There was an old Ellerslie boy,
Whose time on the radio I used to enjoy.
At 65 from Starcom he promptly retired, Just six months later by the PM to get hired.

Fearing the spread of COVID,
Along came a plum job for David.
So now all of his Brasstack candour,
Has been bought by the highest bidder.

We know everyone is not Sir Johnny,
All cannot be fortunate like Farley.
And being on the back bench you see,
Isn’t for every stinging Bee.

Remember the rage,
That had Payne on the front page?
Hinkson didn’t make a sound,
So he hasn’t lost as much ground.

Now if my bed was made in St Thomas,
And Sharon was stop every Christmas.
I’d make time to enjoy my last full parliamentary session,
Before the bell tolls for the next general election.

Cause when the tide goes out,
No matter how hard you holler and shout.
Or if you have not a single doubt,
Some will lose their seats after the count.

It is now common to see,
MPs frequently on CBV TV. But with good reason,
Cause it is the silly season.

Some ain’t able speaking Medic-ally,
To get up and canvass daily. Soon the ones on the Edge,
Or the top of the Hill may lose their privilege.

Santia says she is a lioness.
But Vineyard’s bes’,
Is coming to tes’.
I hope he prays at St. Philip The Less.
His pal from the union in Harmony Hall, Is not one to take a fall. You see Toni is sure to contes’, Whether you call her Moore or Less.

What is a good MP?
That is hard to see.
Since they are not plenty,
Expect more whistles and calls for a penalty.

Last of all I will miss Caswell,
That man always gave them good hell.
By now he must already know,
That soon he’ll be home often to play with Snow.

  1. @Lorenzo September 14, 2021 5:52 AM “… perhaps a younger person could have been hired…”

It maybe that younger apolitical people do not want the “pick” because younger people have mortgages to pay and children to raise and they wisely see political appointments as too short term.

  2. I wish Mr. Ellis and the people and the government of Barbados well.

  3. And I’ll offer him this piece of advice.

Get the psychologists and psychiatrists on board. I am deeply surprised that the authorities seem not to have thought of this before. Psychologists and psychiatrists are the ones who TRULY UNDERSTAND how the human mind works. They are the ones who can get to the bottom of why people are vaccine hesitant or vaccine resistant. I believe that such people can be of great help to David, to the government and to us in this new post.

I declare that I am not related by blood, marriage natural nor political nor affection to any psychologist or psychiatrist.

  4. @David September 14, 2021 6:32 AM “He was forced to retire because of company policy.”

It troubles me that people are “forced to retire” because of foolish and wrong company polities, when the official age to receive a full NIS pension is 67.

These forced retirements are wrong and age discriminatory and both companies and government need to take a re-look. To force an otherwise good, competent employee out at age 65 makes no sense at all. If the employee is happy to go at 65, fine. But to force out an employee is both wrong and foolish.

  5. @John A
Let us hope Mr Elis can get through to these people that the 5 or 6 that tried before him could not reach. What I will say is this, if we fail to do what is necessary we will not only have a medical disaster but an economic one as well. Many companies and those in the tourist sector are barely holding on now. They need a better season than last year in the worst way.
    #####################################################

Have you considered the possibility that the reasons people remain unconvinced is because the government’s arguments are not very strong or persuasive? How difficult do you think the government would find it to get Bajans to accept $50,000 no strings attached? Generally, people can judge what’s in their best interests so if you can’t persuade the majority that what you are proposing is in their best interest, you need to go back and look at your argument.

I’m not sure if you’ve seen this article below, but the UK now has over 80% vaccination rate of over 16s yet the their CMO reports the Covid situation is actually worse than last year when they had no vaccines. If anyone is looking to vaccines as a get out of jail card for Covid, I think they are going to be disappointed.

“Prof Chris Whitty, England’s chief medical officer, warned that respiratory viruses such as flu and others would be “hugely advantaged” heading into winter.

He also emphasised that the country was entering the autumn with a much higher level of cases, hospital admissions and deaths than was the case last year.

On Tuesday, the UK reported a further 26,628 cases and another 185 deaths within 28 days of a positive test. The most recent data showed there were 8,413 Covid patients in hospital.

On 15 September last year, there were 3,105 daily cases and 27 deaths reported, along with 1,066 Covid patients in hospital”.

  6. Going forward perhaps government needs to offer a few national development scholarships in health communications. Or interested students can apply directly to these universities for admission and funding to complete such programs at the master’s or doctoral level. Or apply for a development scholarship through the particular embassy/high commission. Because as sure as the sun will rise tomorrow pandemics are not finished with us yet. Such education is also useful in communication to populations about obesity, diabetes, hypertension etc.

