The Barbados Underground household extends sympathy to the family of the late Dennis Johnson.

Some may recall Dennis was an active commenter to the blog in the period 2008 to 2015. Unfortunately he stopped because of the constant ad hominems and how anonymity was abused to distort by a few. Notwithstanding his position this blogmaster respected the man for what he stood for, his body of work will ensure his legacy endures for the ages.

Below are a few of his many comments posted to BU which are linked to the blog posting.

May he rest in peace.

Well, it happened with “Hot Hot Hot” and “Who Let The Dogs Out”…. artistes other than calypsonians recorded them and they broke into the US market. In fact, Arrow re-recorded “Hot Hot Hot” in a Country & Western style for line dancing! So, Rihanna doing a calypso, is not too far-fetched. BUT …. the question will be which one? Alison Hinds “Come up to my bamsee boy, and Aye, Aye, Aye?”

David: Programme Managers should handle music rotation, but, there must also be checks to ensure THEIR particular bias[es] do not overpower everything. Personally [and that means speaking as “me” and not as a Programme Manager] I would like to see a small committee of three manage rotations.
Asiba: Missed out on the Maths. Did not like the subject too much. But… Try these figures:
10 -12 songs per hour. Prime Time: [morning]
06:00 -09:00 a.m. and Prime Time [afternoon] 03:00 – 05:00 p.m. [or 04:00 -06:00 p.m] That’s five [5] hours. Monday to Friday – five [5] days. Let’s try to put it all together. 12 songs per hour for five hours = 60 songs. Multiply that by 5 days per week = 300 songs. YOU said: There were 600 songs released, and I agreed with you. So IF ALL were released together [and they were NOT….but, let’s assume they were] To play all 600 would take 2 weeks. Then … second rotation [of all] another 2 weeks,. How long is the “Crop Over Season”? six weeks???? Three rotations!!! I know my maths. is really poor, but how many more rotations would you get ? [Remember what you said: 40 or so songs in rotation in prime time!]…. just following your logic.

Crop Over Keeps Going

@Adrian: In a year when it is forecast there will be no peace and plenty, may I wish you – enough!
I agree with you and Gen. Lee on the issue of “willingness”. But that is the journalist who understands what is journalism and is committed to upholding the tenets of that noble profession. Sadly, there are many who see it as a means to an end. That “end” is sometimes no more than free passes to cocktailed receptions, upscale events and eventual reward with a post of “Corporate Communications Specialist”. Now, I am not knocking those who bear that title nobly; but as with every profession, there are pretenders, and there are dedicated practitioners.

Barbados Association of Journalist Resuscitated

I hesitated; started to write this; stopped; thought long and hard, then decided to go ahead. May I pose the following questions [to no one in particular]:
Who publishes or broadcasts news stories? Journalists?
If a journalist said to an Editor or publisher or Producer: “I have started an expose on Corruption in the Judiciary. I need two weeks to focus on this to complete it”. What do you think the response will be?
If and when such an expose was completed, how long do you think it would take before it was published? How many checks, and double checks. How many “screenings” by “legal advisors”, and questions about “sources”?
Journalists in Barbados are, at best, poorly trained, poorly paid and recognised more as public relations outlets than as sources of credible information.
Most of the comments contained in this thread supports my belief.

Barbados Association of Journalist Resuscitated

Sadly, I cannot promise any new “Julians” on the horizon. Broadcasters of the calibre of Julian Rogers, Desmond Bourne, [Dame] Olga Lopes-Seale, Vic Fernandes, Leo deLeon etc. seem to be in short supply at the moment. But, seemingly against all odds, a Barack Obama emerged on the US landscape, after years of a George Bush; so maybe – just maybe – we are in our “Bush” years , and some “Obama” years [or Julian Rogers years] will follow.
Quien sabe?

