Jesus’ Assignment

Jesus had an important assignment from His Father.  That was to train a set of people to train others.  Jesus described this assignment when He was speaking with His Father.  We are privileged to read the intimate conversation in John 17.  It starts with Jesus’ request to return to His former place.

Jesus spoke these words, lifted up His eyes to heaven, and said: “Father, the hour has come. Glorify Your Son, that Your Son also may glorify You, as You have given Him authority over all flesh, that He should give eternal life to as many as You have given Him.” (v.1-2)

Jesus then explained how eternal life was to be obtained.

 “And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.” (V.3)

Jesus then reported that He had finished His assignment.

“I have glorified You on the earth. I have finished the work which You have given Me to do. And now, O Father, glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory which I had with You before the world was.”  (v.4-5)

Note that this assignment was finished BEFORE He was crucified for all of humanity.  What was this work that God gave Him to do?  We do not need to speculate.  Jesus explained it Himself.

“I have manifested Your name to the men whom You have given Me out of the world. They were Yours, You gave them to Me, and they have kept Your word.  Now they have known that all things which You have given Me are from You. For I have given to them the words which You have given Me; and they have received them, and have known surely that I came forth from You; and they have believed that You sent Me.”  (V.6-8)

To ensure that this assignment would be sustained, Jesus would later instruct his followers exactly what they should do.  They were to train others (make disciples).  He also instructed them on the training manual, namely Jesus’ own commandments – which He had received from His Father.  Hear Jesus.

And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,  teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.  (Matthew 28:18-20)

If we want to follow Jesus, then we should submit to the discipline of Jesus’ training, while we cultivate a relationship with “the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent”.

Be encouraged on your training journey, and please do not be distracted by those who choose not to grow.

    Grenville when are u going to put on your whole armour and get out into the trenches the way jesus did and walk and talk among the crowd and listen and hear they concern
    U might be able to reach a couple thousand even if u do not have the power to feed five thousand
    Your lazy man approach through a process of smart technology would get u no where

    BEFORE THE SAVIOR SUFFERED IN GETHSEMANE, HE OFFERED HIS GREAT INTERCESSORY PRAYER. HE PRAYED THAT HIS DISCIPLES AND ALL WHO FOLLOW HIM WOULD COME TO KNOW HEAVENLY FATHER AND OBTAIN ETERNAL LIFE, AND HE PRAYED THAT THEY MIGHT BE ONE WITH HIM AND HIS FATHER.

    The Savior taught about the importance of coming to know Heavenly Father and Him. At some point between the time when the Savior and His disciples had eaten the Last Supper and when they entered the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus offered a prayer that is traditionally known as the Intercessory Prayer. One meaning of the word intercede is to speak to someone in behalf of another person. In this case, JESUS CHRIST SPOKE TO HEAVENLY FATHER IN BEHALF OF HIS DISCIPLES, PLEADING THAT THEY MIGHT RECEIVE ETERNAL LIFE.

    John 17:3 How did the Savior describe eternal life? “And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.” (V.3)

    Based on verse 3 TO RECEIVE ETERNAL LIFE, WE MUST COME TO KNOW HEAVENLY FATHER AND HIS SON, JESUS CHRIST.

    It is one thing to know about God and another to know him. We know about him when we learn that he is a personal being in whose image man is created; when we learn that the Son is in the express image of his Father’s person; when we learn that both the Father and the Son possess certain specified attributes and powers. But we know them, in the sense of gaining eternal life, when we enjoy and experience the same things they do. Those who know God become like him, and experience the kind of life, which is eternal life. Remember he said Mathew 5:48, “Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.” He gives no commandment unless he provides a way whereby we may accomplish what He ask of us!

    To know the Father and the Son we must have a correct understanding of Them. Many people believe that God and the Godhead are incomprehensible, but this is a false doctrine.

    The greatest truth known to man is that there is a God in heaven who is infinite and eternal; that he is the creator, upholder, and preserver of all things; that he created us and the heavens and ordained and established a plan of salvation whereby we might advance and progress and become like him. We believe and obey his laws that we may become Joint Heirs with him and Enjoy Life Eternal an Inheritance that he has Promised. Now that is the greatest truth and the most glorious concept known to the human mind”

    John 17:6–8 What had the disciples done to come to know the Savior?

