The following is posted to support our striking nurses who have been treated unfairly by their employer (government) for too many years. Thanks to Tee White for the poster.

I can’t see the sense or honesty in blaming Caswell.
All I’m saying is this is pure BS and we need to make all matters right with the nurses
    @ David
We can fix everything else . Time to fix and pay the nurses.
Excuses whether they are political or “ systematic or systemic , are now becoming old .
I would have thought that in the midst of a pandemic nurses and other frontline workers would have been given priority.
All of a sudden we’re now hearing who worked and did not get paid ; that the problems goes back to 1633…………….
We know all that . Makes no difference to the exploited nurses.
It would have been very interesting if the Bees who finding excuses now were in opposition and equally interesting if the Dees who on the nurses side now were in government.
But history shows both screwed up the nurses. So for me , I don’t want to hear them from either side.
Never will be impressed with pot calling kettle black.
I know objectivity and neither Bees nor Dees have any left.
Same BS arguments would have surfaced Vice versa if the other side had called an election and disenfranchised thousands.
    Garbage in garbage out.
Fire go bun both ah dem.

  7. David January 14, 2022 10:49 AM #: “So too the police and other government agencies.”

    @ David

Seems as though the so called ‘freedom fighters’ are of the opinion if BU’s handful of contributors do not comment exhaustively on the nurses’ plight in the manner prescribed by them, means they are finding excuses for the ‘duopoly.’

That the issue should be discussed in a manner prescribed by them, perhaps ‘singing in unison’ about who is ‘covering for political masters,’ will IMMEDIATELY accomplish an objective the Caswell Franklyn led strike over the past few weeks has so far been unable to achieve.

BU is a discussion forum and people have a fundamental right to share their experiences to explain certain situations. I mentioned about experiences with not being paid to indicate I understand ‘how those nurses feel’ and the problem was ‘going on for too long.’

I agree the time has come to rectify the problem and that the current BLP administration has been unsympathetic and unreasonable in addressing it.
HOW it should be rectified and ‘the need for better working conditions, health insurance, continuous training, increased pay and remuneration for degrees,’ are not confined to nurses alone, but to the entire public sector………. are issues noticeably absent from the discussion.

As it relates to ‘increased pay,’ for example, recall in October 2011, among the IMF’s recommendations for an immediate decrease in government expenditure, was a proposal for the former Freundel Stuart led administration to ‘freeze’ government salaries and wages for two years because of the dire state of the economy at that time, which was outlined in a statement released by the Fund and the end of the October 3-14, 2011, Article IV discussions.
There is usually a bargaining process, (of which I’m sure Mr. Franklyn is aware), between the Public Service Ministry and the unions, relative to the revision and increase of Public Sector salaries and wages.
On Monday, June 11, 2018, PM Mottley disclosed in Parliament that, ‘an agreement was reached between the Ministry of the Civil Service and the Public Service Unions of Barbados of 5% across the board, which was applicable for the period April 1, 2018, to March 31, 2019.’

I ‘said all that to say this.’ Since the bargaining process encompasses the entire Public Sector, does the possibility exists that would be prepared to negotiate an increase in salaries for nurses ONLY?

Coming to BU dropping snide remarks to people who do not follow the same ‘recommended tired, narrative’ for every issue, will obviously not make any difference to the exploited nurses either.

It would be interesting to know, how many of them contributed to the striking nurses’ fund; lobbied international labour or health care workers organisations on their behalf; or, come Monday, January 17, will join them on their solidarity march?

  8. @Artax

The art of having a good debate is lost with some in the forum. They see something wrong and immediately see red. Then they ascribe labels to those who disagree as if we do not want to see solutions also. It is an immature approach to debate.

  9. Should be:

*******Seems as though the so called ‘freedom fighters’ are of the opinion if BU’s handful of contributors do not comment exhaustively on the nurses’ plight, means they are finding excuses for the ‘duopoly.’

