Honey is the most influential force known to man.  Governments and businesses who want to learn a competitor’s trade secrets, need only send a honey trap.  Men at the height of their professional careers, and who cherished their families, have lost it all for honey.  Let us try to understand why.

When an attractive woman smiles at a man, he becomes vulnerable.  If she talks to him, his kung-fu is useless.  If she touches him, it is over.  He might as well put a bridle over his head, and place the reins in her hands.

STRONG HORSE.

While we can accomplish much alone, we have the potential to accomplish much more together.  The closer and longer the union, the more we can get done.  Marriage is the closest long-term union we know.

A married man is like an exceptionally strong horse.  A wife can ride her husband anywhere she wishes.  There is no load too heavy, no place too far, and no barrier too high that he will not attempt to overcome with her in the saddle – which is its own fulfilling reward.  Therefore, a wife wields considerable power.

Despite her own accomplishments, a wife can use her power for good or evil.  She can, like the accomplished Ruth Graham, direct her husband where they storm the gates of hell.  Or like the accomplished Jezebel, direct her husband where they storm the gates of heaven.

THE WHIP.

Once married, some wives are deceived into thinking that there is something more powerful than honey.  So, they drop the reins, climb out of the saddle, pick up the complaining whip of criticism, and beat the horse.

While honey is the most powerful motivational force known to man, complaining is the least.  Such an abused man is not directed to accomplish anything.  He simply lives day to day, looking forward mainly to his next meal, and sleep.

DROPPING THE REINS.

A husband can only be ridden by one woman at a time.  A wise wife will ride her husband for a lifetime, to accomplish things that will benefit her household and community.  That includes directing him to become a more competent, kinder, wiser, and healthier person.

An unwise wife drops the reins.  This exposes her husband to be directed by someone or something else.  Another woman, who knows her power, may pick up the discarded reins, and ride that married man to provide her with: land, a house, a car, and money.  Tragically, the married woman, who discounted her power, can only persist with the useless whip, since another has the reins.

ADDICTIONS.

If another woman will not pick up the discarded reins, then the man may be directed by harmful addictions.  Such addictions include: drugs, alcohol, pornography, prostitutes, violence, gambling, and laziness.  The less active the husband, the more harmful addictions he may attract.

An addicted man will spiral away from the centre, to the destruction of his health, business, and family.  A wise wife will reject the whip, pick up the reins, get back in the saddle, and direct the traumatised beast back to the safety of the centre.  Again, tragically, many wives just keep using the useless whip until the bitter end.

FAILING.

Both husbands and wives learn new things together by trying, failing, and trying again.  Trying and failing are important and necessary stages of the growth improvement process.  Complaining, blaming, and criticizing each other during the inevitable failing stage, tends to delay the next trying stage, which only delays their joint progress.

Wives should not get discouraged if their husbands must try more than once to overcome a hurdle.  Instead, they should be encouraged that he keeps trying.  Husbands should not get discouraged if their wives direct them down a dead-end.  Instead, they should see it as part of the exciting journey, laugh it off, and look forward to where she next directs.

Women planning to get married, should plan to ride their husbands to the path of doing what is right, for their family and community.  Men planning to get married, should spend their courtship trying to understand her intended path – before she gets into the saddle.

Grenville Phillips II has done pre-marriage counselling for the past 25 years.  So far, none of those couples have gone through a separation or divorce.  He can be reached at: NextParty246@gmail.com

Notes:

1.  In the US, approximately 41% of first marriages end in divorce, 60% of second marriages, and 73% of third marriages.  Therefore, divorced persons may not be learning the lessons that they should have learnt in their first marriage – selflessness (putting the needs of the other before themselves).

2.  Domestic violence is a failure of the community to stop the practise.  A man who beats his wife should be properly sorted out by the men of the community, so that all men know what to expect if they dare introduce that despicable behaviour in their community.  Those communities that permit it allow it to become a cultural norm.

