In the Friday Nation newspaper of October 23, 2020 Commissioner of Police Tyrone Griffith AGAIN revealed to the public that “guns are still coming”. His comment comes in response to public concerns about gun crime. The COP remains adamant that although there has been a tightening of the security at the Barbados Port, unfortunately it has not arrested the problem. The blogmaster understands that a system is only as good as the integrity of the operators of said system. We also have other ports of entry where the security is questionable and there is the additional headache that Barbados is an island with many many areas that allow those willing to take the risk to land contraband. This is an enforcement issue BUT there is the systemic issue we have also failed as a society to even scratch the service..

    Tell me. Why should Barbadians be continuing a Middle Age custom and paying tributes of all the earn to lords?

    Why is a third or half of what they earn going to institutions that merely export the money. Is this a Lord / Peasant relationship?

    How can a an individual or country get wealthy, having to pay tributes of all earnings to others?

    Are we still indentured servants?

    Think about it.

    Yes, I prefer to support Black owned businesses, but it does not mean I have to accept crap.

    How do you suggest we deal with Richard Hoad and his column?

    Do we continue buying the ‘Weekend Nation’ because the company is “perhaps the most successful Black enterprise since Independence,” ……… and IGNORE the column, or do we express our displeasure by making management aware we’re offended by it?

    If we agree on the former, ignoring the column won’t make it ‘disappear.’ But, if we agree on the latter, how do we go about sending a clear and strong message to management that Hoad’s column is offensive and will not be tolerated…………… protests or boycotts?

    Do we arm ourselves with placards and stage protest action outside the newspaper’s Fontabelle office and Hoad’s home…… every Friday, or do we stop buying the paper and withhold our advertisements UNTIL Hoad’s column ‘is a thing of the past?’

    Stopped buying the Weekend Nation to protest Richard Hoad’s offensive “Stand your Ground” column in which he, without naming names, identified more with George Zimmerman than Trayvon Martin. I buy the Sunday Sun and read Adrian Greene instead.

    I wonder if Richard Hoad is related to that Hoad girl I went to school with who attempted to berate me for being that disrespectful to the queen of England.

    My suggestion is read the column or don’t read it.I have written at least three letters over the years and they were never published regarding Hoad . Also discovered that his column is perhaps one of the most popular. I would not encourage people to pull ads because of Hoad. That is counterproductive because they are supporting the Nation .
    I have written in the press about comments made by Bizzy and his brother COW as well. I was cussed by whits and blacks . I always say if the blacks rise up that the whites only have to hide and wait because some of us see only white and that’s their right.
    I used to buy every single paper and I have been subscribing to the Nation from day one to this morning. The only reason I don’t subscribe to the Advocate is its technical glitches. I subscribe to another three Caribbean papers. I dont see any sense in boycotting a paper because of Hoad or anybody. The Nation is not the best paper right now in my opinion, Barbados Today is better and that is free.
    I don’t get too hyped when I hear about supporting black businesses because we have always supported each other.
    If after nearly sixty years of Independence, we still scraping the bottom of the economic barrel all we need do is to be honest about who has been leading us and who people cuss each other every day on this blog for!

    It is a bit of a contradiction to talk about good newspapers and mention the current Nation and Barbados Today. It is like comparing CBC with CNBC, BBC, CNN or Bloomberg. Neither would qualify as a good local paper in the UK. Training, dear boy.
    A slight diversion, old chap. Just got some bad news about the rate of VD (what is now called sexually transmitted disease) in the Caribbean. Syphilis seems to be on the rise. The UK is monitoring it re tourism.

    Falling standards rare now acceptable. On the VD thing, I have not heard or read anything. However with COVID , a lot of news and information is being suppressed through the regions. I’ll do some digging.

    I am sure I have mentioned this before. Public Health England monitors the countries, cities, town and clubs that UK citizens get venereal diseases. They can tell you the nightclubs were the problem is rife.
    They are now seeing a rise in the number of cases in syphilis contracted by Brits in the Caribbean. Jamaica seems to be the hot spot.

    Apparently, you seem to believe there are specific ‘sets of rules’ we all should follow when dealing with racism. You mentioned having written at least three letters over the years regarding Hoad, which were never published. Obviously, you did not achieve your intended objectives. What were your next options, other than “suggesting (we) read the column or don’t read it?”

    Yesterday, you wrote, “Once more you are telling me to accept racism against our people.” I DID NOT tell you THEN nor am I telling you NOW.
    Coincidentally, you also mentioned you “dont see any sense in boycotting a paper because of Hoad or anybody,” while suggesting that form of protest is “counterproductive,” ………. and proudly declared having subscribed “to the Nation from day one to this morning.” That, my friend, is a ‘cop out.’ In MY opinion, you’ve essentially ‘thrown your hands in the air’ and ACCEPTED Hoad’s racism.