  10. Artax,

I agree. We must try to address the specifics of the situation. We cannot rush in like a bull in a china shop.

And yes, the main grievance of irregular salary is with “temporary’” workers who need payment re-authorization at intervals. This was told to me by a retired civil servant who worked in that capacity. The attitude of many of her co-workers was indifference to their plight. I guess you have now provided the reason – they suffered it and so everybody else should as well.

As I have said before, I doubt very much that the nurses expect all their issues to be resolved immediately. They have probably put them out there because to leave them off the list would make them seem non-existent.

Mia could simply have committed to solving the irregular pay issue ACROSS THE BOARD

To ignore this glaring injustice in an obvious power play is unconscionable.

It displays an attitude that I cannot vote for.

  11. Artax

    Xcccccc
What an insulting piece of tripe or as Mia would say “a red herring”
Not every one might have the finances to contribute
However those having a voice is helping in every way to get the messages out on behalf of the nurses and such voices are important contributions in fighting the problem
Never cease to amaze how the blp footsoldiers can use insulting language to drown out the message and attack the messenger

  12. William Skinner Avatar

    @ David
You are quite within your right to determine what you consider proper debate. The simple truth is that pretending to be objective while subtlety defending the wrongs being committed is nothing more than sophistry.
The reason that some of us find it impossible to just state that an injustice is wrong and move on to problem solving , is that it provides cover for either the BLP or DLP. When others ignore or refuse to accept their diatribe , they then get into all kinds of cold soup and what I call “pot calling kettle back and forth,” which any alert person dismisses as pure BLPDLP nonsense.
BTW, you have the exclusive power to direct how debate goes on this blog.
I stand firm on my position : the blasted nurses issue has not been solved to date because it is a senseless political power play. The last I heard from Mr. Franklyn, which he said he learnt via a WhatsUp, ,from the Minister of Health , was that the Prime Minister moved the goal post a few hours before a very hopeful meeting to. resolve the issue was to occur.
Now you and all the rest who are trying to confuse the issue can answer this: What the hell that has to do with what happened to others being not paid in 1633 or at any other time ?
The nurses are on the frontline fighting a pandemic and we are here dissecting technocratic BS.
I have not heard the Prime Minister deny that she moved the goal post thereby effectively making any settlement possible at that time.
    Simple as that.
    Peace

  13. William Skinner Avatar

Should read : thereby making any settlement impossible at that time.

  14. I’ve mentioned in this forum on several occasions that I’m not a fan of Mia Mottley and her autocratic leadership style.

And, I also ‘said’ I believe she will be a ‘one term Prime Minister’ if she holds elections after going her full term, similar to Allen Chastenet of St. Lucia……. or calls an early election, as former Bahamas PM Hubert Minnis did….. and lost.

But, I’m not going to jump on the ‘bandwagon’ of those persons who persistently CRITICIZE EVERYTHING Mottley does or says.
Nor am I prepared to join them in the ‘realm of absurdity,’ to ‘talk’ shiite about what she wears, what background she uses for a photograph……. or her ‘hands waving, eyes staring and fist pumping.’

The hypocrisy on BU is simply amazing. We were asked to ignore a particular contributor’s arrogant, condescending behaviour and his personal abuse, to ‘say’ he’s ‘brilliant.’
Some people believe we should look past how another ‘BU regular’ purposely misrepresents the truth, simply because the commonality that brings she and them together, are certain issues they like to discuss, while encouraging her to ‘keep up the fight.’
Or, reward a George Street yardfowl whose political messages are always ‘out of touch with reality,’ with poems and ‘you go girl,’ while criticizing the yardfowls from Roebuck Street.

Yet, they want us to IGNORE any thing positive about Mottley….. to focus MAINLY on the negative.

It’s obvious the majority of BU’s contributors are DLP supporters. I’ve also realized those who claim to ‘anti duopoly,’ always provide the forum with examples that criticize Roebuck Street and “subtlety” favour George Street, clearly indicating they’re ‘disgruntled DEMS.’

