In the children’s hymn “There’s A Friend For Little
Children”, one of the verses says

There’s a crown for little children
Above the bright blue sky,
And all who look for Jesus
Shall wear it by and by;
A crown of brightest glory,
Which He will then bestow
On those who found his favor
And loved His Name below.

  1. There’s a song for little children
    Above the bright blue sky,
A song that will not weary,
    Though sung continually;
    A song which even angels
    Can never, never sing
They know not Christ as Savior,
    But worship Him as King.

    This verse obviously refers to the “new song” referred to in Revelation 5:9 thus…. And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation;

By a new song is either to be understood as an excellent song (for new songs were usually most valued,) or new as to the matter of it. One commenter posits that it is a song of a completely new genre.

Victorinus suggests that the song was new because ““It is a new thing that the Son of God should become man. It is a new thing to ascend into the heavens with a body. It is a new thing to give remission of sins to men. . It is a new thing for men to be sealed with the Holy Spirit. It is a new thing to receive the priesthood of sacred observance, and to look for a kingdom of unbounded promise.

The song writer notes that this new song “will not weary, though sung continually,”as is the case with most songs. Furthermore, the fact that it is a song which even angels can never, never sing since they do not know Christ as Savior, as is taught clearly in 1 Peter 1:10-12.

10 Of which salvation the prophets have enquired and searched diligently, who prophesied of the grace that should come unto you:
11 Searching what, or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify, when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow.
12 Unto whom it was revealed, that not unto themselves, but unto us they did minister the things, which are now reported unto you by them that have preached the gospel unto you with the Holy Ghost sent down from heaven; which things the angels desire to look into.

  2. Another verse states
There’s a robe for little children
    Above the bright blue sky,
And a harp of sweetest music,
    And palms of victory.
    All, all above is treasured,
    And found in Christ alone:

With respect to the robe, the song writer is obviously referring to revelation 19:7-8… Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honour to him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready. And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white: for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints.
In verse 14 of this chapter, we read … And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean.
With respect to the harp, the song writer is clearly referring to Revelation 5:8,
And when he had taken the scroll, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb, each holding a harp, and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints.

wHEN YOU GET TO KNOW THE WORD WELL, YOU FIND THAT THE AUTHOR OF THESE HYMNS OFTEN OBVIOUSLY KNEW THE WORD VERY WELL. I GUESS THEY DID NOT HAVE THE MANY DISTRACTIONS THAT WE HAVE TODAY

RE We should treasure all these gifts.
    INDEED!
EVEN THOUGH WE HAVE NOT YET RECEIVED THEM, THE PROMISES ARE SURE AND THE PROSPECTS ARE AMAZING

ONE OF THE HYMNS I LOVE TO REFLECT ON IS ” ONCE, ONLY ONCE, AND ONCE FOR ALL, HIS PRECIOUS BLOOD HE SHED”

MIRRORS THE TRUTHS EXPRESSED IN HEBREWS 9 AND 10 THAT UNLIKE THE LEVITICAL HIGH PRIESTS, OUR HIGH PRIEST, THE LORD JESUS DID NOT OFTEN OFFER THE SAME SACRIFICE, BUT OFFERED HIMSELF ONCE, AS THE ULTIMATE SACRIFICE FOR OUR SINS

BY REPEATING THE WORD “ONCE” THE WRITER OF THIS HYMN INDICATED THAT HE DEFINITELY GOT THE MESSAGE OF HEBREWS 9 AND 10

  6. I think this was the version I remember from a child listening to Rediffusion.

Elaine and Derek, a twin, were born in 1948 and became popular in the early 1960’s.

I think the song introduced Auntie Olga’s program on a Saturday morning.

  7. The two made an album in 1961.

  8. yes John
I remember hearing this on Barbados Rediffusion
But now we are stepping up to discuss the theology of the lyrics. The next verse to consider is …

There’s a rest for little children
    Above the bright blue sky,
    Who love the blessèd Savior,
    And to the Father cry
    A rest from every turmoil,
    From sin and sorrow free,
    Where every little pilgrim
    Shall rest eternally.

