On December 27, 2021 a snap election was called. Previous threads speak clearly to this author’s view of the soundness of that decision. But, to say that we are in unprecedented time is to put it mildly.

First, we have never had a 30-0 wipeout. It is therefore inevitable that the DLP will receive opposing votes. The amount is still left to be seen but based on the apathy, frustration and recent criticisms of the sitting PM the opposition may actually be larger than expected.

Secondly, we have a very short election. Discounting Old Year’s night and the weekend campaigns there was essentially only 2 ½ weeks. To their credit the DLP seem to have been “almost” ready when others thought they weren’t. To their detriment though they still have a bit more to do to convince the electorate that they are a government in waiting. Criticism of the present government does not automatically get the support of the electorate.

Thirdly, there are divisions. Divisions in both parties, divisions among the labour unions, divisions in the civil service, divisions in the Electoral and Boundaries Commission, division in the communities. There is absolutely no way that a heated election with a popular but not as popular Prime Minister faced with a new opposition in Parliament will help those divisions. The spin about a need for a united country being the reason for calling elections was BS and we all know it. The PM should know better than to take us for idiots.

Lastly, Covid. The news that Covid positive people cannot vote was a shocker. For a government to make this call and not consider this eventuality is almost criminal and, yes, I believe should be punished with the relevant vote. Based on the current rate there are 3880 persons in isolation with an average of 300 being added each day over the last 7 days. We were told that it will get worse. This means that around 5000+ persons will not be able to exercise their right to vote.

In 2013, 20 seats were decided by less than 200 votes. Other elections in some constituencies over the years reflect this margin as a norm. Have we decided to gamble with our elections and votes?

This is a critical time in our history for many reasons but it seems that regrettably, a rash unnecessary political decision was made for a hopeful political outcome that has rendered the genuine national good as secondary to a selfish motive. In 2022 we should be better than this.

Whoever wins, whatever comes, we will have tough times ahead in all aspects and areas. Will the real leaders and thinkers please stand up???

They are right to take the people for fools, a lot of them love to play the part…

  2. If Epstein, Maxwell, and his ex- Royal Highness Prince Andrew had committed their alleged misdemeanours on Barbados soil no one would have batted an eyelid..

The same with the holocaust in Germany.

I despair reading comments these days on BU. It really has become the theatre of the absurd.

Not far fetched at all. We did give the former slave master our highest national honor on the very same day
we were breaking away from his empire that formerly enslaved us.
Now if we can get away with that. We can get away with anything.
We honour you, Massa for the rape, murder and emasculation of our people.
    Peace.

@David, LOL throwshade tho they be … the fact is they are likely correct re the sexcapade Epstein matter!

Based on the numerous allegations of teacher-school girl sexual assault in our school system which have gone uninvestigated and or un-prosecuted over the years that’s a fair presumption.

The holocaust issue would have been prosecuted, eventually. Even Bajans have a threshold that when crossed is punished 😇… to wit : not a single seat for Dem in 2018!

But anyhow the Americans and the Brits did take FOREVER and a day to bring charges against Epstein, not so! … And then to miraculously let him hang himself just so … tut tut!

And just now we gine get a sealed settlement outta court and Andrew’s only comeuppance will be the rescission of all those fancy Grenadines medals and other trappings . 🤦🏾‍♂️

So yes Bajans bad fah truth but de first world countries dem got MANY different ways like assisted suicide and ‘no blame’ settlements to enable “the theatre of the absurd” also.

We just gotta do much better at punishing some ah we big wig bad boys/girls, that’s all.

    Just saying 😇!

A smart call….if….the objective is to keep power for as long as you can.
“The only thing remaining to be done was to continue the structural reforms that came out of the online survey we did with the public of Barbados saying what they wanted in terms of SOEs [state-owned enterprises] and the services delivered,” Dr. Greenidge said.
I am confident you completed that survey, and received the lengthy and detailed summary of results provided to all those who completed it. We expected nothing less from this transparent administration. So you know, and will appreciate the forthcoming changes, wanted by Barbadians.
However, for those who did not complete the online survey, watch and listen for the structural reforms. I can only imagine a few persons in “Woodsian” fashion, telling us they did not understand “structural reform” meant anything related to what occurs over the next 18 months.
And remember, it is all the IMF fault
Put May 2023 in your calendar for a comment on who might an election if called then.

