Prime Minister Mia Mottley  advised the country tonight that Barbados will impose a curfew from 8PM to 6AM starting on Saturday 28 March 2020  until 14 April 2020. On a personal note the Prime Minister also shared she will be MIA for a while because her medical team advised her to undergo a medical procedure this coming weekend. Minister of Education Santia Bradshaw will act as prime minister. The blogmaster wishes her well.

  3. Our economy is plummeting. Mass unemployment everywhere we look.

And what are those arrogant, aloof former DLP ministers doing? They collect high pensions. If Mariposa were not so obscene, she would donate half of her ministerial pension to the people. If Inniss was not so selfish, he would donate 100 BDSM masks from his entertainment to the QEH.

  4. Those countries you mentioned probably developed immunity.

No at all. It is new virus not previously detected in humans. Hence the name novel coronavirus.

“There are still several burning questions that have not been answered by Ministry of Health authorities in the death of 77-year-old Hansel Leon, a US citizen who succumbed to complications from the COVID-19 on Wednesday close to noon at the Couva Hospital. The one thing that seems certain, however, is that the Ministry’s of Health’s contact tracing net for persons he may have come into contact with will have to be cast wide.

During a post-Cabinet media briefing opn Thursday, Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Dr Roshan Parasram skirted around several questions raised about Leon and failed to give clear answers on when the patient was first admitted to a medical facility before he was later transferred to the Couva Hospital, where his condition worsened.

But Guardian Media was able to obtain some vital information not only concerning Leon’s travel but also his activity over the last few weeks with a friend of the man’s relatives.

Senior immigration sources told Guardian Media that Leon, who was staying at his sister’s house in South Trinidad, arrived in the country on flight BW521 on February 7 from New York. The man also visited Trinidad last year, arriving on February 20 and leaving on March 22 – senior immigration sources added.

“He comes every year for Carnival,” a family friend said Thursday”

  6. On last night CBC’s TV discussion about COVID 19 a caller asked if front line medical personnel were being tested and the response was negative. Stage 3 is supposed to be a Public Health Emergency why not incorporate the testing of Emergency personnel into that stage? Our approach seems to mirror British common law (Innocent until proven guilty) why not turn that on its head in this environment i.e. guilty until proven innocent?

John…i would worry more about the super carriers, regular Typhoid Marys but even deadlier..

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I am not a doctor but ….!!!! … here is my simple logic.

“The damage caused to the lungs by smoking makes patients more susceptible to pulmonary infections, both bacterial and viral [6]. Smokers are 34% more likely than non-smokers to contract the flu [6]. Han and colleagues conclude that literature evidence showed that smoking was consistently associated with a higher risk of hospital admissions after influenza infection [7].”

    https://www.mdpi.com/2077-0383/9/3/841/htm

Smokers are more likely to get flu.

A smoker exhales and spreads smoke and thus lung contents at higher velocity than if/he/she were just breathing.

A smoker is probably the super carrier or Typhoid Mary of which you speak.

    Simple logic.

Males smoke more than females, most children don’t smoke.

Simple fact also, a smoker’s lung capacity falls with age.

    Total Lung Capacity
The total lung capacity, or the total amount of air you can breathe in taking the deepest breath possible is decreased by smoking in several ways. Smoking can result in damage to muscles in the chest reducing the expansion necessary to take a deep breath. The elasticity of the smooth muscle in the airways is likewise affected, and combined with the loss of elasticity, can limit the amount of air breathed in as well.

And at a microscopic level, when fewer alveoli are present (due to destruction by cigarette smoke), or air can’t reach the alveoli (due to cigarette-related damage to the airways and build up of mucus), the intake of breath is also affected. These forces all work together to decrease lung capacity.

  16. @ Quaker John

I suggest you stick to your smoking thesis – it is bollocks, but you carry on. The new virus is no respecter of health, race, gender or age; these factors may influence recovery, but not infection. The virus and its transmission is still a known unknown.
Of those who caught the disease, what is the ratio of smokers to non-smokers? What about types of food; degree of physical fitness; body mass index; alcohol intake? How many ate pig meat?
You also have this racist thing about Chinese. As I have pointed out elsewhere, the virus CAN be produce in a laboratory. That is what biological warfare is about. The geographical location of the discovery was a coincidence, unless you are a Trump disciple..
Your reasoning is illogical and not worthy of a first year philosophy student. Read anything by Michael Dummett on analytical reasoning. I know it is not a BU strong point.
By the way, Dummett was also strongly opposed to racism and nationalism, along with his wife Ann. He saw racism as illogical.