We can recall that Genesis 1 & 2 teaches that God rested after creating the world in 6 days.
Some Bible commenters think that God had planned a similar rest for our fore fathers also, and that the fall precluded this causing this rest to be postponed.

Hebrews chapter 4 is the chapter in the Bible that addresses the concept of rest…thus…

1 Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it.
2 For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it.
3 For we which have believed do enter into rest, as he said, As I have sworn in my wrath, if they shall enter into my rest: although the works were finished from the foundation of the world.
4 For he spake in a certain place of the seventh day on this wise, And God did rest the seventh day from all his works.
5 And in this place again, If they shall enter into my rest.
6 Seeing therefore it remaineth that some must enter therein, and they to whom it was first preached entered not in because of unbelief:
7 Again, he limiteth a certain day, saying in David, To day, after so long a time; as it is said, To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts.
8 For if Jesus had given them rest, then would he not afterward have spoken of another day.
9 There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God.
10 For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his.
11 Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief.

This passage is not one of the easiest NT scriptures to comprehend, but what is very clear is the statement in verse 9 that……..There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God..

  9. For me the amazing thing is that the messaging in this children’s hymn was at one time available on the radio for all to hear.

The two children singing it are totally unreal by today’s standards.

    What are the messages sent?

  15. VINCENT
Re @ John at 7:11 AM
What is unreal about these children?

THEY MIGHT SEEM TO BE UNREAL TO JOHN BECAUSE MANY CHILDREN IN OUR SOCIETY MIGHT NOT BE SINGING THE SONGS OF ZION PUBLICLY, AS THESE CHILDREN DID, ALTHOUGH SOME ARE SINGING SIMPLE CHORUSES IN SUNDAY SCHOOL AND IN VACATION BIBLE SCHOOLS, AND THERE ARE SOME EXCELLENT WELL ILLUSTRATED U TUBE VIDEOS ONLINE

RE What are today’s standards for children? And who changed it? The last time I looked the standards are the same. They believe and sing what they are taught.

WHEREAS IT IS TRUE THAT CONTEMPORARY CHILDREN BELIEVE AND SING WHAT THEY ARE TAUGHT, AND WHEREAS GOD’S STANDARDS ARE THE SAME, IT IS VERY CLEAR THAT UNGODLY LEADERS HAVE CHANGED THE STANDARDS ESPECIALLY IN THE USA IN THE SCHOOLS.

50-60 YEARS AGO, IN PRIMARY SCHOOL AND IN SUNDAY SCHOOL WE WERE TAUGHT AND SANG HYMNS WITH DEEP THEOLOGICAL THOUGHTS THAT WE CLEARLY COULD NOT HAVE THEN UNDERSTOOD WELL, BECAUSE WE DID NOT KNOW THE BIBLE. BUT THESE SONGS WERE PROBABLY MEANT TO BE LIKE SEEDS PLANTED IN GOOD SOIL, BECAUSE SONGS TEND TO STAY WITH YOU .

I CERTAINLY DID NOT UNDERSTAND THE VERY DEEP THEOLOGY IN “ONCE ONLY ONCE AND ONCE FOR ALL, AS A 16 YEAR OLD CHORISTER. BUT I NEVER FORGOT THE WORDS.

NOW THAT I HAVE A GOOD UNDERSTANDING OF THE COMPARISON OF THE LEVITICAL HIGH PRIEST VERSUS CHRIST OUR HIGH PRIEST AS TAUGHT IN HEBREWS 9 &10, I CAN APPRECIATE THE PROFOUNDITY OF THOSE LYRICS.

RE Where every little PILGRIM Shall rest eternally. We are all on a pilgrimage. Let us hope that it is in the right direction and to the right Mecca.
IN THE NT, ELPIS THE WORD USED FOR “HOPE” MEANS ASSURANCE, NOT HOPE AS WE ARE PRONE TO USE THE WORD. THAT IS WHY FANNY CROSBY WROTE “BLESSED ASSURANCE JESUS IS MINE

IN HEBREWS 6 WE READ ABOUT JESUS THUS “WHICH HOPE WE HAVE AS AN ANCHOR OF THE SOUL”
IN TITUS 2 WE READ OF THE BLESSED HOPE OF HIS SECOND COMING- WHICH IS A CERTAINTY AND NOT HOPE AS WE ARE PRONE TO USE THE WORD.

