  1. But for the goodness of God

  2. Thank God this morning that I am still in the land of the living my childhood friend who was vacationing in Barbados from NY a few weeks ago, stated to family and friends that he wasn’t feeling well and immediately returned to NY and was admitted to the hospital where he died of the coronavirus. He was just 55 years of age with preexisting medical conditions!

  3. @ The Friday preacher GP:

You are confusing yourself by misunderstanding the different ‘deus ex machina’ devices used by the various playwrights’ versions of the Passion Play.

Is it really Seven Last ‘Words’ spoken by the eponymous Jesus or the Seven Last ‘Sayings’ of Yeshua?

We will leave you to ponder why the death of your fictional Jesus falls on a different ‘bad’ Friday each year but his good birth is fixed on the 25th December each year.

BTW, you need to stop using the pagan iconography to symbolize your ‘view’ of god Yahweh.

You Christian fundamentalists need to get your own set of symbolism to portray your gods, saviours and saints but without the halos or the Aten.

How about using the Orange Turd in a toupee as Trump Almighty!

  4. @Miller

The photo was all blogmaster, therefore direct your ire this way.

  5. Sorry to hear Dompey, was this the guy that worked at AA?

  6. Lead us heavenly father lead us i remember so well a favourite sang in Anglican Churches

Not ire, but a lamp for enlightenment.

Glad to see you are opening your eyes. LOL!!

Still want to hear from our Sunday pastor why Good Friday appears to be a moving target while Xmas is fixed.

  8. Thank you David … Roy Standard who attended Harrison College with GP and some of the older guys here was his uncle!

  9. Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them nor serve them”: second of the Ten Commandments.

Another law of God And a blatant disregarded
The picture of the Cross highlighted in the Sermon speaks volume of mans disobedience to the laws of God

Wonderful Music To Celebrate This Special Easter Season!

    Happy Easter….. Join the chorus….

The season of Easter invites every one of us to remember the Passover enabled by the Christ. It was always for our benefit. It is from the same enduring pattern… From the very beginning, His Promises were to be realized for each of us. So when life comes in the varieties of pain and sorrow, it’s often then when we drop our heads and forget to look upwards…. To the Heavens, as a reminder of His Power and Majesty. And that amongst all that we can barely see, He still has not forgotten us, and never will. He is the Beginning and the End, the First and the Last. His each and every Promise will be fulfilled. Even in the pain and sorrows of our lives…. His Will is sustained by the Father… that we may each of us finish our journey. This Easter Sunday, let us shout for joy in tears and gratitude… for we have not been forgotten nor pushed aside as Satan would have us believe. We are still within His Mind and His Heart, ever to be a part of His Will, never to diminished but to be lifted up where all our tears will be wiped away. Thank you Lord Jesus, for each of us so sustained. Thank you for Your Sacrifice, the Word of Your Instruction, Your loving Kindness… that is quietly revealed… if we would only take the time to look….

Enjoy Bethel Music… Dr. Gregory C. D. Young.

It would be worth the effort if we could use the day as one of “At – one- ment “. A day where we reflect on our commonality rather than our differences.
Good Friday, if it is to mean anything to the Millennials, must speak of the precepts which Jesus the Christ is believed to have taught during his three years of ministry. Love and Forgiveness. No Judgement.

  12. As Charles Knights has been commenting on BU of late, if nothing else, be kind.

  13. Vincent

Please kindly note that the precepts which Jesus Christ taught during his three years of ministry also included Judgement.

    PLEASE BE ACCURATE SIR

The doctrine of hell is uncomfortable for most of us. However, our understanding of hell shapes our view of the gospel, God’s holiness, and our depravity. If we don’t accept the reality of hell, we won’t rightly understand the glory of the gospel.

Jesus talks about hell in the Gospels. Even a cursory read-through shows Jesus talked about it plenty. In fact, Jesus talked about hell more than any other person in the Bible. In Luke 16, he describes a great chasm over which “none may cross from there to us.” In Matthew 25, Jesus tells of a time when people will be separated into two groups, one entering into his presence, the other banished to “eternal fire.”

Jesus talks about hell more than he talks about heaven, and describes it more vividly. There’s no denying that Jesus knew, believed, and warned against the absolute reality of hell.

