This is the most important way of dealing with the pandemic because without data about infection rates we are simply pissing into the wind with every other measure that we take.

    If the US press concentrated more on the known facts of the virus spread and spent less time trying to get Trump people would not be so riled up over the virus and would view it in perspective.

    My bet is it will backfire on the US press once more.

    They never learn.

    The virus will pass, until the next one.

    The economy will recover until it falters again.

    GUANGZHOU, China — The Cantonese people of south China are legendary for eating anything that moves — and some things that are still moving. The food market here features cats, raccoons, owls, doves and snakes along with bear and tiger’s paw, dried deer penis and decomposed monkey skeletons.

    Now, this rich culinary tradition, along with rising disposable income in this most prosperous city in China, has inspired kitchen utensil salesman Zhang Guoxun to open what is believed to be China’s first restaurant dedicated to serving rat.

    That’s right: Rat. Rat with Chestnut and Duck. Lemon Deep Fried Rat. Satayed Rat Slices with Vermicelli. In fact, the menu lists 30 different rat dishes, even including Liquored Rat Flambe, along with more mundane dishes such as Hot Pepper Silkworm, Raccoon With Winter Melon and Sliced Snake and Celery. And in the six months since the doors opened, customers have been scampering in at all hours to the euphemistically named Jialu (Superior to Deer) Restaurant.

    “I was always eating out, but I got bored with the animals that restau- rants offered,” Mr. Zhang says during an interview over a plate of Black- Bean Rat. “I wanted to open a restaurant with an affordable exotic animal. Then I was walking home one night and a rat ran across in front of me and gave me this idea.”

    Mr. Zhang’s restaurant is as trendy as they come in China. The 15-table, two-story eatery is a mixture of blond wood furniture, stucco walls and wooden lattice laced with plastic vines. Tonight’s crowd includes a young couple who stroll in hand-in-hand and nestle in a quiet corner for a romantic rat dinner. Other groups include engineers, office clerks, salesmen and factory workers.

    Tonight’s special is Braised Rat. Garnished with sprigs of cilantro, the morsels of rat meat are swaddled in crispy rat skin. The first nibble reveals a rubbery texture. But the skin coats one’s teeth with a stubborn slime. The result is a bit like old chewing gum covered with Crisco.

    But other dishes are better. German Black Pepper Rat Knuckle (rat should- ers, actually; the knuckles are too small) tastes like a musty combination of chicken and pork. The rat soup, with delicate threads of rat meat mixed with thinly sliced potatoes and onions, is surprisingly sweet. Far and away most appealing to the Western palate is Rat Kabob. The skewers of char- coaled rat fillet are enlivened with slices of onion, mushroom and green pepper and served smothered in barbecue sauce on sizzling iron plates that are shaped like cows.

    Also on the menu: a Nest of Snake and Rat, Vietnamese Style Rat Hot Pot, a Pair of Rats Wrapped in Lotus Leaves, Salted Rat with Southern Baby Peppers, Salted Cunning Rats, Fresh Lotus Seed Rat Stew, Seven-Color Rat Threads, Dark Green Unicorn Rat — and, of course, Classic Steamed Rat. Generally, the presentation is quite elegant, with some dishes served with lemon slices or scallions forming a border and others with carrots carved into flower shapes.

    Experienced rat eaters, however, warn that this is no meat to pig out on. “Watch out,” warns Wei Xiuwen, a factory manager eating at an adjacent table. “If you eat too much rat, you get a nosebleed.” Several customers take off their shirts halfway through the meal because eating rat, like dog, seems to raise the body temperature for some reason. That’s why rat is considered a winter food. In the summer, the restaurant does most of its business during the late-night and early-morning hours, after the weather cools down.

    The restaurant is popular — Mr. Zhang claims profits of $2,000 a month — because it brings people back to their roots. The restaurant’s cooks, and most customers, are originally from the countryside, where as children they ate air-dried rat meat. “If dried by a north wind, it tastes just like duck,” Che Yongcheng, an engineer and regular customer, says wistfully of his favorite childhood snack.