IF YOU STUDY AND MEDITATE ON FIRST JOHN, YOU WILL SEE THAT THE WORD “KNOW” OR ITS COGNATE OCCURS 60 TIMES, AND IN CHAPTER 5 JOHN EXPRESSLY TEACHES THAT YOU CAN REALLY KNOW, BUT ONLY WHEN YOU TRULY BELIEVE

  18. Vincent
re Is there a connection between the Greek “gnosis” and its appearance 60 times in John’s Gospel? Is this really a cognate “gnosis” ?
GOOD QUESTION! the answer is off course YES!

First John was especially written to counteract the false teaching of a set of gnostics called Docetists, who thought that they had super knowledge and revelation, BUT THEIR UNDERSTANDING OF THE WORDS, WORK AND WORTH of Christ was askew. This is perhaps why the word “KNOW” and words of assurance meaning know are used so often in First John, as John sought to correct their very shaky foundation.
I WROTE A VERY GOOD OUTLINE ON I JOHN BASED ON THE CONCEPT OF ASSURANCE.
I MUST LOOK FOR IT AND SUBMIT IT AS A SWEET SUNDAY SERMON

  19. Full prayers with hymn singing three times a week at school.

36 weeks per year at school

108 times we sang hymns each year.

    8 years at HC.

By the time a student left unless he had been exempted, he sung or heard hymns 864 times!!

… and then there was Auntie Olga every Saturday morning, and some/most children were in church every Sunday!!

Something had to stick, pretty difficult to survive untouched!!!!

  20. Vincent
Note that BELIEVE and not Know is the key word in John’s Gospel along with LIGHT LOVE AND LIFE
KNOW IS THE KEY WORD IN FIRST JOHN.

  21. THEY ARE TWO CHILDREN’S HYMNS WHICH HAVE IN A FEW LYRICS THAT ARE TOTALLY UNSCRIPTURAL

ONE IS NOT MADE A CHRISTIAN WHEN THEIR NAME IS GIVEN. THIS IS CONTRARY TO A NUMBER OF NEW TESTAMENT VERSES THAT DETAIL HOW SALVATION WAS SOUGHT, BOUGHT AND WROUGHT

WHEREAS I LOVE THE TUNE OF ” CHRIST WHO ONCE AMONGST US , THE PHRASE “IF WE KEEP OUR PROMISE MADE HIM AT THE FONT” IS WHOLESALE RUBBISH. BABES DONOT MAKE ANY PROMISES AT THE FONT WHEN THEY ARE SPRINKLED.AS THEY ARE THEN INCAPABLE OF DOING SO.

  22. Vincent Codrington Avatar
    Vincent Codrington

    @ GP

Poetical license is allowed and used very much in sacred writings and songs. The writer and reader know and believe no promises were made at the font.

  23. I dont call that poetical licence Vincent.I call that being unscriptural, plain and simple!

We are told in 2 timothy 2:15 to RIGHTLY DIVIDE THE WORD OF TRUTH.
IF YOU KNOW THAT no promises were made at the font, THEN DONT SAY THATpromises were made at the font.
keep it simple truthful and exact. Dont pasteurise or homogenise the Word. Give it sincerely, i.e with no wax or embellishments WE ARE SUPPOSED TO EARNESTLY CONTEND FOR THE FAITH

The fact that poetical license is used very much in some sacred writings and songs does not make it right

I have never read such error in WEIRSBE WILDISH MC GEE STEDMAN BARN HOUSE, EPP JOHN R RICE, STOTT, BARCLAY, SCROGGE RYRIE,SHAFFER IRONSIDE OR ANY OF THE STALWARTS OF THE FAITH over the 50 PLUS years i HAVE BEEN STUDYING THE WORD..AND I CERTAINLY DONT TEACH ERROR. IF I CAN NOT BACK UP ANY OF MY THOUGHTS BY VERSES RIGHTLY DIVIDED IN THEIR CONTEXTS, I FOREGO PRESENTING THE THOUGHT, .