You own this blog. Name any instant where William Skinner has tried to differentiate between the political behaviour of the DLP and BLP.
Name any instant where William Skinner has been obsessively critical of Mia Mottley. You just would not find it.
There is a clear definition of the word objectivity and it will never be found within the back and forth of those who support the BLP or DLP.
Apparently , the only people on this blog who are balanced are those who openly support either the BLP or DLP. Anybody who does not buy into their nonsense is called or branded to appease their insatiable appetite to get others to support their party be it B or D.
That’s why I use the term apologists because, I honestly cannot side in pot calling kettle black diatribe.
I have been on this blog long enough and I can pull up several articles that can easily expose what was written in the past and those who favored either the Bees or Dees in every given situation. But that will be a waste of time because they are doing the exact thing today.
We are here putting forth opinions about the plight of nurses and all kinds of irrelevant tissue is being put into play.
In the meantime there is extreme pressure on the health facilities and the most important sector of the country is already in crisis while the Duopoly is out there trying to win a contest.
And that’s the issue that concerns most level headed citizens at this time .
I did not know, and I have to blame my teachers for this, that balance and objectivity means agreeing with anybody.
I can respect other’s views without agreeing with them.
In the meantime the disgruntled and disappointed Bees and Dees can continue with their enlightening and educational contributions to BU and elsewhere. We are all in debt to them for teaching us so many things we did not know.
Let’s hope that after the sham is over that the nurses issue can be resolved. At this time , it’s the most pressing issue , as far as this citizen is concerned.
    Peace

The Mahogany Coconut Group (MCG), joins with all Barbadians in wishing the newly elected Barbados Labour Party government, all the best as it takes over from the badly beaten Democratic Labour Party, whose ten years stay at the wicket, is best described as anemic and unsuccessful. The former prime minister, Mr. Freundel Stuart displayed not only poor leadership skills but bad manners by scarcely having any meaningful dialogue with the public. He chose mainly to address constituency branches of his party.
The public therefore gave Stuart and his miserable group the severe beating it deserved by giving the then opposition Barbados Labour Party under the leadership of Ms. Mia Mottley, all thirty parliamentary seats. The Democratic Labour Party will have to find a way to make itself once again relevant to the political process.
We also congratulate, Ms. Mia Mottley on becoming the first female prime minister of Barbados. We know Ms. Mottley is a seasoned politician. She has gone through the hottest fires and has emerged as one made of the finest steel; we will now await her performance as a leader
The MCG having closely followed the election of May 24th, 2018, must sadly conclude, that both parties have determined that the real cure of the country’s economic ailments are to be found in the IMF’s medicine. Hence as expected the country will be heading straight to the International Monetary Fund, for some very bitter medicine. Fifty years after Independence, and with literally thousands of University of the West Indies (UWI) graduates occupying our Caribbean landscape, we still cannot get our economies functioning at any progressive level.
Barbados, to all intents and purposes, is a one sector economy, depending almost exclusively on the tourism industry to keep its growth in any proper shape. Over the last ten years the government of the Democratic Labour Party failed to devise any sustainable economic policy.
Ms. Mottley has been given a warm welcome by all the major players, including the Social Partnership, which includes trade unions, business organizations and other interest groups. While we wish the new Barbados government all the best, we fear that once the IMF gets its predatory claws into the affairs of the country, escape may prove difficult, if not impossible.
Ms. Mottley has already delivered a mini-budget, which was nothing more than an instrument to raise taxes and deliver some promises made by her party during the elections. These included reinstating payment for university education and an increase to old age pensioners.
However, citizens are waiting to see what kind of restructuring program the country will enter under the IMF. Any underperformance of the tourism industry will be disastrous to the island’s economy. The great irony of Ms. Mottley’s mini budget, is the fact that it attempts to extract money from the very tourists, who it is inviting to assist with the country’s current predicament.
We can only hope that she does not kill the goose that lays the golden egg.