    We are in the political trenches weekly. This forum is only one small aspect of our political outreach. However, the Monday Sermon’s are different. They are written to present what Jesus said, and have nothing to do with politics.

    I am partly to blame for that misunderstanding since at the bottom, I am identified with Solutions Barbados. I will ensure that future Monday Sermons do not identify me that way. Apologies to the BU community for that oversight. If David can correct it on this one, it would be appreciated.

    This is a space, away from politics, where people can be encouraged in their growth if they want to. Otherwise, they can simply scroll on by.

    Why did Jesus come to earth? It is a most crucial question, for a wrong answer here could lead us to some awful problems

    • If he came to teach morals – then we will think his life was about ethics.
    • If he came to fix the environment – then his life was about trees and plants.
    • If he came to model manners and nice living – then we will place our bibles beside the December issue of Martha Stewart Living!

    A wrong understanding of why Jesus came will take us in all sorts of wrong directions! It is crucial we know why God came to earth. So, let us listen to His own words (as an adult) explaining why it was He came.

    Jesus and Zacchaeus – Luke 19
    19:1He entered Jericho and was passing through. 2 And there was a man named Zacchaeus. He was a chief tax collector and was rich. 3 And he was seeking to see who Jesus was, but on account of the crowd he could not, because he was small of stature. 4 So he ran on ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see him, for he was about to pass that way. 5 And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, hurry and come down, for I must stay at your house today.” 6 So he hurried and came down and received him joyfully. 7 And when they saw it, they all grumbled, “He has gone in to be the guest of a man who is a sinner.” 8 And Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, “Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor. And if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I restore it fourfold.” 9 And Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, since he also is a son of Abraham. 10 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”

    Now, here is a most remarkable story! Zacchaeus, as far as we know, had never heard, seen or spoken to this man Jesus before this day – yet, in the space of a few minutes, his entire life was turned upside down! From a lying, deceptive cheat, Zacchaeus was transformed into a new creature – full of love and mercy and kindness that proved itself by his giving away the wealth that he had always lived for. Zacchaeus had been saved! He had been brought from darkness to light – death to life! He had become a Christian – and Jesus sums up this event with these powerful words: “For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”

    Here, in a nutshell, is the one great purpose of Jesus coming to earth. And it is echoed throughout the New Testament in different ways and with different words – but all with the same meaning and thought. Why did Jesus come? Jesus came to save sinners!

    Jesus’ meeting with Zacchaeus was not the only time he told men why he came to earth and two other occasions deserve a closer look. Once, when addressing some sins in the lives of His own followers, Jesus told his disciples that they should model their life’s purpose after His.

    Matthew 20
    25 But Jesus called them to him and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. 26 It shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, 27 and whoever would be first among you must be your slave, 28 even as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

    Another time, while calling men to repent of their sins and believe on Him for eternal life, Jesus again made clear why it was He came to earth.

    John 12
    44 And Jesus cried out and said, “Whoever believes in me, believes not in me but in him who sent me. 45 And whoever sees me sees him who sent me. 46 I have come into the world as light, so that whoever believes in me may not remain in darkness. 47 If anyone hears my words and does not keep them, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world but to save the world. 48 The one who rejects me and does not receive my words has a judge; the word that I have spoken will judge him on the last day. 49 For I have not spoken on my own authority, but the Father who sent me has himself given me a commandment–what to say and what to speak. 50 And I know that his commandment is eternal life. What I say, therefore, I say as the Father has told me.”

    Similarly, those who wrote of Christ after His death and resurrection understood this mission and they echoed it in their letters.

    Listen to Paul in Galatians 4…
    3 In the same way we also, when we were children, were enslaved to the elementary principles [2] of the world. 4 But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, 5 to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons. 6 And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!” 7 So you are no longer a slave, but a son, and if a son, then an heir through God.

    Or the Apostle John in 1 John 5
    20 And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true; and we are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life. 21 Little children, keep yourselves from idols.

    Or, Paul again as he writes to Timothy (1 Timothy 1)
    15 The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost. 16 But I received mercy for this reason, that in me, as the foremost, Jesus Christ might display his perfect patience as an example to those who were to believe in him for eternal life. 17 To the King of ages, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honour and glory forever and ever. Amen

    1 Timothy 2
    3 This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Saviour, 4 who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. 5 For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, 6 who gave himself as a ransom for all, which is the testimony given at the proper time.

