The Covid 19 pandemic rages largely because of the highly infectious delta variant and it has raised questions about the quality of decision making by the public health establishment. 

In Barbados recommendations from the Barbados Association of Medical Practitioners (BAMP) continue to be at odds with public health directives. Acting Chief Medical Officer Dr. Anton Best was obliged to support government’s recent decision to amend the travel protocol to allow fully vaccinated visitors with a valid PCR test to skip a second test and to observe quarantine. Bear in mind the ease in the entry requirement comes at a time the Covid 19 infection curve has not plateaued. 

The other question being asked is the reluctance of the medical fraternity in Barbados, both, public and private to deviate from the ‘script’ by prescribing off-label drugs like Ivermectin and Hydroxychloroquine. Although the establishment has not authorized these drugs to treat Covid 19, several favourable reports have been reported by some medical practitioners. We know the several Covid 19 vaccines are certified to prevent serious illness and death BUT …

Has the time come for Barbados health officials both public and private to agree to expand therapeutic options to treat Barbadians in the prevailing environment, approved by the FDA be damned?

Enclosed are the charts for the week ending 29th October. The charts seem to be suggesting a plateauing of sorts around the mid 300s +ve cases per day, while anecdotal info suggest that this might be an underestimate.  Deaths have been staggering.  We are now at a total of 151 deaths.  Uptake of the vaccines are still trending upwards.  Source: Lyall Small

    How can you extrapolate from a COVID metric in Ontario to a prediction of the depth of Barbados Doo Doo. I missed a link in the logic. Help us out here.

    I guess the missing link is knowing Barbados’ positivity rate. The 7 day average is 16% or just using yesterday’s numbers 20% (260 cases to 1293 tests)

    Ontario’s positivity rate would be 2.1% (19,840 tests to 422 new cases ). Hence Barbados has a 8 times higher positivity rate but a population 50 times smaller than Ontario. Hence the deep doo doo “assessment”

    Look at the Characteristic Curve for Japan, remove the surges due to flooding and waterborne transmission, and you will see why.

    2021 has just been a bad year for flooding all over the world, La Nina.

    COVID would not have been the terror it has been and is had it happened in a period of drought where it could not spread.

    A couple of years ago it would just have been another interesting virus and the experts would be warning us it was a precursor to a pandemic.

    John Knox’s interpretation is that Japan has a good public water supply which can be breached by extreme flooding but which will return to normal quickly and prevent the spread of COVID.

    Authorities in Japan had to evacuate 5 million people in August.

    That it has recovered so rapidly is testament to the resilience of its water supply and the technical personnel.

    I would say engineers but I know peeps on here are very fragile and they will think I am blowing my horn as an engineer.

    I appreciate a soundly designed system.

    Acts of God happen and all we can do is pick up the pieces and continue.

    Now lets look at Barbados and New Zealand.

    Both recently had floods, but on different scales.

    Both are in the situation where COVID cases are rising.

    New Zealand is far better controlled as is evident in the difference in the vertical scales.

    Both will plateau and return to “normal”.and in the absence of more floods, the experts will continue to be baffled.

    New Zealand should do it quicker because it seems its rate of growth of cases is smaller than here.

    The New Zealand population is far fitter than the one in Barbados so Barbados will unfortunately suffer many more deaths than New Zealand.

    I wonder if we are comparing Apples and Mangoes. I accept your figures and your math that indicates that Barbados may be in deep doo, but, are we sure that the process and populations are comparable? I’m not sure how the Ontario Labs choose the persons to be tested and the randomness of their sampling, but, is it possible that Ontario, with its vast resources, might be using a testing protocol where their tests might be more or less representative of the target population (Ontario) per se while Barbados might only be sampling persons who were direct or indirect contacts of persons proven to have contracted the disease. e.g, does the Barbados data capture and include the people who get tested outside of the official labs using non-PCR tests? Are persons tested outside of those who present with symptoms of Covid-19? Are the contact tracers now back to a manageable situation with the Delta variant? …………..

