Covid 19 and Economy Fatigue ‘Virus’ Spike

The COVID 19 virus is wrecking havoc on the Barbados landscape based on the number of infections experienced in recent days. Our worse fears are being realised with 92 reported infections listed in the recent dashboard. The COVID 19 virus is wrecking havoc on the Barbados landscape based on the number of infections experienced in recent days. Our worse fears are being realised with 92 reported infections listed in the recent dashboard. During a press conference yesterday authorities advised current trajectory if left unchecked could see 500 cases of Covid 19 infections daily starting as early from next week.

Another interesting revelation from the authorities is that unvaccinated persons AND children are showing high on the infected trendline.

Here is a simple bit of advice to Barbadians, unvaccinated AND vaccinated people – follow the rh Covid 19 protocols – wear your mask properly (not under your neck or with nose exposed), practice good hygiene by washing your hands and avoid rubbing eyes and nose, and keep your distance (in other words, assume the person standing next to you has the virus, especially if they do not belong to your household bubble).

Unlike all the many armchair experts the BU blogmaster cannot offer definitive advice EXCEPT to follow the guidance of the medical fraternity.

The blogmaster will resist being prolix because of all the writing posted about COVID 19. In summary, our rate of COVID 19 infections is spiking, we need to arrest it because our fragile economy does not have the capacity to withstand the sustain shock given the demands on it. Kudos to the government for building capacity in the healthcare system to manage a large numbers of Covid 19 infected people. We have the Cuban and Ghanaian nurses who will have the opportunity to earn pay.

The fear of the blogmaster is with a general election approaching political rhetoric from all sides will not help to guide the thoughts of a local population caused by COVID 19 and flailing economic fatigue.

    Japan is investigating the deaths of 2 men in their 30s who died after their second doses of the Moderna vaccine

    Two Japanese men in their 30s died after receiving Moderna doses from a batch that had been suspended by the Japanese government.

    The batches were suspended after 500,000 doses from the lots had already gone out.

    The men had no underlying health conditions or a history of allergies, but authorities say they have yet to determine a causal relationship between their deaths and the vaccines.

    Japan is investigating the deaths of two men in their 30s who died several days after being given their second shots of the Moderna vaccine.

    The two men, aged 30 and 38, did not have any underlying health conditions and had no history of allergies, said the Ministry of Health, Labor, and Welfare in a statement on Saturday.

    It is still unknown if there is a causal relationship between the vaccines and the two deaths, said Japanese health minister Norihisa Tamura to local broadcaster NHK on Sunday, vowing a “swift” investigation into the matter.

    The men’s doses came from one of the three vaccine lots whose distribution was paused by Japan last Thursday on suspicion of contamination. The country halted the use of 1.63 million Moderna shots after medical professionals reported 39 instances of foreign particles being found in vaccine vials from one lot.

    By then, Japan had already administered 500,000 jabs from the potentially contaminated batches, said Taro Kono, the minister in charge of Japan’s vaccination drive, according to Kyodo News.

    The lot from which the two deceased men received their shots had no foreign particles reported, but it was suspended out of caution because it was produced in Spain around the same time, said authorities.

    The detected foreign substance is thought to have been tiny metal particles, but health experts in Japan said it is unlikely that the pieces would have caused substantial health issues even if they were injected into the body, reported The Japan Times.

    On Saturday, Moderna, Inc., and Takeda Pharmaceutical, the distributor for the vaccines in Japan, released a joint statement saying that an investigation into the contaminated vials is being “conducted with [the] greatest sense of urgency, transparency, and integrity and is of the highest priority.”

    “At this time, we do not have any evidence that these deaths are caused by the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine, and it is important to conduct a formal investigation to determine whether there is any connection,” said the statement.

    Moderna and Takeda did not immediately respond to Insider’s request for comment and updates on the investigation.

    The only way we will get answers to why logical courses of action based on the known pathophysiology of this disease and why robust studies demonstrating success using cheap well tolerated drugs are completely ignored or used at the wrong stage is in a court of law.

    One or more people would need to bring a lawsuit against the CMO to force them to state under oath why they ignored good studies in favour of weaker ones when they made their decisions to continuously reject early outpatient treatment protocols.