    For newcomers, Mr. Zhang has color brochures, featuring a photo of Rat Kabobs alongside a bottle of Napoleon X.O. In both the menu and brochure, the rats are referred to as “super deer” because Mr. Zhang says he wants to separate his fare from the common sewer rats that even Cantonese might find unappetizing. Mr. Zhang says his restaurant serves only free range rats, wild rodents that feed on fruits and vegetables in the mountains a couple of hundred kilometers to the north.

    The brochure explains why rats are the health food for the 1990s. It says the rats are rich in 17 amino acids, vitamin E and calcium. Eating them promises to prevent hair loss, revive the male libido, cure premature senility, relieve tension and reduce phlegm. A rat’s “liver, gallbladder, fat, brain, head, eye, saliva, bone, skin” are “useful for medical treatment,” says the brochure.

    The restaurant’s basement kitchen is a Dante’s Inferno where shirtless cooks sweat over huge woks atop howling gasfueled stoves that shoot flames five feet in the air. Dozens of fat, ready-to-cook rats are piled in a bamboo basket next to a crust-covered pump that noisily slurps up a small river of scum that runs off the stove and across the floor.

    The senior chef is not here tonight. An understudy, Huang Lingtun, clad in rubber sandals and pants rolled up to his knees, explains how the rats are rounded up. They’re captured and cleaned by farmers who free-lance as rat bounty hunters. Some smoke the rats out by setting fields on fire and snaring the fleeing rats in nets attached to long bamboo poles. Others string wires across fields to stun unsuspecting rodents with high voltage charges. The rats, each about a half-pound, arrive at the restaurant freshly gutted, beheaded and de-tailed.

    Mr. Zhang says that the traditional recipes on his menu were suggested by Tang Qixin, a farmer honored as a model worker by Mao in 1958 for his prowess as a rat killer. Rat eradication campaigns have been a staple of Chinese life since Mao declared war on the four pests — rats, flies, mosquitoes and bed bugs — in the 1950s.

    In 1984, the last Year of the Rat, the government launched an all-out crusade in which an estimated 526 million rats were killed. In 1985, the government tried to maintain the momentum by promoting rat meat as good food, explaining that “rats are better looking than sea slugs and cleaner than chickens and pigs.”

    Like most successful entrepreneurs during these times of shifting poli- tical winds in China, Mr. Zhang is quick to highlight the patriotic nature of his business rather than the personal economic benefits. “I am helping the government by eliminating some pests and helping enrich some farmers,” he says.

    Mr. Zhang says he’s too new to the business to think about a chain of rat restaurants. But he says he’s unconcerned about anyone stealing his idea. “My quality is tops,” he says, “so I’m not worried about competitors.””

    I have no problem with the Chinese eating dogs and so on. We are dealing with what is known as eating habits. If one is born into a society eating dogs, eating of dog meat becomes the norm. The French eat snails and the British age meat until gets ripe and smell. This done to allow the break down of proteins by proteolytic enzymes present in the meat: the meat becomes soft and tender and more flavorsome as a result.

    We eat black pudding and souse from the entrails of Pigs in Barbados. Pigs eat anything. Chinese are also big pig meat eaters. Vietnamese eat all kinds of animals and insects. One restaurant in Tottenham Court Road is always crowded with Brits at lunchtimes, experimenting with these new foods.
    The point is Wuhan is the geographical location of the coronavirus; normally the virus jumps species from animal to human. But that does not mean in this particular instance it has.
    My argument is that it could also be created in laboratories. That is what biological warfare is all about. In this instance we do not know the source of the virus.
    What we do know, however, is that Trump has launched a vicious trade war against China. So, it is legitimate to ask, is the virus part of that war?