“I despair reading comments these days on BU. It really has become the theatre of the absurd.”

sorry to say, it’s becoming a little frightening for those we know are mentally vulnerable..

don’t know why the popular sentiment on the island is that it’s ok to commit crimes as long as it’s AGAINST THE BLACK POPULATION…and as long as nonblacks committing crimes it’s OK….and somehow most people agree with that…a very dangerous ideology….that has carried into the 21st century to the detriment of EACH SUCCESSIVE GENERATION for the last 75 YEARS…and ACCEPTABLE….that’s the part that is HORRIFYING…..and the demons in the parliament SEE NOTHING WRONG WITH THAT….

“We did give the former slave master our highest national honor on the very same day”

Charles was so bored he fell asleep, while the fools ran themselves ragged..

not to mention that the new president/agent is still modeling all the dead empire’s symbols/titles and pretending to be head of a republic with no republic consititution….are these even LOOKING AT THEMSELVES…steuppps..keep telling them they will NOT BE HIJACKING a 400 year old slave system to use against the Black/Afrikan population, without BEING EXPOSED ALL ACROSS THE EARTH…

  10. @NorthernObserver January 14, 2022 11:10 PM “Are advance polls not legal in Barbados?
How many people need to be accommodated?”

Advance pools are legal. I’ve voted in an advance pool myself when I worked as a poll clerk in multiple elections.

How many people need to be accomodated?
about 500 people per day are becoming positive, but about 100 are children who cannot vote anyhow. In Barbados elections the turnout is about 60%.

My math is not very good but let’s say

500 Covid positive people x14 days before they can be released from isolation=7,000 people; of whom 100 per day are children who cannot vote anyhow that leaves 5,600 Covid positive adults, minus the 40% or 2,240 who won’t turn out to vote even if offered a chauffeur driven limo, that leaves about 3360 “disenfranchised” people. Since Covid19 does not recognize B nor D nor any other letter of the alphabet [except the Greek alphabet, alpha, delta, omicron etc. ] I anticipate that of these 3360 people about 3% or 33 votes might have gone to Independents/third parties, with the rest pretty evenly divided between B’s and D’s, about 1663 for each of the two major parties. But somebody will tell me that my analysis is “simplistic” as though I wasn’t round town long, long, long.

But because of covid the turnout may well be even lower than usual 60 something percent, so the number of “disenfranchised” voters may be even lower than my highly scientific analysis.

What can be done at the last minute? The government can make a decision to release people from isolation/quaarantine in 5 days instead of 10 or 14 as is already being done in the great white north.

  11. The great white north with 5 day isolation periods for asymptomatic people being the USA, Canada, Spain, Portugal, Greece. The UK and Ireland with a 7 day isolation periods.

shark oil, whale oil, vitamins, Wonder World etc does the trick.”

I follow the recipe of centenarian Bajans fresh air, sunshine, physical work ground food, the Lord, small quantities of rum now and then, and something else which they swear by but which is NEVER mentioned in “respectable” publications.

But I am not a health professional so don’t take any advice from me, maybe not from centenarians either, almost none of whom went to school past the age of 13 and NONE of whom went to HC, QC, or Cawmere, so you need not listen to them either.

  13. The DLP and DePeiza holding some heat because of technical issues which derailed her appearance on Twitter a short while ago. This was an opportunity setup to interact with a youth segment.

  14. Every one of the centenarians are “medical illiterates” as we are so often castigated on this blog. Some are likely also illiterate illiterates.

  15. “3360 people”

say all of them would have voted for DLP in 30 seats which is about ±100 per seat

  16. @TLSN January 15, 2022 4:54 PM “If Epstein, Maxwell, and his ex- Royal Highness Prince Andrew had committed their alleged misdemeanours on Barbados soil no one would have batted an eyelid.”

And if they had committed them in your beloved UK would any of you have batted an eyelid??

And if my grandmother had balls, she would have been my grandfather, but she didn’t have balls and has never been my grandfather.

  17. The truth is that wealthy and powerful men are rarely charged with sexual assault and or rape.
Can anybody tell me when in the last 100 years the son of a wealthy and powerful head of state was charged with sexual assault/rape? And if so please state was such a son convicted, was such a son imprisoned?

The truth is in all countries of the world wealthy and powerful men can commit rape/sexual assault with impunity, and this is even more so if the victim is young and poor.