    So here is the one great purpose of Jesus Christ – the reason for the season – to seek and to save the Lost!

    nb Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners

    If you are so evangelically hell-bent on following in the footsteps of Jesus Christ why not go further than just preaching from the BU bullying pulpit to the already Christianity-converted and carry the word of the Lord God Jesus directly to those in most need?

    Why not take your bible and bullhorn to places like Kensington New Road on a Friday or Saturday evening; just after sunset or on days of celebration like Ramadan and Eid al fitr and blow your trumpet of salvation along the single path to paradise only through your Jew man Jesus.

    By this simple and practical act in keeping with your ISO 9001 standard of following Jesus we are sure you would earn more reward points to enter the kingdom of God through the eye of a needle than those given to Job or even the opportunistic thief on the cross.

    Yes GP No.2, here is a challenge to you to prove Piece de legend wrong in his perspicuous assessment of the sleeping dictator of the one-man party called “SB”.

    Let’s see you start this movement of Pauline conversion by going right into the house of the infidels to spread the only Word of the only God and the rest of the BU pack would follow including the same Piece and his growing sidekick Dr. GP.

    Rather than tell you why I think Jesus came, I’m just going to let Jesus speak for Himself. Moreover, these words are right off the lips of Jesus.

    Contrary to popular belief, Jesus didn’t come to restore social justice or world peace. He didn’t come merely to heal the sick or clothe the naked. He didn’t even come simply to give us a good example for how to live morally upright lives.

    He came for a different purpose.

    So, why did Jesus come? I want to give you three reasons why Jesus was born in Bethlehem around 2000 years ago.

    Jesus Came to Give His Life as a Ransom for Many

    For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many. (Mark 10:45)

    This passage cuts to the heart of why Jesus had to come. He came to give His very life to save ours. He was born into the world so that He could die for the world. Paul says it this way, “But when the fullness of time had come [that’s Christmas], God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons” (Gal. 4:4-5).

    Jesus redeems us. He pays our debt. But how does Jesus redeem us? He pays with His life. Our text says that Jesus came—that’s Christmas—to give His life as a ransom—that’s Easter. The payment demanded was His sinless life. And that ransom price was impossible for you and me to pay.

    Jesus Came to Call Sinners to Repentance

    Jesus answered them, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.” (Luke 5:31-32)

    For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.”

    esus came to give eternal life to whoever believes in Jesus. Eternal life doesn’t come automatically. You don’t get eternal life like you get hair. It only comes once you put your trust in Jesus. You have to believe in Him.

    It’s natural to ask, what happens if I choose not to believe in him? Jesus doesn’t leave us hanging, He says, “Whoever believes in Him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God” (John 3:18).

    What does Jesus mean by condemned already? The bad news is that we are all sinners and the wages of sin is death. God is an absolutely holy and just Being. He cannot allow sins to go unpunished. In fact, it would be unjust for God to allow sinners off scot-free.

    There are two options: Either you can pay for your sins yourself or you can trust in Jesus’ death for the payment of your sins. Reject God’s offer of salvation and you will endure eternal punishment. Accept God’s offer, and you will have eternal life (Matt. 25:46). It’s your choice. But, please know, there is no third option.

    So why did Jesus come? Jesus tells us. He came to give His life as a ransom for sinners. He came to call those sinners to repentance. And Jesus came to give eternal life to anyone who would believe in Him.

    This Christmas season, meditate on these precious theological truths AND REALIZE THAT THIS WAS JESUS’ ASSIGNMENT .

    Yes. Jesus came to save sinners. However, that was not his only purpose, as is evident from Jesus’ interaction with His Father.

    If He was to only save sinners, then he could have been sacrificed at 12 years, or 20. But he had not yet “finished the work” which God gave Him to do. He had not yet trained disciples to make disciples.

    Both of these things are critically important, and neither should be discounted.

    RE If we want to follow Jesus, then we should submit to the discipline of Jesus’ training, while we cultivate a relationship with “the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent”.

    If we want to follow Jesus, then we should do as those who were taught directly by Jesus taught the very earliest members of the church to do as recorded in Acts 2 41-42Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.

