. CHRIS CALL
Sinckler says election will come down to leadership
    By Carol Martindale
    Editor-in-Chief
Wednesday’s General Election will come down to one basic issue – that of leadership.
That’s according to former Minister of Finance and parliamentarian Chris Sinckler, in an exclusive interview with the Sunday Sun yesterday.
The former Democratic Labour Party Member of Parliament for St Michael North West, who lost that seat in the 2018 General Election, said that while at the macro level the central issue in all elections was leadership, the DLP was also making it about leadership.
    Message of styles
“Leadership in terms of leadership style. They criticise the Prime Minister’s leadership style [saying] she is dictatorial. So that is the message they are pushing. And they are saying that the president of the Democratic Labour Party (DLP), or the person on that side, will have a different style,” he added.
Referring to Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley, the political leader of the Barbados Labour Party, and Verla De Peiza, president of the DLP, Sinckler said Barbadians had a choice between “two different styles, two different approaches, two different levels of experiences”, adding they are both very well qualified and intelligent people. “One is clearly more known and tried than the other because Verla has never held political office in terms of a ministry, so there is a little unknown quantity. Then you have Prime Minister Mottley who has 30 years experience in public life, has been in Parliament for a considerable period of time, has held various ministerial portfolios and had three and a half years as the ultimate office holder politically, which is Prime Minister,” he said.
Sinckler, who said he was still a member of the DLP, gave the edge to Mottley, stating: “I think if you look at it to be fair, there is a kind of disparity because of Prime Minister Mottley’s obvious experience and knowledge in terms of how Government functions [and] her international stardom. She has clearly shaped the Labour Party into her own party now. I think you have to tick that box for Prime Minister Mottley because she is at her political peak. She has her team behind her, she has her party behind her, she has her core message. People know what her ideas are.”
Sinckler, who was one of the Dems’ firebrand speakers on the election platform, also spoke out about “cracks” within the DLP on the issue of leadership.
He observed that De Peiza was not being referred to as the party’s leader on political platforms, noting this to be a problem.
“This issue of leadership is a big issue in my view. You have a situation where due to factors, some beyond their control, some within their control, there is a situation where there is not a clearly defined leader of the party accepted across the board by the members of the party who are running. The reason why I say that is the constitution of the DLP designates ‘political leader’ as the person who leads the parliamentary group, but if you don’t have a parliamentary group, then constitutionally you don’t have a parliamentary leader. What you have is a president.
“The president’s post is more administrative than it is political leader type, because that has always come out of the assembly in terms of the parliamentary group.
“With that kind of conundrum existing, that challenge constitutionally, it has spilled over into a situation where, even though the president has had challenges, fought back those challenges successfully, has led the process, has reformed the party, has been able to get the candidates nominated and ready to face the polls, she is not recognised as the leader.
    Challenge
He said none of senior people has introduced her on political platform as the next Prime Minister of Barbados.
“So you have the challenge where if you elect the DLP to Government, the next day, who exactly is going to go the President [Dame Sandra Mason]? And even if you don’t win the Government but enough . . . seats, who is going to be the Leader of the Opposition?
“Would it be Dr [David] Estwick who is clearly preparing himself for that? Will it be Mr [Richard] Sealy? Clearly he could put a stake, or Michael Lashley, who I wouldn’t write off at all even though he hasn’t said or demonstrated through actions that he was interested . . . . The question is, who?”
He argued this ambiguity was a challenge for the party, and so there was “a campaign in a campaign” being run within the DLP, which would affect its success at the polls.
Sinckler, who also volunteered to serve on Government’s Jobs and Investment Council, has returned to the Caribbean Policy Development Centre, working on a project sponsored by the Open Society Foundation on debt and international development finance reform. He admitted this was the first time in 30 years he has not been actively involved in any kind of political campaigning.
He said since the loss in 2018, he decided to take a break, “come out of the system and reflect” and spend more time with his family.