I have literature on this topic but cannot locate it right now. What I have done is a short review of the literature online giving the salient facts. The fact that the organism is gram negative means it is difficult to treat. The cell wall is hindering factor

Legionella acquired its name after an outbreak of a then-unknown “mystery disease” sickened 221 persons, causing 34 deaths. The outbreak was first noticed among people attending a convention of the American Legion—an association of U.S. military veterans. The convention occurred in Philadelphia during the U.S. Bicentennial year in July 21–24, 1976. This epidemic among U.S. war veterans, occurring in the same city a
“Legionnaires’ disease doesn’t spread from person to person. Instead, the bacteria spreads through mist, such as from air-conditioning units for large buildings. Adults over the age of 50 and people with weak immune systems, chronic lung disease, or heavy tobacco use are most at risk.
Many people exposed to the bacteria don’t develop symptoms. Those who do develop symptoms may experience cough, fever, chills, shortness of breath, muscle aches, headaches, and diarrhea.Legionnaires’ disease is a severe form of pneumonia — lung inflammation usually caused by infection. It’s caused by a bacterium known as legionella.
Legionnaire’s disease can be treated with antibiotics.

The bacterium Legionella pneumophila is responsible for most cases of Legionnaires’ disease. Outdoors, legionella bacteria survive in soil and water, but rarely cause infections. However, legionella bacteria can multiply in water systems made by humans, such as air conditioners.

Although it’s possible to get Legionnaires’ disease from home plumbing, most outbreaks have occurred in large buildings, perhaps because complex systems allow the bacteria to grow and spread more easily. Also, home and car air conditioning units don’t use water for cooling.
    How the infection spreads
Most people become infected when they inhale microscopic water droplets containing legionella bacteria. This might be from the spray from a shower, faucet or whirlpool, or water from the ventilation system in a large building. Outbreaks have been linked to:

    Hot tubs and whirlpools
Cooling towers in air conditioning systems
    Hot water tanks and heaters
    Decorative fountains
    Swimming pools
    Birthing pools
    Drinking water
Besides by breathing in water droplets, the infection can be transmitted in other ways, including:

Aspiration. This occurs when liquids accidentally enter your lungs, usually because you cough or choke while drinking. If you aspirate water containing legionella bacteria, you can develop Legionnaires’ disease.
Soil. A few people have contracted Legionnaires’ disease after working in a garden or using contaminated potting soil.

The genus Legionella is a pathogenic group of Gram-negative bacteria that includes the species L. pneumophila, causing legionellosis[3] (all illnesses caused by Legionella) including a pneumonia-type illness called Legionnaires’ disease and a mild flu-like illness called Pontiac fever.[3]

Legionella may be visualized with a silver stain or cultured in cysteine-containing media such as buffered charcoal yeast extract agar. It is common in many environments, including soil and aquatic systems, with at least 50 species and 70 serogroups identified. These bacteria, however, are not transmissible from person to person;[4] furthermore, most people exposed to the bacteria do not become ill.[5] Most outbreaks are traced to poorly maintained cooling towers.

The side chains of the cell wall carry the bases responsible for the somatic antigen specificity of these organisms. The chemical composition of these side chains both with respect to components and arrangement of the different sugars determines the nature of the somatic or O antigen determinants, which are essential means of serologically classifying many Gram-negative bacteria.

  22. STATES WELCOME BACK SINGLE-USE PLASTIC BAGS TO AVOID CONTAMINATION

    https://media.breitbart.com/media/2020/03/milk-in-plastic-bag-grocery-shopping-file-getty-640×480.jpg

Dr. Susan Berry 27 Mar 2020

States that introduced “green” regulations that taxed single-use plastic grocery bags in an effort to eventually annihilate them are now welcoming them back as health officials caution of possible contamination with reusable bags.

Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont (D) said Thursday he was suspending the ten-cent tax on single-use plastic bags at grocery stores and other retail businesses as one of his actions “to mitigate the spread of COVID-19.”

“The latter move is to curb the use of personal bags that could bring the virus into a store,” reported the Journal Inquirer.

Neighboring Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker (R) banned reusable bags in stores this week and lifted bans on plastic bags as well “as part of his administration’s latest steps to limit the spread of the coronavirus,” reported the Boston Business Journal.

“Baker announced Wednesday that stores cannot charge for either paper or plastic bags, which in some communities have previously cost 5 cents per bag,” noted the report.

New York State and Maine will also delay enforcement of their bans on single-use plastic bags.

In New York, a lawsuit challenging the ban on plastic bags has also been delayed because of the coronavirus crisis.

Basil Seggos, commissioner of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, disagreed with a postponement of the plastic bag ban and tweeted:

New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu (R) issued an order Saturday banning reusable bags at stores, asserting they pose a risk of spreading the coronavirus:

In order to prevent the spread of COVID-19 through grocery sales, and to promote and secure the safety and protection of the people of New Hampshire … all grocery stores … and any other establishment within this State offering groceries for sale, shall transition to exclusive use of store provided single use plastic or paper bags when bagging groceries or other products for customers.

