Submitted by Grenville Phillips

There have been several analyses of the recent by-election by persons who were not candidates. It is important for the historical record, that a candidate also do an analysis.

All of the third party candidates expressed confidence that they would do well, myself included. We assumed that when persons said that we had their support, it meant that they would vote for us. That assumption was tested on election day and decisively proven false.

We all had similar access to the voters, the news media, and social media. All parties ran accomplished candidates, and offered plans to benefit the constituency. The BLP and DLP found a way to convert their support into votes. The third parties evidently did not.

The election results proved that the people generally voted for their political party, or did not vote at all. The question is, in a by-election where voters do not have to vote for their party’s interest, why would they still put their party’s interest above their own? It is this problem that third parties need to solve to become viable.

THE PROBLEM.

Third parties do not need to look for better messages, better candidates, better access to the media, or better platforms. They do not need to spend more time in the community, do more projects in the community, or attend more events in the community. All of that was tested in the recent by-election and proven false.

So, the question remains, why do Barbadian voters put the interests of their political party above their own? We offered full-time well-paid employment to all desperately unemployed persons in St George North. Yet, they voted to remain unemployed. We offered prosperity to every desperate family in St George North. Still, they voted to remain house poor or working poor.

We offered to permanently or sustainably address: road maintenance, dilapidated housing, lack of water, construction disputes, crop thefts, school graduates with no prospects, asthma, illegal dumping, and hunger in St George North. The people voted for their desperate conditions to remain unchanged.

What would cause a parent to elevate her political party’s interests above that of her children? Why would a pastor elevate his political party’s interest above that of the congregation? Why would homeowners, who may be slightly better off, vote to keep their neighbours in poverty?

THE ANSWER.

The answer appears to be that they are not desperate enough. The unemployed are still eating. The families still have places to stay. The hospital’s asthma bay remains open. The supermarkets import food. Children earn money by selling drugs or prostituting themselves. They are not desperate enough to want their circumstances changed.

Barbados’ Constitution states that we acknowledge the supremacy of God. The Bible teaches that people under God’s care will always be able to bear their circumstances, or have a way to escape them. Third party’s are only likely to become viable in Barbados, if Barbadians are faced with what is truly unbearable. That is highly unlikely with God on our side.

Since our independence, both BLP and DLP administrations have governed us in a way that kept our most desperate circumstances bearable. Third parties can only be viable in Barbados, if the government, representing the people, formally rejects the supremacy of God. Since that is unlikely, I am no longer in elective politics.

It’s not about your God. The decadent BLPDLP will only be defeated with a sustained , progressive political activity.
You really think that people who jump to the skies when their garbage is picked up; a new bus is bought or they see a water truck every two weeks, going to vote for new parties just so?
The people are in political bondage and the BLPDLP knows that every five years ,they can get on a platform, employ some calypsonian or gospel artistes and entertain them.
Just read BU and see how eager they are to cuss anybody who oppose their political masters. Anytime the BLPDLP poison the kool aid everyone of them dead.
Even the NDP paid the price of not understanding or failing to implement sustained , progressive , political activity.
As for you and Solutions, you never even started.

  3. As researchers, may we advise you that you are too close to this situation and are therefore guided by whole ranges of biases.

Would it not be infinitely better to have a clear and unbiased mind to interrogate your continuing dismal showings.

See this like how a medical doctor should endeavour not prescribing himself medication. Or a drug baron getting high on his own supply.

The central basis of your argument rests of the seeming inability of the people of saint george north, electorate, to differentiate between party interests or affiliation from their personal interests, needs or wants.

Has it not occurred to you that there maybe no differences in their perceptions? That the people of saint george north percieve no third party as having the ability to respond to any of their needs, and rightly so?
What you have not learnt is that the only viable way a socalled third party can enter a duopolistic political culture is by destroying, subsuming one or both of the major parties?

It is you, Phillips, not the constituents of Saint George North who as the manager of your party’s campaign that is be blamed as all managements systems demand when there is a calamitous failure like you led your socalled party to recently.

With humility, may we suggest that the great Robert Nesta Marley was misguided on this one occasion by deifying Afrikan-American soldiers who were primarily deployed to commit genocide against the Indegenous peoples of Turtle Island.

