Dear Editor

I was shocked to read your article in the Nation of 18 June, which reported that Minister of Culture, John King, is opposed to ‘dumping Nelson’.

Mr King is, of course, right that everybody can form their own personal opinions about any issue, including that of racism. However, the problem is that as Minister of Culture, he represents the people of Barbados. How would it reflect on our country if in international meetings he is defending the maintenance of statues glorifying racists and mass murderers even as countries all over the world are removing these offensive objects from the public space?

Mr King says that he has been reading the cabinet papers from previous discussions of this matter but demonstrates a shocking lack of understanding of the issue. I will pass without comment his preposterous statement that removing symbols that glorify racism, such as Nelson’s statue, amounts to visiting the horrors of chattel slavery on others. He appears to think that taking a stand against racism amounts to excluding non-Africans from the history of Barbados. According to this logic, every Bajan of non-African descent supports anti-African racism and the glorification of its architects. This is a terrible insult to those Bajans of non-African descent who strongly oppose racism and also demand the removal of statues and monuments that glorify it. Is John King not aware that the earliest rebellions in Barbados saw enslaved Africans and indentured Irish people fighting together against the oppressive powers of that time? Does he not see across the whole globe that millions of people of all nationalities and colours are taking a united stand against racism, and those who seek to glorify it?

The thing is that the foundation of racism, upon which modern Barbados was established, cannot be incorporated into any new Barbados in which we simply see each other as human beings because racism is opposed exactly to this concept and insists on categorising people into superior and inferior groups. That is why today, people are demanding that racism has no place in the modern world. You cannot defend racism and its symbols and at the same time claim to be against it. Would anyone take Germany seriously if it claimed to be against Nazism while maintaining statues and other monuments glorifying Hitler and the other leaders of the Nazi regime?

I wonder if Mr King’s comments about the parliament building, the wharf and elsewhere are serious comments. If they are, he really does have no understanding of this issue. Wasn’t Barbados itself around during slavery and playing a part in it? What are we to do with it? Throw it in the sea? The demand is very clear. Statues and monuments are some of the ways in which society honours individuals from the past. Those that glorify racists and people involved in the commission of crimes against humanity should be taken down from the public space because they are a statement that the society honours racism and crimes against humanity in the here and now.

There are, of course, many other issues in Barbados that need to be addressed in order to build a new and inclusive society that works for all Barbadians. However, we will make no headway with these if we are unable to confront and overcome the monster of racism that still disfigures our island. The taking down of Nelson is a small step in this effort.

On this issue, Minister King is quite simply wrong.

King not on board with dumping Nelson

MINISTER OF CULTURE John King is not in support of the wholesale removal of Lord Nelson’s statue in The City.

He told the media yesterday his opinions on Nelson and race on the whole were personal and he would stick by them, even if they cost him.

“There are a number of papers I am now studying, from about 2009, on discussions various Cabinets would have had on this issue, but on a personal note – and I know what I am about to say is going to upset a lot of people – I would agree that if you’re talking about Heroes Square, there are validations to the varied opinions. But I will not – and it could cost me everything – be a part or party of trying to do to others what we say has been done to us,” he said.

Calls for the removal of the statue were made again during last Saturday’s protest march through Bridgetown in support of the Black Lives Matter movement in the United Sates and across the world.

King said he did not believe in “stripping down everything and throwing it away”, saying there was a history before slavery and it was now time for a new mindset.

“If you are saying that during enslavement and the colonisation process, that our history, culture and way of life were wiped out and we came into places like the Americas as minorities, why would you now turn around and advocate to do the same thing to somebody else? The discussion we should be having is, if we want to remove this statue, where do we put it?

“How do we recognise the collective history of Barbados is not relegated solely to Barbadians of Afro descent? How do we also incorporate the history of the indigenous people who were here [first]? How do you incorporate

all of the groups that make up Barbados? Let us look at these things for what they are and use them to inspire ourselves to change our prejudices and look at each other as human beings,” he urged.

King said the Parliament Buildings

and the Wharf were around during slavery and played a part in it, asking if those too should be thrown away. He said the Nelson statue should be utilised to the advantage of Barbados while not disadvantaging anyone.

As for the Black Lives Matter movement, King, who as a calypsonian and Pic-O-De-Crop monarch performed social commentaries such as

Fool’s Paradise, How Many More? and I Want A Plantation, said he was accustomed to speaking out against social injustice on his own and would only join any group if and when he felt it necessary.

“I’ve always been advocating against racism, as an entertainer performing overseas and from growing up in England, so I know it well. What is going on in the Unites States has been going on for eons but it is now easier to see due to social media.

“[However] there are other issues right here I don’t hear people talking about, issues some people don’t want to protest, such as classism, which is also a knee on people’s necks. We need to talk about the violence in our own communities . . . and I don’t hear anyone talking about the history of the people we call ‘red legs’ in St John. I hope our future generations find themselves in a different place,” he said.