The following universities have excellent programs in this field:
    Boston University.
    Johns Hopkins University.
    New York University.
    Northwestern University.
University of Illinois at Urbana – Champaign.
    University of Missouri – Columbia.

  7. @Donna September 14, 2021 7:53 AM “I looked at her during this press conference. She looked at her wit’s end. She looked desperate.”

    Agreed.

I felt sorry for her. “Uneasy is the head that wears the crown” came to mind. It can’t be easy dealing with tens of thousands of vaccine hesitant people in the midst of a deadly pandemic. 735 people are in isolation right now. As sure as the sun will rise tomorrow some of them will be dead before October 15th.

If she shuts down the country she will be given grief by her political opponents.

If many more people die as is very likely she will be given even more grief.

  12. @John A September 14, 2021 2:00 PM ” The question is what will it take for a buy in by our people to get the vaxx rate up to 80%?”

    Dead bodies in the streets.

Even so some of the religious people will tell you that the dead have gone straight to heaven.

After all what is this vale of tears compared to everlasting life in heaven?

I looked at the obits last Sunday and one of the obits for a covid death had a picture of the smiling deceased at the open gates of heaven.

That’s what we are dealing with. It is not just about strapping young fellas on the block. In is also about deeply religious grandmothers.

That’s why I wish David well.

    Date: Wednesday 15th, September2021

Time: 11.30AM Eastern Caribbean time (10.30AM) Jamaica

    Venue: https://meet.jit.si/PressConferenceCNSC

Subject:  Press Conference to launch activities of Caribbean Network of Solidarity organisations with Cuba.

Details: On Wednesday 15, September 2021, the Caribbean Network for Solidarity with Cuba (CNSC), will be hosting a virtual conference to launch activities in support of our sister country Cuba, commencing at 11.30AM.

Speakers will be drawn from representatives of Barbados, Jamaica, St. Lucia and Trinidad and Tobago.

The 60 year old economic blockade of Cuba by the USA, coupled with the COVID-19 pandemic has made life difficult for its economy and the day to day existence of its people. Cuba has always stood up with the peoples of the world in their times of need.  We in the Caribbean know this first hand, with the current struggle against the Covid-19 being a prime example. We in the CNSC are standing with Cuba in its hour of need.

Your kind coverage of this important event will be highly appreciated, as Cuba represents the finest example of solidarity in a troubled world

  15. “And without a doubt the best orange juice in the whole world. You must try it.”

that and all the above, will leave you to school us on the rest..

handled differently, many people would have already been vaccinated if there was EDUCATION on the pros and cons instead of …there is a virus and you have to take the jab, nutten won’t happen and blah, blah, blah, and the greedy social parasites acting like they can just hold down employees and inject them…..they have to be shown WHO ARE THE MASTERS IN BARBADOS….shutting them would give them a different perspective in Black POWER…

the Mia crowd themselves did not even reseach the adverse effects and hid when people felt them……and .without so much as, there are side effects so you have to make informed decisions and research the best vaccine for you…they thought they can wrestle the populaiton they have to beg for votes to the ground..

with that tone coupled with all the WRONGS they are still doing to the Black population…all they will get is resistance…while some people do their research and make their own own decisions…about when they are ready…

politicians with 1950s mindsets fail to realize that THIS IS 2021…the 21st CENTURY…..they are too damn disrespectful Black people…

  16. And the limited in intellect who like to TIEF CONTENT has still done nothing to enhance the Blog….lol…

  17. How is it that Mia can find millions to hire consultants PR talking heads and employ the largest cabinet ever but can’t find money to place in people hands to help stimulate the economy ?

  18. True. I still having figured out how to flush your floaters!

  19. I await the enhancement to BU…not holding my breath, but waiting..

  20. @ Tee

Yes your point is a serious issue of concern. What seems to be happening in the UK is that many who have gotten the vaccine think they can do as they now like and have thrown common sense out the window. So we have a more contagious variant now with Delta and people that feel because they have been vaxxed that they are bullet proof. They will not listen to the CMO who has been preaching there that they can still catch it and transmit it, but they just now will not probably end up as sick or in the hospital having taken the shots.

What this has shown me is that you can not predict human behaviour regardless of how much info you give people.