This act will remain too painful.

  5. Given Grenvilles departure from active politics it will be for others to take the baton and run with it. Again he garnered the third highest votes if only 90 (2%) of the vote.

  6. We have no respect for what this White man”s imposed god says, regardless to what is wrtten in any of your constitutiions.

The notion of a constitution itself is a product of the events of 1648.

Those events were centrally aimed at removing that sovereignty which your book says every human possesses.

It may be better for you to seek “enlightenment” in the pews of the People’s Cathedral than pretending that some political heaven lies elsewhere. And that you are the only One capable of parting the Red Sea.

So too does the American currency acknowledge the Supremacy of God.

“In God We Trust”! Is it not so for the American people and even the people of SGN?

Stop putting ‘God’ into politics or the Devil will defeat ‘him’!

David how can we accord Grenville or any third party any ‘achievement’ for getting the third highest share of votes in a situation where they lost badly but in the US election dismiss the fact that the losing candidate there gained the second highest tally of votes, ever!

I am NOT taking this to a US politics debate… my point is simple bro: we CANNOT offer such biased geographic analysis if we really want to be SERIOUS about UNDERSTANDING this thing called politics!

Let me say that I am acquaintanced with Phillips, know members of his family and actually like the fellow from his past achievements but his political odyssey and that piece above is pure unaduturated NONSENSE.

None of it makes a modicum of sense to me … beyond his need for self gratification (actualization in Maslow speak)…. Let’s be precise ….

He said: “All of the third party candidates expressed confidence that they would do well, myself included. We assumed that when persons said that we had their support, it meant that they would vote for us. That assumption was tested on election day and decisively proven false.”

Is he having a laff at us here! Seriously he offers that a voter’s earnest comment that he or she is supporting you as a candidate always ‘means that they will vote for you’…. SERIOUSLY!

He then offered a gem … “The BLP and DLP found a way to convert their support into votes. The third parties evidently did not.[…] The election results proved that the people generally voted for their political party, or did not vote at all. The question is, in a by-election where voters do not have to vote for their party’s interest, why would they still put their party’s interest above their own? It is this problem that third parties need to solve to become viable.” again, SERIOUSLY!

Can Phillips explain what in heaven’s name his 3rd party would ACTUALLY do for voters that would make them shift away meaningfully from the ruling party government or in fact the supposed de facto govt in-waiting!

His remarks about jobs etc is absurdly WISHFUL thinking and CANNOT be taken SERIOUSLY.

So to you Grenville… if YOU could offer “full-time well-paid employment to all desperately unemployed persons in St George North” or “prosperity to every desperate family in St George North” then you would have done that already a thousand times over in your career to date.

You would not only be a chartered engineer and college president but a successful serial entrepreneur and ingenious investment guru in the mould of a ‘Shark Tank’ investor with many successful small businesses operated by your trained/invested with owners … thus you would have no problem convincing St. Georgians or Bajans generally of what you could achieve for them … rather you come over as a political ‘ingenue’ totally unsophisticated and virginal to the realities around you!

You may be a great guy in your personal space but conflating your personal success with wild promises to a wide variety of personalities many of whom will not have your passionate motivations is – respectfully noted – puerile stupidness!

    Please get real!

  15. Anybody who proffers that some type of religious indoctrination is a necessary if insufficient precondition for political mobilization reminds us of Jim Jones and should be shot on sight.

  16. @William

The JW is a fringe religion in Barbados. We are discussing Barbados right?

  17. @Dee Word

You should understand this analogy given your rabid interest in US politics. Did a Jesse Jackson help to pave the way and inspire a Barack Obama for example to run for president? You should be able to connect the dots.

  18. @ dpD

The unfortunate reality is, the BLP & DLP started with votes, while the ‘third parties’ started at zero.

People won’t immediately support a ‘third party.’ Developing them requires lots of patience, commitment, marketing/promotion and financial support. As such, Grenville II should have been in ‘for the long haul.’

However, he presented some good ideas, but fell short when he did not offer any explanation on how they would have been implemented or how he would have achieved his objectives.