  1. Here are some records at familysearch.org of Barbadians named George Washington from 1779 to the 1890’s.

The use of the name here was nowhere as popular as in the USA.

George Washington Carver was but one example in the US.

Horatio Nelson was much more popular in Barbados during this period and was very popular in the USA.

When you consider Horatio Nelson fought against the USA for his king that was clearly an accolade given him by citizens of the newly formed United States.

There is a reason countries across the globe, especially White dominant countries, are ushering in reforms to address the issue of race. There is a reason why companies are addressing the matter for similar reasons. There is a reason why Blacks and Whites are protesting across the globe. You are on the wrong side of the issue.

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

    I agree.

The reason is that it is a measure of the success of the communist/marxist attempts to divide over the past several decades coming face to face with Donald Trump.

Trump is hated because he is likely to unravel all the work put in over the decades.

There is a mad scramble to destabilise and divide now he seems poised to win a second term because he will do it.

All efforts have failed to oust Trump and have only made him stronger.

The agenda can no longer be hidden in the scramble and the pretense is dropped.

So, surprise surprise, BLM exposes its agenda, nothing to do with any lives, just a scramble to get rid of Trump.

My guess is it will make him even stronger.

It’s really comical how you have the ready-made capacity to ‘recite’ the popular names of white racist heroes given to black male slaves but unable to find any with the name Jesus aka Yeshua or even Jesús which is rather common in Hispanic cultures.

Even some slave-trading ships were ‘christened’ with the name Jesus and baptized with wine.

Weren’t the black slaves deserving of such godly Christian names like ‘John’?

We know there were a lot of ‘Ole Black Joes’ but how many were called “Jesus” in recognition of the Christians’ hero, the white Lord & Saviour?

So……it may be a slow death for some but still due to COVID.

It is interesting, instructive and important that Bim, Reggae land Jamaica and our other regionsl brethren are doing so well and similarly current high temp places like Arizona, Florida and California are exploding with new cases…

I mention the climate angle because the adored US leader had banked his economy on the virus being sun-burnt away in the hot summer months … but he refused to help facilitate that by recommending the protocols our leaders are enforcing.

Trump is a genius that way!!

It requires excellent interpretive skills to recognize that “protesters/looters/rioters are […] airheads [and] their own worst enemy” to congregate in the open spaces – some without masks- to support protests against inhumane treatment and negligent killings but completely sage to congregate indoors – most without masks – to support divisive guidance on pandemic safety and the breaking of rule of law, to name two.

One group is sage the other airheads.. . SMH!

That we can continue to drive insane political agendas on the realities of life and death during a war of a rapidly spreading virus is ridiculous…

That anyone can propose or defend the reasoning that greater testing is causing the increase in cov19 cases is laughable and idiotic.

Of course less testing simply means that the positives cov19 cases go undetected which then fosters a false sense of security or ‘fake news’ … it is simply unbelievable that anyone proposing such mad-science concoctions can be considered as a competent leader!

  36. The problem from the beginning was gatherings of large crowds.

Chinese New Year celebrations in New York. Milan, Madrid, London etc.

No Chinese New Year celebrations in Hong Kong or Taiwan.

Pre Lenten celebrations in New Orleans Rio (that’s in Brazil), Netherlands, Germany etc.

Once there is a large gathering of crowds there will be virus spread.

That’s why 11 million watched the Trump Rally on TV.

    You think Trump supporters stupid?

The simple fact is that COVID is not nearly as deadly as was first imagined.

    In the flu category.

So people are prepared to risk gathering and virus spread be damned.

    Just like flu!!

We have heard this already, a repeat is not scholarly.

@John… Maybe .. and the man himself definitely appears stupid !

You argue that where there is a large gathering of crowds there will be virus spread” and suggests ‘… that’s why 11 million watched the Trump Rally on TV.’

Yet the man himself wanted to have an in person rally for a large gathering… which according to you only stupid people would do!

So relatively speaking if allegedly sane people support the stupid polices of a supposedly sane man then surely it makes one think that yes Trump and ‘Trump supporters [are] stupid”!

  39. Pretzel logic.

Trump planned to host an indoor rally for 19000 people. Trump is a genius. He knows there is no reason to fear COVID.

Trump supporters declined the invitation to the rally. Trump supporters ain’t foolish. They are afraid of catching COVID.

These statements are conflicting. SOMEBODY HAS TO BE STUPID HERE!

    Besides you, of course!

Tied yourself up in knots there!

  40. It should now be obvious and seen for what it is. A Barbados scholarship is akin to passing the common entrance exam and going to a secondary school. John shows no further development after passing his A-Levels (first year at a university).
    His reasoning is often fallacious
    His post are often trite
His history is full of lies and wicked
    A sick soul

    @John

We have heard this already, a repeat is not scholarly.

