Lisa Cummins, Minister of Tourism

Two things occurred which were reported in the press on June 30th, 2021 that makes one wonder what the vision for the Tourism Industry is and if there is synchronization of the plans and actions in the various departments of Government. First was an article in which it was reported that the Minister of Tourism Lisa Cummins spoke to the workers of the Grantley Adam’s International Airport about branding. Second was the delivery of the Minister in the Ministry of Finance, Ryan Straughn who stated that government had undertaken debt of $ 80 Million of the Needham’s Point Holdings Ltd which operates the Hilton Barbados Hotel by issuing a new series of B Bonds to bondholders.

These 2 seemingly unrelated occurrences makes one question the leadership at the Ministry of Tourism and the action of Mr. Straughn with regards of the plans for the industry if one takes it as a given that a vision is translated into measurable plans of action or a roadmap to achieve desired goals.

What are the objectives of the Ministry of Tourism?

Having not seen the written plans of the Ministry of Tourism, there is that degree of difficulty to state the current purpose of that entity. No one knows the purpose of the tourism industry in Barbados as its objectives or goals are not listed on the website which is shared with the Ministry of International Transport. Only the purpose of the Ministry of International Transport is listed.

The vision that should be listed on the Website should be nothing less than to eradicate poverty by a specific date. Tourism should be of service to the people of Barbados and the development of the island, otherwise what is its purpose?

The number one revenue earner in Barbados is tourism. It must serve some development goal of Barbados. Poverty eradication must be the number one development goal of Barbados. Tourism is best fitted as a tool of development to eradicate poverty in Barbados. Some persons believe that poverty cannot be eradicated. Nelson Mandela stated “Poverty is not an accident. Like slavery and apartheid, it is man-made and can be removed by the actions of human beings.”

With the amount of money that has been earned in Barbados since the late 70’s, there should be no poverty here. A portion of the earnings for tourism must be used to eradicate poverty and the Unit which falls under the Prime Minister’s office should be moved to the Ministry of Tourism. One must agree that the poor housing stock of the lower classes in Barbados is a direct result of poverty and we must set out to change this as climate change may bring hurricanes to our shores each year.

International tourism receipts are expenditures by international inbound visitors, including payments to national carriers for international transport. These receipts include any other prepayment made for goods or services received in the destination country. They also may include receipts from same-day visitors, except when these are important enough to justify separate classification. For some countries they do not include receipts for passenger transport items. Data is in current U.S. dollars.

Government Contracts can be used to eradicate Poverty.

Despite the focus on tourism, the Government of Barbados also has a major role to play in poverty eradication. Its current policy of awarding contracts to a select few Barbadians has perpetrated the existence of the very wealthy and poverty. If wealth can be created by the government awarding of its contracts, then poverty can be eradicated using the system to award the contracts to a company that is owned by the people.

The Barbados Brand

On 30th June, the Minister was reported as asking the workers of the Grantley Adams International Airport to “protect it as a brand of excellence and world class hospitality.” However, all the talk about a branding exercise and creating a new slogan, and now asking persons to protect a brand is meaningless if the intent is not to be translated into a physical component and its use to assist in the development of Barbados.

If Barbados really is a brand as is constantly touted and not just a travel destination, isn’t it time for us to see hotels and other establishments in Barbados bearing the name the Barbados Brand. Isn’t it time that we see the translation from nebulous concepts and costly slogans which have nothing to do with reality in Barbados?

The Hilton brand was started in 1969. Commercial tourism in Barbados predates 1887 when the Crane Hotel was built. Isn’t it time to have a physical brand on the ground?

Perhaps the best action in term of branding would be to relieve the contract holders of the Hilton Hotel, and brand that along with several of the smaller hotels, B&B’s and guest houses as the Barbados Brand. This is where one can view the services of the Pom Marine coming into play by standardizing the training of these establishments under one umbrella which defines the physical brand. There would be no need for the government of Barbados to pay the Hilton Hotel for the use of its name.