WHEN I STUDIED THEOLOGY I HAD TO SUPPORT WHAT I SAID BY SEVERAL RELEVANT SCRIPTURES

  24. In the lower school 2 years of singing, double period one afternoon a week!!

    72 more times singing hymns!!

Plus Religious Studies up to 2nd form!!

The 13 year twin, Elaine and Derek, were normal for the time.

  25. FURTHER MORE VINCENT, THE PREMISE THAT WE ARE KEPT BY KEEPING PROMISES IS CONTRARY TO THE SCRIPTURES THAT TEACH THAT BELIEVERS ARE KEPT BY GOD. SEE I PETER 1:3-5
THIS SCRIPTURE CLEARLY TEACHES THAT GOD KEEPS OUR INHERITANCE FOR US AND KEEPS US FOR OUR INHERITANCE AS WAS TAUGHT HERE ON BU IN A BLOG ON CALEB’S INHERITANCE AND OURS ON OCTOBER 27TH 2019

  26. WE ARE TAUGHT IN 1 JOHN 5 TO KEEP OURSELVES FROM IDOLS, AND IN JUDE TO KEEP OURSELVES IN THE LOVE OF GOD, BUT IF YOU STUDY THE BOOK OF JUDE WHERE KEEP IS THE KEY WORD ALONG WITH COGNATES OF KEEP, YOU WILL FIND THAT GOD IS DOING THE KEEPING.

PHILIPIANS 1:6 CLEARLY TEACHES THAT GOD IS RESPONSIBLE FOR “KEEPING US TO KEEP ON”
“Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:”

  27. JOHN
I SEE THAT YOU HAVE FOND MEMORIES OF “SINGING” WITH GERALD HUDSON AND SINGING HYMNS AT MORNING PRAYERS AT HC THRICE WEEKLY.

SOME TIME LAST YEAR WHILE PREACHING IN CENTRAL FLORIDA ON “JESUS THE SHEPHERD” WE SANG “LOVING SHEPHERD OF THEY SHEEP” AND I ASKED THE GATHERING TO IMAGINE 6OO BOYS AGED II TO 2O SINGING THOSE LYRICS.

IN THE YEAR I SPENT AT BFS BEFORE TAKING THE COMMON ENTRANCE, WE SANG HYMNS ALSO AT EVENING PRAYERS ON FRIDAY EVENINGS, AND MORNING PRAYERS WERE HELD 5 TIMES A WEEK.. I STILL REMEMBER “O STRENGTH AND STAY UPHOLDING ALL CREATION” FROM FRIDAY EVENING PRAYERS AT BFS., AS WELL AS THE TUNE ELLERS

ALSO ON ASH WEDNESDAY AND ASCENSION DAY, THE CHILDREN FROM THE CH CH PRIMARY SCHOOL AT WATER STREET, ALONG WITH THOSE FROM CH CH HIGH AND BFS AND GFS ASSEMBLED AT THE PARISH CHURCH!

  28. I remember Gerald Hudson trying to get us to sing with gusto and complaining we sounded like we had been shot through the lung or gassed.

He then went on to explain the common occurrence from WWI where many soldiers suffered these fates.

Years later I found out he was a fighter pilot in the Royal Flying Corps during WWI.

I enjoyed the singing and the way the words just fitted the music and the sound of so many voices raised in unison.

Many of the hymns I sung I did not understand but to this day can still remember them and the tune.

  29. We have commented on “a rest”, “a crown”, “a song”, “a robe” and “a harp” For Little Children. Let us now make a few remarks on “a home”. Three passages come readily to mind. They are of course more

    1-John 14:1-3.
Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.
    2- 2 Corinthians 5:1-2& 6
For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed upon with our house which is from heaven:
Therefore we are always confident, knowing that, whilst we are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord:
    3- Philippians 3:20
For our conversation (or citizenship) is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ:

  30. With respect to our home, the song writer wrote
There’s a home for little children
    Above the bright blue sky,
    Where Jesus reigns in glory,
A home of peace and joy
No home on earth is like it,
    Nor can with it compare;
    For everyone is happy
    Nor could be happier there.