It is Beginning to look a lot like Christmas

I [somewhat reluctantly] must make this intervention on behalf of my station.
I constantly hear [and read] of concerns about defamation. What I seldom [if ever] hear about is reference to a small matter called a license.
That “small matter” can be revoked for broadcasting matter that offends public morals, stirs up disaffection against any section of the population, and a host of other infractions.
Does anyone recall the PM’s comment about Political Broadcasts and “some stations breaking the law”?
If the Broadcast Authority decides that comments made about Guyanese nationals in Barbados [select any of those printed on this blog by Negroman as an example] are representative of a breach of the broadcast license, and suspends the operations of Starcom Network Inc. [all four stations], please consider the financial loss [over the period it would take to obtain a review or re-instatement], and the effect on the future of call-in programmes on that [or any] network

Are Bloggers Journalists

At the risk of being hammered out of the park, may I offer another view. The OECS territories have a common currency and one Central Bank; BUT … there is no freedom of movement! CSME does NOT mean free entry for whosoever may! Nor does it mean freedom to come looking for jobs, wives and husbands, or hiding out and having children to get “status”. What is does mean is that RPB, Alison, Krsofyah, Dorsey Boyce, Merville Lynch, DJ Fuzz, Peter Coppin, Peter Ram, QSI Sounds, and a whole group of very talented Bajans could go to any Caribbean island and perform, set up stage, sound, lighting etc. and get paid for their various talents [in US dollars if they so desire] and continue to live in Bim, their homeland.

The problem is: other Caribbean islands took steps to secure their borders; made sure our artistes had work permits, visas, and whatever other immigration documentation they required BEFORE letting them into their countries.
WE let in all and sundry for all sorts of spurious reasons, and then started to bawl when the flood started to wash everything away. The fault is not CSME; and you are all wise enough to know where the fault lies. Be bold enough to put the blame where it belongs.

Time to ask Hard Questions about CSME

Attempts at Caribbean integration have always been [and I fear will always be] dogged by insularity.
When the Caricom Travellers Cheque was introduced as the currency to be used for travel within the region, in TT dollars, Jamaica did not recognise it. Guyana owed Barbados millions under the CMCF, and did not pay.
The OECS was once referred to as the “Organisation of Eugenia, Compton & Son” in the days when they sought shelter under the Regan umbrella.
Today, Comrade Ralph, his protege in Dominica and the Godfather from T&T are seeking to establish a new network to mirror the Eugenia, Compton, Tom and Son days. This time, they are hoping the finance will come from the oil barons of the region: Trinidad and Venezuela.
We have been sold to the highest bidder from the sweet days of slavery, and are still offering ourselves to the highest bidder today.
We like it so!…

Caricom Under Threat

Outside of editorials, newspapers do not comment; they report.
Across the region, newspapers that carry analysis and comments usually disassociate themselves from the commentary and analysis.
Media entities that do not depend on advertising revenue are usually government controlled and/or subsidised, or owned and controlled by some very wealthy, usually anonymous individuals.
Just some random thoughts generated by your comments.

[whisper] – Ah still employ by de same people – OCM. It is just that I am not afraid; of anything.

Points to Ponder

My fear is that we create these positions [This Ombudsman, That Authority, Auditor General, Czar, and so on] and then we either ignore their recommendations, or take “note” and no action. I am as concerned as you are, about threats to our practice of democracy. I am even more concerned that so few people seem to consider it so!

One of the few critical thinkers in the public space that was never afraid to say things as he saw them.

I wish he had gotten the chance to write his memoirs as that would be a must read. With him being a part of many of the pivotal points in Barbados and Caribbean history and well versed in Caribbean culture, it would have been an extremely informative and unique perspective from the life of an normal citizen but an extraordinary gentleman.

My Condolences to his family and friends

  5. RE Fact Johnson was fully vaccinated
Allegations the work environment had the Virus
    Fact he had Myasthenia Gravis
Fact after a week of absence from the job

    CAUSE OF MYASTHENIA GRAVIS
    Antibodies

Your nerves communicate with your muscles by releasing chemicals (neurotransmitters) that fit precisely into receptor sites on the muscle cells at the nerve-muscle junction.