    @lyall i was really filling in the “missing link” as to why Hants assessed that we are in deep doo doo. Not that I support the comparison between Ontario and Barbados but I agree with the deep doo doo conclusion using other shall we say metrics

    Dr Clyde Cave recently assessed that we may be dealing with a higher rate of spread than the daily numbers suggest. I have to agree as

    1) Barbados now has the 3rd highest increase in cases per million IN THE WORLD. This stat tries compare he rate of spread among countries. It will skew towards countries with smaller populations. Dominica is the only other island in the top 20. All the rest are smaller European countries

    2) Barbados has one of the highest population densities in the world (15th highest), even higher along the south and west coast (St. James, St Michael, Christ Church, St Philip. So even if we had the same positively rate of Ontario we would have the comparatively worse problem.

    Added to the above, the dropping rate of vaccinations and my (pretty safe) assumption that the daily detected cases are only part of total actual cases. These are not a good mix when dealing with a highly contagious virus so can also (safely state that Barbados is in deep, DEEP, elephant sized doo doo….. lol.

    The situation will also further support my case for a universal (min single dose) proof of vaccination OR recent negative test mandate. I think it the loosest mandate for risk mitigation with an absolute vaccine mandate in the usual sectors.

    After all, the Kiwis don’t consume the tons of old dog meat which Bajans call ‘imported’ lamb instead of the much healthier meat of their own black belly sheep.

    We support you in your call to the Bajan authorities to improve significantly the management of the country’s water especially in the disposal of the liquid waste laced with dangerous chemicals.

    Unless the dumping of the liquid waste off the country’s shores is stopped in the very near future the damage done will be irreparable with serious implications for the sustenance of both marine and land life.

    If the Corona Virus had been released a couple of years earlier, it would not have had the benefit of worldwide floods to assist its spread.

    Pandemic modelling is an inexact science. It is far behind the less inexact science of meterological modelling which has improved by leaps and bounds over the last few decades. As such there are numerous factors that influence the onset and development of epidemics. No existing model can delineate the myriad characteristics and dependencies of an outbreak at the present time. I suspect John’s simplistic tale of water having an overweening determining effect on Covid-19 dynamics is far from correct.

    Pick a country, let’s say Brazil and look at the repeated surges and their correlation to floods.

    No recent floods and things returning to normal gradually.

    Try Iran.

    Look at various states in the US.

    You will observe the empirical evidence of the link between water and the virus.

    … and of course, Japan!!

    Grenada is good to look at as is Dominica.

    Our rise in cases is not because people are not wearing their masks right, or not social distancing or not hand sanitizing.

    These don’t explain the observations.

    Our problems are water related and caused by one or maybe two of the many sources of water we have.

    80% of our water is good.

    If you are lucky enough not to live in an area in the distribution zone fed from the one or two sources you won’t have neighbours with COVID.

    Go and take a look see.

    Ask around your friends and plot the few cases you and they know of on a map.

    You will find they are mostly in the elevations below 140 feet, just where the MOH said they were.

    The obvious fix is to track down the source, shut it off and disinfect any reservoirs it supplies.

    I got my first two households at the 220 foot level a couple of days ago but suspect they got it the airborne way.

    Also, the CDC has confirmed that these vaccines do not prevent the transmission of the virus. What’s the point of enforcing vaccines if it does not keep you away from the Covid virus? Oh Biden, Wake up!Dr. Yeadon said in a statement previously, “You’re being lied to, I’m being lied to, the authorities are not giving us full information about the risks of these products.”

    “We never, ever, give experimental medicines to pregnant women. Why do we not do that?…simply we have been exposed to a new product for morning sickness called thalidomide and it led to at least 10,000 birth malformations.” Dr. Yeadon added.

    Studies that were conducted on the morning sickness drug before releasing it were not capable of identifying “thalidomide as a toxin in the womb,” he said, adding that the tragedy taught scientists that “babies are not safe and protected inside the uterus, which is what we used to think. But they’re a miracle of minute development. Critical stages, especially in the early stages, where it interfered with biochemicals or something else, can change the course of development of that child irreparably.”