3.  A husband without a rider to provide direction is well-advised to quickly offer his discarded reins to God.

This is one time you have me “cuffuffled” . Sorry. That is the only word that describes accurately my reaction. May I ask what social and human purposes marriage and man/woman relationships serve? I think most relationships fail because the couples have not agreed on what marriage is and what they expect to get out of it.. In the old time days couples spent time in their courtships to find out if their goals coincide. I think we need to go back there. Alternatively, we can design models suited to our era. We still have to design basic principles.. Your analogies are a bit too mechanistic. Man thinks and react to stimuli social and physically. There is therefore no one solution for all interpersonal relationships. Lots of compromising is necessary. It is a marriage of two distinct persons. Constant tweaking and adjustments.Flying an airplane is a fitter analogy. I think.

The thing about domestic violence is that it principally takes place in private, and that women the most likely victims are seldom willing to complain publicly, so that makes it extremely difficult for “the community” to stop it. I don’t think that is is fair to blame “the community” How can I as part of the community be blamed when I have NEVER struck anyone on my adult life.

  7. Vernon Jordan, who rose from the Jim Crow Deep South to become a civil-rights leader and later a dealmaker who skilfully shuttled through the corridors of American political and corporate power, has died aged 85.

His broad range of relationships and reputation for straight talk made him a go-to adviser for chief executives and politicians alike. Among his best known associates was president Bill Clinton, whom he had befriended when Clinton was a rising star in Arkansas politics in the 1970s.

While his status as the ultimate Washington insider whose unrepentant defence of the role of moneyed interests in politics drew criticism, it obscured both a youth shackled by prejudice and a remarkable role in the 1960s civil rights movement. That work sometimes put his life in danger, including in 1980, when he was shot by a would-be assassin outside of a meeting of the National Urban League, the advocacy group he headed.

“Vernon E Jordan Jr passed away peacefully last evening surrounded by loved ones. We appreciate all of the outpouring of love and affection,” his daughter Vickee Jordan said in a statement.

Bill Clinton wrote on Twitter, “Vernon Jordan was a wonderful friend to Hillary, Chelsea, and me, in good times and bad. We worked and played, laughed and cried, won and lost together. We loved him very much and always will.”

I am the ultimate optimist. Because you have to believe that you can make something happen

Vernon Jordan, in a 2018 interview with the Financial Times
Jordan was born in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1935. His mother ran a successful catering business and as a teen, Jordan would often join her as a waiter. The experience gave him exposure to local white lawyers, businessmen and the world beyond his.

Jordan left Georgia to attend college at Indiana’s DePauw University where he became acutely aware of his status as a black person in white America. He told the Financial Times in 2018: “We were reading the history of civilisation and my classmates, who’d gone to private schools and fine township high schools, were on chapter six; I was struggling to get out of the preface.”

While in college in the 1950s, he worked as a driver for former Atlanta mayor Robert Maddox. Maddox was shocked to learn Jordan was a college student, and once shouted “Vernon can read!” — which later became the title of Jordan’s memoirs.

After college he attended law school at Washington’s Howard University, the elite black educational institution that would produce several star civil-rights lawyers. He then returned to Atlanta to work with a famed attorney Donald Hollowell.

Hollowell, with Jordan’s assistance, successfully represented a young black woman who sued to desegregate the University of Georgia. Jordan would later go to work for various civil rights groups in the 1960s, travelling across rural Georgia registering voters — work that came with the threat of lynching from the Ku Klux Klan.

Through the 1960s, black America had grappled with how confrontational it wanted to be with white America, with Jordan choosing to favour a path through economic advancement through mainstream avenues. “To make it all work, we cannot have the same roles and competencies,” he said.

In 1970, Jordan and his family moved to New York to lead the United Negro College Fund and then going on to run the National Urban League.

After surviving the 1980 assassination attempt, Jordan’s career took a corporate turn in 1982 when Bob Strauss, the Democratic party poobah, asked Jordan to join his Washington law and lobbying firm, Akin Gump. From that perch, Jordan would join blue-chip boards such as Xerox, Dow Jones and RJR Nabisco.

As recounted in the book Barbarians at the Gate, it was Jordan who presciently warned RJR chief executive Ross Johnson that a management bid could prompt a hostile takeover.