To the Minister of Economic Affairs, does the signed contract between the government and the company which runs the Hilton Hotel align with the actions that you have taken? Needham’s Point Ltd. had 10 years to get their act together and now you have given them 10 more years to reap super profits off the backs of the taxpayers in Barbados. Clearly this decision was not well thought out and it is certainly not an expression of confidence in developing a physical Barbados brand hotel. You should have made the agreement null and void and together with the Minister of Tourism begin the conceptualization of the Barbados brand hotels. What occurred is not good stewardship.

To the Minister of Tourism, there is work to be done! When will you start?

Wish you had showed that much empathy when white sexual UK predator James the tourist took it upon himsef to assault a lady in her 50s…everyone turned on her …the victim…including you …Lawson..

Barbados is too damn DEPENDENT ON THE WRETCHED go nowhere tourism..that produces low paid workers and thieves for employers….useless governments refuse to do anything else outside of a product created by dead slave masters…..that generates POVERTY and ENSLAVEMENT..and has since the 17-1800s.

and is a magnet for crimes, because that is all stupid governments want to keep as a one income earner for over 260 thousand people…..unfortunate for the victim, but it’s time these fools in the parliament are held accountable for driving poverty and leaving the people suffering with nothing to look forward to because they are expected to depend on tourism only…..and that will continue to BREED CRIME…

  2. @Lawson
I see that you had a moment of clarity.

Indeed, the argument that crime happens elsewhere does not take into consideration our small economy and the impact that bad publicity has on it.

  4. I know this guy probably wouldnt know a celebrities wife or maybe care, but what if it was rooneys wife or some other star. I think the island would be crushed by the notoriety. Sad thing is your all fighting for the same tourist dollar.

  5. WURA is correct. Time long gone to cease this almost complete dependence on tourism. It is everything she says it is.

There is no country on earth where armed robbery and theft do not occur. If one or two such occurrences can cause such panic, then it is time we see the light.

But then again, when you market the island as paradise you have encouraged unrealistic expectations.

Why do people exaggerate so? I find it so damn annoying!

Right…and you love seeing them fight over a tourist, who lives primarily on credit cards, little dollar that only benefit the few…so how does that make sense

keep on claiming amnesia..see where that gets ya…

..billionaires and millionaires are in the minority…but it will bring the attention needed to expose that slavery system they got going in Barbados where a section…a large one….of the population is kept in generational poverty with the dependency set firmly in place….but that won’t bother you, Lawson

  7. These big ass primary schools are a waste! Children get left behind and no-one notices.

They have been trying to close the nearby St. Catherine’s School for thirty years. The parents protest every time. It is probably the same for St. Mark’s. When Bayley’s new facility was built people left St. Catherine’s to go there.
The latter’s roll was so small that they decided to close it almost immediately. Pretty soon the parents found out their folly. St. Catherine’s is now bursting at the seams. The young lady I taught to read at eleven years old went to Bayleys. At St. Catherine’s she would have been reading. All she needed was a little extra attention.

  8. In short, penny wise and pound foolish still stands.

You can spend the money at the primary school level or you can spend it at Dodds.

Build a new school for St. Mark’s and keep the classes small! Last time the IMF made Sandi reduce the teacher:pupil ratio and we rationalised schools. How did that work out?

Duke of Cambridge ‘sickened’ by racist abuse of England players and says perpetrators must be held to account

The Duke of Cambridge has said he is “sickened” by the “abhorent” racism aimed at England’s football players as he called for the perpetrators to be held accountable.

Prince William, 39, watched the Euro 2020 final at Wembley with the Duchess of Cambridge and Prince George, said it was “totally unacceptable” that the players had to endure such behaviour.

England football players Bukayo Saka, Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford were all subjected to racist abuse online after missing penalties as England was defeated by Italy.

The trio’s social media pages were quickly flooded with racist comments, leading the Prime Minister and the FA to also condemn the “disgusting behaviour”.