    There is an arrangement agreed upon at the international level, that facilitate the monitoring of new strains of the flu virus each year in China. The Chinese like all government tend to want to cover and put economics before people’s health. what happened to the scientist who first tried to raise the alarm in China? It is like space shuttle in the USA, the scientists warned about the O ring but they were ignored. China has been caught with its pants down and is doing like all governments trying to play the blame gain. Do some research on the annual monitoring of flu strains in China and the manufacture of annual flu vaccines

    A barbadian national came into barbados recently from England and has put herself in self quaratine
    When asked if on arrival what was the necessary protocol her response was to say ” nothing was said to her in particular about having to self quarantine but was handed sanitizers and wipes
    Cant imangine that at this late stage in the game govt ability to get a clear handle of all necessary information from people coming from infected spots
    Most of whom are tired after long journeys and are stressed out after going through long lines and then again having to go through a similar routine on arrival through immigration

    In this situation we must beware of the panic that the DLP is stirring up here on BU. Unlike the muzzlers and cowards in Trixidad, our government does everything right. Our government will guide us safely through this storm. God is a Bajan.

    There hasn’t been a new Corona case for days. There is no evidence whatsoever that Corona is spreading as rapidly in the tropics as it has in the north. Otherwise the tourists would infect all Barbadians in every winter with the colds they bring to our island.

    We just have to keep a cool head.

    However, it will soon be time to talk about the strong links between the DLP and the Chinese Communist Party. The people have a right to know why the former DLP government has signed so many treaties with China. Mariposa aka DLP president owes us an explanation.

    Thanks, but I shall pass on the “rat du jour” and the “rat vermicelli”, and take the VO on my way out. As to eating these poor creatures to prevent “hair loss”, I shall stick with Rogaine?? or some other product in the local Walgreens or CVS.

    Hopefully, there is no connection with transmitting the virus from a wet market in Wuhan. Who knows? But, the situation might recur sometime in the future, no?

    What is vicious about getting your country to start back making the products the greedy elites outsourced to avoid paying their own country men? The US and other western countries are now experiencing a shortage of the products that they invented. Only an idiot with no sense of nationalist pride would tolerate such. In any case from personal experience the shoes and sneakers are sub-standard. Some time back there was a BBC program interviewing Africans on the same topic. The trend was all about the fact that the Chinese products were poorly made. The relaunching of manufacturing is a nail in the coffin of globalization.

    Why couldn’t it be made by the Chinese? The PH.D’s that Chinese have were all trained in the US or Europe. China has a germ warfare center.. What point are you trying to make It could also be the Japanese. They had a biological unit 731 stationed in Manchuria in China during the 1930-1945.Made a lot of toxins which were weaponized and carried out experiments on the Chinese. The Americans did not jailed General Shiro Ishii, the commander of Unit 731.He was put on their payroll because the US was far behind in the research. It is like the grab for German rocket experts at the end of world war 2.. You have a myopic view of things due to your animus towards America. When push come to shove white British are going to treat their kith and kin first and others after.

    China did not put a gun against the head of US industry and compelled them to outsource. You may be a good scientist, but a lousy economist. Wall Street demanded the outsourcing, and in the process sabotaged US industry. Trump’s policy was based on right-wing nationalism, coated with anti Obama racism.
    The point is that Trump’s obsession could have led to his launching a biological war against the Chinese. Whatever you may think about Chinese goods and science, America is seriously threatened. It is a nation in decline.
    Both the Chinese and Americans are enemies of black people, even those black people who have no consciousness of who they are.
    The Americans wanted cheap goods and an exaggerated lifestyle. They got this in two ways: US$3tsrn of Chinese loans lodged in Treasusries and cheap goods.
    You do not have to be an expert to know that if a television set is manufactured in China, shipped across the Pacific to the US West Coast, then transported across the US to the east coast, and sold for US$1, that something is wrong. This happened in the late 2000s at Walmart.
    Trump’s interest is racist and reactionary, there is not a single redeeming feature about the vile and obnoxious Donald Trump.
    I can understand why some white Barbadians may find him appealing, but for a black Bajan it convinces me more than ever of the Bajan Condition.
    I go back to a youth terrorised by watchmen, Island Constables, who would chase and beat up young lads for stealing sugar cane; to detectives who made their reputations by beating up black people (ask Prof Frank Alleyne about his father one of those detectives).
    Or look at the contemporary magistrates, At most two or three generations away from domestics and the same watchmen, who treat ordinary Barbadians like dirt, when they themselves have nothing to set them apart – neither intelligence, money, or common decency – apart from anger and bitterness.
    This is our island home.