    Tell me if I lie.

i would listen to a CENTENARIAN WHO NEVER WENT TO SCHOOL any day over the jackassses with degrees from colonial degree mills….who have no commonsense, no conscience, ethics, respect or morals and believe themselves geniuses with NOT ONE IOTA OF PROOF..

for the unschooled centenarian to even REACH THAT AGE…they would have to BLESSED with a FULLY DEVELOPED and HEIGHTENED understanding of LIFE itself…THAT SUPERCEDES anything the degreed IDIOTS in parliament and in the toxic Slave society can come up with.. with their overly colonized, brain damaged selves….

who did you think i got the shark oil, whale oil and other lifesaving info from..

What ! are u so.politically blind to interpret Moe’s comments as ” views”
Do u not see that what u are calling views are Moe’s up and close assessment of Mottley character spanning over 50 years starting as childhood friendships
Bro are u still drinking the Kool aid after three years
What de hell is wrong with u ?

  22. Out of elections and into predictions ..

I must be psychic. I have voting statistics and conversation

Voter turnout – 20%of eligible voters

Smallest margin of victory: 1 (losing candidate was overheard to say ” I was so busy, I did not vote)

No of voters with covid: 300 (all in one constituency). One candidate who was down by 50 votes called an isolation center and was heard to say “Let my people go. We shall overcome”. He overcame.

Biggest surprise: Mia lost her seat. When it became clear that she was losing she said ‘The ECB screwed my chances’.

Most bizarre report: one known dead person voted. Police report says “his wife recognized the decease and fled the polling station”

Most common statement the day after ‘If I knew so many people would not vote, I would have voted’.

@AC, you can be very annoying often.

As I have said here before I would consider myself as tending or trending DLP as a younger man just as I would consider myself Democrat or Labour in a US and UK model … but I can step back and call a spade black too!

@Observing is 100% accurate …. we don’t need Moe’s VIEWS or her 50 years friendship to KNOW about Mia Amor Mottley … steeupse.

The woman has been in the public eye from the time she was a child and has displayed her talents since she was a teenager at QC and then her vindictive, unscrupulous personality quite visibly since she was first a minister of govt.

But please let’s get real … I have close friends who sat in class with her twin persona … YOUR leader Thompson and who said the same damn things about him… Steeupse … he still got elected as PM!

MAM is a danger and has always been that … your BS solves nothing as you simply want one of YOUR own there. Get outta our faces do!

Most of us want NEITHER of the two … but realistically that’s the type persona we acclaim in Bim … so we need to get some damn strong CONTROLS to keep her (and every other leader) in check.

Will you work hard on that whwn YOU get back in power… I think not.

    Hypocrite!

  27. Cuhdear Bajan,

It is only recently that a few powerful men have been held accountable in the white man’s superior civilisations where these Barbados Pummelers reside most conflictingly.

Barbados is very little different from the rest of the world. The world is not fair, has never been fair and will never be fair. It is a constant struggle. But struggle we must!

They like to pretend that they are much better off where they are in ALL respects.

But they can cuss me all they like, I will continue to say it.

    IN GENERAL….

….the poor people in all the countries of the world are all unhappy with their countries. The rich people are happy with their countries. Those in the middle are sometimes happy and sometimes unhappy with their countries.

The rest of your Sunday morning outburst aside…..
the systematic refusal to adhere to any of the controls (accountability checks) has continued.
The production of reports for the Caves, was proof positive, they CAN. If they wish to.
The PAC is now a full blown pappy show, on the few sporadic occasions it occurs.
You KNOW the oft hated IMF has INSISTED on certain reporting, it is available, but NOT placed in the public realm.
I deeply fear the social consequences of concealing so much, for so long.

The problem here is that some do not realise that others have deep ideology and philosophical positions , that have nothing to do with parties/political leaders.
Occasionally, I have supported policies of both the BLPDLP but I have no time for their useless back and forth. Apparently they expect others to pick a side. When you don’t do that they become highly offended.
I have never asked anybody to abandon the party of their choice and if I choose not to embrace the Duopoly that’s my choice.
That’s why I usually dismiss their back and forth sparring as just friends having fun. Siblings fighting. Friendly fire.
At this stage my personal ideology and philosophy cannot embrace the Duopoly.
Simple as that. I accept and respect their positions .
Perhaps they will digest what you said above.
    Peace
