The measure of a caring society will always be how it takes care of the most vulnerable. The news some elderly persons are being denied access to being vaccinated against Covid 19 by relatives is cruel. The Covid Dashboard for all countries confirm senior citizens have been affected more than any other group.

The other concern with deep implications for Barbados society is the inability of government to get children back to face to face learning. It is one thing to see key players in the education sector grip and grinning in the media receiving electronic devices to be distributed to children to support online learning, it is another to observe children on the streets during school time. A chat with any teacher about the challenges of online learning an a few become emotional. There is no need to list the challenges in detail, the education directorate and stakeholders are aware. We need to fix it!

Before the pandemic there were legitimate concerns about the quality and relevance of our education program and indiscipline among our youth. We make a lot of noise about the so called lost decade. Soon we may be discussing the lost generation.

A word to an educated country should be enough.

Attached are the charts for the week ending 19th November.  I reduced the intervals on the time axis of the daily incidence graph to more clearly show the clear current decrease in the 7-day trendline.  The decreases are quite gradual suggesting that control is not likely to be as precipitous as say in the recent Grenada spike.  Positivity is also slowly decreasing but we are still far from the 5%.     These things happen when man believes he can outsmart nature.

    If they had not tried to lie and cheat their way through the science to maintain their doctor knows-it-all egos, research funding and pharmaceutical profits, COVID would have been done with in the normal 1-2 year time frame like it is in Sweden who took the traditional approach

    We are due some rain in the next 2 to 3 weeks.

    November average is normally between 7 and 8 inches.

    So far we have had about 96 parts for the month and if rainfall patterns persist we are due several inches in a rather short time.

    Could be we will see a downpour shortly.

    We fell below the 200 case level for new COVID cases today which is good but we could see a reversal for Christmas or the New Year.

    Ah boy, relax and trust in God, what is to be will be.

    Had 67 parts today. I hear the West Coast flooded yesterday.

    Atlantic looking angry and weather forecast saying be aware of excess rainfall to come.

    For me , the biggest concern is the area around the desal plant.

    The powers that be should have that locked off and locked down from ever since.

    The story in Sweden appears to be a mixed one and not the outright victory you are claiming. Even the Swedes aren’t certain of what is happening…

    But Tegnell himself is unapologetic. He stressed that “Sweden did close down enormously” despite the lack of a formal lockdown. It had empty streets for much of 2020 and almost no cases of flu and other respiratory diseases as people worked from home and avoided travel and social contact, he said.

    While his employer, Sweden’s public health agency, and others were still evaluating the commission’s reports, he said there was still little agreement on what worked against Covid-19 apart from vaccinations.

    “What they’re not talking about is what kinds of things did make a difference. That’s what we’re still struggling to understand. Some measures work sometimes in some places, but it’s very difficult to see a clear pattern,” he added

    All four Botswana Nu variant patients were fully vaccinated The “Nu” variant of COVID arrived just in time to ruin Christmas. (Who didn’t see this coming?) The variant with “more mutations than you shake a spike protein at” was first identified in Botswana and quickly became the most prevalent variant in South Africa. But before you succumb to “pandemic of the unvaccinated” nonsense, consider this:

    From the President of Botswana, where the variant was first discovered: The preliminary report revealed all four [patients] had been previously vaccinated for COVID-19.

    Here’s the text of the letter:

    ‘The Presidential COVID-19 Task Force informs the public that four (4) cases of a new COVID-19 variant now known as B.1.1.529, were reported and recorded on Monday 22nd November 2021.

    The four (4) cases were detected among travellers who tested SARS-COV-2 positive on routine pre travel testing. The variant tests were carried out as part of the routine genomic surveillance of SARS-COV-2 as prescribed in our COVID-19 response plan.

    The preliminary report revealed that all the four had been fully vaccinated for COVID-19. As part of the continuing investigations into the virus to establish and contain its local transmissions, contact tracing has revealed close contacts who are currently awaiting their results and the public will be informed regarding the outcome of the exercise.

    The initial investigations on the virus have established that the new variant has a high number of mutations as compared to the locally predominant Delta variant. What this means is still unclear and under investigation. New variants have the potential to aftect severity of disease, how effective tests pick up the disease as well as potentially vaccine etticacy. At this moment, real world impact of the variant has not been established. Non-pharmaceutical interventions wearing of masks, social distancing, and avoiding unnecessary travels etc remain effective and therefore the public is advised to continue observing these.

    The Presidential COVID-19 Task Force wishes to further dispel assertions made by some circulating social media reports associating these cases with HIV+ status of the participants.

    Contrary to these reports, in which one newspaper claims that one case was from an HIV+ participant, is totally false as no HIV status of the clients was associated with these results. These media reports are unfortunate and factually flawed and should be viewed as such. The variant is still being studied and investigated and therefore, it would be premature to conclusively make these tvpes of assertions at this time.

    The public is urged to take necessary precautions to protect themselves from COVID-19 as advised from time to time.

    It is also being reported that this variant is not receptive to ‘vaccinations’ at this time.

    From what the media is saying, this sounds like the perfect storm as far as a worst case scenario for a pandemic goes. Whether or not this is true, we do not know, nor will we know until the cards are played out.

    I would continue to take precautions as you normally would, try and stay as healthy as you can and pray for God’s mercy.

    The latest report indicates the aggressive mutation of the virus leading to Omicron is too early to say how strong the defense of vaccinated will be. Tests have to be conducted that will take weeks.
