After an asphalt pavement has been laid for about a decade, it is normal for rectangular shaped cracks to appear on the surface.  These cracks can be economically sealed to prevent further damage to the pavement.

Sometimes, a road is not designed for the actual amount of traffic, and the pavement can crack from overuse or fatigue.  These cracks can be straight cracks in line with the road, or shaped like the skin-pattern of alligators.  These cracks can also be economically sealed to prevent further damage.

If these cracks are not sealed, then when the wheels of vehicles go over the cracks, they can force powder sized particles out of the underlying base through the cracks, which appear as powder on the surface.  This signals that a pothole is in gestation.  If the embryonic pothole is not aborted by sealing the cracks, the road will give birth to a pothole.

Sometimes, small areas of the base layer, on which the asphalt layer is installed, is not compacted sufficiently.  The asphalt layer may depress or settle in that small area and develop a pattern of alligator-skin type cracks.  This is different from the fatigue cracks, which also have an alligator-skin pattern, but no settlement.

Sealing these settlement cracks is not effective.  The cracked asphalt should be removed, the weak base material should be compacted, and the cracked asphalt replaced with new.  If the weak base is not compacted, the pothole will reappear – like magic.  Only it is not magic.  It is simply the consequences of a badly repaired pothole.

POLITICAL PATCHES.

There are several other reasons why an asphalt layer cracks and weakens.  But we seem disinterested in such matters.  We are a caring people.  We cherish our pregnant roads, and joyously celebrate each new birth.  When we nurse, or drive over the pothole, we cause it to grow from a juvenile, to an adult crater.

Why don’t we seal the cracks to abort the potholes?  Why don’t we properly repair potholes that result from base failure?  The answer appears to be political.

Before a general or by election, the government normally hurriedly patches potholes very badly.  These political patches are known to only bring temporary relief.  They do not last long, and only guarantee that the pothole will get worse after the election.

The problem is that this time, these political patches are still being done, even after the election is over.  I understand the need to keep unskilled persons employed during this time.  However, why not simply train them to seal cracks, and permanently repair potholes?  The answer to that fundamental question, is blowing in the wind.

just highlighting the conflicts of interest that they think is so cute and not the unethical criminality that it really is, can’t stand that greedy, thiefing, racist indian woman Ram so this is not to defend her, but isn’t Ezra Alleyne also the government’s lawyer…so why would he go to court or represent on Ram’s behalf in a case against the government…as i said, just highlighting.

  2. “If she was what the blog master makes her out to be , those people would have left long time ago.”

your powers of analysis is totally inadequate, G4S workers have been unpaid and robbed by the millions of dollars annually for a very long time, mistreated and mentally fatigued, yet, it’s hunger caused them to speak out after so many years, so too hotel workers, so too domestics who were paid $60 dollars a week when they had 4 and 5 children to feed and raise, the docile mind only knows how to attack each other, not those who disenfranchise them, only each other, they are the perfect victims to be exploited and enslaved physically and otherwise..

The fundamental issue is not how popular Ms Ram is, or whether she was rude to ordinary Barbadians or not; the real issue is the abuse of state power.
How the state could compulsorily purchase private property, a tool for public good, only to sell it to a private developer is not explained, as is the custom in Barbados. By the way, before some people crawl out of the wood work, this is not a private/public project. It is a private development.
Then the arrogance of the state is compounded by the delay in payment. That is not just wrong, but dishonest. Gangsterism. (Unquote).
    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

How do you know that the ‘recently cleared’ property which was compulsory acquired has been sold?

If it has been sold to a private developer what has been done with proceeds from the sale?

Shouldn’t those proceeds be passed on to the previous owner(s) as a show of good faith and as an indication to the public that the Hyatt project is not a mere mirage?

Wouldn’t the refusal to settle with the previous owner represent a breach of that person’s Constitutional rights?

If this has not been done then your argument of State sponsored “Gangterism” is “Spot on”.

How then can Barbados brag on the international business scene about being a compliant jurisdiction in which to do business?

  4. Well I am defending her against a misuse of Barbados Labour Party Govt. power. A taking away of her Human rights.

  5. Mrs. Ram is a Bajan citizen, she ought not to treated this shabby way by a Govt. that shoud be defending the rights of its Citizens.

Displacing her in favour of Americans.

    Which Bajan Citizen is next????

    You?

    You?

    or you?

  6. Which AMERICAN Govt. would take away a piece of property on AMERICAN SOIL and give it to a Bajan???

    Which American Govt.???

