I am sure by now you are aware that people in Bristol removed the statue of slave trader, Edward Colston, and deposited it in a nearby river. With this act, people in that city sent a clear message to the world that they would no longer tolerate the glorification of accomplices in the commission of crimes against humanity and those who grew rich from their sordid involvement in human trafficking.

In the present climate when there is a heightened global awareness of the need for zero tolerance towards racism and its symbols, it is unconscionable that in Barbados, a country where over 95% of its citizens are descendants of enslaved Africans, that a monument like Colston’s in Bristol, sits in the heart of our capital city. It is an affront to the people of Barbados and to those all over the world who are standing up to speak out against racism that Nelson’s monument continues to sit in the heart of Bridgetown. It is long overdue that this odious tribute to racism be removed.

There are no longer any excuses that can be made for your government’s failure to remove it. I am therefore writing to you as a concerned Bajan to call on you to do the right thing and remove this affront to the people of Barbados and to all those who today are courageously raising their voice against racism.

It would be very fitting, if it was replaced with a tribute to Nanny Grigg and to the many thousands of unsung Bajan women whose self-sacrifice, ingenuity and struggle have played a decisive role in our people’s progress from the pit of degradation that the English slave masters threw us into.

    “The Louisville Metro Council unanimously passed a law banning “no-knock” warrants in the city on Thursday. The measure was named after Breonna Taylor, the 26-year-old woman who was shot and killed in March after officers from the Louisville Metro Police Department that entered her home with one such warrant.

    Under “Breonna’s Law,” law enforcement in Louisville will no longer be able force themselves into homes unannounced, as they allegedly did on the night Taylor was killed, according to the Washington Post. Cops will also be required to wear body cameras when serving warrants.

    The three cops, who shot Taylor at least eight times, were not wearing body cameras on the night she was killed, and they have yet to be arrested or even charged with her death.”

    I am curious: Aren’t there lots of cases where officers are called to residences or stop cars to investigate and are met by gun fire and are shot and killed? You seemed incensed by my stating that America is a wild west country and informs me that there are fifty states in America. To show your lack of intellect, because you do not agree with my point I must be drinking. To make a statement like that because you do not agree with me says a lot about you lack of rational reasoning and how petty and small minded you are. I watched the video, the man wrestled with the cops who wanted to hand cuffed him, got hold of the taser, fired it and missed the officer and ran away before turning towards the officer. It is all there on video and cannot be disputed. A mob then burnt down Wendy’s. Wendy’s did not cause the confrontation. These are the facts. And I state again that after the elections no one is going to care two farts about BLM. You can get as annoyed as you want. I have stated my position.

    Alleynedale plantation was known as Cabbage Tree Hall long before the Alleyne family became associated with it.

    My guess is Sir John Gay Alleyne’s (1724-1801) marriage to Mary Terrill, daughter of William Terrill is how the Alleyne family became associated with Cabbage Tree Hall and lent their name to its provenance.

    Did you know there is a field named “SIR JOHN” at what is now known as Alleynedale Plantation, formerly Cabbage Tree Hall, property of the Browne and then Terrill families?

    Looks like it wasn’t until 1816 that the plantation became the property of the Alleyne family which of course means, if you can do the math, not many years before the end of slavery.

    So what is so ‘informatively newsworthy’ of that claim?

    Maybe it was the contributions the plantation owners made to the erection of the Nelson statue in recognition of the liberation of the black slaves from the Hitler of the time, the French colonizers.

    Aren’t you the one who is always claiming that sugar was never ‘profitable’ in Barbados?

    Didn’t you say that Barbados survived on transhipment (chandling) services whose cash flows were used to prop up the local sugar industry and to keep the black slaves healthy, happy and in good Christian ‘spirits’?

    This is entirely unsurprising. The obscene profits of the first century of the Barbados sugar industry had subsided by the mid eighteenth century. There was another windfall for Barbados and Jamaica in the 1790s when the Haitian revolution stopped sugar exports from there, but the writing was on the wall.

    This is, of course, why the abolition movement began to have some success in the early 19th century. The enslavement of African descended peoples simply was not as profitable as it used to be, so the enslavers extorted that enormous sum of blood money from the British exchequer in the abolition scam.