For example, one of SB’s election promises was to train secondary school graduates of St. George North, within 6 weeks and at no cost to them, how to become employable and/or entrepreneurs, “regardless of how well or poorly they did at secondary school.”
How would he be able to teach in 6 weeks, the students were unable to learn in 6 years at school?

How would he go about training people how to start and grow a profitable business in 8 weeks, without start-up money?

Or, train all unemployed St George North residents, who want to learn to safely construct a house, in TWO (2) weeks, when apprenticeships takes over 3 or more years to complete, while the Polytechnic’s training programs for skilled artisans are 2 years?

If the duration pf training is taken into consideration, we can’t blame people if they believe those plans were election gimmicks.

  21. Re The Jehovah Witness are usually maligned and people shut up their houses and don’t answer them when they knock.

ON THE BASIS OF THE CLEAR TEACHING OF 2 JOHN 6-11 COPIED BELOW BAJANS ARE JUSTLY CORRECT IN THUS IGNORING THIS ARIAN CULT, WHICH IS WELL DESCRIBED AND DISCUSSED IN LITERATURE SUCH AS THE KINGDOM OF THE CULTS. AT LEAST MOST BAJANS KNOW SOMEHOW THAT JW’S & MORMONS ARE SERIOUS CULTS

6 And this is love, that we walk after his commandments. This is the commandment, That, as ye have heard from the beginning, ye should walk in it.
7 For many deceivers are entered into the world, who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist.
8 Look to yourselves, that we lose not those things which we have wrought, but that we receive a full reward.
9 Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son.
10 If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither bid him God speed:
11 For he that biddeth him God speed is partaker of his evil deeds.

They even call them “ Jehovah Wickedness”.
THAT TERM IS BOTH LUDICROUS AND BLASPHEMOUS, BUT THEN BAJANS ARE KNOW TO CURSE USING JOHN 11:33 ….JESUS WEPT!

    That has never stopped them.
INDEED. THIS IS TO BE EXPECTED AS THE DEVIL AND HIS SURROGATES AND ASSIGNS (John 8:44) WILL CONTINUE UNTIL THE DEMISE OF THE FALSE CHURCH AS DESCRIBED IN REVELATION 17.

That’s what it takes when you believe in what you’re doing.
ACTUALLY, THEY CONTINUE IN THE STRENGTH AND GUIDANCE OF THEIR FATHER, THE DEVIL WHO IS A LIAR FROM THE BEGINNING (John 8:44). THE DEVIL ENABLES AND EMPOWERS THESE COUNTERFEITERS, AS THAT IS HIS MODUS OPERANDI.

RE how effective has been the penetration of that religion in Barbados and the world?
DAVID, THE JW’S UNIVERSAL PENETRATION IS NOW IN DECLINE

RE have you ever attended a Jehovah Witness convention in your country ?
WHY WOULD ANY ONE IN THEIR RIGHT MIND DO THIS? THEY WRONGLY DIVIDE THE WORD OF TRUTH, ESPECIALLY WHEN IT COMES TO THE DOCTINE OF THE SON OF GOD (SORTERIOLOGY ) FOR ONE THING EVEN THEIR MUSIC IS MORBID AND DULL DOUR AND DISGUSTING
    .
Do you know anything about the Jehovah Witness worldwide organization ?
ANYONE WHO DOES NOT KNOW SHOULD READ THE KINGDOM OF THE CULTS, OR WATCH THE VERY INFORMATIVE VIDEOS ABOUT THEM ON THE INTERNET.

RE The Jehovah Witness is a well established entity in your country.
SO WHAT? THE PREVALENCE OF MURDER IS ALSO WELL ESTABLISHED, AS WELL AS BIBLE ILLITERACY. THERE IS A FORM OF GODLINESS, WHILE DENYING THE POWER THEREOF AS TAUGHT IN

  26. All of the newer political parties need to form a coalition. It is the only meaningful was to move forward. The last General election and recent Bi-election are lessons. The same measures cannot be repeated in the next General Election with expectations of obtaining different results.
The question is can some overcome their egos to make this a reality?

  27. What the smaller political parties need are policies that are appealing to the people. Conservative claptrap can only get us to far.