    I had 2 uncles, one on each side of the family who were real serious rum drinkers, both made it to three score, plus ten and more. I don’t know how they did it. Maternal grandad ran a rum/grocery shop. My mum worked there from time to time. I appreciate a little spirits from time to time. But I only did the drunken thing once, when I was about 25. Did not like it. Never did it again.

    I took another stroll into town. This morning Bay Street was nearly bereft of traffic. A funeral was being held at Bethel Church. The mourners seemed to be following the guides put out by government. The crowd was paltry. The lines at the supermarkets have declined. Expect to see a rise in the length of the waiting lines tomorrow. Lines also outside banks waiting to enter the banks and some to use the ATM (the latter were mounted externally). All of the rubble from the demolished National Insurance building and fire station have been carted away.

    Coronavirus: Pangolins found to carry viruses related to Covid-19

    Pangolins smuggled into China have been confirmed to contain viruses closely related to the one sweeping the world.

    Sale of the animals in wildlife markets should be strictly prohibited to minimise the risk of future outbreaks, says an international team.

    Pangolins are the most-commonly illegally trafficked mammal, used both as food and in traditional medicine.

    Bats are thought to be the original viral source, with another species playing a role in human transmission.

    In a new research paper, published in the journal Nature, researchers say their genetic data suggests “handling these animals requires considerable caution, and that their sale in wet markets should be strictly prohibited.”

    Further surveillance on pangolins in the wild in China and Southeast Asia is needed to understand their role in the emergence of coronaviruses and the risk of future transmission to humans, they add.

    The ant-devouring scaly mammal, said to be the most widely trafficked mammal in the world, is threatened with extinction. The animal’s scales are in high demand in Asia for use in traditional Chinese medicine, while pangolin meat is considered a delicacy by some.

    Is a knife, simpliciter, always and by definition, a deadly weapon? Couldn’t it be used to peel potatoes, yams and slice other vegetables in one’s kitchen?

    Does residence, of and by itself affect/deny all loyalty and spirit of patriotism?

    I remember a Barbadian colleague who reportedly cried at her naturalization ceremony. Others thought she cried, along with others similarly situated, because of her adopted nationality. … On the other hand, she indicated that she became emotional at the thought of someone asking her to surrender her Barbadian nationality.

    To use a phrase borrowed from UK Immigration, because you may “have succumbed to the charms of U.K residence”, does that legally or morally deprive you (Hal) of your sense of patriotism, nationalism, and above all your democratic right and duty to speak out on any issues of national import pertaining to Barbados, as you see fit?

    Non-sequitur: As a Barbadian …. Do we need to (re)read the Barbados Constitution? Or, just fuhget it!

    Barbados is beginning to receive news about this island from agencies outside of this country.
    There is a loud silence from a usually loquacious and camera friendly administration.
    On behalf of the people of Barbados, we expect the promised transparency and fulsome communication; especially at this time.
    In the absence of the promised daily updates, the Democratic Labour Party raises the following questions:
    1. Was there a second and third group of CARICOM nationals stranded in Barbados?
    2. Are our ports now closed as per a Press report from a respected Guyana newspaper.
    3. What is the update on COVID -19 positive and suspected cases? Our last Government live update was four days ago, and finally
    4. Is our Prime Minister ok?
