I did not think that I would have to write again about Barbados’ move to a republic. It has been a dud of a process and the selection of the President has been anticlimactic.

A noted academic described the process as “soulless”.  I think that has resonated with many Barbadians at home and abroad, even those of us who wanted the Queen removed as our head of state. Though, we know in our governance systems, it is a Prime Minister that “runs things.”

If former Prime Minister Freundel Stuart had approached Barbados’ transition to republic with no genuine public consultation on the form of republic Barbados was to become, former Opposition Leader Mia Mottley, based on the track record, would have likely played high politics with marches, walk-outs of Parliament and taking to the streets. As I have said in this column before, what is good for one is good for the other.

I want a republic as most Barbadians, but no one would ever call the current republican process, properly executed. In other ways it has been undignified and exclusionary.

The very way the independence constitution was created as an elite, hierarchal exercise for the big-ups, this move to a republic was done in a similar if not worse fashion.

At least at the time of Independence there was spirited debate on all sides of the argument throughout the country and in Parliament. This moment has not been met with that same level of debate or engagement.

We are told by some commentators that we are to beat the drums and dance in the streets to celebrate the fall of Babylon. How has Babylon fallen when Barbadians were intentionally and directly left out the process for deciding the type of republic Barbados has become.

How do some commentators live in their glorious contradictions? Celebrate removing the Queen as head of State and the oaths of allegiance to the Queen but cannot respond to the fact that we will have a new republic with an old independence constitution.

The independence constitution that for example, contains a savings law clause to ‘save’ existing colonial laws, does not contain an explicit right to privacy and contains a preamble that tells the story of the oppressor while excluding the story of slavery and the people whose backs, literally and figuratively, on which Barbados was built.

Whenever the issue is raised, no one can adequately respond, because there is none but to recognise the contradiction. Maybe for these commentators, it is like asking a builder to repair your house. You come home and it is nicely painted on the outside and you feel very good until you walk through the door to realise the termites and rodents still infest the walls, but it is all too late.

You paid the money, and the builder is nowhere to be found, but at least you can keep pretending to your neighbours that everything is well, as you swat the termites and rodents from inside your home.

The saddest part of this whole republican affair is that we have been robbed of what should have been ours. Our moment has been hijacked by a political class unable to understand the shortcomings of its approach. We have simply swapped one ceremonial head of state for another ceremonial head of state as selected by the political class.

This could have been a moment to innovate and show bold new thinking on our governance. The status quo, essentially remains the same, though the Queen was removed.

I guess when you broadcast to the world a deadline, but do not engage with your own people, you are driven by those external forces and timelines. Sounds, oddly colonial.

It would have taken tremendous resolve to pause and understand the process of transitioning Barbados to a republic needed to genuinely include the People as the constituent element of the constitution of Barbados.

  1. Mari

What’s soulless about the poverty funds?

  2. Like the unexpected covid we will deal with the hard part when we get to it

I will bet you that when it comes to the changes in the constitution is when you will hear the youth input the loudest especially when it’s something they do not agree with

  3. The most alarming aspect of modern society is the extent to which complete brass bowls, who do not know their brass from their face, are willing to speak with complete authority on matters on which THEY THEMSELVES admit complete ignorance..
    Petra Wickham style…
But even worse are those who offer LEADERSHIP in matters where they themselves are complete failures personally.
Bushie cannot but admire such brazen bowlery….
The very thought of Mia advising Bajans on health….. ha ha ha
or the Governor of the Central bank advising on wealth…. murder…
    shiite…
we could as well look to ac for wisdom…. wuhloss!!!
or to GP for righteousness….. MOCKERY!!!

We are so clueless that – even though our asses are already firmly planted in the ‘plimplers’, we are concerned mostly about some shiite ‘republic’ , vaccines and other irrelavancies …. much like the band selections on the Titanic…

    WAIT ‘TIL NEXT YEAR….!

I am not trying to be funny when I tell you that I do not consider the sole juice laden voice of KK as that of the youths.

  5. Head of State debate confusion

I have never seen such a confused public discussion of the appointment of a Barbadian as our head of state by such distinguished persons.

There are two separate issues here: the appointment of a Barbadian head of state, and the proposed crafting of a Barbadian constitution next year.

Neither has anything to do with a monarchy or a republic.