  2. The former Senator knew this AFTER she was fired from Cabinet?

    Moe: Mia not the same

By Gercine Carter gercinecarter@ nationnews.com Former Barbados Labour Party (BLP) senator Lucille Moe has expressed fear about Barbados’ direction under the leadership of Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley.
Moe, who was removed from Mottley’s Cabinet in 2020, recently switched from the BLP to take a position as a consultant to the Democratic Labour Party (DLP).
In an exclusive interview with the Sunday Sun yesterday, she bared her soul about the decision to quit the BLP and to part ranks with Mottley.
“I have known Mia Mottley for well over 50 years and I considered her to not just be a friend. I thought of Mia more like my little sister.”
But in a changed tune, Moe said she was “afraid”.
“I became afraid . . . because of all that was happening. Everybody deals with power differently and as hard as this is to say, I am still somewhat afraid of her . . . . As I watch what is transpiring in Barbados it gives me that cause for concern.”
Moe suggested that while there was much speculation and all kinds of suggestions about her decision “to go and help the Democratic Labour Party”, that move was linked more to her desire to see democracy in Barbados protected.
    Principled position
“Sometimes you have to take a principled position on issues. It is a matter of ensuring that the country I know and that I love continues to be the Barbados that I know. Barbados is a country known for fairness and right now I think a lot of things in our country are unfair.”
She added: “As far as I am concerned, Barbados needs to have a level of democracy. It is clear that having all 30 seats has not worked well for us.
“Mia has changed and I am sad to say she is not the Mia that I have known for a long time. I do not know if it is because of her becoming Prime Minister and of course prime ministers have lots of power,” Moe said.
    ‘How I feel’
“I am resigned to my fate because I know that after I tell you all that I am saying, and it becomes known how I feel, everybody is going to come after you, but at the end of the day, somebody has to do what is right.”
Quoting German priest Martin Niemoeller’s “First they came for the Socialists and I did not speak out because I was not a socialist . . . then they came for me and there was no one to speak for me,” Moe said: “That is how I feel about Barbados in 2022. Somebody has to come and speak out and say what is happening. Someone has to come out and say that Barbados is not a one-party state. It is democracy and democracy must be protected in our country.”

The minorities are RIGHT TO LAUGH.

Mia was WARNED to put her people first, there is not a minority on earth that would put HER before their own people, they should be drinking champagne every day off the self-hating clowns determined to make sure their people ARE LAST in every social and financial RANKING and watch them sink deeper and deeper into poverty and degradation….

why would it make sense to enrich others and LEAVE YOUR PEOPLE in bondage, suffering, killing and injuring each other out of frustration because there are NO OPPORTUNITIES, no hope or access to their money for them, and you feel PROUD OF YOURSELF….it’s the PEOPLE’S TURN NOW..

“All I want to say is that they don’t really care about us”.

That was one of the mantras being chanted by the nurses of Barbados as they marched in protest of being poorly treated by this Government.

Like a lot of Barbadians today, I personally have many grouses with this Government and its treatment of Barbadians across the board.

Many of my articles speak to why the Rastafari community should not support the re-election campaign of this Government, so I will not touch that matter in this article.

This article is being written in support of the marching nurses, and the “unfaired”, in Barbados.

I was unable to attend the march, but I am fully in support of the nurses, who after being some of the first on the frontline to address the COVID-19 situation, are now being treated in a manner unbecoming of any Government that truly cares.

It would seem that the slogan used by the Government in the last election, “Mia Cares”, is the same slogan that will be used as a yardstick to judge her and her party in the court of the people’s opinion.

Many Barbadians are waking up to the reality about this Government. I have had conversations with a Minister in her Government who prior to the calling of the elections was fed up and disgusted with his party’s handling of several affairs including those of Rastafari.

This is a person who when convenient was thrown under the bus by the Prime Minister, whispered a little about internal infelicities in the party, was given a hush-position, and now is on the road running again for his party, who he knows fails the people in many ways.

Picture this: You are responsible for hosting a very important race in which you will partake. You start the race when you have a head start.