  30. Mr Philips,
Whereas I crushed your puerile pablum on the Word, I percieve that you are a decent and righteous and well meaning man, with much to offer. You should probably just seek to make “your calling and election sure” and just continue to be “steadfast and abounding in the work of the Lord” and desist your practice of throwing “your pearls to the swine.” It is pointless.

Peace another – maybe dictator/ bully
Hal another – maybe need to see the members of your party
John2 another – maybe all the above.

But feel free to put the blame where you prefer.

  33. @ Hal Agreed. They have time if they form a coalition to create that agenda. Part of the focus must be the youth.

  34. Has anyone thought that Ms. Moore’s installment may be in some way related to the new medical marijuana Industry?

  35. @ Heather

We are trapped in an historical vice of personality politics and the treatment of differences in policy as something foreign, not for us. Even now, a couple weeks after a by-election, few can state what the policy differences are between the DLP and BLP.
For 2.5 years we have had a government led by Mottley which has introduced all kinds of policies, some bad and others much worse, yet the DLP has remained totally silent on those.
We have had the strange case of young Kemar Stuart, and even then the DLP has remained silent. The problem with this is that it makes the ordinariness of Mottley and her so-called strategists look as if they have some masterplan.
It also exposes the inherent conservatism and suspicions of the Barbadian society, a minefield for anyone entering the Bajan public space.
A serious debate must take place outside the conventional political parties and the narrow confines of academia and their job-conscious adherents.
Just look at the attempt to discuss racism on a Bajan blog and the push back you are getting. No doubt other Caribbean people think we are strange.

  38. Has it ever been publicly released, or does anyone happen to know how many amplification cycles the official Barbados Covid-19 test centre, Best-dos Santos Laboratry, run their Covid-19 PCR tests through to get their their result? Asking for a friend.

Asymptomatic ‘Casedemic’ Is a Perpetuation of Needless Fear
Analysis by Dr. Joseph Mercola – Fact Checked

…….many if not most laboratories amplify the RNA collected far too many times, which results in healthy people testing “positive.” To understand why the false positive rate for PCR tests is so high, you need to understand how the test works.(2)

The video above explains how the PCR test works and how we are interpreting results incorrectly. In summary, the PCR swab collects RNA from your nasal cavity. This RNA is then reverse transcribed into DNA. However, because the genetic snippets are so tiny, they must be amplified to become discernible.

Each round of amplification is called a cycle, and the number of amplification cycles used by any given test or lab is called a cycle threshold. Amplification over 35 cycles is considered unreliable and scientifically unjustified. Some experts say nothing above 30 cycles should be used,(3) yet Drosten tests and tests recommended by the World Health Organization are set to 45 cycles.(4,5,6)

When you go above 30 cycles, even insignificant sequences of viral DNA end up being magnified to the point that the test reads positive even if your viral load is extremely low or the virus is inactive and poses no threat to you or anyone else.

    SNIP

Even Dr. Anthony Fauci has admitted that the PCR test is useless and misleading when run at “35 cycles or higher.”(22) He made this comment in a July 16, 2020, “This Week in Virology” podcast:(23)

“If you get a cycle threshold of 35 or more … the chances of it being replication-confident are minuscule … You almost never can culture a virus from a 37 threshold cycle … [or] even 36 …

That then begs the question, why is the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommending the test be run at a CT of 40?(24) Why are Drosten tests and tests recommended by the World Health Organization set to 45 cycles?

  43. Portuguese Court Rules PCR Tests As Unreliable & Unlawful To Quarantine People

    November 18, 2020

    by GreatGameIndia

A Portuguese appeals court has ruled that PCR tests are unreliable and that it is unlawful to quarantine people based solely on a PCR test.

The court stated, the test’s reliability depends on the number of cycles used and the viral load present. Citing Jaafar et al. 2020, the court concludes that:

“if someone is tested by PCR as positive when a threshold of 35 cycles or higher is used (as is the rule in most laboratories in Europe and the US), the probability that said person is infected is less than 3%, and the probability that said result is a false positive is 97%.”

The court further notes that the cycle threshold used for the PCR tests currently being made in Portugal is unknown.

The threshold cycles used in PCR tests in India is between 37 and 40, which makes the reliability of the PCR test less than 3% and the false positive rate as high as 97%.