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

So we agree that BLM is responsible for any COVID spikes.

Some seem unable to grasp this simple fact.

Trump supporters declined the invitation to the rally. Trump supporters ain’t foolish. They are afraid of catching COVID.

    ++++++++++++++++++++

    Trump supporters ain’t foolish, agreed.

    But BLM folks are, agreed.

  43. I am through wasting time with you. A blind man on a trotting horse can see that you are tied up in knots right now.

Tied up like the jive turkey you are.

Not even fit for my oven though. Somebody has injected you with poison- the poison of hatred.

You are useless even as fertilizer.

And that is something on which most of us agree!

  44. DPD,

Reports show that the COVID spike is due to young people hanging out at bars and restaurants where obviously they cannot wears masks while eating and drinking.

This is why the Republican governors are now closing bars again and reducing restaurant seating limits to 50 % from 75 %.

This action by said governors clearly puts paid to any specious argument that masks don’t work. It does the same for the argument that the 99.9 % mask-wearing BLM supporters are responsible for the spike.

PS. I have to take back my statement that John is useless. I forgot that I use his posts to school my son in logic. The lesson comprises of “Spot the Knot” questions. Mostly, he gets it. Just as he did with Grenville’s “Flush the Crap” exercises I used to set him.

  45. Has the white business elite abandoned the president? Following her silence over Black Lives Matter, they have now come out with a statement calling for a national debate on racial division and inequality. Is this the beginning of a new national conversation? I have said on numerous occasions, for the sake of the future of traditional Barbados, black and white Barbados must reach a settlement.

Here is what they had to say:

he Barbados Private Sector Association issued a statement today in relation to key issues which have generated increased debate in recent weeks.

The statement said there is a need to “reconstruct and rebuild” nationally, a process which must “include discussion on racial division and economic enfranchisement”.

Please see the full statement below.

“The members of the Barbados Private Sector Association (BPSA) continue to be engaged together with other Social Partners in the process of rebuilding our economy and society following the Covid-19 pandemic’s significant impact. At the same time, the BPSA too is cognizant of the present global, social and economic realities which could impact our small developing nation’s ability to achieve “the future we want”, for all citizens and residents and the generations to come.

“Given the need and opportunity for us to ‘reconstruct and rebuild’ nationally, occurring at this time of global conversation on racial tensions and inequities, attention must also include a focus on imbalances that currently exist in our country. It is therefore timely, and necessary, to honestly look at the society we live in with a view to progressing Barbados to become a model of inclusiveness, diversity and equality of access for all. Undoubtedly, this process must necessarily include discussion on racial division and economic enfranchisement in Barbados.

“BPSA recognises the benefit of consultation and dialogue and regards these as being critical if any meaningful positive national change is to be achieved. More importantly, such consultation and dialogue must be of a calibre to develop an implementable plan to address, with success, the issues including any inequalities and inequities. It is anticipated that such a plan would be underpinned with a commitment from all stakeholders to be part of the change process.

“We also signal BPSA’s support for the removal to a more suitable environment the statue of Lord Nelson which was erected on March 22, 1813 to commemorate the anniversary of the British Royal Navy’s victory in the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. Indeed, the renaming of Trafalgar Square to Heroes Square renders the current positioning of Lord Nelson, overlooking the seat of our National Heroes, incongruous.

“BPSA stands ready not only to be engaged in the dialogue but also for each of us to introspect and to answer all well formulated, collective calls to action drafted with the input of every voice of our nation.

“We therefore call for discussion and engagement on these matters of national concern with a view to agreeing specific and tangible actions, as collectively, we journey to achieve ‘One Barbados’.” (Quote)

What are you (and the other ‘house-negro’ Johnny) going to say now that one of your mulatto ‘kith and kin’ (the leading spokesman for the remnants of the Bajan white commercial cabal Eddie Clarke) is supporting the removal of your idol Nelson?

Are you and the other black Johnny still on the cultural plantation going to jump on the bandwagon after the approval has been granted for the van driver called MAM to remove it to its culturally rightful place to act as a curiosity piece of ‘English’ naval history in the local museum?

As part of the coming ‘Truth & Reconciliation’ bridge building process you ought to confess your sins for the many racialist distortions of Bajan history.

How about supporting the ‘erection’ of an obelisk called the “Light of Freedom” powered by the rays of the Sun in memory of those who actually fought for the abolition of chattel slavery in Barbados (including the Quakers)?

We are quite confident there will be many benefactors in the “mudda-cuntry” (like Benedict Cumberbatch of “12 Years a Slave” fame) who would be ever so keen to jump onboard that financing boat as part of their own psyche and part of their moral healing process for the sins committed by their very rich ancestors.

Isn’t the Bajan model of chattel slavery one of the greatest blots of disgrace on the faces of the so-called Christian’ white people which would remain through the ages similar to the mark your Yahweh inflicted upon poor Cain?