Jordan, who never ran for elected office, did not have a formal role in the Clinton White House, though he was close to both Bill and Hillary Clinton. Jordan was also central to one of the lowest moments of Bill Clinton’s presidency, when he was enlisted to help Monica Lewinsky, a White House intern with whom Clinton had an affair, secure a job at Revlon, the cosmetics group where Jordan was a board member and close with its boss, Ron Perelman.

Jordan was called to testify before a grand jury by special prosecutor Ken Starr but was never charged with wrongdoing.

In 1999, Jordan joined boutique investment bank Lazard, where he worked from New York during the week before returning to his home in Washington on Thursday nights. His role at Lazard was much of what he had been doing for decades: making high-level introductions and brokering peace between titans.

Though he had supported Hillary Clinton over Barack Obama in the 2008 Democratic primary, the first black US president would eventually become close with Jordan. That pair, along with Bill Clinton, joined up for a golf match in 2015 on Martha’s Vineyard where Jordan had been a fixture in the summer since the 1970s.

“I am the ultimate optimist. Because you have to believe that you can make something happen,” he told the FT in 2018. “I don’t know how to tell you this, and it may sound a little crazy, I always knew that I was going to be somebody.”….(Quote)

  8. Vernon Jordan rose from lower black middle class to the top echelon of the black upper class and the above post notes he spent his summers on Martha’s Vineyard.

Incidentally, Jordan died just a few weeks after the writer Lawrence Otis Graham who penned “Our Kind of People” a book about the black upper class that “summers” on Martha’s Vineyard.

  10. National talk on tourism soon
    By Gercine Carter gercinecarter@nationnews.com
A major national consultation on Barbados’ tourism is being planned for later this month.
Minister of Tourism Senator Lisa Cummins said the initiative was being undertaken in collaboration with the Inter-American Development Bank and the United Nations World Tourism as local tourism planners were on a mission to “reimagine” the sector for the future.
The consultation, she explained, would examine issues such as the cultural and domestic authenticity of the island’s tourism product, prospects for youth entrepreneurship in the sector and involvement in the sector at the community level.
Visitor profiles and new tourism worker profiles would also be included in the scope of the examination.
Cummins explained that the worldwide decline in tourism as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic had provided an ideal opportunity for Barbados to pause and take the critical look at the industry, the main plank of the island’s economy, and create a new vision for it going forward.
She projected a tourism industry of the future drastically transformed from what existed in the pre-COVID-19 period and one in which she envisioned wider participation at all levels.
“It cannot be business as usual in the future,” Cummins said, adding: “We are using the time to reimagine the tourism industry sector.” She noted there was currently hardly any traditional visitor arrivals to the island, except for Barbadians who live abroad, returning home for the funeral of a family member or to attend to other personal matters.
Cummins also said Barbados’ 12-month Welcome Stamp would continue to be a significant feature of the island’s tourism thrust in the future.
She said the innovative programme, introduced by Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley early in the pandemic to attract long-stay visitors, remained “one of the iconic and flagship programmes of the [tourism] industry”.
While some who had taken advantage of the opportunity to live and remotely operate their businesses from Barbados have since cut short the arrangement and returned to their respective countries mainly due to developments related to COVID-19 protocols, Cummins said Welcome Stampers who remained in Barbados “have become brand ambassadors for Barbados.”
She disclosed a “revamp” of the programme was currently being undertaken. She said the Ministry of Tourism was currently exploring the prospects of “entering aggressive partnerships with Chambers of Commerce” in the US market, which, according to the records, is the main source of Welcome Stamp business.