  7. An aside

On this day in 1979 Sir Arthur Lewis was awarded the Nobel Prize for Economics and Google has a special “doodle” celebrating that fact.

Interestingly his wiki page states that he wanted to study Engineering but Gov’ts and businesses of the day didn’t employ Black engineers so engineering loss was economics gain.

Now that all has been revealed, no sane person would want to get trapped with gangsters, especially when there is a whole vibrant world out there to explore and you can avoid gangsterism in business.

If an American Govt. took away a piece of Land belonging to An American and give it to a Bajan, there would be an almighty out cry , ask Hyatt Hotel.

The recipients of such generosity would not be able build anything on it because their lives would be in danger.

But the people down here are too docile.

So the Barbados Labour Party and its leader now realised that that WHITE PEOPLE are taking out NIS, TAXES, and VAT purporting to pay them into the Govt. coffers but never doing so, just putting it in their pockets??????

They have all been exposed by Covid 19. Covid 19 the great leveller.

Now they are pretending to be broke. The Govt. must pay after they STOLE THE WORKERS MONEY. They are are some on this blog including the blog master who don’t want me to talk about this. ,,,ha, ha, ha ha.

These people have the money but if they can get the Govt. to pay from the public purse, which they believe is their own, they wont have to pay a cent from their money they stole would remain in their pockets ILLEGALLY.. They ought to be charged and drag before the Courts. Although the DPP might drop the charges on some flimsy excuse. BECAUSE THEY ARE WHITE.

“Comissiong to file Hyatt suit today

POLITICAL ACTIVIST David Comissiong will today follow through on a threat of civil action aimed at preventing the eventual construction of the Hyatt Centric hotel on the outskirts of Bridgetown.

In a press statement yesterday, the attorney said he had written an official letter to Attorney General Adriel Brathwaite and would file his official affidavit on the matter at the Supreme Court today at 1 p.m.

He is scheduled to host a press briefing immediately after filing his lawsuit, which is seeking a judicial review of Prime Minister Freundel Stuart’s decision to grant permission to businessman Mark Maloney to commence construction of the Hyatt property.

Stuart determined that an environmental impact assessment was not necessary to green-light the Hyatt project, but Comissiong is contending that one should be done, in addition to the staging of at least one town hall meeting, and consultation with people who live in and around the Bay Street, St Michael area where the hotel it to be built.”

    MARCH 22, 2017

  19. More news for you.

    “Comissiong can challenge Hyatt erection

THE SUPREME COURT yesterday dismissed an application by Prime Minister Freundel Stuart questioning David Comissiong’s right to challenge Government’s decision to authorise construction of the controversial Hyatt Hotel on Bay Street, St Michael.

As Minister responsible for Town and Country Planning, Stuart, through his attorney Hal Gollop, QC, had argued that since Commissiong was not a neighbouring landowner and had no direct financial interest, he had no right to involve himself in the matter and no right to bring a case calling into question the granting of permission to build the 15-storeyed hotel.

However, High Court judge Dr Sonia Richards ruled that the outspoken social activist and attorney did have the right to challenge the decision.”

We’re often encouraged by some BU contributors, to ask for an explanation, if we do not understand what a contributor wrote in his/her contribution.

In keeping with that advice, do you mind explaining exactly what point are you trying to make by copy and pasting David Comissiong filing law suits against Hyatt to BU and what does it have to do with Grenville Phillips II’s topic about potholes?

One of the worst things to happen in Barbados. An elected GOVT. that should be protecting citizens rights in the fore front of taking away citizens and giving them away.

We have an unfair Govt. who don’t care about anything but getting them selves in power.
Potholes is just a symptom of their disinterest of the people of the country and the country it self. In the run up to the 2018 elections they had a plaster for every sore in Barbados They were going to do everything different .

But now they are in Govt. they don’t give a damn about any body or anything.

things are just dragging on and on. Near two and years you would have to have an electron microscope to see what they have done. One of the LARGEST CABINETS in the history of the Caribbean and nothing done. Consultants GranMer and you still cant get anything done. Just hiding behind Covid 19.

And this was the Govt. that fooled the people that they cared.

But nary a word now from her.

    So true.

  29. @ Carson C. Cadogan

    Okay, thanks for the clarification.

However, if you’re fair, you’ll also admit Democratic Labour Party “supporters don’t act based on principles” as well. Both BLP and DLP administrations “don’t care about anything but getting them selves in power” and when “they are in Govt. they don’t give a damn about any body or anything.”