    John Knox knows this, or at least he used to, but it does not fit his White supremacy narrative; so he gives the holy White Quakers the walk on role to magically explain geopolitical economics.

    The British and their descendants in the colonies boast of the victory over Nazi Germany because they want to make their own colonial crimes forgotten.

    It is time for the British and all Barbadians with British passports to finally pay reparations to the Caribbean – just as Germany did to Israel. I also propose the cession of Scotland to CARICOM in analogy to the cession of territory from the German Empire to Poland.

    We must finally shut the British up and teach them a lessson. No British tourists anymore in Barbados without reparations! The Nelson riots are only the beginning.

    Based on evidence known as of y’day I disagreed that there was no base case for an indictment.

    I agree that US courts have seemingly created a loose deadly force standard but despite that it’s tough to understand how a PO can consider an already ‘fired’ taser as a possibly deadly item!

    Earliest reports suggested that Rayshard fired the taser while running and missed … so in effect the one-shot device was now mostly ineffectual…

    However, the PO still discharged his gun at a man RUNNING AWAY from him and ostensibly posing absolutely no threat to him … THAT is grounds for 2nd degree or a man-slaughter charge IMHO!

    BTW note that in this case and George’s too it was the MORE experienced PO who acted with more recklessness.

    And @Donna, it obviously takes the very sharp minds of our scholar brigade to offer the grandest, hair-brainest, outer-worldly schemes.

    Not only did the POs talk with this man for 30 plus minutes and not ask about him carrying a gun or search him for one but they also scuffled with him when trying to handcuff … no gun fell from his waist band, they felt or saw none but our analytic scholarly detailed thinker can still conjure the possibility of one as a possible threat.

    He ‘misses’ nothing or ‘sees’ anything when inane lying is the focus!

    21st October 1805 Admiral Lord Nelson defeats a Combined French and Spanish fleet off Cape Trafalgar. During the battle he is shot and later dies of his wounds.

    When and Where was the Battle of Trafalgar?

    The Battle of Trafalgar is one of the most famous naval battles in British history. Nelson led Britain to victory over a combined French and Spanish fleet, but was shot and died during the battle.

    The Battle of Trafalgar took place on 21 October 1805 during the Napoleonic War (1803–1815), as Napoleon Bonaparte and his armies tried to conquer Europe. Vice-Admiral Lord Nelson, commanding the British fleet, devised an ambitious plan of attack, which involved ambushing the Franco-Spanish fleet off the Cape of Trafalgar, in south-west Spain. His attack was to prove a decisive victory for the British.

    The battle developed into a ferocious pounding match but the British had the advantage thanks to Nelson’s strategic pre-planning and the fact his men were better trained in delivering rapid, accurate gunnery. When firing finally ceased at 5.30pm, 17 enemy ships had been captured and another was a blazing wreck. Four managed to escape but were captured a few weeks later, and 11 managed to struggle back to Cadiz.

    A total of 449 British sailors were killed and 1217 wounded. French and Spanish losses were heavier: 4408 were dead, 2545 wounded and some 20,000 taken prisoner.

    The Battle of Trafalgar cemented Britain’s reputation as ruler of the seas and demonstrated that the Royal Navy had superiority in training, professionalism and expertise in naval tactics that set it apart from its rivals. By 1809 there were over 140,000 men serving on 732 ships, more than ever before.

    Under Nelson’s command, aboard HMS Victory, the Royal Navy sank 22 ships from the Franco-Spanish fleet without the loss of a single British vessel. This spectacular victory confirmed Britain’s naval supremacy, and was achieved, in part, due to Nelson’s departure from traditional naval tactics (which involved engaging an enemy fleet in a single line of battle parallel to the enemy) to divide his smaller force into two columns directed perpendicularly against the larger enemy fleet. Although the battle was won by the English, Lord Nelson was tragically killed by a sniper’s bullet, surviving long enough to be told of the victory.

    The formation of the Navy League in 1894 gave added impetus to the movement to recognise Nelson’s legacy, and grand celebrations were held in Trafalgar Square on Trafalgar Day, 1896. It was widely commemorated of the historic victory won by the Royal Navy, commanded by Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson, over the combined French and Spanish fleets at the Battle of Trafalgar on 21 October 1805.