Due to your delayed announcement of the race, it has put the other runners at a disadvantage. If this were the case we would be quick to say that was unfair, even if it was within the rules of the race to do so.

Being legal does not make something right or even ethical.

This is what Mia and her Mottley crew have done as it pertains to the blitz attack, calling of this election. The calling of this election was done at a time when COVID positive cases were sure to be on the drastic rise.

After the Old Year’s Night celebration as expected there was a notable increase in COVID-19 cases, and the Government took that opportunity to announce COVID-19 positive people will be denied their right to vote; just another right that this government is taking away from the people without a second thought. Is this the type of Government Barbados wants? Is this the type of politics Barbados wants? As I drive about Barbados now, all I can see are the government’s posters all over the place. If I were a visitor to the island I would think only one party was in this election.

This will go down in the history of Barbados as the most unfair election of all time. Is all fair in love and war? Can Barbados afford to give a Government that does not care about the will of the people a second term in office? Can Barbados afford to give a Government which has no qualms about letting Barbados know how stupid its masses are when they question a national medical procedure that is being imposed on them? Can Rastafari in Barbados afford to support a Government that has without a second thought, denied them their freedom from cannabis persecution, and therein an opportunity to truly develop and empower themselves? Can parents support a Government that had little to say about the call to pit children against parents as it pertains to the experimental COVID 19 vaccine? Can Barbados afford a government which cannot get anti-corruption/integrity legislation passed but can advance a number of other bills and superficial initiatives? Barbados clearly needs an administration that truly represents the wishes of the majority of its citizens. It needs a government with some sort of political scruples.

Barbados needs a Government that respects the rights of its people.

This is the perfect opportunity for Barbados to hold its representatives accountable, and to show successive Governments what will be their fate should they disrespect and disobey the will of the masses.

Take away your vote and watch her.

this is definitely not good, those two were very close and if she says she is AFRAID…the people should be even MORE AFRAID of what can happen to them next under this FALSE POWER…this temporary immunity and TAKE AWAY THOSE DIPLOMATIC PASSPORTS before they are MISUSED TO REALLY DESTROY BLACK LIVES EVEN MORE…than they are already succeeding to demote. reduce, box in and TRAP into new age SLAVERY……and wo knows what else their CRIMINAL MINORITY FRIENDS got planned for Black lives with THEIR BLESSINGS and PERMISSION..

i have been hearing these types of things for YEARS AND YEARS…but was willing to watch it play out, just in case it was rumor, but if the people DON’T LEARN AND ACT NOW…they never will and it will be THEIR FUNERAL…literally..

pure nonsense, they all went to the same schools, are in the SAME CABAL and carry the same BACKWARD COLONIZED MENTALITY and accused of the SAME THINGS AS LAWYERS, where their people are ALWAYS LAST in EVERY SOCIAL STANDING even when the MONEY IS THEIRS.

..besides, saw Mrs. Maloney’s husband and DLP opposition pretending to have a fight in the newspapers a while back with him threatening lawsuit, does that sound familiar, when Mrs.Maloney was castigating DLP for enriching her husband on VIDEO, hundreds of millions of dollars to A BILLION DOLLARS worth IN LAND and other UNDESERVED enrichment….at the PEOPLE’S EXPENSE…did not hear the same opposition leader COMPLAIN or EXPOSE ANY OF IT as a then senator…WHILE IT WAS HAPPENING..

..next thing you know, government changes and Mrs. Maloney’s husband was the government agent bypassing AstraZeneca pharmaceuticals to source vaccines from an entertainment company and the treasury would have taken at least a 48 MILLION DOLLAR HIT if he had not been ROBBED (according to him) still waiting to here if the case is still in a Florida court…….. the game players…let’s see how it plays out…..let’s see if the fake disagreement does not turn into another VACCINE-LIKE SCAM…

Has he been GIVEN A TIMELINE FOR IT?

Does he believe he will SEE IT IN HIS LIFETIME?