In myasthenia gravis, your immune system produces antibodies that block or destroy many of your muscles’ receptor sites for a neurotransmitter called acetylcholine (as-uh-teel-KOH-leen). With fewer receptor sites available, your muscles receive fewer nerve signals, resulting in weakness.

Antibodies can also block the function of a protein called muscle-specific receptor tyrosine kinase (TIE-roh-seen KIE-nays), sometimes referred to as MuSK. This protein is involved in forming the nerve-muscle junction. Antibodies against this protein can lead to myasthenia gravis. Antibodies against another protein, called lipoprotein-related protein 4 (LRP4), can play a part in the development of this condition. Other antibodies have been reported in research studies and the number of antibodies involved will likely expand over time. Some people have myasthenia gravis that isn’t caused by antibodies blocking acetylcholine, MuSK or LRP4. This type of myasthenia gravis is called seronegative myasthenia gravis or antibody-negative myasthenia gravis. In general, researchers assume that these types of myasthenia gravis still have an autoimmune basis but the antibodies involved are just not detectable yet.

At the end of the day, it does not matter whether he was vaccinated or not. Every last man, woman and child in Barbados will catch COVID by the end of 2022.

However, now is not the time for such debate the merits of the science and decisions taken behind what might or might not have happened.

We have lost another great brain and fountains of unique knowledge possibly before he had a chance to pass on everything he wanted to pass on.

  9. For every death, especially in a time of Covid, there is an expectation for regret as Westernized christian acculturated societies posit.

In Ancient Afrikan philosophy we centre a different reaction.

This writer was not a particular “fan” of Johnson. We saw him as somehow always ready to kick the asses of poor and Black people while having no abiding critique of vested interests and elites forces.

It was and is a middle class sensibility central to Barbados, the Caribbean.

And since he held no perceptible Afrikan consciousness this writer is not well placed to appeal to the Ancestors to embrace him. These truths are our renderings.

  11. Broadcaster passes on
THE BROADCASTING FRATERNITY across Barbados felt a collective pain of grief after veteran journalist Dennis Johnson died on Tuesday night.
The affable Johnson, a Grenadian by birth, was last heard on air during last Thursday’s Down to Brasstacks
call-in programme on the Starcom Network, where he had been its senior producer.
Johnson, 64, who suffered from myasthenia gravis, a long-term illness which causes weakness of the muscles and affects the ability to speak or swallow at times, and who originally didn’t think he would have lived passed his 30s, died at home.
Scores of tributes poured in from across the Caribbean diaspora yesterday for the broadcaster considered a true Caribbean man and one who had an unmatched knowledge of Caribbean music, a deep passion for regional politics and a doting love for his children and extended family.
Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley, who is in Glasgow attending the COP26 Climate Summit, paid tribute to Johnson from Scotland.
“Dennis was a man of strong character; a man committed to intellectual and broadcasting honesty and excellence; one who was not afraid to challenge the establishment; to defend the proverbial “small man” – then without so much as batting the eyelid, let that same small man know he was wrong.
“He loved to talk, to discuss, to argue, to share his opinion, but always with the greatest of respect for those who engaged him,” she said.
“I have engaged Dennis on many occasions over the 30 years. He was unfailingly courteous and always fair. We did not speak often but when we did the conversations were deep, sincere and meaningful.
“While we all knew of his health challenges, he never hid behind them. Indeed, it reinforced in many of us his quiet courage,” added Mottley. “Barbados, in my view, will miss his voice and his message. To his family, we extend our condolences. May the passage of time ease the depth of your loss.”
In his career, Johnson worked at both the Caribbean Broadcasting Corporation and Starcom Network in a myriad of positions, but came to prominence after he was wooed to the station as a moderator, by former moderator David Ellis, now the country’s COVID-19 Public Advisor.
    Starcom Network’s
station manager Anthony Greene said yesterday he had only worked with Johnson for a little over two years, but in that short time had recognised his wit, intelligence and passion for his work.
“He also always had an entertaining story to tell,” Greene said as he hosted a period of reflection before the start of yesterday’s Down to Brasstacks
programme. Johnson was also responsible for the mentoring and training of new moderators on the call-in programme, inclusive of Corey Lane, Tricia Watson and most recently, Dr Kristina Hinds, and Sade Jemmott.
He was also supportive and protective of the disabled community in an effort to bring light to their needs.
    Acting Prime Minister
of Barbados Santia Bradshaw yesterday remembered Johnson as a leading light in the Caribbean’s broadcasting sector.
“For nearly three decades Dennis was an integral part of our broadcasting landscape. His opinions as a talk show host/commentator were always laced with passion and conviction, whether or not we agreed with him, and his delivery was never tainted by disrespect.
“Just as smoothly, Dennis could slide from the passion-boiling seat of the commentator to the DJ’s station where, in a moment, he could soothe those same emotions with a tender voice and just the right music. He was the consummate radio host,” Bradshaw said.
“He was a Caribbean man, born in Grenada, schooled in Trinidad and Tobago and nurtured in Barbados. He saw and espoused the virtue and benefits of Caribbean people recognising, appreciating and living their oneness.”
Minister of Home Affairs and Information Wilfred Abrahams, also paid tribute to the veteran media man.
“Dennis was passionate about his work, and this was evident,” the attorney at law said. “His contribution to broadcasting in Barbados is unquestioned. Dennis’ wide-ranging interests and knowledge on an array of topics made him a capable and well-loved call-in host. His role as a moderator on Down to Brasstacks endeared him to audiences in Barbados and abroad.”
Johnson, who was also described as a devout family man, is survived by his wife Joycelyn, daughters Shivonne, 42, and Mica, 29 and son Justin, 25.