This is what Revelation 22:1-5 says about this home
And he shewed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb. In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, was there the tree of life, which bare twelve manner of fruits, and yielded her fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. And there shall be no more curse: but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it; and his servants shall serve him:And they shall see his face; and his name shall be in their foreheads. And there shall be no night there; and they need no candle, neither light of the sun; for the Lord God giveth them light: and they shall reign for ever and ever.

And this is what Revelation 21 says about our heavenly home
And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea. And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God. And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away. And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And he said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful.

And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely. He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son. But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death. And there came unto me one of the seven angels which had the seven vials full of the seven last plagues, and talked with me, saying, Come hither, I will shew thee the bride, the Lamb’s wife. And he carried me away in the spirit to a great and high mountain, and shewed me that great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God,Having the glory of God: and her light was like unto a stone most precious, even like a jasper stone, clear as crystal; And had a wall great and high, and had twelve gates, and at the gates twelve angels, and names written thereon, which are the names of the twelve tribes of the children of Israel:

On the east three gates; on the north three gates; on the south three gates; and on the west three gates. And the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and in them the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb. And he that talked with me had a golden reed to measure the city, and the gates thereof, and the wall thereof. And the city lieth foursquare, and the length is as large as the breadth: and he measured the city with the reed, twelve thousand furlongs. The length and the breadth and the height of it are equal. And he measured the wall thereof, an hundred and forty and four cubits, according to the measure of a man, that is, of the angel. And the building of the wall of it was of jasper: and the city was pure gold, like unto clear glass. And the foundations of the wall of the city were garnished with all manner of precious stones. The first foundation was jasper; the second, sapphire; the third, a chalcedony; the fourth, an emerald; The fifth, sardonyx; the sixth, sardius; the seventh, chrysolyte; the eighth, beryl; the ninth, a topaz; the tenth, a chrysoprasus; the eleventh, a jacinth; the twelfth, an amethyst. And the twelve gates were twelve pearls: every several gate was of one pearl: and the street of the city was pure gold, as it were transparent glass.

And I saw no temple therein: for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple of it. And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof. And the nations of them which are saved shall walk in the light of it: and the kings of the earth do bring their glory and honour into it.And the gates of it shall not be shut at all by day: for there shall be no night there. And they shall bring the glory and honour of the nations into it. And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb’s book of life.

  33. We have commented on “a rest”, “a crown”, “a song”, “a robe” “a home”and “a harp” For Little Children. Let us now make a few remarks on “a home”. Now we come to the last blessing that we have according to our song writer- “a friend”.
There’s a Friend for little children
    Above the bright blue sky,
    A Friend who never changes,
    Whose love will never die;
Our earthly friends may fail us,
    And change with changing years,
    This Friend is always worthy
Of that dear Name He bears.

We read in John 15:13-15, that Jesus said”Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you. Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you.”

If we are his friends, then he is also our friend.
James 4:4 points out that as his friend, we ought not to friends of the world, i.e the cosmos diabolicos. James 4:4 reads “Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.”

The song leader also points out that Jesus never changes, thus agreeing with the clear teaching of Hebrews 13:8 which says Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

    Grasshopper

    I went in 1966.

Janice Millington came when I was in the “upper” school.

Mr. Billington was the last music teacher I experienced, probably 3rd form.

Ms. Millington taught my sister to grade 8 in music in 1974.

My sister won an exhibition doing Latin, Spanish and French.

She then decided to stay an extra year and took up math and music at HC.

Got an A in math in one year and her grade 8 music.

Ten times smarter than I was at school.

Funnily enough, James A Millington taught my mother music.

I found her 1939 Grade II certificate in violin.

  41. You are correct John.
Peter Billington was the first real music teacher at HC.from about 65-69
In his time we had the first school choir during my time (62-70). One remembers singing JONAH MAN JAZZ, and at Christmas 68 REJOICE & BE MERRY

In 68/69 he put on MARK OF THE GOAT
He was followed by Doris Provencal KIrton, under whom our choir performed at Christmas time at St Mary’s to raise funds to repair their organ.
Janice Millington came in the 70’s after I left.