    “You never give inadequately tested medicines, medicinal products, to a pregnant woman,” Yeadon emphasized. “And that is exactly what is happening. Our government is urging pregnant women, and women of childbearing age, to get vaccinated. And they’re telling them they’re safe. And that’s a lie because those studies have simply not been done.”

    “Reproductive toxicology has not been undertaken with any of these products, certainly not a full battery of tests that you would want,” he added.

    “So, here we are. There’s been potentially hundreds of millions of women of child-bearing potential [injected] with products which are untested in terms of impacts on fertilization and development of the baby,” Yeadon continued.

    “That’s bad enough because what that tells me is that there’s recklessness. No one cares. The authorities do not care what happens,” the former Pfizer VP said.

    I knew a person doing water testing in the 1990’s at the time the desal plant came into operation so I presume it is still proceeding.

    The numbers were to have been made public but never were.

    Shutting down beaches is a touchy subject.

    It is only when the sewage system failed with its visual evidence on the South Coast that beaches were actually shut down.

    When I started looking at water quality I quickly realised that the testing is only for certain contaminants.

    Not possible to test for all.

    I don’t recall there being any testing for viruses and this is a new one but that was a long time ago.

    I’ve made the suggestion to relevant persons and in writing because it is evident to me that water is involved in the spread of this virus.

    I would imagine if they can test humans for the virus they should be able to test water, potable and sea.

    For me personally, I stopped going in the sea anywhere in Barbados decades ago and I am not going near any water in the Southern Corridor for some time to come.

    Cases are now down to 3.

    Still have 127 active cases but they are resolving.

    Soon Grenada will be back to normal …. once no more floods.

    This will also happen in Barbados, and New Zealand and other countries.

    Re. Ivermectin totally wiping out Covid-19 in 5 weeks or less in India and Japan. It sounds like fake news to me except that MercK? has been reported as patenting a new very effective drug based on Ivermectin and even suggesting that they were willing to share some trade secrets with poor countries to assist in the global fight against Covid-19. I wonder what is up their sleeves. Do you have any recent news or comments on the new Merck anti-Covid medicine?

    A new study lead by a Mayo Clinic doctor suggests that individuals who were injected with the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine are 3.5 times more likely to get Cerebral Venous Sinus Thrombosis, a potentially fatal blood clot in the brain.

    According to the study, individuals who were injected with the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 shot are 3.5 times more likely to get a Cerebral Venous Sinus Thrombosis (CVST), a potentially fatal blood clot in the brain, when compared to the pre-pandemic general population

    WebMD explains that CVST “is a type of rare blood clot that forms in the venous sinuses in your brain” that “can block the blood in your brain from draining out toward your heart” causing “a type of stroke” that “stems from internal bleeding.” The resource explains that “CVST can be life-threatening” and warns readers, “You’ll need immediate medical attention.”

    The study was lead by Dr. Aneel A. Ashrani, a medical doctor and researcher at the Mayo Clinic’s Department of Internal Medicine. The research was funded by the National Institutes of Health. It was published in The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), a peer-reviewed medical journal. Despite the increased risk, researchers insist the “absolute CVST risk was still low.”

    The Mayo Clinic researchers also found that women between the ages of 30 and 64 were at the highest risk of the potentially life threatening blood clots.While the Johnson & Johnson injection only accounts for a reported 4% of the reported 400 million people who’ve been injected with COVID-19 vaccines, many individuals chose to get injected with their shot because it only required a single dose to be considered “fully vaccinated.” This is no longer true, as booster shots for both the Johnson & Johnson and Moderna vaccines have now been approved.

    Of note, the researchers reference reports made to the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) when presenting its findings:

    As of May 7, 2021, 8 727 851 Ad26.COV2.S vaccine doses had been administered in the US; 46 potential CVST events occurring within 92 days after Ad26.COV2.S vaccination were reported to VAERS. Eight events were excluded because they were potentially duplicate reports (4) or were not objectively diagnosed (4). Twenty-seven of 38 objectively diagnosed cases of CVST after Ad26.COV2.S vaccination (71.1%) occurred in female individuals. The median patient age was 45 years (range, 19-75 years). The median time from vaccination to CVST was 9 days (IQR, 6-13 days; range, 1-51 days); 31 of 38 cases of CVST (81.6%) occurred within 15 days after vaccination, and 36 (94.7%) occurred within 30 days

    CVST was one of the vaccine reactions listed in the letter written by Dr. Patricia Lee, M.D., an ICU doctor based in California, who wrote to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) claiming she has observed more vaccine injuries from the controversial COVID-19 vaccines than she has in the last 20 years working as a doctor.