    As an avid follower of the civil rights and Black power movements, I’m sure you’re aware of the Rosa Parks incident that led to the ‘Montgomery Bus Boycott,’ which ended with a Supreme Court ruling declaring the unconstitutionality of segregation on public transit systems. Although the issues relating to Parks and Hoad are different, the underlying circumstances of racism are similar.
    Supposed those African Americans had similarly opined, they didn’t see the sense of boycotting the buses because of the rules and to do so, would be counterproductive?

    I won’t go as far as advocating for the CLOSURE of the Nation, but, we need to send a clear and strong message to its management that we’re no longer willing to tolerate Hoad’s offensive columns. Even if requires refusing to buy the paper and withholding our advertisements UNTIL his column ‘is a thing of the past.’

    WARU is correct….. as proven by your actions….. we must “stop doing things halfway or THEY WILL NEVER STOP.” And, although I found her other comment re “stop with the house negro nostalgic shite that WILL NEVER GET YOU ANYWHERE” to be amusing, it’s true as well.

    It’s clear we don’t agree with each other’s opinions on this issue. Does that make either of us right or wrong?

    Want to break crime? Start at the top AND the bottom.

    Social reengineering is necessary. The financial system, the education system, must both be relevant.

    Instead of relying on traditional guilt teachings with respect to life and religion, teach practical and relevant life choices and lifestyle.

    Give vocations the same level of importance as traditional academia. I say traditional academia, as all learning is academic, even if it is not so titled.

    Reengineer the financial system to ensure that people actually have a chance in life, instead of, as I noted above, being indentured to a financial institutions for the majority of their lives. That is a kicker and mental fraud.

    Muammar Gaddafi ensured that all young married couples has a place to live. He implemented a great water plan, bringing water to the majority of the country, something that not even the great USA can do, as California, Colorado, Oregon, burn with lack of water.

    Barbados needs to reassess housing choices and principles, ensure that investment in water resources is properly implemented without corruption.

    A complete and detailed crackdown on those who benefit from the importation of illegal drugs needs to be implemented. I do not mean the fellow on the beach selling a little bit. I mean the importers.

    Either that or simply legalise all and have the pharmacies distribute, it will remove the black market, the corruption and the government will get taxes.

    You cannot eliminate crime without eliminating the raison d’etre and that is money.

    Implement social training and thinking in every primary school, such that practical life choices are made, instead of the mumbo jumbo that has been taught, re false religious propaganda, designed to deeply embed guilt thinking and inferiority in every child. That traditional method is a tool of the coloniser and control megalomaniac.

    Teach about cultures, the Africans, the Romans, the Greeks, the Native Americans and ALL religions.

    Yes, to primary school children and early secondary. Instead of beating them and making them rote learn guilt parameters.

    Reimplement the apprentice route to a skill as an urgency. Ensure that NO ONE is homeless. No ONE.

    Do not mind that rubbish about resources. There are ample resources to house every single person.

    Reengineer your thinking as to what is important in a society.

    I once had a scruffy man cuss me for brushing him off. Apparently, he didn’t need me to pay him any mind because he “does deal with white women, man”.

    I was happy the superior white women were filling that undesirable slot.

    I also knew of a young man who tied his parents up and left them on the floor one Xmas day. Some white woman from England came, met him and took him back with her. Maybe she’s into bondage.

    That said, it is done in other echelons of society, where Bajan girls go to Canada or UK and get married, set up a new life. A lot of Bajan girls marry Brits. Trini girls too.