Does he believe it will EVER HAPPEN even after we ARE ALL GONE?

‘I’m afraid!’, Moe says power has changed PM Mottley – by Barbados Today January 16, 2022

    By Wade Gibbons

    and Kimberley Cummins

Former Government Senator Lucille Moe has expressed fears about Prime Minister Mia Mottley being given another mandate to run Barbados’ political affairs.

Moe, who served as Minister of Information, Broadcasting and Public Affairs in Mottley’s administration up to July 2020, told Barbados TODAY she has known the Barbados Labour Party leader for over 50 years, considered her a “little sister” and had been very protective of her over the years. However, the daughter of late former Barbados attorney general and Chief Justice of Belize, George Moe, said she had no choice but to disassociate herself from her erstwhile friend. Moe said she believes in democracy and that power had changed the Mottley she knew.

“I’ve been in politics for the better part of my life, in my early life when I was at secondary school my father was a politician. And I’ve watched all, I know all of them, Errol Barrow coming right through, what is the difference to me with Mia, is Mia has changed, she’s got real power because the power of the prime minister is great under the Parliamentary democracies we have in these Caribbean islands. And regrettably Mia has changed; she is not handling the power like you thought she would have.

“I mean I was so excited three and a half years ago when she won, but she has become, to such a point, dictatorial in her style of politics. She is autocratic and she does not allow anyone to have any kind of view or opinion; everybody must be in the Mia Mottley choir. Or it is problem for you. And it got to the point I could not take it anymore,” she said.

Moe, who has worked with Mottley as a strategist, campaign manager and confidante in every general election since 1991, admitted that she and others had grown afraid of the St Michael North East representative.

“It has gotten so bad to be honest, regrettably, I have become afraid of Mia Mottley. I am afraid of her. I am afraid of someone I used to think of as my little sister. It is not just me that is afraid of her, a lot of others are too, but they are so frighten to talk because they are afraid of what will happen to them. I know doing what I do, I have sealed my fate and she will come after me and I know exactly what is going to happen and that is fine. I have decided somebody has to speak out, and let it be me,” Moe explained.

File: Senator Lucille Moe formerly served as Minister of Information, Broadcasting and Public Affairs.
She added: “So I am speaking for myself and all the other people who are afraid of Mia Mottley because if I am and if I have known her for over 50 years, a woman that I thought of as my little sister, read a lesson at my father’s funeral and I can sit here and tell you that I am afraid of her, I know how other Barbadians and other people she is around feel. And that is why I knew I had to go and try to get democracy back in this country. This can’t be 30 seats and one woman as a dictator, that is what it has become and I am not comfortable with that, that is not the Barbados I know.”

Moe said she was going public with her reasons for leaving the Barbados Labour Party to dismiss all the rumours that were being circulated about her leaving the “comfort” of the BLP for the Democratic Labour Party (DLP).

“We cannot have this 30-love situation, it is ridiculous because all we end up with is what we have now. I don’t want to go into detail about things that have been done to other people, I’m not going there, I can talk about myself. So, I speak with authority when I’m speaking about myself. This is not any hearsay, what she did to other people and all of that, all of that is there and anyone who has ever had to interact with her, because they said something she didn’t like, they would know the exact behaviour to expect. And that is now going three and a half years into a term. Can you imagine another 30 -love, what that would do to this country and what she would be like?

“So I knew that for me, for my own ability to sleep at night, my own ability to be comfortable in my own country, I know we must restore democracy in this country. And that is why I felt I needed to leave the comfort out there in the Barbados Labour Party and go to the Democratic Labour Party, because we need democracy,” she said.

Moe said it was wrong of Mottley to call a general election while Barbados was experiencing a spike in Covid-19 cases.

“This election has shown me that there are no holds barred to what will be done in order to be able to hold onto power. Why would you have an election in the middle of a pandemic with a spike? COVID is here to stay, so you will end up having an election with COVID but not when the numbers are climbing. So, when the numbers are climbing and you can see what is happening at these meetings and gatherings, just to work in the campaign, everything is bringing people together, they are all super spreaders.