  21. @ Cuhdear

I hope you are wrong but many of these anti vaxxers would as young children received several vaccinations. I remember when you had a vaxx card that you needed to keep updated. Today though we are better educated so we must oppose for the sake everything, even when the alternative for some of us could be the grave.

  22. Some of the problems in UK mirror what can be found just about everywhere, people are tired of and don’t trust governments, they have track records that justify the distrust, and don’t help by lying intermittently and consistently….and withholding critical information…and are yet to come to terms with the reality that the populations who elect them carry a higher level of intelligence, not only than before, but higher than those they elected…

So you like to cuss and ‘downgrade’ Bajan men but like foreign plantains!!

As far as it is known your BU buddy from “whiteHill” is not Jamaican and he still has your number.

when are your going to take up his invitation to view the ‘black-headed’ serpent in his garden full of fruits?

You can take along your fellow gardening enthusiast, the ‘Donna’ of St. Eve, for the ride on the head of the serpent.

BTW, does your ‘bigging-up’ of Jamaican men also apply to the Jamaican women which can be easily verified by many Bajan men?

Jamaicans are ‘One People’ who genuinely can claim to punch above their ‘geographic and demographic’ weight since the proof of the pudding is in the their successful performances.

  24. @ John A
“ Today though we are better educated so we must oppose for the sake everything, even when the alternative for some of us could be the grave.”

I’m not in the debate. However have you considered that this is a different time and the flow of information is completely different. When we were lining up to take vaccines there was an expectation that those vaccines were a part of life as it was then.
What we are confronted with is a global reaction, some positive some negative. We were not bombarded with anything like social media back then.
We cannot seriously transplant an environment of the 50s and 60s into the society of today.
This applies to basically all the issues we now confront. Back then we went to school, were told the nurses coming today and we lined up and took the jab. That is not the situation today.
@Cudear made a valid point when she stated that we perhaps need to pay more attention to those trained in sociology and similar sciences.- psychiatrists, psychologists etc.
There is really too much “ noise” and with politics in the mix ………..well we all know how frigging polarized the country is.
    Peace.

  25. This is what David Ellis said would be part of informing his approach- behaviour modification. Too much ignorance abounds.

  26. @ Tee White September 15, 2021 12:01 AM

    https://www.theguardian.com/world/2021/sep/13/fully-vaccinated-people-account-for-12-of-englands-covid-19-deaths

We should stick to the truth. Fully vaccinated people currently account for only ONE (1) percent of deaths in the UK. Corona virus behaves the same way as influenza in the past. What we are currently seeing in the UK is simple social Darwinism, that is, that life forms that are not viable are disappearing and those that are viable are surviving.

So our government should immediately abolish most Corona restrictions instead of kowtowing to the vaccine refuseniks. By the way, many would be interested to know how the vaccination rate in Barbados differs among the various population groups. This could allow conclusions about their general viability in the sense of social Darwinism.

It is absolutely unacceptable that a minority consisting of Muslim Brotherhooders, Rastafarians, dissenters, oppositionists and lunatics are taking our island permanently hostage.

There are all kinds of people threatening to take the Gov’t to Court over any mandatory vaccine policy, yet when a legitimate issue is obvious there are no takers.

  28. Ellis was not FORCED to retire. As correctly stated it’s a company policy – all VOB employees must retire by a certain age (60 I think) – from the heavy rollers to the clerks.

He was well aware of this as a condition of employment with VOB / redifusion

  29. @ David
One of the great things about debating societies is that basic rules of civility are employed. Those who engaged in such activities, had a better understanding of civil discourse. In order to avoid serious debate, we developed a culture of personal innuendo ; anything goes and that is now being manifested.
Unfortunately, matters surrounding serious crises in a society cannot be properly understood and or discussed unless participants understand basic rules or approaches to edifying discourse.
We will continue to see a decline in national discourse unless we once more begin to appreciate that there are basic standards to be met.

The challenge debating with some of you is that you like to split hairs. All agree it is company policy to retire at 65. The point made is that Aeolus and add Dennis Johnson if they had they way would have preferred to continue on at the company. This is why some have concluded he was forced to retire. The language is loose but context context context.

recently I heard a caller on a local station lamentating over the problem of govt asking govt workers to substitute their over time pay for days off instead of collecting a paycheck
What is this country coming to
Here we have a govt who pays big belly consultants but asking the poor worker to be unjust in the most disadvantageous way to themselves

This is a practice at some companies here.
It voluntarily so some take some in money and some as time off. The time off allows a longer vacation/ shorter week / longer leave maternity leave etc

Again it up to the worker to indicate how to allocate the overtime.