I’ll always maintain there aren’t any political, philosophical or ideological differences between the BLP and DLP. Just look how easily they switch and are accepted by both parties. Anthony Wood was the DLP’s rival because he was the BLP’s 2018 general election campaign manager. He and the BEES had a ‘falling out,’ which consequently led him to be accepted by the DLP as one of their main speakers for their St. George North by-election candidate, Floyd Reifer. Perhaps the DLP’s campaign hierarchy felt Wood washing the BEES ‘dirty laundry’ in public would have been advantageous to them and Reifer in the by-election.

Recently, George Connolly and Rodney Grant ‘parted ways’ with the DLP and were welcomed ‘with opened arms’ into the same BLP they cussed during the May 24, 2018 election campaign………. and whose policies they opposed during the past 2½ years, which they now apparently ‘had a change of heart’ and accepted.

But, I’ll agree with you that, after criticising the size of former PM Stuart’s Cabinet, Mottley created history by appointing the largest Cabinet ever in Barbados, under the guise of ‘many hands make light work.’ And, there are too many consultants.

As it relates to the lady you mentioned that was placing flags in potholes, do you know for a fact if she is indeed a BLP supporter? The reason I asked is people and their actions are somehow characterised according to which ‘party is in power.’

Surely because she was placing flags in potholes during the previous DLP’s tenure, as a DLP supporter, you would obviously deem her to be a BEE. However, if that same lady were to repeat her actions now, I’m sure you’ll try to convince Barbadians she’s not a DEM supporter, but a CONCERNED CITIZEN.

Do not forget he was remanded in prison. Is this fair treatment, given his position in the gun club, or is he being punished for who he is? The court itself accepted he was not a serous threat, ie in plain English, he is not a gangster or gun dealer.

  33. Now that all the smoke is being cleared and the huff and puff concerning the G4S workers is simmering down
There is ongoing news of The company being in negotiation for sale with two other competitors one name Allied Universal and GardaWorld
If this sale come about can it become a huge pot hole which can affect the Mottley smoke and Mirror agreement with the previous owners and if so did not govt and Union take such into consideration before giving the workers hope of G4S making changes to accommodate what the workers expected for a “supposedly” better wage change
I suspect that both Union and Mottley knew all along but decided to rush forward under the guise of resolution for the workers rather than govt having to face the embarrassment of further strike action
This story will not go away as quick as govt wants all to believe in my mind the G4S workers like the govt workers would be thrown under the bus by Mottley
As OSA said Mia policies are founded on gimmicks and not guided by principles

  34. @ Mariposa

You are a bit behind the times. The sales to Allied Universal has been agreed. There will be no regulatory issues and what is now ongoing is the checking of the books to see if G4S is the company it claims to be. That is normally a formality, but remember Autonomy and Hewlett. I believe that issue is still going through the courts.
What is missing is a local bid for the Barbados business. If they do not know what to do why don’t they seek advice?

  35. Hal i read in the local news that there was no finality of the sale

  40. @ Carson

I do not want to criticise the journalists, although some can be very obdurate; the real problem are the publishers who simply want to make lots of money without spending any on training their staff.
The answer is simple: send one of the current staff to be trained in finance and economics; or employ a young graduate and send them to train in journalism.

  41. @HA

I bear no malice towards Mr. Arthur and he should be thankful that the justice system worked to his advantage; however, as you pointed out he is a member of a gun club and should be knowledgeable of the laws that govern the illegal possession of ammunition.

A casual search of those sentenced for ammunition possession in the local Press would reveal that the overwhelming majority were sentenced to prison time regardless of the quantity found and/or criminal affiliation. in my view Mr. Arthur received a light sentence, is there a disparity in punishment depending on status? People more knowledgeable than I can answer that question.

  42. ….and in my opinion should be thankful ….

  48. @ Mariposa

What are t he economics of putting a person on trial for the theft of a 65cents loaf of bread, and then jailing him for a year? Clearly the imposition of such a sentence goes beyond punishment for the theft.
I suggest it goes right to the heart of who the people responsible are: a vengeful, angry, spiteful, warped, bitter set of people disappointed with their working class origins and viciously want to exterminate – or isolate – those they think threaten to bring them down. It is the Bajan Condition.
There is not a single acceptable, legitimate explanation for this. Do we have a sentencing council? Do our magistrates and judges learn sentencing theory?