    The British (and racists like John Knox) like to pretend that they were the first to end Atlantic enslavement of African peoples. But that is utter bullshit of course. That honour goes to the people of the the French colony of Saint Domingue (now Haiti) through the insurrection of enslaved people that began in August 1791, so it was not Quakers or White people at all who started to defeat this crime against humanity. The British were not even the first Europeans to get on the bandwagon: the first European legislative abolition of the slave trade was by Denmark; passed in 1792, but not coming into force until 1803. In 1794 the French revolutionary government in Paris confirmed emancipation, decreeing the abolition of slavery across all French colonies, although the reactionary Napoleon reinstated it 8 years later.

    Of course my Barbadian ancestors looked to the example of military heroes for inspiration, but not Nelson. They looked instead to the successful insurrection by self-liberated enslaved people against French colonial rule in Saint-Domingue, now the sovereign state of Haiti, in 1791. This is what was undoubtedly in the minds of Bussa and other Barbadian heroes in the early decades of the 19th century.

    Louis Delgres in Guadeloupe should be required reading.

    I hiked in Guadeloupe back in the late 1990’s over the mountains starting at Vieux Forte in the South.

    The group had some problems, and split in two.

    I remember starting at 7:30 am on the third or fourth day in the mountains and reaching the next bivouac at 9:00pm.

    It was tough but a wonderful experience.

    The following day my group hiked to Trois Cretes but myself and three others got separated and had to pitch a tarpaulin along the trail to the bivouac at Trois Cretes when it got dark.

    The makeshift tent worked fine during the downpour in the night.

    The Gendarmes were out looking for us and a Rescue helicopter flew in from Martinique to help with the search.

    We saw it through the trees on the way to Trois Cretes and wondered what it was doing.

    The Gendarmes met the group at the Trois Cretes bivouac and we went down from the mountains.

    We were fine and would have continued to the North and were surprised the Gendarmes were looking for us.

    Ended up on Guadeloupe TV and in the news.

    I suspect the trail got its name because Victor Hugues, when he returned from France with the proclamation freeing all French slaves in 1794 found Guadeloupe occupied by the British.

    He landed on the south west side of the island and trekked with his soldiers to Pointe a Pitre where he defeated the British.

    Barbadians were present as well including slaves who fulfilled the role of pioneers in the military operation.

    The guillotine was used in Place de la Concorde to execute planters with Royalist tendencies but the British and Barbadians were allowed to return.

    The British West India Regiment was founded shortly afterwards primarily to combat the threat of the French.

    The memorial outside the Museum by the stables in the Garrison commemorates the names of the British Regiment who fell in the operation.

    Equivalent to the memorial to Nelson .. “Greater Love hath no man …”.

    We traversed the Victor Hugues Trail, passing Matouba where Louis Delgres died in 1802 when Napoleon sent Richepanse and an army to reinstitute slavery.

    French and English History are radically different where the West Indies are concerned.

    The trails are more developed now and people are encouraged to do sections but back then we tried to do the entire length from South Coast to North Coast.

    Back then there were no sign posts except for a small metallic strip on the occasional tree but the footpath was for the most evident except where there had been mudslides..

    I had a cousin who piloted a LIAT plane that in the mist crashed into Soufreire back in the 70’s.

    He was not even supposed to fly that day which was his day off.

    Grieving widow says home drums should beat first

    Selwyn Blues Knight was a black life that mattered. But while Barbadians recently took to the streets to protest in the wake of American George Floyd’s slaying by a white cop in Minneapolis, no one has agitated or marched for justice for the late barman.

    That was the position today of Knight’s widow Marleen who two days after the Caribbean Movement for Peace and Integration (CMPI) staged a march in The City against police brutality, racism and other issues, said that five years after her husband’s death allegedly at the hands of a policeman at Dash Gap, Bank Hall, St Michael, she was still waiting for justice.

    Marleen said she was still in disbelief that Barbadians marched following Floyd’s death, but did not take to the streets to call for justice for her deceased husband.