Gareth Southgate said the racism was “unforgivable,” adding: “It’s just not we stand for.”

The Metropolitan Police vowed to investigate.

Boris Johnson tweeted: “This England team deserve to be lauded as heroes, not racially abused on social media. Those responsible for this appalling abuse should be ashamed of themselves.”

As president of the Football Association, the Duke has been vocal in his support of the campaign to stamp out such behaviour, previously warning that social media companies must do more to prevent the spread of “despicable” racist abuse after several footballers were targeted by anonymous trolls.

In a personal tweet posted on Monday morning, he wrote: “I am sickened by the racist abuse aimed at England players after last night’s match. It is totally unacceptable that players have to endure this abhorrent behaviour.

“It must stop now and all those involved should be held accountable. W”

Home Secretary Priti Patel also said she was “disgusted” by the “vile” racist abuse players aimed at the players.

Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden tweeted that he “shared the anger” of the “appalling racist abuse” towards the “heroic” England team.

In April, the Duke joined a landmark three-day boycott of social media to highlight racism and abuse in sport.

The action, led by English football, was organised in protest of the failure of tech firms to prevent discriminatory and other offensive abuse on social media.

He said in January that “we all” had a responsibility to eradicate such abuse and create an environment in which it was no longer tolerated.”

  33. TLSN,

I am always concerned about my black brothers wherever they are in the world.

I had my first experience of having my accent mocked on the way to my new home from the port. It continued at every lunch time at primary school. When I tried to speak Bajan my father said I should stop sounding so foolish.

But I have mastered it, while still keeping my grammar intact for occasions when it is necessary. I revert just a little to the accent too, I am told, when speaking the Queen’s English.

As for the madness, I still get that. I have embraced it since I found out that it works for me.

Don’t take it so hard! Embrace your madness and your accent!

I’m an immigrant and football has shown me the vile depths of Britain’s racism
    Chine McDonald 2 hrs ago
    315 Comments

There’s only one occasion in which I don’t want England to win; and that’s when they play Nigeria. I was 10 years old in 1994 when my dad took us to Wembley to watch the two teams play each other. As a Black family, we felt conspicuous sitting with England fans, and had to hide our disappointment when David Platt scored the winning goal.

As a football-obsessed immigrant child, I felt the struggle between supporting my heroes donning the jerseys of my adopted country versus those players from my birth country, who had names that sounded like mine; I felt the conflict of being at home in two worlds yet uncomfortable in both.

US writer Ekemini Uwan puts it well when she describes: “The psyche of the colonized mind; always at war with itself.” Perhaps my childhood love of football – which has since waned – was one way in which I could feel accepted by my new home, swapping Premier League sticker books in the playground with white boys to show that I too belonged.

Though football is a beautiful game, it’s also always been one whose ugly side exposes the rotting flesh of racism that lurks beneath.

Despite what our government says, structural racism does indeed exist and this form of racism is so embedded in our society that it can seem invisible. But all my life, it’s been on and around the football pitch where the more extreme, visible, blatant racism has been able to manifest itself: from banana skins to racist chants to monkey emojis on black players’ social media timelines from cowardly neanderthals who think they are big men.

Racism is a scourge on the sport, which will evade any attempts to Kick It Out, no matter how many initiatives or statements the Football Associations want to put out about it. It’s a scourge on the sport because it’s a scourge on our society as a whole.

Which is why – like many others – I am kicking myself for my naive optimism. I should have known better. Over the last few weeks, I have dared to think that those bad days might be behind us. I joined with other first and second-generation Black Brits who have gone through the trauma of the reckoning with racial injustice over the past 15 months, and supported Eng-er-land.

The St George’s flag started to symbolise a national pride that included us, rather than prompting the instinctive fear many of us feel when we see it. We were drawn to Gareth Southgate’s leadership and vision of a diverse, multiracial nation that stood up for values of social justice. We were proud of our boys taking the knee.