“When you go into a campaign office with 15 people trying to hustle ‘bout and do labels to send out, circulars to people and all of that- all super spreaders. I don’t care how many masks you put on. People handling envelopes and passing it to you and you putting on stickers and all that- get real. In the middle of a surge, the numbers would have to be a lot flatter. What was the urgency? Power. That is what it was, hold on to power- that’s all it is. Everybody knows that if they are honest but the problem is a lot of people are afraid to say it. They are saying it quietly behind closed doors,” she stated.

Asked if Mottley was forced to call the early general election because of rumoured moves by her parliamentary colleagues to oust her as Prime Minister, Moe responded: “I will not comment because anything I say on that would be hearsay because I am not in the Cabinet and I was not on island to be participant to any effort to remove her. I heard the rumours, but for me there were rumours because I wasn’t there.”

Moe said there was a need for reform in Barbados’ general election procedures.

“The way in which political campaigns in Barbados are run, you really need reform. Reform in all kinds of ways. You need boundary realignment; a lot of these boundaries are not in step with what is required by law. No one has made any effort to do that and gone back to another election without having done that. There should be a 50 per cent differential between one seat, and that’s the maximum you can have, and we have constituencies that are out of step, they have been out of step and no one has done anything about it and gone into another election.

“We need campaign finance reform. The methodology used to finance campaigns is part of the reason why you even have the one about integrity legislation. That is one of the things you should worry about, not about when you get into office and who may get into some type of skullduggery on government contracts. You got to worry about the way in which they get there in the first place and then because of the way in which it is structured, there are no real limits to your ability to raise money for a campaign, what the limit is or what you can spend on a voter, even that is ridiculous,” she said.

Moe also noted that taxpayers needed to ask questions about the role director of communications and social media, Charles Jong, was playing in Barbados at the expense of the public purse. She noted that reference to Dominica and St Kitts could provide them with answers. (WG/KC)

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Is this the same loud-mouth who obsequiously subjected himself for 8 years to the ‘worst’ kind of leadership ever seen in the political history of Barbados under the great King Fumble?

Wasn’t he the very MoF who waived the duties and taxes on a Merc to be driven around Barbados by a ghost of a Sales Director working at an imaginary erection called the Hyatt Mausoleum?

Is he singing for his political supper hoping for a ministerial rebirth to replace Lucille or Lyn in the new Senate or the Bajan brand of Knighthood from the non-dick-tator HRH MAM?

Why didn’t he put his competencies where his proactive big mouth was through the implementation of that same structural adjustment programme outlined in his own ministerial statement of December 2013?

Wouldn’t he have been credited for the outcome of his actions (by the same MAM administration) to save Barbados from the same economic conditions prevailing today just as the true leader Sir Lloyd had to administer the bitter medicine from which the spindrift OSA benefited tremendously?

Bajans shall soon see the true leadership qualities of MAM when the rubber of financial adjustments will be forced to hit the economic road.

Unlike you, Mr. Stinkliar,Verla d. P is not a patented bullshitter or the charismatic clown and clearly knows not only her Ps & Qs but also ‘basic’ arithmetic like converting a complex percentage into a simple decimal by knowing the difference in fiscal impact from a rate of 0.7% and 0.07 when it comes to matters of taxation.

The blogmaster read Chris Sinckler’s article. You should ask yourself if it is strange coincidence both articles conveniently appear in the weekend paper before the election. We live to be played

    Xxxxx
What u ought to be doing as a media practitioner is receiving both informations with an unbaised analytical eye instead of a political eye
BTW what are your thoughts on Moe comments about Mottley as well as what Sinckler stated

  30. David BU @ 6:34 A.M

You need to go on a sabbatical.
Moe public disclosures have clearly thrown you into a state of insanity !
Why are you so disenchanted with – free speech and – fair comment from BU commenters ?
    Bun…..your dictatorial behaviour !

    Leave such to MAM !