As I have written on more than one occasion, Barbados is not now and never has been a monarchy except in the fevered dreams of a few. We have no hereditary royal family.
Barbados is a parliamentary republic as is the UK. A republic is simply a state governed by the elected representatives of the people.

The old conflict between monarchies and republics was settled in the 18th century (remember the French Revolution of 1789?) and has no relevance to government today anywhere.
Every country in the world except a handful of former British colonies chooses as its head of state one of its own nationals.

In the case of Barbados, what happened in 1966 was that the Colonial Office negotiated with Barbados that the executive power to govern should reside with the Barbadian prime minister, the cabinet and the parliament, while the non-executive or ceremonial head of state position should remain with the British head of state, who happened to be Queen Elizabeth II.

This was a semi-colonial relationship, the practical consequence of which was that Barbados would have to accept in perpetuity as its head of state whoever was the head of state of the former colonial power, regardless of whether Barbadians might look with rank disfavour on that person.

We could do nothing about it.
We have wisely now decided to make a minor amendment to our Constitution so that we appoint our own head of state, to whom we give the title of president.
A quite separate issue is the crafting of a Barbadian constitution that will not be the product of negotiation between Barbados and the Colonial Office, but will be the result of discussion exclusively among Barbadians: a constitution that will reflect who we are and who we aspire to be.

For some reason that makes no sense, some commentators have complained that we should not have appointed a Barbadian as head of state except and until we embarked on crafting a new Barbadian constitution.
But the two things are quite separate. 99 per cent of Bajans want to cast off the last colonial tie and have a Bajan as our head of state. But there is no consensus at this stage on what provisions should go into our new constitution.
In the year to come, there is scope for a wide and vigorous debate in which every Bajan should be involved.

It is a pity that the appointment of our first Bajan head of state was tainted by a pathetic, puerile piece of parliamentary pompasetting.

    Dr Peter Laurie

  6. Good gosh Bush Tea are you still in the land of the living?! It sounds very much like you. Have you had enough of sheltering under Mia’s skirt or have you returned to throw some lashes on GP’s thick hide!!! Things are not looking good in Bimshire.

  7. I took a look at the articles mentioned in RY’s blog and much of what can be said or has been said is contained in those four articles.

My question to you is this..

    Can a person steal/erase history?

The answer is a resounding YES. What you can do is double book a date so that the joy of the Independence Day celebrations are attributed to Republic Day.

Mia is tearing pages out of the history of Barbados. She is publicly and skillfully castrating Barrow and then standing on the shoulders of this giant of Barbados.
    That is the real scam.

    Mariposa/AC/Xxx was right..

  8. Stupse! Your opposition to replacing Elizabeth with Sandra has nothing to do with any concern for the youth or process.

  9. Bushie
Good to see you here again. Hope we don’t have to wait for next year for your return.

  10. They have mastered the art of writing much and saying nothing…

All you need to read is this
“We have wisely now decided to make a minor amendment to our Constitution so that we appoint our own head of state, to whom we give the title of president.”

    and this
“A quite separate issue is the crafting of a Barbadian constitution that will not be the product of negotiation between Barbados and the Colonial Office, but will be the result of discussion exclusively among Barbadians: a constitution that will reflect who we are and who we aspire to be.”

One moment “the republicans” tell us that we shall whoop, holler, and celebrate becoming a Republic and in the next breath it is really a minor event..

Then they tells us it is not necessary to change the constitution but “we will change it later”.

This is what kills the discussion, ‘the republicans’ trying to support both sides.

  11. TheO

“On 22 March 2015, Prime Minister Freundel Stuart announced that Barbados would move towards a republican form of government “in the very near future”. Stuart told a meeting of his Democratic Labour Party: “We cannot pat ourselves on the shoulder at having gone into independence; having de-colonised our politics; we cannot pat ourselves on the shoulders at having decolonized our jurisprudence by delinking from the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council and explain to anybody why we continue to have a monarchical system. Therefore, the Right Excellent Errol Barrow decolonized the politics; Owen Arthur decolonized the jurisprudence and Freundel Stuart is going to complete the process.”[…]
The general secretary of the Democratic Labour Party, George Pilgrim, confirmed the move and said that it was expected to coincide with the 50th anniversary of Barbadian independence in 2016. According to Pilgrim, the change would be implemented through a bill that would be presented to the Parliament of Barbados.”