    In the letter, she described observing “transverse myelitis, resulting in quadriplegia, pneumocystis pneumonia, multi-system organ failure, cerebral venous sinus thrombosis, postpartum hemorrhagic shock and septic shock, and disseminated CMV and CMV viremia.”

    “I can no longer silently accept the serious harm being caused by the Covid-19 vaccines,” Dr. Lee concluded. “It is my sincere hope that the reaction to this letter will not be to focus on me, but rather to focus on addressing the serious safety issues with these products that, without doubt, you have either missed or are choosing to ignore.”

    Abstract
    The presence of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) in water and wastewater has recently been reported. According to the updated literature, the stools and masks of the patients diagnosed with coronavirus disease (COVID-19) were considered as the primary route of coronavirus transmission into water and wastewater. Most coronavirus types which attack human (possible for SARS-CoV-2) are often inactivated rapidly in water (i.e., the survival of human coronavirus 229E in water being 7 day at 23 °C). However, the survival period of coronavirus in water environments strongly depends on temperature, property of water, concentration of suspended solids and organic matter, solution pH, and dose of disinfectant used. The World Health Organization has stated that the current disinfection process of drinking water could effectively inactivate most of the bacterial and viral communities present in water, especially SARS-CoV-2 (more sensitive to disinfectant like free chlorine). A recent study confirmed that SARS-CoV-2 RNA was detected in inflow wastewater (but not detected in outflow one). Although the existence of SARS-CoV-2 in water influents has been confirmed, an important question is whether it can survive or infect after the disinfection process of drinking water. To date, only one study confirmed that the infectivity of SARS-CoV-2 in water for people was null based on the absence of cytopathic effect (CPE) in infectivity tests. Therefore, further studies should focus on the survival of SARS-CoV-2 in water and wastewater under different operational conditions (i.e., temperature and water matrix) and whether the transmission from COVID-19-contaminated water to human is an emerging concern. Although paper-based devices have been suggested for detecting the traces of SARS-CoV-2 in water, the protocols and appropriate devices should be developed soon. Wastewater and sewage workers should follow the procedures for safety precaution against SARS-CoV-2 exposure.

    What’s new now is the empirical evidence of the link between floods (water) and the spread of the virus in most countries.

    Brazil, Iran, Barbados, Grenada, UK, Russia etc etc etc.

    Pretty clear the virus survives for a while in water and can be spread by this means.

    It cannot be refuted that there is usually a surge in cases in countries that experience floods.

    We could argue over cause and effect but suspect any reasonable person would have to conclude that such an argument would be splitting hairs.

    I certainly would not waste my time so arguing just looking for the empirical evidence.

    There is a surge or there is not a surge, that’s all that needs to be determined.

    The beauty in approaching the problem in such a top down fashion is that clear conclusions can be drawn rather quickly and courses of action suggested.

    No extensive lab studies of the virus, antibodies, T Cells etc etc need to be done.

    Simple, looks like a duck, walks like a duck and quacks like a duck …. its a duck logic!!

    When we all thought that we need a super medication against COVID, what this country did just dismantle the pandemic worry about. The Indonesian Food and Drug Monitoring Agency or BPOM has granted the Emergency Use Authorization for anti-parasitic drug ivermectin on July 15, 2021, as the therapeutic drug to support the Covid-19 treatment.

    The country was at its worst-case scenario epidemic according to its officials as the medical authorities were desperate to control the outbreak and Indonesia has 277 million people and is considered to be the world’s fourth most populous country.