    The experimental drug TEMPOL may be a promising oral antiviral treatment for COVID-19, suggests a study of cell cultures by researchers at the National Institutes of Health. TEMPOL can limit SARS-CoV-2 infection by impairing the activity of a viral enzyme called RNA replicase. The work was led by researchers at NIH’s Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD). The study appears in Science.

    “We urgently need additional effective, accessible treatments for COVID-19,” said Diana W. Bianchi, M.D., NICHD Director. “An oral drug that prevents SARS-CoV-2 from replicating would be an important tool for reducing the severity of the disease.”

    The study team was led by Tracey A. Rouault, M.D., head of the NICHD Section on Human Iron Metabolism. It discovered TEMPOL’s effectiveness by evaluating a more basic question on how the virus uses its RNA replicase, an enzyme that allows SARS-CoV-2 to replicate its genome and make copies of itself once inside a cell.

    Researchers tested whether the RNA replicase (specifically the enzyme’s nsp12 subunit) requires iron-sulfur clusters for structural support. Their findings indicate that the SARS-CoV-2 RNA replicase requires two iron-sulfur clusters to function optimally. Earlier studies had mistakenly identified these iron-sulfur cluster binding sites for zinc-binding sites, likely because iron-sulfur clusters degrade easily under standard experimental conditions.

    Identifying this characteristic of the RNA replicase also enables researchers to exploit a weakness in the virus. TEMPOL can degrade iron-sulfur clusters, and previous research from the Rouault Lab has shown the drug may be effective in other diseases that involve iron-sulfur clusters. In cell culture experiments with live SARS-CoV-2 virus, the study team found that the drug can inhibit viral replication.

    Based on previous animal studies of TEMPOL in other diseases, the study authors noted that the TEMPOL doses used in their antiviral experiments could likely be achieved in tissues that are primary targets for the virus, such as the salivary glands and the lungs.

    “Given TEMPOL’s safety profile and the dosage considered therapeutic in our study, we are hopeful,” said Dr. Rouault. “However, clinical studies are needed to determine if the drug is effective in patients, particularly early in the disease course when the virus begins to replicate.”

    The study team plans on conducting additional animal studies and will seek opportunities to evaluate TEMPOL in a clinical study of COVID-19.

    NIH authors on the study include researchers from the National Cancer Institute, the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, and the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke. Authors from the Pennsylvania State University are funded by NIH’s National Institute of General Medical Sciences.

    A new Covid variant detected in South Africa has made headlines around the world.

    On Monday the National Institute for Communicable Diseases in South Africa issued an alert about the “C.1.2 lineage”, saying it had been detected in all provinces in the country, but at a relatively low rate.

    C.1.2 was first detected in May, the alert said, but Delta is still the dominant variant spreading in South Africa and the world.

    A pre-print, non peer-reviewed paper published about the variant said C.1.2 “has since been detected across the majority of the provinces in South Africa and in seven other countries spanning Africa, Europe, Asia and Oceania”.

    The C.1.2 lineage has drawn the attention of scientists because despite its low rate in the population, it possesses mutations within the genome similar to those seen in variants of interest and variants of concern, like the Delta variant, as well as some additional mutations.

    So what do we know about the new variant, and how concerned should we be?

    Has the World Health Organization listed it as a variant of interest or concern?

    Meaning

    Buddhists believe that a person will continue the cycle of birth, life, death, and rebirth until they reach nirvana, or enlightenment. However, they don’t necessarily believe that a person is immediately reborn after they die. A person first goes through an “intermediate state” (bardo) before his next rebirth. Many Buddhists believe 49 days is the longest length of time the intermediate state can last.

    This is the key reason they perform religious ceremonies every day for 49 days. Buddhists offer up prayers to improve the odds that a person who has died will experience a positive rebirth. According to Tibetan Buddhists, when a person dies, they actually go through three stages. Prayers help them work through the process.