That was posted earlier by DPD

Mari know why she backed off after that .

Mia doing what Stuart want to and failed to do.

  12. I do not oppose replacing Elizabeth with Sandra.

I know it is difficult for you to expand the conversation.

    Push on mia push on!

  14. Nov 30th will alway been seen as independents day. And EB the father It is already ingrained into bajan history and brains

  15. The jurisprudence thing is above my pay grade. I focus on what justice is available to the poor and weak.

FS was a failure with all bad ideas. Now, Mia is picking up what he failed to carry through.

I am unable to follow heavy reasoning that is often provided here. Just a meat and potatoes guy

  16. Theo
Of course you don’t oppose it, duhhh!

  17. @J2
Nov 30th will alway been seen as independents day.

I guess that settles it. You looked through the years and saw it
    ——x—– xx
Exhausted. My clown half will be taking it from here.

  18. “FS was a failure with all bad ideas. Now, Mia is picking up what he failed to carry through.”

This comment would make sense IF the move to a Republic originated with FS. See what I meant at 9:52AM yet?

  19. Theo

I am doubtful if the Dames, Sirs and QCs will willingly relinquish what their hard work has earned them. Soon, we will have a two tier system of honors. Those given by a despised queen and those by the Republic.

    Xxx
How dare u dig into that area
Parliament has already dealt with that subject and they all agreed
The status quo remains as is

  20. Theo

Mia is tearing pages out of the history of Barbados. She is publicly and skillfully castrating Barrow and then standing on the shoulders of this giant of Barbados.
    That is the real scam

  21. TheO

The point being made is that there was no out cry from u or the others when stuart/ dlp proposed to do the republic on Independence Day

But now you all coming with a lot of BS bout the need the youth input
And Mia erasing history and barrow etc

Where was this input/ fear when DEMs wanted to do the same thing?

Wasn’t verla a dlp senator back then
    And Ronnie a dlp member
    Mari a dlp yardfowl

Why all the fuss now and not back then 2016?

But you can continue picking out what u want and faking ignorance

  22. TheO

    History will alway be history

Barbados will alway be ‘discovered’ in a certain year. But it will not erase the fact/ history that other people were here when it was discovered

Barrow and independence will not erase the history of grantley adams

Nelson gone from the top of broad street but his history still remains

Why you LoOking into to the years and seeing Mia replacing barrow or Independence Day?
Because it mia / u just want something to pick at?

  23. This is why discussing reform to the constitution will be an exercise for the academics. You lot must politicize everything .

  24. Same idea.. different reaction

    Freundel(time)
Theo: The man is a failure. Nothing will come of this. Silence.
J2: very bad idea. I got to fight this. Oppose vociferously.
    Enuff: where de Kool aid..
Lorenzo: no Kool aid fuh we

    Mia (time)
Theo: very clever woman; will be successful. Oppose vociferously.
J2: Wow: what a brilliant idea. Full support.
Enuff: pass de Kool aid, nuh
Lorenzo: Kool aid too frigging sweet.

  25. In 2026 we will be celebrating 60yrs of independence not 5 yrs of republican

  26. If you and dem did make a sink about it when it was proposed by FS then you all would have had a leg to stand on now mia is doing it

IMO. No one was opposed to it under FS and most bajans wood have gone along with it if he had succeeded

  27. Just read that a next politician might be leaving.

I lost count.. are we at eight now?

Something really rotten must have caused these sudden departures.

  28. “I do not oppose replacing Elizabeth with Sandra.”

    Is Sexy Sandy a Queen

  29. the Right Excellent Errol Barrow decolonized the politics; Owen Arthur decolonized the jurisprudence and Freundel Stuart is going to complete the process.”[…]”

they ALL KEPT the colonial system…..the modern day slave system….hold it and guard it…….it’s only the slimy politics was independent …that’s why they all still do as they like re violations of humans rights and local and international laws.and a relatively useless judiciary…..and corruption…etc….and Barrow added the anti-Black African Public Order Act…they all kept and still are…everything intact…to the dteriment of the majority population….

.don’t know who the fraud parliament think they are fooling but it’s their funeral….