    The Strait Times reported:

    The Indonesian government on Thursday (July 15) began distributing free medicine and vitamins to self-isolating Covid-19 patients in high-risk areas as the highly transmissible Delta variant of the coronavirus continued to rip through the country, emptying pharmacy shelves. Each package will have seven days worth of therapeutic Covid-19 drugs and vitamins and will be given to asymptomatic patients as well as those with mild to moderate symptoms including fever and dry cough. The medication for the latter group will require consultation with a doctor and a prescription.

    Medical facilities are stretched thin, and demand for oxygen and medication has also soared. As scores of people are isolating themselves at home and self-medicating, prices of drugs have shot up in pharmacies and online. The health ministry has since moved to cap the prices of drugs such as favipiravir, remdesivir, and ivermectin.

    On the other hand, Health Feedback has said:

    Clinical trials didn’t show a clear benefit of ivermectin in reducing COVID-19 severity, hospitalization rate, or mortality. Epidemiological evidence also doesn’t indicate that ivermectin helped curb the number of COVID-19 cases and deaths in Indonesia or other countries. However, these countries implemented other measures that have proven effective in limiting the spread of the virus, including vaccination and restrictions, which likely contributed to the decline in COVID-19 cases.

    Simply because two events coincide in time doesn’t necessarily mean that one caused the other. Firstly, ivermectin endorsement doesn’t tell us whether the Indonesian population used ivermectin more than populations in other countries.

    Secondly, even if they use of ivermectin did increase following the recommendation, we still can’t assess whether the drop in COVID-19 cases in Indonesia was due to the use of ivermectin or to other factors. Epidemiological data from countries that recommended ivermectin, such as India and Peru, doesn’t indicate that promoting the drug reduced the spread of the disease or its death toll. Both countries experienced multiple COVID-19 waves with high mortality throughout 2020 and 2021, and both withdrew ivermectin recommendations in 2021.

    In a new book coming out this week, Peter Navarro announced that Dr. Anthony Fauci damaged the U.S. and former President Donald Trump more than “the Bat Lady of Wuhan.”

    The former Trump Economic Adviser refers to Shi Zhengli, a Chinese virologist who studies SARS coronaviruses arising from bats at the Wuhan Institute of Virology, where COVID-19 is believed to be to have initially leaked. In the book, the ex-Trump aide holds Fauci accountable for “everything from the Wuhan lab gain-of-function catastrophe and suppression of low-cost therapeutics such as hydroxychloroquine and ivermectin to the political, partisan and deadly delay in delivering the Trump vaccines to the American people.”

    “In Trump Time, A Journal of America’s Plague Year” will become publicly available on Tuesday. According to the New York Post, the book takes aim at Fauci, who served as a Chief Medical Adviser to both President Trump and current President Joe Biden. Fauci’s wrongdoings, according to Navarro, included not telling Trump or the coronavirus task force that he knew the lab in Wuhan was conducting gain of function research on bat coronaviruses.

    The top immunologist at the National Institutes of Health has come under fire from Republicans for allegedly lying about his agency funding this research at the lab in China.Fauci, Navarro writes, “went behind the back of the Trump White House in 2017 to lift the ban on dangerous ‘gain-of-function experiments.” “It was Fauci’s agency,” he goes on, “that helped fund and orchestrate such… experiments at a bioweapons lab in Wuhan, China, where the pandemic almost certainly originated. And it was Fauci who, as we now know from a trove of emails, was being told as early as January 31, 2020, that the virus was likely engineered.”

    Navarro further announced in his book that Fauci was vehemently against restricting travel from China at the onset of the pandemic when President Trump and some of his aides recommended it before the virus hit the U.S.
    The Economic Adviser maintained that throughout a Situation Room meeting on January 27, 2020, the doctor stated: “In my experience, travel restrictions don’t work.”

    Fauci’s harsh and repeated critic is Kentucky Republican Senator Rand Paul, an ophthalmologist by trade before becoming a Senator. Paul has often gotten into heated and public arguments with Fauci over the gain of function research and whether the U.S. funded this type of project in Wuhan. This eventually led to the lab leak that caused the coronavirus pandemic.