Jesus doesn’t only reference hell, he describes it in great detail. He says it is a place of eternal torment (Luke 16:23), of unquenchable fire (Mark 9:43), where the worm does not die (Mark 9:48), where people will gnash their teeth in anguish and regret (Matt. 13:42), and from which there is no return, even to warn loved ones (Luke 16:19–31). He calls hell a place of “outer darkness” (Matt. 25:30), comparing it to “Gehenna” (Matt. 10:28), which was a trash dump outside the walls of Jerusalem where rubbish was burned and maggots abounded. Jesus talks about hell more than he talks about heaven, and describes it more vividly. There’s no denying that Jesus knew, believed, and warned against the absolute reality of hell.

Jesus has to talk about hell because it is the fate that awaits all people apart from him. Because of Adam’s sin, we’re all guilty and deserve God’s eternal punishment. Contrary to popular belief, hell is not a place where God sends those who have been especially bad; it’s our default destination. We need a rescuer or we stand condemned.

So we’re left with two options: stay in our state of depravity and be eternally punished, or submit to the Savior and accept his gift of redemption.

  14. Agree that Jesus preached words that are nourishment for the mind soul and body
However the Christian cannot take away or replace these nourishments with man made interpretations unto themselves
So within all which Jesus has taught lays the ten commandments by which all must adhere
Therefore i must indeed send a warning that the traditions of man crafted in idolatry and upheld as religious beliefs have no part of Jesus teachings and are not found in the bible
    With exception to the Sabbath

You are quite right. Hell is a place of “outer darkness”. I am sure that statement meant something to a Jew living in the First Century of the Common Era. I cannot be sure that your understanding is the same as theirs or the reporters. It is good Human psychology ,however. When we are in the dark, mentally and physically, we humans are in Hell.

  16. re You are quite right.

    OF COURSE I AM

I HAVE AGAIN RIGHTLY DIVIDED THE WORD OF TRUTH AND POINTED OUT WHAT THE BIBLE ACTUALLY SAYS

RE I am sure that statement meant something to a Jew living in the First Century of the Common Era.

IT APPARENTLY SEEMS TO MEAN THE SAME TODAY INCLUDING TO ANGLICAN SCHOLARS LIKE STOTT AND BARCLAY etc

RE I cannot be sure that your understanding is the same as theirs or the reporters.

WHAT YOU ARE SURE ABOUT OR NOT SURE ABOUT RELATES PURELY TO YOUR IGNORANCE OF THE WORD

I DONT REALLY CARE WHAT YOU THINK OF MY UNDERSTANDING OR THAT OF RELIABLE COMMENTATORS, FOR
the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his.

The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God endures forever. iSAIAH 40:8

Forever, O LORD, Your word is settled in heaven. Psalm 119:89

BUT THE WORD OF THE LORD ENDURES FOREVER ” 1 Peter 1:25

And this is the word which was preached to you.

The sum of Your word is truth, And every one of Your righteous ordinances is everlasting. Psalm 119:160

The counsel of the LORD stands forever, The plans of His heart from generation to generation.Psalm 33:11

The counsel of the LORD stands forever, The plans of His heart from generation to generation.Psalm 33:11

JESUS SAID “Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will not pass away. Matthew 24:35 Mark 13:31 Luke 21:33
WHAT DOES THE THOUGHTS OF A BIBLE ILLITERATE MATTER?

    THEY DONT ACTUALLY

  17. RE HAPPY GOOD FRIDAY TO ALL!

THERE IS ACTUALLY NOTHING WRONG IN SAYING THAT AT ALL WHEN ONE CONSIDERS THAT ON THE FIRST GOOD FRIDAY THAT THE LORD JESUS CHRIST PAID THE PRICE FOR THE SALVATION OF ALL MEN

    THIS IS SOMETHING WORTH CELEBRATING

IN MY CHURCH GROUP THIS EVENT IS CELEBRATED EVERY SUNDAY MORNING AT THE BREAKING OF BREAD ALL OVER THE WORLD
THIS HAS BEEN THE CASE LONG LONG LONG BEFORE TRUMP

  18. that is why i posted it.

i thought it was a great gesture from the greatest president USA has ever had.