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

That’s a rather unusual poor performance coming from the management of the Bajan Public Service which normally prides itself as the best in the Caribbean and punching above its weight globally.

Is the word ‘Timely’ no longer part of the Management speak and Corporate jargon in the public service especially when it comes to remunerating its hard-working employees?

But a more pertinent concern is whether that bevy of consultants and hangers-on (hired to replicate, in the most costly of manner, what is already employed in the Public Service) also have to suffer similar delay and frustration before receiving their ‘monthly cut’ of the fatted calf.

We have never heard the likes of Clydie or Avinash having to raise their voices about any long delay in being handsomely rewarded for talking bullshit.

BTW, blogmaster, do you know if the compensation packages- arranged by the current administration to settle the Court-rejected grievances of some senior officers’ failure to earn promotion in the former RBPF-will be made in the same ‘junk-bonds’ currency as in the case of those financially beleaguered citizens with their long overdue claims arising from the compulsory acquisition of their Constitution-enshrined properties?

  24. Artax,

    Your patience knows no bounds!

I am tired of fighting that old narrative. Between the BU Busers who think I am a slave and the Pompous Politicians who forget that they are our servants there is often little difference in attitude.

On this very blog one of the staunchest supporters of the BLP, posted that he had “found respect” for me , when I posted at the very beginning of COVID, that I will not be critical of the administration’s COVID policy because I knew that it will be a tremendous challenge for the government and our limited resources.

Since when are government advisers and ordinary civil servants or employees of the administration to be equated? Our government advisers are personally sworn to our Supreme Leader. They are above the system and the law.

Loyalty and absolute allegiance to leader and party are decisive, not any professional aptitude.

  29. This may explain why she called an early election.

  30. @ WURA
Yes it is our blog. We do not attempt to “ pull down” any Caribbean government but see the region as one entity. We also do not highlight any one leader or publish pure party BS.
What is most disgraceful in this current discussion is that there are some who believe they have the ability to steer the discussion in their favor.
I am absolutely baffled that an impasse between the most critical workers , we are in a pandemic, and a government/ trade union impasse has been allowed to deteriorate into such stupidity.
What is even more baffling is that we are being given useless tutorials about well known facts as to how the public service is supposed to operate , as if we are little children sitting in some classroom.
All I said from the very beginning is that Caswell “ is not beyond” repute but the issue could have been resolved and must be resolved in the interest of the health of the country.
Apparently from the moment I said that the PM apparently moved the goal post at a critical time when a settlement seemed possible the knives were drawn.
Intellectual dishonesty is not my forte.
I sat and I heard over the radio. Caswell saying that a settlement seemed very possible after an intermediary was utilized. He went as far to say that if he ( Franklyn ) worked “ quickly “ a settlement was likely by the end of that week.
Apparently, there was to be a meeting the very next morning to tidy up the deal. Lo and behold , according to Franklyn, he received. a Whats up from Bostic , saying that the PM informed the meeting previously agreed to would only proceed if the nurses returned to work. That led to a collapse of the talks that seemed so positive less than twenty four hours previously.
Now, can any reasonable person tell me what the hell the frigging public service orders have to do with that. Tell me what the frig if I once had to wait on my salary as a public servant back in 1633 had to do with that.
Garbage in garbage out. All of them who hit on this blog for years propping up the BLPDLP are not so blasted disappointed that they political world is falling apart that they want y to draw in those who refused to worship at Roebuck and George Streets.
They are all now disgruntled, disappointed and embarrassed that they will try to destroy anybody in their path,

Two weeks ago, Gambian President Yahya Jammeh stunned observers when he conceded to his opponent in the country’s presidential elections. For someone who has promised to rule for a billion years, his decision to walk away peacefully was a remarkably positive turn for the country.

And then Jammeh reversed course again, saying the election results had been discredited.

His exact reasoning is murky, but one credible suggestion is that the country’s newly elected leaders had started talking about prosecuting him.

Nothing clarifies the mind like the idea of a prison cell.”