But after pouring my heart and soul into last night’s match, screaming the house down after Shaw’s early goal and feeling heartbroken at the result of the cruel penalty shoot-out, I woke up to the reminder that England is far from the post-racist society it claims to be.

It stirred up those same feelings of conflict that are part of the black British immigrant experience. These ideas that never leave us: that we are celebrated only if we bring success not just within our own communities, but to the so-called indigenous (white) population; the idea that we need to be model minorities. Perfect immigrants for whom there is little grace when we put a foot wrong. No grace when we miss a penalty.

Like every young person who grows up with immigrant parents or grandparents, Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka will have been familiar with the mantra that as a Black person you need to be 100 times better and work 100 times harder in order to achieve in this country. Excellence is the best deterrent to racism, as my parents always told me.

The thing is, these young men are excellent. It’s why they were chosen by their manager to represent their country. It’s why they stepped up to the spot, taking the weight of a nation on their shoulders.

It could have all been so different. This morning, we could have woken up to stories of these three young Black players scoring penalties to win the men’s team their first major championship in 55 years. After the trauma of Covid-19, the death of George Floyd, the resulting Black Lives Matter protests and the criticism the team got for their anti-racist stance, it would have been the perfect story arc. But some stories are morality tales rather than fairy ones.

And the moral of this story is that a country where racists are supported by national leaders will never be a deserving winner. If racists on social media are to blame, then they were aided and abetted by some of those who hold the highest offices in our nation, including home secretary Priti Patel and prime minister Boris Johnson, who gave the green light to fans to boo their own players for saying they would not stand for racism.

I desperately wanted England to win, but I am happy that the greatest national team in a generation were not the ones to deliver victory to racists who chose to abuse them because of the colour of their skin, simply because they didn’t kick a ball into the back of a net. Black lives matter much more than this.”

Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka all failed from the spot on Sunday night as England went down on penalties.

The trio’s social media pages were quickly flooded with racist comments, leading many to condemn the “disgusting behaviour”.

“You don’t get to stoke the fire and then pretend to be disgusted when the very thing we’re campaigning against happens,” after she posted her outrage at the racist abuse.”

  38. Indeed, a formerly colonized country has much to work through. We have much to work through. However, I do not know how we can turn back a clock to a time none of us knew.

It is much easier to purge a stomach than a brain.

Long time ago I wrote a hopeful “psalm” to celebrate Emancipation Day. It spoke about creating a true Caribbean brew.

In my mind’s eye, the picture emerges of taking the best of both European and African cultures to create our own.

I feel it is the wrath of the Gods of Default. Rather than going full hog, this partial thingie was a cash grab (TBills) and a time delay (Bonds) so one might still legally attach value to the outstanding GoB paper. I think the Bajans call it “dah fah lick ya”.

  40. @ Donna

I don’t know why we find it necessary to keep pushing this silly, counterproductive ‘stay at home versus overseas Bajan’ nonsense.

And, what makes the argument even more ludicrous, is the fact that the same individuals who are whining about being called “mad” and their “accents mocked,” stood by in silence when a certain character was likening BU contributors to ‘animals, savages and wild beast that should be in the jungle,’…….. and even ‘said’ he was brilliant.

There was a time when some Bajans laughed at the accents of Vincentians and St. Lucians. We have been described as ‘tricksters’ and our “accents mocked” by Trinidadians (e.g. Sparrow’s “Smart Bajan” and Kitchener’s “Take Yuh Meat Out Muh Rice).” I’ve heard several jokes in which Bajans always ‘out smart’

People from several Caribbean territories believed homosexuality is rampant more so in Barbados than the other islands, especially among Bajans living in St. James. Some also say we’re arrogant. But, that characterization is also applied to Antiguans.

From the time people hear a Bajan accent, they jokingly refer to our famous ‘god b**** yuh’ or ‘r*** hole.’

Those stereotypical descriptions have not prevented me from forming friendships in the Caribbean islands I worked or visited.