HAPPY GOOD FRIDAY TO ALL BU POSTERS

  19. Today we celebrate the death of Jesus. Did you catch that odd juxtaposition of words?

    We celebrate…the death…

One of my children asked me, “Daddy, why do we call Good Friday ‘good’? Isn’t it the day Jesus died?”

What a great question. Why would anyone call one of the worst ways to die…let alone inflicted upon the only innocent person, “good”?

    Why would Paul write this:

    Galatians 6:14

But far be it from me to boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ,

by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.

THE event, THE truth in which Paul boasts (glories in, takes pleasure in, assigns value in, rejoices in) is THE CROSS of Christ.

In context I think Paul was contrasting the way of faith versus the way of self-made, self-obtained, righteousness (works). Paul would rather rejoice in Jesus’ work than his own. Paul knew the law gave NO power of obedience. Paul knew the futility of trying to keep the law in his own strength. He saw in Jesus’ death….FREEDOM. Jesus kept the law in Paul’s place.

Paul would NOT boast in his works…he will boast in Jesus’. The work of Christ, both satisfying God’s righteous wrath AND earning perfect righteous are, here, alluded to by the concept of the cross.

In what OR whom do you boast?

In what or whom do you seek joy? Upon what or whom are your hopes and dreams fixed?

May you rejoice in the “joy set before Him” (Heb 12:2)…rejoice in the glad-hearted obedience of Jesus. Rejoice in the finished work of Christ.

Remember…the cross IS NOT a testimony to your worth. The Cross of Christ is a testimony to our wickedness and HIS Worth.

    Blessings in the Crucified One,

    HAPPY GOOD FRIDAY TO ALL

THIS STATEMENT IS BASED ON SOUND INTERPRETATION OF SCRIPTURE

I never made a judgement of your understanding. Your understanding is personal. It needs no validation from me.

  22. @ GP April 10, 2020 12:02 PM
“Jesus has to talk about hell because it is the fate that awaits all people apart from him. Because of Adam’s sin, we’re all guilty and deserve God’s eternal punishment. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

With NO exceptions to that default dogmatic rule, right?

Not even those innocent little children who have never ever seen a star pitch but died as a result of some road accident, airplane crash, a terrorist attack or from one of many child disease not of their own making.

What about the thousands of baby boys slaughtered by King Herod so that your baby Jesus could live and become your Lord and Saviour? Are they still suffering in hell?

Didn’t the same Jesus ask you to suffer (allow) the little children to come unto him have no meaning in your strict black or white version of sin?

From what we are taking away from your most unchristian sermon is that none of your favourite people, the Jews and their friend Trump, will be going to your brand of heaven on that great judgement day.

For it was the Jews who caused the crucifixion of Jesus on this day of shame and up to this day they have not asked for forgiveness of that most unpardonable sin of killing Yahweh’s only boy child.

  23. FREEDOM CRIER

THANKS FOR BOTH THE GOOD WISHES AND THE GOOD SONG

    VINCENT

RE I never made a judgement of your understanding. YOU ARE NOT EQUIPPED TO MAKE A JUDGEMENT OF MY UNDERSTANDING OR INTERPRETATION OF THE WORD OF GOD

    RE Your understanding is personal.
JUST AS THAT OF EVERYONE ELSE, EVEN IF IT IS WRONG

RE It needs no validation from me.
YOU CANT YOU ARE NOT EQUIPPED BECAUSE YOU CAN NOT RIGHTLY DIVIDE THE WORD FOR ALL THE TEA IN CEYLON!

    MILLER
YOU AGAIN DEMONSTRATE YOUR APPALLING IGNORANCE AND UNDERSTANDING

RE “Jesus has to talk about hell because it is the fate that awaits all people apart from him. Because of Adam’s sin, we’re all guilty and deserve God’s eternal punishment. Contrary to popular belief, hell is not a place where God sends those who have been especially bad; it’s our default destination. We need a rescuer or we stand condemned.”