  23. @ Robert

Ok thanks so much. I was wondering if unused water in pipes of closed businesses, or swimming pools for instance would be a risk in closed entities. AC Units that sat unused for a while and then activated are also my concern.

So the symptoms of legionaires are very similar to Covid 19?

  24. “Are these the SAME Bajans who buckled down (in the main) to directives for hurricane preparedness in the last few years… (yes, they were outliers who didnt obey as they were too in S. Korea with the religious group)…but had the local admin implemented strict protocols then I expect that Bajans in the main would HAVE complied.”

I do believe that like the Caribbean, South Korea experiences typhoon/storms/hurricanes and so our behavior and theirs may be similar. This does not mean that our behavior to communicable disease will be similar. What you expect may not be the reality.

    Good try, no cigar.

The difference is in the recovery.

Do you accept my infection theory?

Would have been identical for any kind of flu arriving on the scene at the same time!!

We will probably find that if there is another flu around it too will have spread in the same areas as COVID-19 has spread!!

Just a matter of numbers carrying it, like COVID-19.

I suspect it is slowing, like New York.

    Numbers show it.

Up to 19th March, Canada has tested more than 50,000.

As of now, 9 days later, cases in Canada number 5,576.

    https://www.politico.com/news/2020/03/19/canada-has-tested-more-than-50-000-people-for-covid-19-is-that-enough-137028

I would suggest Canada’s infection rate is high in population centres where the New Year celebrations were held.

In Quebec (French), there was also a carnival so it will be higher than those areas where pre Lenten celebrations were not held.

In most of Canada it will be low.

It looks like half the cases in Canada are in Quebec.

2,500 cases in Quebec up to today.

  31. It goes for the lungs.

  32. It isn’t age alone that matters, rather the co-morbid conditions and these all have a link to smoking.

  33. If Canada tested 50,000 people and turned up far less than 5,000 cases it CANNOT be that contagious in normal comings and goings.

COVID-19 has created the stir it has because of its effect on New York and other major population centres in the world, Quebec included.

My thinking is that it was allowed in and given the opportunity to spread to large groups of people concentrated in those centres artificially for celebrations.

If China is used, the number of cases reported was about 81K.

The population of China is 1,4 billion.

81K expressed as a percentage of 1.4 billion is extremely small.

I also think COVID-19 kills in the at risk population.

I believe it will pass soon … until the next one.

Social distancing is probably the major way of overcoming it.

THE BARBADIAN AUTHORITIES ARE SO DAMN GOOD THAT THE VIRUS IS NOT GOING TO BE SPREADING DURING 14hrs A DAY FOR NEXT 2 WEEKS WHEN PEOPLE ARE FREE TO ROAM?

OR DOES BARBADOS RESEARCH SHOWS THAT THE CORONAVIRUS IS ONLY EFFECTIVE AT SPREADING DURING 8pm and 6am FOR 10hrs A DAY DURING THE NIGHT?

WOULD A 24hr LOCKDOWN EXCEPTION FOR ESSENTIAL BUSINESSES AND PERSONNEL NOT HAVE BEEN THE MOVE WITH PEOPLE ONLY BEING ALLOWED TO VENTURE OUT FOR GROCERIES OR EMERGENCIES WHILST PRACTICISING SOCIAL DISTANCING WHEN ALLOWED A FEW TIMES DURING THE 2 WEEK PERIOD FOR SHORT TIME SPANS MINIMIZING CHANGES OF CONTACT?

MASS TESTING COULD ALSO BE DONE EFFECTIVELY DURING 24HR LOCKDOWN.

LOCAL BARBADIANS ARE VERY STRANGE THINKERS, BUT WHO SAYS COMMON SENSE IS COMMON.

  38. MINIMIZING CHANCES OF CONTACT?

  39. @ John A March 28, 2020 6:14 PM
In some respects. Remember it is a bacterial infection and can easily be handled using antibiotics. I should really qualify that by saying if there are no antibiotic resistant genes present

  43. No quarantine.

Here you see the management style of Trump.

He suggests he may have to consider a quarantine.

    Cuomo gets vex.

He then brings the three governors together to talk through the options.

Gets their buy in and gives them the responsibility to enforce a strict travel advisory.

I would suggest that this is indicative of the situation in New York improving.

  44. Back to figures from Indonesia and Thailand.

It is possible to suggest that if you smoke and get COVID-19, it may be as much as 10X more likely you will die,

Indonesia has a median age of 30, Thailand is close to us, 37.7.

Indonesia’s younger median age does not help it.

There may be other factors involved but smoking is one that can’t be ignored.