    First , let me say that I am one of @WARU biggest fans on BU. We seek the same solutions.
    Perhaps my devotion to the origins of the Nation , does entail some nostalgia. However , I have seen friendships go spur because somebody supports Trump. My position: No little semi-educated white boy can make me lose a friend.
    I have the same position toward Hoad. I will not stop reading the Nation because of Hoad neither would I boycott or protest in front the Nation because of Hoad. Furthermore, the irony is that many Bajan Blacks believe in Lowdown. A few short years ago , COW Williams made some very derogatory statements about his Black workers. This stupid Bajan living overseas, took up his pen and went after COW in the Nation. Bajans on the rock phoned, Whats Up , text and emailed me and praised me for going after COW. Not one of them wrote a single word to the Nation. There was not one comment on Brasstacks that I heard. However, a Black Prime Minister was often ridiculed for his physical features. On this same blog a Black man is almost every day called the “ ugly man from England” . I have never cop out but I know very clearly with whom I deal. Hoad has no power over me .
    The famous E L C who was white and wrote for decades had the same views of Hoad but he put them differently. I never stopped reading the Advocate or Daily News. The Advocate was owned by one Lord Thompson and the Daily news apparently had white investors.
    Now, I must stop reading the Nation but bright and early tomorrow morning, I buying a car from whom; building material from whom; fancy brandy from whom; at whose hotel bars and restaurants having fancy dinners ??
    As for Rosa Parks, I understand your point. But I heard on a tape my Comrade Trevor Prescod in his support for Toni Moore equating her with Margaret Tubman. Strange things happen in my country and for donkey years those of us who genuinely put everything on the line know the outcome.
    That’s why I am a WARU fan. No White man going to make me stop supporting a newspaper that was started by Al Gilles, Trevor Clarke , Harold Hoyte and other Black poor Black people like me . So I take away a few bucks from the Nation and then go and buy all the imported ice cream and boast about cruising and spending billions with the same people who look like Hoad and think like Hoad.
    There has to be a bigger picture here my brother.

    Toni Moore as Margaret (Harriett) Tubman is stretching interpretations a bit far. It is one of the reasons why the people are confused and the president is an expert at this.
    Do Barbadian politicians ever say no to an opportunity? There is no disgrace in refusing an offer. The late Trevor ‘Job’ Clarke went to his grave battling the people who he alleged had taken his share of the Nation off him.
    I also suggest that you return to the press statements made by the Nation when the Trinidadians moved in on them. Hoyte and his supporter tried to sell it as a merger, etc. I wrote in my Notes that the Trinis had taken over when I got a email from Hoyte asking me to ease off until the deal had been done.
    One fan, still active in Barbados politics, wrote to me and screamed she had lots of respect for me until I wrote the Trinis were taking over. Since then she has not apologised and has moved on.
    By the way, Vonda Pile was Trevor’s lawyer in his battle with the Nation; she also was provided with evidence that purported to say that Gollop had not qualified as a solicitor in England and Wales. He took part one of the solicitors’ exams, but failed to take part two.
    Trevor’s case was before the courts for about 20 years.
    A man, remanded for four years on a rape charge, has just been acquitted. Is that justice? Barbados is a failed state. Maybe we are getting lessons in civility from Rwanda.

    i remember those days, for the brief time i knew some things, but as many know, some type of crab like play happened there and others were disenfranchised, as a government mouth piece the newpaper is useless anyway and does not serve the needs of the BLACK POPULATION WHO KEEP IT IN BUSINESS…as long as its role is primarily to enable racists to disparage Black people and run propaganda from the government of the day, it’s better off out of business.

    they are yet to cover governent corruption, lawyer thefts, minority thefts from the black population….they are not on par with international newpapers and the service they provide to educate the people and make significant changes. to benefit the people…

    Seems simple enough to do. I have always thought so.

    We must begin at the very beginning. It’s still a very good place to start.

    “Free your mind and the rest will follow.”

    Our problems begin in our minds. They can be solved once we are made aware of them and take the necessary steps in a co-ordinated and sustained manner. It calls for an overarching vision and an understanding of the connected parts of our society and economy. It really is not that complex if the powers that be really want it.

    Right now is an opportune time for our rebirth. Or we could just curl up and die!

    You keep missing the point. All I’m saying [a] could be done UNTIL [b] is achieved. ‘UNTIL’ is the key word here.

    However, it seems as though you’re ‘saying’ it does not make any sense protesting against Hoad, because “his column is perhaps one of the most popular” and “the newspaper was started by poor Black people like you.” If we do, tomorrow, we would purchase cars, building materials, fancy brandy and food and beverages, from establishments most likely owned by “the same people who look and think like him.”

    It doesn’t matter how you ‘sugar coat’ it, that, my friend, is a ‘cop out.’

    But, how about buying a car from QV Motors, Bargain Motors Inc. or MJA Car Services? We could purchase our building materials from Barbados Lumber Company Ltd. and fancy brandy from either Eddie’s, Jordan’s, Popular Discounts, Carlton, Channell’s or Cherish. You also asked, “at whose hotel bars and restaurants having fancy dinners??” What’s wrong with ‘wining and dining’ at Golden Sands Hotel?

    Anyhow, enough of that. Although I agree with some of your opinions, it does not mean I’ll disrespect those opinions I disagree with.

    There is one little item that always catches my attention.

    How come we are aware that sex tourism is part of the industry in Asia, but always seem surprisee when it appears to rear its ugly head in the Caribbean.

    More interested in an explanation for the increase than in the actual story