  31. What is Lucille Moe role in the DLP campaign team

DLP are fighting for their salary and additional income perks

  32. @Fractured BLP

Not really, been here done this you know it.

Recall when your man Hartley Henry- coincidentally a political strategist like Moe- landed himself in hot water with Carol Martindale?

I actually had questions about the Moe move, colonial politics which none of them invented is a NASTY dirty low class no class game, but the truth is the truth, “we” can put away “our” political spectacles and DEAL WITH THE TRUTH as delivered….

colonial politics makes IDIOTS of colonized minds….makes them believe they have more power THAN THEY ACTUALLY HAVE…

.one of these days yall ,may meet REAL POWER and understand much better what it REALLY IS and SIGNIFIES…

.you will never find it under a colonial system, all ya will get is wannabe dictatoral attitudes at different levels….from mild to severe…that’s all they will ever be capable of…don’t say ya weren’t warned..

  34. If DLP win, will corruption investigations against them be squashed

  35. “colonial system”

there can be a distinction between World’s Systems of Government
and the colonial systems of Babylon from Romans to Roman Britain

Barbados Government systems such as Parliament, Justice Legal Court Systems will be reviewed in Constitutional amendments tabled

  36. This episode reminds me of the period when Thatcher reigned supreme. It led to the forced resignation of several of her top ranked ministers, one of them being Sir Geoffrey Howe.

His resignation speech was so withering that it led to her been forced out of office.

For Mia, read Thatcher; for Moe, read Howe. Oh were art though Mr Austin?

In the victories of the mind
will this be your only consolation cum the hump day of this week
do you predict a DLP win or loss feeling in your bone marrow

There is a huge argument on a platform about which has been the most wicked government in the last half century, so is that what it has finally reached to….who has outdone the other in wickedness against the Black population…so it was a competition to see who could outdo the other in reducing the people to nothing, really..

…how did it reach to this, why weren’t they paying attention and LISTENING TO WARNINGS….years worth of warnings…now the whole world gets to see what was so successfully covered up for DECADES….

i am telling others, stop trying to cover any of this up…it’s everywhere now…

I said months ago on this blog that the Duopoly is cannibalistic and will eventually eat itself. This is no “WOW” moment for me this is the impending destruction of our country by the political evil that exists called the Duopoly.
However what is even more profoundly laughable of some is that they are comparing the mouthing of a failed Minister of Finance, who is saying that one party may change its leader (DLP) ; to a former cabinet Minister(BLP) and “ best friend” who is openly referring to the Prime Minister of Barbados as a tyrant , who destroys those who disagree. with her.
Let them eat themselves. I hope all the comedians who come here daily protecting the status quo, will now wake up and realise that those whom they choose to cuss for the BLPDLP , are not in the least surprised of what the whole country is reading this morning.
The best thing to do is sit back and read what the : apologists, obstructionists and propagandists, will offer.
Political clowns and cannibals. A dangerous mix. Like crocodiles they cry while they eat you.
Enjoy your tea/ coffee. Watch the political bloodbath.
    Peace.

  43. Not a political cannibal
Don’t rice at no.politician house or look for any financial piece meal pocket book financial help from any party
However in a democracy are free to say whatever I feel

  44. Good thread David.
Exposes the challenges we face to empowering a new generation adn promoting true entrepreneurship.

The status quo seems the be the same throughout and with labour weakened I am not sure how minorities will “rise up”

You also mentioned “it is strange coincidence both articles conveniently appear in the weekend paper before the election. We like to be played.”

That hit the nail on the head perfectly.

    Just observing

  45. “The best thing to do is sit back and read what the : apologists, obstructionists and propagandists, will offer.”

U and War U keep repeating same points
which seems to somewhat reduce their validity to absurdity
repeating things daily should always be a new awakening
    of awareness and consciousness

We get the governments we deserve.

