David, does our Defence Force still get computers from the Chinese and other foreign governments?

I remember in either 2016 or 2017 laptops were donated to our parliamentarians. Unfortunately, they were lapped up by our grateful  representatives with the most excitement like kids getting a candy treat.

My concern was expressed and I was assured by the IT person in parliament the laptops would be wiped, which was laughable. Thus, the question begs how secure is our IT infrastructure and what is the protocol on receiving computers from foreign governments by state agencies and government employees?

Something as simple as accessing the Accounts Department of a state enterprise can be a treasure trove. The person with lowest net pay if not of high moral persuasion can be an ideal target for bribery. Just another stupid weird silly concern. The below shows how naive some countries can be and how those who are compromised can destroy any semblance of an orderly society by their stupidity. #TrustAllSuspectAll

Fast forward to 2020. Some African leaders are compromised into sheep or risk exposure of their dirty dealings. The greatest treat to humanity, are humans who corrupted and compromised.     Agreed. But this problem is much more pervasive.

    We also note that there is a focus on China, the West’s whipping boy.

    But they themselves, the West and the USA in particular, are the main culprits in this global technological warfarism.

    We have never been persuaded that people even see this as war, by other means.

    Recently, an Iranian general was murdered through the deployment of technology and the absence of assassins.

    A few years back the Americans and Zionists deployed cyber capabilities to explode Iranian centrifuges.

    Russia has new generations of missiles capable of reaching and circumnavigating the globe before delivering its payload, in minutes from launching

    Donald Trump was marked by specious allegations of election help from Russia.

    We are in a new place. Unfortunately most of us still want to pretend that the world of yesterday could be transported into the morrow, if there is one.

    You are not wrong on so many numbers, but incomplete, others are just too simple. First , the Chinese do not have to bug us, we will volunteer any information they want.
    Second, the Chinese know it is cheaper and easier to change minds, than to imprison people, that is why the Confucian Societies are so successful. When governments offer scholarships etc it is soft diplomacy, espionage by another name.
    Remember when the president foolishly said the we will all be speaking Mandarin by 2030; why bug parliament when the autocrat, by intent or accident, is a tool of the Chinese.
    Third, China is not the only nation fighting for hearts and minds in little Barbados. I have said numerous times on BU that senior police, BDF and civil servants should be barred from attending parties or courses sponsored by the Canadians, Americans or Brits. It is elementary.
    In those cases, the espionage is in the content of the course, ie the military and policing values taught are not Barbadian, but American or Canadian or British.
    So, the measure of a good soldier or police has nothing to do with being a Barbadian, but with how well they have learned about these foreign values.
    At social gatherings, they often use the old pincher movement to get information, which quite often the best of our military and police would not know they are doing.
    Someone comes up and talks to you about X; he goes away and someone else comes up and talks about B; they both look innocuous, but when they put their notes together, a they do, after the party they have a better picture of what is going on.
    Then there is the honey trap which the Chinese use with abandon: beautiful young Chinese girl (or boy) comes up and tells you how special you are and, bang.
    Just imagine a middle-aged Bajan man confronted with a beautiful Chinese woman. @ Kammie, a vote in international fora is worth any number of young Chinese girls (or boys).

    Despite our own problems, we must never forget that we are part players on a larger stage. At times our interests and those of other players may coincide but we should always bear it in that larger countries pursue their own agenda.

    China’s genocidal repression of the Uighurs continued this year, with new information emerging on sterilization plans, the mass use of forced labor, and an ever-growing carceral system. The campaign is the grimmest part of Xi’s push toward a new ethnonationalism in China, exulting a Han triumphalism that looks to assimilate or exterminate China’s many minority cultures.

    This shift has involved new crackdowns in Tibet, as well as an assault on Mongolian culture that prompted mass protest and resulting repression. Party leaders now see that agenda as failed and dangerous.

    That fierce new nationalism is also visible on the diplomatic stage, where wolf warrior diplomats, led by foreign ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian, have switched from denial to outright attacks on anyone who dares criticize China’s actions. Officials have openly threatened Australia, deployed crude insults against foreign diplomats and politicians, and issued wild denials that the coronavirus started in China.

    China is to provide 4bn yuan ($530m; £261m) of cheap loans to Chinese firms investing in the Caribbean, says the state-run China Daily newspaper.
    As China continues its economic boom, the Caribbean is a growing source for its imports of raw materials such as aluminium oxide, nickel and sugar.

    China has been steadily increasing its global investments in recent years.

    Analysts say this is both to help quench its ever increasing thirst for oil and other raw materials, and also increase its global influence as its political power rises in tandem with its growing economic might.

    The China Daily article quoted vice premier Wu Yi, who is currently hosting the second China-Caribbean Economic and Trade Cooperation Forum in the south eastern city of Xiamen.

    The event is being attended by delegates from 13 Caribbean countries including Grenada, Jamaica, Haiti and St Lucia.

    “China will provide assistance without attaching any political strings, including providing 4bn yuan in low-interest loans and training for 2,000 technical personnel,” said Ms Wu.

    The Caribbean — sometimes described by experts as “too democratic and not poor enough” to merit sustained U.S. government attention — has been an afterthought for consecutive U.S. administrations, which have focused their attentions variously on security crises in the Middle East, East Asia and Europe.