  11. Layne: Possible increase in airline capacity
Barbados can brace for a possible increase in airline capacity.
Acting chief executive officer of the Grantley Adams International Airport (GAIA), Terry Layne, said this was based on the fact that airlines were already starting to file their schedules.
“I know airlines are beginning to file schedules which indicate there is some confidence that there will be a possible increase in capacity coming back into Barbados. So if traffic does see a bumper for summer, we will be able to handle it because it’s easier to get a PCR test now than it was a couple months ago, [and] you have the Bim Safe app now on stream – that helps with the tracking and it’s a lot more refined than when we started,” Layne said.
Cautious in his predictions, he said some airlines appeared to be optimistic about the upcoming months.
Layne said it was too soon to speculate about winter 2021. “Things may a little different, all things being equal we should have a lot more countries being vaccinated and we should see some changes. But I don’t want to speculate for winter as we know things can change,” he added.
Layne did, however, say, that if there were more arrivals airport staff would be prepared.
He gave this assurance after noting their experiences at the start of the winter season in 2020, the improved COVID-19 testing and tracking, as well as the airport’s vaccination exercise.
“We had a full cross section of airport employees, from the airlines, GAIA Inc, air traffic, concessionaires both young and old. And everybody was pretty much receptive to it. I would say it was overwhelming,” he said, noting that between 175 and 200 people were vaccinated a day approximately five days.
Last month GAIA staff were among the first front-line workers to receive the first of two shots of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine as part of Barbados’ COVID-19 vaccination programme.

    The “Gospel” according to Adam!
And underscored by the likes of the Rasta man Samson, the randy King David and his son Solomon the wisest fool of the lot.

This battle between the ‘thighs’ of sexes started way back in the allegorical Garden of Eden when the phallic-shaped serpent put enmity between them as he pointed to the tree of good and evil which grows right in the centre of the human body euphemistically called the hairy garden hiding that ‘bitter sweet’ fruit(s).

This battle will never end until man returns to Mars and wo(e)man to Venus or men are treated like bulls on a dairy farm.

Solomon handled this ‘man versus wo(e)-to-man’ affair rather wisely by keeping a ‘fowl-pen’ with 1,000 chicks to fight over him leaving him in ‘p(i)eace(s)’ to get on with his work of re-writing ‘scriptures’ (like both GPs on BU) as dictated by his god while his two favourite ‘girls’ with the Baltimore grip and the Shanghai squeeze, Naamah and the Queen of Sheba, to continue to squabble over the ‘fruits’ of his loins and his legacy of worldly possessions.

“Meaningless! Meaningless!” says the Teacher. “Utterly meaningless! Everything is meaningless.”

“I have seen all the things that are done under the sun; all of them are meaningless, a chasing after the wind.”

  13. A rather crude piece that left my seventeen year old son crying,
    “WHAT?”

We discussed it and then he steupsed, put the phone down on the kitchen counter scornfully and said, “You can keep your Grenville!”

    Oh DEAR! MY Grenville!

What Grenville is saying is on par with what Miller has long said here.

And then people want to take shots at Cuhdear Bajan and call her a man hater! Is this how men see themselves? No wonder the world is a mess!

So… women hold the reins, you say! All we need to do is screw the jackasses and we can then ride them to a destination of our choice. But I hear some like the reins AND the whip.. Some even like spurs!

Is that all there is to a man?

Not really. There are many who have evolved beyond that. Sex remains powerful… but not all powerful. It is much more accurate to say “The [purposeful] hand that rocks the cradle rules the world,” I have found.

Mothers need to guide their sons in these matters from the womb. It works! They CAN use their big head instead of the little head. They CAN exercise self-control. They CAN see a woman as something more than a pleasure pot. They CAN think with their big head, make good decisions, work to accomplish and achieve great things other than an orgasm.

Of course “Two [complementary] heads are better than one” and it is always easier for a man to be good with a good woman “behind” or rather, BESIDE him.

So yes, it is a good idea for wives to have frequent, quality sex with their husbands and temper their criticism with encouragement. But to grow and enjoy a healthy relationship with an equal not as manipulation or the means to control a dumb animal.

A donkey does respond more readily to a carrot than a stick and even a thoroughbred walks towards the hand that holds the sugar cube.

Still, one can lead a horse to the water but you cannot make him drink! So women must learn to choose “horses for courses”.

Sorry…. getting carried away with the “equininnity”.

Never put down a jack of an ass!

If you were a real fan of the Mighty Sparrow you would be singing the high praises of the lowly ass; even of the Balaam breed.

A jackass will ‘outlast’ a horse any time even if he is as infertile as a mule mixed with the strikingly opposite colours on a black and white zebra.