By the way, a guy I knew from childhood, went to Canada when he was in his 20s. After one year, he returned here for vacation, spoke with an accent and could not remember the road to his grandmother’s home.

I’m sure you remember Dave Martins and Tradewinds’ song, “Copy Cats,” in which they sang, “Put a West Indian in New York city, overnight he becomes a yankee.”

These behaviours are not unique to Barbadians as the ‘pseudo psychologists’ want us to believe, but exhibited by people in every Caribbean island.
Sucking one’s teeth or to ‘stupse,’ for example, is not unique to Bajans as I’ve read one joker suggested, because Nigerians also ‘stupse.’ ‘In fact,’ Bajan and Nigerians share many mannerisms in common.

Surely the evidence clearly indicates the so called ‘Bajan condition’ is shiite.

  41. “the picture emerges of taking the best of both European and African cultures to create our own.”

it will still HOLD THE DISTINCTION of an ongoing Slave society…..it cannot be converted into anything else, in its present form…that is what i was trying to tell Prof. Hillary

  42. Nah…it emerged from the deep, dark evil spaces in the dangerous, neanderthal minds of racists…

“Mr Johnson’s official spokesman said, at a cabinet meeting earlier on Tuesday, that the prime minister had once again repeated his condemnation of the racist abuse aimed at England players.

“He said the abuse was utterly disgraceful and had emerged from the dark spaces of the internet,” the spokesman said.”

  43. This is cousin Boris:

“There’s no place for racism in this country and she’s backing the police to hold those responsible to account.”

let’s hope the copiers in Barbados’ parliament, stop thinking about BRIBES in exchange for racism and economic bondage for the majority population for ONE MOMENT and UNDERSTAND WHAT IS HAPPENING HERE….remember they love to croon and gush that they are “little england.”

..i would gladly seem them dragged up for their human rights violations against those who look just like them, so they are free to continue…

  44. We are living in some interesting times in the UK. For those of us who are familiar with the sixties, seventies and eighties the rampant racism and thuggery on display pre and post the so called Euro cup final was no surprise.

We have watched “Bo Jo” weave his witchcraft over his party since he became leader of the UK Conservative party. There are many who have come under his umbrella. He has a sizeable quota of Asians and a surprisingly large number of African descended MP’s who appear to be comfortable to reside in this close circle.

It should be noted – as always – that two individuals who have stood up as totem poles and have agitated for social inclusion and justice have been the descendants of West Indian descended immigrants: Lewis Hamilton and Marcus Rashford.

Why oh why have our politicians allowed our economy to be anchored and rooted on white British tourists. The UK diaspora have warned Barbadians that these people are wicked and evil and yet, and yet, we continue to lower ourselves for the sake of a few dollars.

  45. I tend to agree with your contribution.

“By the way, a guy I knew from childhood, went to Canada when he was in his 20s. After one year, he returned here for vacation, spoke with an accent and could not remember the road to his grandmother’s home.”

My memory is fading, but I seem to recalls few that did not leave the island had an American accent.

And I do not do one star.

corruption, greed, wicked themselves, money laundering opportunities, and the wannabe slave master mentalities that makes them always want to see their people immersed in poverty, so they can pretend they got pedigree.

They can’t say they weren’t warned, i spent 9 years on here telling them nearly every day that the slave master devised tourism dependency will run them into trouble, they had an opportunity to release the marijuana to the people, but they wanted white slave masters to manage slave plantations with the majority population, now mostly reduced to impoverishment, as the slaves…they went out of their way to do it…

.that also backfired with all the big countries now looking to Africa for supply, so the small time frauds in Barbados are now shit outta luck..

..Karma = demoting your people to poverty to push them onto slave plantations…..comes with pay back and backlash.

  48. My on the ground investigation are being told that underneath all of govt calling for bajans to adhere to protocols that some blame can be placed on the Haywire entertainment organizations having fetes and parties when barbados protocols were not stringent