  35. Drum Roll please

The one and only better representative for St. James South
    Ronnie Yearwood

Earlier today, I was announced as the Democratic Labour Party’s candidate for St. James South. I have been a friend of St. James South for a number of years, and so this is just a natural progression.

Many of you will ask why now, why this party and while there can be many answers put over very eloquently, the fact is after critiquing governments over the years, and the way Barbados works or doesn’t as is the case, and on careful reflection over the past year seeing our spiraling society, I wanted to put action to my critiques.

It is time to put people at the heart of representation and raise the standard. It is about moving politics beyond promises of street lights, roads, garbage bins, playparks, debushing, because these things are the bare minimum of representation. It is now about tackling not only those issues but today’s issues such as having access in a technology advancing age such as free wifi, better education, economic empowerment to put money in the pockets of Barbadians, housing for young people, safer communities, unlocking wealth in the homes and assets of older people so they can help their children and grandchildren, and overall creating opportunities for people to do better for themselves and their families. Better represention! Simply put, I wanted to get it done, because when we know better we do better.

I am doing this because I know better has to be done for St James South and my country, Barbados.
    #GetItDone #IShowUp
    #StJamesSouth #Barbados #SJS

  36. Woman, yuh hobby horse tired! So are your refrains of “jealousy”. Ain’t nobody on BU who could think I am jealous of any of you, ESPECIALLY YOU!

I am a simple soul, not overly impressed by much of what impresses most people. I have never sought to promote myself. My name remains virtually unknown even though I was on stage across Barbados for years. I did what I had to do and I then I disappeared. How can one keep a low profile while on stage? One buries one’s name in the name of a group. One does not take individual credit.

My son too is creative and does not want to be “famous” for it. We are who we are and we do what we do. And we totally enjoy it!

Here is anither story that demonstrates that you are a delusional liar.

I had a workmate/friend who married her a handsome, hardworking, responsible, faithful, helpful husband.

So wonderful was he that another “friend” of hers tried to steal him away. She was promptly reported and disposed of.

But my friend had two complaints about her wonderful husband. One was that when he cooked for her he used all the spices in the kitchen at once. And two was that he liked to “humbug” her with too much sex.

At that point in time, I had been long single, having decided not to settle for anyone who was not so wonderful as this woman’s husband.

This was my advice to her-
” You need to shut up and count your blessings! You have nothing to complain about that is worth uttering. When the man is cooking, put in the the spices for him without making a fuss. And be glad he likes to cook for you!

AND, you should be glad you have such a handsome husband to sex up. Use the spare time and energy he frees up for you by being so domesticated and give the man his bedroom business! You have no headaches so there should be no headache excuses.

Well, their relationship was so good that she promptly went home and told him about our conversation.

The next time the man saw me, he dubbed me his FRIEND FOR LIFE!

They are still married and happy.

So far you have claimed, without evidence, that I would steal from sick patients at Harrison’s Point. I debunked that with a true story of found money returned. You have claimed, without presenting evidence, that I have plagiarised your posts. I have repeatedly asked you to present the plagiarised pieces. You have claimed, that I am jealous of your being an author, when I have numerous children’s plays, poetry and monologues that people have long suggested I publish. They are catching dust in my study. Dusted one of them off and dramatised the reading for my son. He was rolling around on the floor laughing. Apparently the twenty-five year old script still got it!

Another true story from the Storyteller!

  42. WURA-War-on-U Yolande Grant
as you know you cannot tell anybody what they should or shouldn’t do regarding the Afrikan Ting
it is something that either resonates with them or not
if they are meant to find information put out there in the public domain the universe will lead them there in their search to do a pick up
like browsing in a bookshop many books are sitting on a shelf in a certain section and they may find it peruse it and if piques interest they might buy it and read it but nowadays people don’t buy books as often and usually will wait for the movie to be released

  43. Not telling a fella what to do regarding Afrika….some of them are total embarrasments and i won’t want anyone to know i know them…let alone loose them on the continent…next thing you know people will be blaming me for what happens next….nah….i prefer watch them where they are, it looks good on them…

people are not buying many books in bookstores these days, everything is digital, all ya need is a card and a laptop….no one wants to leave home anymore……but digital books or anything in that format sells like hot cakes…..although i did order a hard cover recently and about to order another one….so some people still read them..