    “Home drums beat first. This is five years now that my husband has been killed and nobody ain’t come to see whether I surviving, how I doing, nothing. I don’t even hear from the lawyers.

    “But then they could be protesting for George Floyd. These things ain’t right. I can’t feel good, so I start my protest then on Facebook letting them know Selwyn Blues Knight’s life mattered also, along with his son,” the frustrated widow told Barbados TODAY at the Queen Mary Road, Bank Hall, St Michael home she once shared with her partner of 27 years.

    Police constable Everton Gittens, who is now on bail, was charged for murdering Knight and shooting his son Junior Knight, on March 15, 2015. The police officer allegedly shot the men at Dash Gap, Bank Hall, after they had chased a burglar who had stolen items from their home. That burglar was subsequently charged for his home intrusion.

    “My son still got two bullets in him, one in the buttocks that shattered, and the one that he got in the shoulder move and gone to the back of his neck. I can’t sleep comfortably. Many nights I got to get up and go and check to make sure that my child still living because I don’t know what to expect.

    “I ain’t getting no satisfaction. I ain’t getting no justice. The Attorney General [Dale Marshall] ain’t checking for me, not even the representative for out here [St Michael Central’s Arthur Holder] that never once come and sit down and have a one-on-one conversation with me,” she said.

    The newspaper vendor lamented that her life has been in turmoil since Knight’s death.

    She explained that her late husband was the sole breadwinner of the household and took responsibility for paying the majority of the bills, while she filled in the gap with what money she made from selling newspapers.

    However, the widow lamented that at this time “papers ain’t making any money”, her bills have gone into arrears and buying food has become a difficult task because of limited funds. She noted that she could only do so much with the BDS$180 she receives from the Welfare Department at times.

    “Somebody should be looking out for me because Everton Gittens was a police, or is a police. He on $200,000 bail, and most likely he getting half pay. I ain’t getting nothing. But it gine got to kill me, because I ain’t giving up.

    “I can’t do nothing about my husband because he dead and gone. But I got my son and he got two young children. Suppose he die? What will happen to them and what will happen to me? I don’t have no back-up,” she said.

    Close to tears, a grieving Marleen said in addition to not having her husband to support her through the serious health challenges she is currently experiencing, she felt that her husband’s case was taking too long to come to trial. She went as far as to question whether her humble social status was a factor.

    “For the way how I see things going, like them want me to forget about it, but I can’t forget about it. If them want to keep Everton Gittens, keep Everton Gittens. Give me a settlement then that I could live and let me move on with my life,” she said, adding her son could die as a result of the shifting bullet in his body and should be compensated in the interest of his children.

    With much passion in her voice, Marleen also voiced concerns about Government’s intention to lay a Black Lives Matter (BLM) resolution in Parliament this week, as was announced by Minister of Environment Trevor Prescod at last Saturday’s protest.

    “That is only because of George Floyd. What about the ones here? But I got to stand up and represent me, my husband and my son. And if I got to do it alone, so be it.”

    The tears now rolling down her cheeks, the grandmother of seven said that seven months ago she was thrown into a state of mourning once again when her son Jomo Savoury committed suicide following a period of depression.

    She said Jomo’s death was yet another blow particularly because he was the person she leaned on for support. Marleen is now faced with having to repay the money she borrowed to take care of Jomo’s funeral arrangements.

    “And people walking about talking about justice. It got to start from home. You can’t bring in somebody from outside and want justice when you ain’t giving nobody where you live justice.

    “He knows how he bills gine get paid, while I got to be scratching my head studying which part I will get something to eat, how the bills gine get paid. This is wrong. The Government should be helping me in some way. I am 64 and if I could work as I would like, well so be it, but I can’t work. I got to get knee replacement now,” she said.

    “. . . I need help. I don’t know if them want me to bow down to them and beg them like a dog, but I ain’t doing it. You see how much money George Floyd ‘get’ in the States? What I getting? I ain’t getting nothing. So tell me, what is the sense that them marching for George Floyd and Barbados in the same predicament because nothing ain’t gine change. I waiting to see this Black Lives Matter resolution,” she added. anestahenry@barbadostoday.bb