    The first stage occurs immediately after someone dies. This is the stage when what remains of their consciousness accepts death and spends time reflecting on their living experiences.
    During the second stage, which can last up to 49 days (although some Buddhists believe that it always lasts that long), a person’s consciousness may run into apparitions that can frighten them if they forget these apparitions are not real and can’t hurt them. That’s why loved ones pray during the 49 days after death in Buddhism. They believe a person’s consciousness can still receive and understand the words spoken to them in prayer. Because of this, prayers can theoretically help a consciousness navigate this stage. Without them, the apparitions they encounter might confuse them to such a degree that when they’re reborn, they end up in a body that will slow down their progress toward enlightenment.
    It’s interesting to note that the 49 days after death in Buddhism somewhat resembles beliefs from other cultures. While it’s important to remember that no two cultures or religions are exactly the same, according to some Christian beliefs, a soul remains on Earth for 40 days after death before fully transitioning to the afterlife.

    The emotional role of the 49 days after death in Buddhism

    The 49 days after death Buddhism tradition also naturally plays a role in helping loved ones mourn those who have passed on. This tradition, like so many other funeral and mourning traditions throughout the world, gives people the time they need to cope with a family member or friend’s death.

    In fact, after the 49-day ceremonies conclude, many Buddhists will still meet up to repeat their religious ceremonies at key intervals during the year after a person dies. For instance, mourners might gather together to perform ceremonies 100 days later, then 265 days later, finally ending the ceremonies on the one-year anniversary of a person’s death.

    This demonstrates how religious beliefs can help people accept a loved one’s death over a long period of time. After all, the mourning process can last quite a while. Religious ceremonies and traditions often allow the process to run its course naturally.

    Where it’s practiced

    Remember, it’s important to understand that Buddhist religious beliefs aren’t universal. This is true of virtually any major religion. Not all Christians practice Christianity the same way, and not all Buddhists practice Buddhism the same way.

    For instance, the 49 days after death in Buddhism tradition springs from Tibetan Buddhism. That means it’s most common in areas where Tibetan Buddhism has a strong influence. This obviously includes Tibet as well as Vietnam, Nepal, and Central Asia in general.

    What he really meant was my lungs cannot extract enough oxygen from the air that “I am breathing to sustain life but I can still talk. My bout with COVID has filled my lungs with fluid making oxygen extraction less and less efficient and if that don’t kill me, the fatal dose of fentanyl gine will.”

    A new highly mutated variant of the Covid-19 virus has been identified in South Africa as the country continues to battle high infections and death rates from the pandemic. Due to the fast evolving nature of the pandemic, this new variant from South Africa—the continent’s worst hit country with over 2.8 million cases—poses new challenges to regional efforts to contain the pandemic.

    Scientists say the newly identified C.1.2 variant is already active in seven other countries across Africa, Asia and the Pacific regions. This comes at a time when the delta variant, first identified in India, has been causing a spike in infection rates under the third wave.

    At least four African countries—Algeria, Kenya, Somalia, and Tunisia—have already “experienced a fourth wave” of Covid-19 cases, in addition to 38 others in Africa that have experienced a third wave, notes the African Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

    New and faster spreading variants are behind the continent’s surge in infections
    According to the World Health Organisation, “new and faster spreading variants are fueling the continent’s surging and widespread third wave”. The delta variant had been “detected in 97% of samples sequenced in Uganda and 79% of samples sequenced in the Democratic Republic of the Congo”. Apart from the delta variant, two others, the alpha and beta variants had by last month been reported in 32 and 27 African countries respectively.

    South African scientists are now closely monitoring the new C.1.2 variant which they fear could worsen cases and deaths and infection rates. This has come at a time when some African countries including neighboring Zimbabwe as well as Uganda and Rwanda had started to ease restrictions following what they believed was the end of a three month spike.

    Data from the Africa CDC shows “an overall downward trend in the number of new daily cases being reported for the last four weeks” although the region now has a total of 7.7 million cases and ~195,000 deaths as of Aug. 28 2021.

    According to South African scientists, the C.1.2 variant was first identified in May 2021 and evolved from C.1, “one of the lineages that dominated the first wave of SARS-CoV-2 infections” in South Africa. The C.1 variant was last detected in Jan. 2021.

    The highly mutant C.1.2 variant, on the other hand, has since been detected across most of the provinces in South Africa, including the key commercial province of Gauteng under which the capital, Johannesburg falls.

    As scientific studies continue to determine the full characteristics of the new C.1.2 variant, the scientists who identified it have highlighted concerns over its spike protein characteristics that are synonymous with “increased transmissibility and reduced neutralization sensitivity” noted in other earlier and worse variants.