THIS IS THE CLEAR TEACHING OF THE BIBLE

YOUR STUPID STATEMENTS ILLUSTRATE THAT YOU DO NOT KNOW THE SCRIPTURES THAT CLEARLY POINT OUT THE OTHER SIDE OF THAT COIN

    HERE IS ONE VERSE

1 John 1:9 King If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

HERE ARE A FEW OTHER WELL KNOWN ONES
John 3:15-19 King James Version (KJV)
15 That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.

16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.

18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.

AND THE NEXT IMPORTANT ONE IN CHAPTER 3

John 3:36 He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.

    AND AGAIN

    JOHN 5: 24- 29
24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.

25 Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live.

    26 For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself;

27 And hath given him authority to execute judgment also, because he is the Son of man.

28 Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice,

29 And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.

NOW YOU HAVE HEARD THE WORD
YOU HAVE NO EXCUSE FOR YOUR DEEP IGNORANCE

YOUR STUPID ATTEMPTS OF HARRANGE RE LITTLE CHILDREN ILLUSTRATES THAT YOU HAVE NOT HEARD ABOUT THE AGE OF ACCOUNTABILITY. I WILL NOT ENLIGHTEN YOU

  24. STUPID MILLER

READ THIS AGAIN I KNOW YOU HAVE READ IT ALREADY

    REVELATION 20

And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them.

12 And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.

13 And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.

14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.

15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

    THAT IS THE BAD NEWS!

NOW TURN TO COLOSSIANS 2 FOR THE GOOD NEWS THAT HAPPENED ON GOOD FRIDAY THAT IS CAUSE FOR CELEBRATION

    13 And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses;

    14 Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;

15 And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.

16 Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days:

    VERSE 14 IS TOO SWEET!

HERE PAUL USES AN ILLUSTRATION FROM HIS EXPERIENCE IN PRISON, AND SOMETHING THAT IS STILL PRACTICED IN PRISONS—INCLUDING OURS.

I USED TO GO UP TO GLENDAIRY TO SEE THE PRISONERS
ON THE CELL DOORS THERE WAS A CARD ON THE DOOR THAT HAD THE PRISONERS NAME, CRIME AND SENTENCE. THE ADMISSION BOOK HAD THE SAME INFORMATION, AND SO DID THE CARDS ON WHICH YOU MADE YOUR NOTES

ALL HAD THE PRISONERS NAME, CRIME AND SENTENCE.

THIS WAS THE handwriting of ordinances that was against THESE PRISONERS

WE WERE ALL PRISONERS OF SATAN SELF AND SIN AND SOME STILL ARE

AND THE BOOKS MENTIONED IN REVELATION 20 V 12 CONTAINS A RECORD OF OUR SINS—–IT IS THE handwriting of ordinances that was against US.

    BUT WHEN JESUS DIED THAT FIRST GOOD FRIDAY HE MADE PROVISION FOR ALL THAT WOULD BELIEVE ON HIS NAME BY Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;

NOW THE NAMES OF THE BELIEVERS CAN BE FOUND in the book of life OF REVELATION 20:V 15

GOOD FRIDAY IS INDEED A DAY OF CELEBRATION FRIENDS

  25. All can preach or teach of Hell come what may but the word of God stands with principles which unless man can remove the mote out of their eye formed in deceit and hyoocrisy
Mankind cannot enter the kingdom of Heaven
I see idolatry fashioned in the form of tradition practiced on this high holy day called the passover
There is only two things jesus called on all to practice and adhere
    Love God and love mankind
These two laws are stapled within the 10 commandments

  26. I was a product of The Easter and other holiday tradotions based on religious teaching
    But no more
My thinking is steeped in what Christ taught and not in the interpretations of Man
Christ death is representative of a man who gave his life for justice for all
Which represents selfishness courage and having immeasurably spiritual rewards for those who belive in him and practice his teachings

“BUT WHEN JESUS DIED THAT FIRST GOOD FRIDAY HE MADE PROVISION FOR ALL THAT WOULD BELIEVE ON HIS NAME BY Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;..”
    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Yes, Master Preacher man, the “MILLER” is most grateful for the scolding you have administered to the stupid boy who refuses to be recruited in your Jesus ‘white’ army. Just call the miller the private Pike and not Cpt .Mainwaring.