  47. otherwise Bajans have an inferiority complex

  48. Barbados must diversify now or face doom.

    Barbados’ Debt Crisis:
The Effects of Colonialism and Neoliberalism
“Barbados’s tourism industry has grown rapidly over the past fifty years. Even
though the industry employs almost ten percent of the population, the debt incurred from
establishing and maintaining the tourism industry in Barbados only adds to this crisis( debt crisis). Barbados’
debt that was initially $25.7 million dollars in 1965, rose to $1 billion in 1992, and then to $7.92
billion dollars in 2017. This significant increase of the country’s debt has caused Bajans to pay
higher revenue taxes, which is being used as payments on the debt. It is impossible for over
7.92 billion dollars to not be re-structured, and paid by a declining population where 9.2% is
    unemployed.

While tourism brought in over $262 million USD in 2014, the majority of the money did
not stay in the island. The majority of tourism profits are funneled out of the island through a
process called leakage where, “the real economic benefits of tourism to a country are not
revealed by gross foreign-exchange earnings but by what is left over after deducting the amount
that stays or returns overseas.”40 In the case of Sandals, they have been exempt from paying
import duties and taxes on all necessities for business for the next 19 years. While Sandals is
enjoying the benefits of being a tax-free corporation for the next nineteen years, they are also
taking their profit overseas. This concept of leakage is not only applicable to hotels, but also
when considering the importation of food and other luxury items for the purposes of accommodating tourists…”

“Many environmental issues in the island are caused by hotels and cruise ships. For
example, along the southern coast of the island last year (2018), there was an emergence of raw
sewage. This sewage contaminated the beaches along the south coast leaving an awful smell in
the air. While many officials in the Barbados Water Authority have claimed it was due to an
internal sewage plant problem, I argue the massive influx of cruise ships also contributed to the
pollution. For instance, a “3,000-person cruise ship generates 210,000 gallons of sewage
    weekly.”

    Environmental impact of Tourism:

    World news
Cruise line fined $18m for dumping waste at sea
Royal Caribbean Cruises, the world’s second largest cruise line, has agreed to pay a record $18m fine (£11.4m) for illegally dumping tonnes of waste oil and chemicals into US waters.

Cruise ships poisoning city air with sulphur as much as cars – new data reveals

Cruise ships are choking Europe’s port cities with the biggest cruise company, Carnival Corporation, emitting 10 times more sulphur oxides (SOx) than all of Europe’s 260 million cars, new research shows. Royal Caribbean Cruises, the world’s second largest cruise operator, emits four times the SOx of the European car fleet.

Five Things You Need to Know About Cruise Ship Pollution

More than 30,000 gallons of treated human waste (or blackwater) are flushed into the sea every day, causing bacterial growths and contaminating fisheries.
Waste generated by laundries, showers, sinks and dishwashers (graywater) is the biggest pollutant created by the industry; roughly 225,000 gallons of gray water are treated and dumped into the ocean every day.
Roughly 75 to 80 percent of the trash generated aboard ships—including glass, plastic bottles, cans, paper, cardboard and food waste, or about two pounds of solid waste per passenger every day—is incinerated on board, the ash dumped into the sea. The rest is taken back to port, but often overwhelms local landfills… so it ends up dumped into the ocean.
A variety of toxic “Many environmental issues in the island are caused by hotels and cruise ships. For

Bilge water is a mix of seawater and oil from routine maintenance, which ends up collecting at the bottom of the ship. An average ship generates eight tons of the oily combo every day. While it is supposed to be stored and dumped onshore, a number of cruisers have been caught dumping it at sea.
One cruise ship emits as much exhaust gases as 5,000,000 cars!

    Hi

  49. Bajan politicians must master the art of saying nothing when they have nothing bad to say.

In 2018 we will be negative against a person; in 2022 we will heap faint praise on the same person, and at a later date that same person will be severely castigated by us.

Let’s admit it. Our politics is nothing more than a game. Some may have core beliefs, but the key players do not.
They are going to say and do what keeps money flowing into their pocket. Yesterday’s villains are today’s heroes and tomorrow we may decide to change or keep them in the same category.