    Meanwhile, China, largely unnoticed, has increased its economic, diplomatic, cultural, and security presence in the region.
    On March 22 at his Mar-a-Lago Florida resort, President Donald Trump held a rare meeting with the leaders of five Caribbean nations — Bahamas, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Jamaica and St. Lucia — to discuss trade, energy investment and security issues. It remains to be seen whether the high-profile summit will mark a period of sustained regional engagement or be a one-off for the administration.
    Ahead of the meeting the White House said one of its aims was to “counter China’s predatory economic practices.”
    “They discussed the importance of supporting a peaceful democratic transition in Venezuela, disaster resilience, opportunities for investment, and ongoing security cooperation,” said a White House spokesman, Hogan Gidley, after the meeting concluded, adding that a high-level delegation would be sent to the region in the next three months.

    Beijing’s direct foreign investment, government-backed loans and grants for infrastructure projects in the region are mostly benign. Still, there’s a worry among some Caribbean politicians and U.S. analysts that China is getting preferential access. And in a worst case scenario of confrontation with the United States, there is also fear of China taking possession of the regional infrastructure it has financed to pose a threat in America’s own backyard ???

    While the White House is focused on a trade war, Beijing has hardly skipped a beat with its global ambitions. Its investments and leadership in the Caribbean bring the Chinese presence to the U.S. doorstep in what could be another turf war in the growing rivalry between Beijing and Washington.

    , a well-known China hawk who also leads the Senate Foreign Relations subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere, says he is “very concerned” about China’s efforts to extend its influence into Latin American and the Caribbean, particularly as it concerns gaining access to strategic assets such as ports. The United States must do more to warn off its regional partners from doing business with Beijing, he says.

    “We keep an eye on it all the time,” Rubio tells CQ of China’s Caribbean port presence. “It’s a big problem. We’re focused on it.”

    The Chinese tale has been uneven to put it mildly.

    In Belize tens of thousand of passports were issued to Chinese citizens. With them they entered Canada immediately. Belize being a Commonwealth country with hithertofore non visa entrance into Canada.

    For the Canadians this criminal action of Belize represented a national security threat. But for the Belizean politicians millions were earned for the tens of thousands of passports sold.

    Tell us again the tale about a trojan horse.

    Belize is not alone. It keeps the real estate markets in at least 3 Canadian urban areas, increasing by 10%+ per annum. And BTW, the Iranians also carry Belize passports.

    We are not surprised. Anytime genuine national passports are known to be available like this they will attract the attentions of those in the intelligence agencies as a means of plotting intrigues. The Iranians are some of the most cleaver operators. And Canada has cold relations with them, already.

    The physiognomies of both Iranians and Chinese are not dissimilar to many Belizeans.

    On reflection, we think the Chinese were running some intelligence projects through Barbados as well, during the 80s and 90s.

    You would see all of the Chinese restaurants springing up, apparently doing little business. We came to know that their government was supporting all of these activities.

    Official reports additionally quoted the Chinese Premier, Li Keqiang, as saying that China is willing to enhance co-operation in infrastructure construction, energy, finance and agriculture in Trinidad and was willing to encourage Chinese companies to invest.
    What these developments and the gradual deepening of China’s relations with the Bahamas, Cuba, Jamaica, Guyana, Barbados, Suriname, and some of the islands of the Eastern Caribbean suggest, is that China is now poised to rapidly broaden and consolidate its regional economic and political role. Only Belize, St Lucia, St Kitts, Haiti and St Vincent largely continue to fall outside of its development reach as they continue to recognise Taiwan.

    This is all happening despite heavy-handed warnings in public and private from Washington.

    Canada,* Israelis who have done a lot of espionage consultancy for many Caribbean governments military. Its amazing when you attend diplomatic functions escpecially overseas and drinks start to flow its amazingwhat flows from the in gear brain that frees the lips.

    It does not matter how much in the past or now my communications are illegally intercepted I will always speak out against the ugly.

    Jamaica 🇯🇲 natural resources are natural gas and bauxite-alumina. Industry shifted Jamaica’s economy from sugar and bananas. They are recipients of Chinese Generosity.

    Trinidad & Tobago 🇹🇹 economy is highly dependent on its rich natural resources, including
    petroleum, natural gas
    and asphalt. The main resources are medium grade crude oil-and natural gas, which together account for 40% of GDP and 80% of exports. Covetousness qualifies them for Chinese welfare.

    Barbados has no natural resources..Definitely qualify as a recipient for Chinese generosity and good will ???

    US Treasury grants Venezuela approval
    WASHINGTON – The US Treasury Department yesterday issued a new licence allowing certain transactions with Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido despite US sanctions on the country, reaffirming Washington’s support for the politician as Venezuela’s legitimate leader.
    The licence, which replaces a similar previous one, also allows for certain transactions with Venezuela’s National Assembly and some others, effectively recognising the extension of the opposition-controlled National Assembly’s term by a year.
    The term was extended after the mainstream opposition boycotted a parliamentary election on December 6 handily won by President Nicolas Maduro’s ruling socialists that the opposition and most Western democracies said was neither free nor fair.
    Venezuela’s Supreme Court last week ruled that the move by the opposition-controlled National Assembly to extend its term an additional year was invalid, paving the way for allies of Maduro to take over the body this month.
    Washington in January 2019 recognised Venezuelan politician Guaido as the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) nation’s rightful leader and has ratcheted up sanctions and diplomatic pressure in the aftermath of Maduro’s 2018 re-election, widely described as fraudulent.