However, in spite of your bluster and bullshit, you still have not answered the ‘innocently’ childlike question about that important date in your religious calendar:

Why is that “FIRST GOOD FRIDAY” subsequently celebrated on differing Fridays totally unlike the birth of your sweet baby Jesus on the 25th December, annually?

If Jesus was crucified on the second in April why not “celebrate” that day as the actual date of his Crucifixion?

Why are you Xtians confusing people of other faiths including pagans like the miller with the following:
    Good Friday 2017: April 14.
    Good Friday 2018: March 30.
    Good Friday 2019: April 19.
    And now
    Good Friday 2020: April 10.

After all, a man (unless he is a make-believe god) can only be born from a human virgin on a specific date like the 25th December of any year.

So how can the same ‘son of woman’ be killed on any Friday between the start of the vernal equinox (a pagan landmark) and that Friday following the first full moon after the same equinox?

Sounds more like a pagan celebration of renewal of life wrapped in a Jewish tradition of sacrifice of one to save the many from the viral vengeance of Yahweh.

Despite its ‘variable’ date, what a good opportunity of catharsis for the human spirit after the death of winter; especially at these most trying of times of trials and tribulations!

  29. MY ANSWER TO YOU IS VERY SIMPLE AND IT IS BIBLICAL

    2 TIMOTHY 2: VERSES 14-16

14 Of these things put them in remembrance, charging them before the Lord that they strive not about words to no profit, but to the subverting of the hearers.

15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

16 But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness.

AND AT THE END OF THIS CHAPTER VERSES 23-26
23 But foolish and unlearned questions avoid, knowing that they do gender strifes.

24 And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient,

    25 In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth;

26 And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will.

You are a Bible literalist. You are in the company of some great people.

    STICK TO WHAT YOU KNOW

MARIPOSA IS AN IRRITANT AND IGNORANT OF WHAT SHE SPEAKS
IN THIS SPHERE SHE IS A WANNABE THAT WILL NEVER BE
INSTEAD OF WRITING RUBBISH ON THIS BLOG EVERY SUNDAY SHE SHOULD TAKE THE BIBLE DOWN AND READ AND SEEK GUIDANCE IN GETTING SOMEONE TO EXPLAIN WHAT SHE IS READING

YOU WILL NOTICE THAT I REFUSE TO RESPOND TO HER EVERY WEEK.
WHEN MY LADS WERE TODDLERS THEY HAD A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF THE BIBLE THAN SHE WILL EVER HAVE

YOU SHOW YOUR UTTER IGNORANCE OF THE WORD YOURSELF IN YOUR ATTEMPT TO DEFEND HER.

  30. GP i do not care for your responses
I speak with my own voice
Just because you have your beliefs it doesn’t mean some other persons beliefs are wrong
You can never and will never come to an understanding which is written in the ten commandments that God does not like idolatry in any form
Thou shalt make unto God any graven image or any image that is liken to God
Thou shalt no bow down to them or worship God
For i the lord God am a jealous God
Would not be surprise if you argue or cuss God if God met with u. face to face and disagree with u
Where does it say in the bible that all these man made traditions are to be followed

  31. Step aside

    I do the music here

    I get deep

  32. From the time I realized Trump was something different I hoped he would not like most humans flatter to deceive.

I listened carefully to hear when he would betray himself with his words.

I heard him claim to be a good Christian early and I thought you know I never heard any Christian claim to be good and I thought here it is.

I know how imperfect (far from good) I am.

I also heard him say words to the effect that the Bible says “an eye for an eye” and thought but isn’t Christianity about forgiveness?

In both utterances I realise he was right.

I think good Christians accept they are imperfect and unable to be perfect on their own.

    They become slaves to righteousness.

It is like they are bound.

They falter and engage in unrighteous activities and then wonder how can they return but they return because God makes everything possible.

He finds them and shows them the way back.

It is a different kind of slavery.

The straying sheep is found by the shepherd and the runaway invariably returns.

… and the Bible does indeed say an eye for an eye and Christianity is about forgiveness.

    GP

I think your analysis of the Good in Good Friday in the comments was wonderful and I loved it.

Trump is different from any politician I have ever seen.

People don’t take the time to understand him.

Invariably he says something that makes me stop and think.

I pray God keeps him safe and well and on track.

    So far so Good.