Most regular people are tired of COVID and are getting on with their lifes. Only the medical practitioners and covid fanatics are focused on everything COVID as if that is the only thing killing or putting lives at risk on a daily basis.

The time for such a debate on possible reasons for his passing should be left until after his funeral for the general public. Reasons for his passing are solely for to his immediate family to pursue the reasons if they so desire. As we are not party to any of the goings on in his private life over the last few weeks of his life and should never assume what we are unable to support with evidence and not conjecture.

I never said he was more important. I said he was one of the great brains with unique knowledge because his unique life experiences gave him unique insight into many seemingly benign things we took for granted which he saw as a precursor to a larger problem in the near or distant future.

  13. At the end of the day those who have been vaccinated and died as result wil exposed the sordid details of those who are in home isolation and are being given insufficient medical information by those medical professionals on the hot lines
    For what it is worth

I HAVE NEVER SOUGHT TO WIN FRIENDS OR INFLUENCE ANYONE ANYWHERE THEREBY

IN CHURCH IT IS VERY HARD WITH FOUR DEGREES IN THEOLOGY ONE HAS TO KEEP QUIET AND SAY AS LITTLE AS POSSIBLE, AS THEN FOLK THINK THAT YOU THINK THAT YOU KNOW EVERY THING—–WHICH OF COURSE YOU DO—-AT LEAST MUCH MORE THAN THOSE AROUND, WHO HAVE ALLEGEDLY GONE TO BIBLE SCHOOL. THIS PARTICULARLY SO ON ZOOM MEETINGS FROM BACK HOME, IN PLACES WHO DID NOT HAVE THE BASIC FOUNDATION I HAD AT A CERTAIN BAPTIST CHURCH IN THE EARLY 70’S

IN THE CLASSRROOM IT WAS NOT AS HARD EVEN THOUGH THE STUDENTS GOOGLE ALL DAY TO FACT CHECK YOU, BUT ONCE YOU ARE PROPERLY PREPARED YOU HAVE THEM COVERED ALWAYS. IF ITS OLD…I GOT THEM COLD AND IF ITS NEW……THEY ARE USUALLY CONFUSED. LOL

ON BU HAVING BEEN SUBJECTED TO CHALLENGES BY ILLITERATES IN MY AREAS I TURNED TO MOCKING THOSE WHO TRY JUST FOR THE PLEASURE, AND SO I NO LONGER BRING OUT MY LOVELY PPTS, WHETHER MY OWN OR THE VERY