BTW, we see you want homo sapiens to return a state of blissful ignorance in the paradise of the Garden of Eden where man and woman walk around without fig leaves but still exposing their belly buttons as proof positive there was never a stage of childlike innocence.

When the miller dies he wants to return with the mind of a woman in the body of a jackass with an extension to boot his previous ‘dead’ foot.

Even if it is only to repopulate that dying breed of equine from the African wild ass family to prepare for the return of Jesus in order to transport him around his earthly kingdom like in the good ole environmentally-friendlier days instead of travelling in the Pope’s bullet proof vehicle.

“I think you need to update your knowledge of Anglicanism!”
    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Update knowledge?? About a denomination that is fast disappearing in its own mother country where many of its former temples- dedicated to the memory of the serial killer of women Henry the Eight- either have been ‘converted’ into Islamic places of worship or housing projects for the weirdo rich or council accommodation for ‘apostate’ refugees?

You can even ask Hal Austin, sans his Bajan syndrome of embellishment, to verify how many people attend the fast disappearing Anglican churches in London.

Even in Little England, the mini-home of Anglicanism, that once dominant denomination has lost its aloof place on the pedestal of religion with its main temple of a Cathedral on RBB’s St. Michael Row nothing but a rundown palace dedicated to King James and about to be turned into a ‘rest home’ for the vagrants and the Covid-causing homeless about to descend on Bridgetown to seek both food and nocturnal refuge.

  23. Then stop talking nonsense! Anglicans today are not tethered so tightly to dogma or stories They are at the forefront of embracing and respecting all religions, including African religions and spirituality.

It is not the Anglicans you hear condemning Haiti.

  24. @ Donna March 5, 2021 5:44 PM

You are right! Anglicans are not that much into ‘tall stories’ telling in the more enlightened white West.

But Anglicanism biggest growth market is indeed the English-speaking parts of the ‘dark’ African continent.

That’s why some African entrepreneurs seeking to make their easy fortunes see the ‘English’ religion as the potentially biggest growth market to generate streams of constant income.

Why do you think so many ‘genuine’ African men of god(s) are so determined to become ‘certified’ men of the Prosperity Gospel using the Africanized Anglican church as their path to success?

A path previously followed by their brothers (and now sisters) in ‘Anglicanised’ places like Barbados in the West Indies but with only dying success.

Have you ever heard of the Universal Church of the kKingdom of God (UCKG) where much African obeah influence plays a significant role to rival African (Haitian) Catholicism?

Islam will soon be the growingly dominant religion with Rastafarianism- with the legalization of the formerly satanic marijuana for sacramental purposes- in a ‘poor’ second or third place.

  28. Miller,

I have never heard an Anglican priest in Barbados preaching the prosperity gospel. As for African Anglican priests, you should blame that on the African scammers. Just as you should blame the English for the dastardly distortions of epic proportions that allowed them to champion slavery..

Anything can be used for good or evil. Religion is no different. You have a habit of blaming the religion for the evil heart of some human beings.

Anglicanism has served me well. It contributed greatly to the person I am today. It contributed greatly to the man my son is becoming. I am happy with how we turned out.

So….I will not throw out the baby with the bathwater.

  29. Hi Cuhdear:

Your paraphrase is entirely yours – and is entirely wrong. You are making wives seem like prostitutes.

If you do not know what honey is, then it is better to ask, than misinterpret it so erroneously, attack your own invention, and then ascribe your invention to me – that is also dishonest.

As explained in the article, the smile of an attractive woman disarms a man. He would do anything for that smile. He marries to receive that smile for a lifetime.

Unfortunately, some wives stop smiling at their husbands sometime after their marriage. Husbands normally report that it was their wife’s smile that initially attracted them, but some report never seeing a genuine smile from their wives in decades. Tragically, many wives think that complaining is a better way to motivate their husbands.

Please note that honey is not sex as you have erroneously determined. If it was, then men would normally marry promiscuous women. Generally they do not. Many tend to use promiscuous women like toys, but they want a chaste/faithful wife.

    Grenville