    Re Be encouraged on your training journey, and please do not be distracted by those who choose not to grow.
    It seems that the early church were well trained according to Acts 2 when you read the commendation that Paul gave a group of at least 31 believers in Romans 16.

    Re Jesus had an important assignment from His Father. That was to train a set of people to train others. Jesus described this assignment when He was speaking with His Father. We are privileged to read the intimate conversation in John 17. It starts with Jesus’ request to return to His former place.

    Yesterday we outlined John 17 and demonstrated that Jesus DID NOT describe ANY assignment THEREIN.

    MOREOVER WE TOOK PAINS TO ITEMIZE THE SEVERAL PASSAGES IN SCRIPTURE THAT CLEARLY EXPLAINS WHAT JESUS’ PURPOSE AND ASSIGNMENTS ON EARTH WERE

    I already quoted the scriptures in the original article, together with the scripture references, in the event that you think that I may have misquoted them.

    For your convenience.

    Jesus told His Father that He has finished the work God gave Him to do, before He was crucified.
    He described this work as training His disciples in John 17:6-8.

    After Jesus was crucified and resurrected, He instructed His disciples to make other disciples. He also instructed them to teach others what He had commanded them in Matthew 28:18-20.

    In none of Jesus’ commandments in Matthew 5-7 does He expect us to grow by hearing only. Jesus taught that thoes who heard and did were wise and stable. He also taught that those who only heard were foolish and unstable. Hear Jesus.

    “But everyone who hears these sayings of Mine, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it fell. And great was its fall.” (Matthew 7:26-27)

    Jesus told His disciples: “If you love Me, keep My commandments.” (John 14:15). He also said: “He who does not love Me does not keep My words”. (John 14:24a).

    The choice is ours. We can focus on learning and obeying Jesus’ commandments, or we can focus on only studying Jesus’ commandments. I have simply chosen the former.

    If you were a true believer you would have been 100 % ISO 9001 compliant with the commandments of Jesus by taking some of the load off the shoulders of Kemar Saffrey and invite some of those homeless in the City to your palatial mansion in the suburbs; even if only for the current season of goodwill towards all men and women.

    That is what Jesus expects you to do.Your assignment!

    Why not read Luke 16:19-31 and see what the same Jesus has to say to people of your material standing?

    The following may be relevant to your intervention. Jesus spoke to a person who wanted to “do” something to have eternal life. Hear him.

    “Now behold, one came and said to Him, “Good Teacher, what good thing shall I do that I may have eternal life?” (Matthew 19:16)

    Jesus told him to keep the commandments. But he was not satisfied with that answer. Hear him.

    “The young man said to Him, “All these things I have kept from my youth. What do I still lack?”

    “Jesus said to him, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell what you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.” (Matthew 19:20-21)

    Eternal life is a gift that cannot be earned. We do not obey Jesus’ commandments to earn a place in heaven. That is a free gift that we simply receive – if we want to. Unfortunately, we can be deceived into rejecting that wonderful gift.

    After that, we can either follow Jesus and be trained for responsibilities, or not. If we choose not to follow Jesus’ instructions for growth, then you may be in heaven, but perhaps not doing much. Hear Jesus.

    “Whoever therefore breaks one of the least of these commandments, and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 5:19a)

    Does that expression of Matthew-inspired modesty also apply to your ‘well-bent’ (strictly speaking from a structural engineering angle, of course) lines of Public Relations exercises through your Walbrent College mouthpiece?

    But we must go along with you that, by keeping your acts of charity behind closed doors, you are strictly following a well recommended commandment of Jesus.

    “Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven.”

    What we want to see from you are not only words of assurance but your light shining before men; not to see you actual works of charity but evidence you are prepared to demonstrate a genuine Christian commitment to your fellow men (and women) who have found themselves in conditions like the eponymous Lazarus or the allegorical victim of a violent robbery who received assistance from the Good Samaritan.

    Let us see you shine your light, not from the ‘big-able’ mansion on the hill which ‘moths and vermin will soon destroy’ but in your mixing and mingling, in true Christ-like brotherhood, with those at the coalface of suffering and in genuine need of your Samaritan-like assistance.

    Why not join Kemar Saffrey in his Herculean task or even form your own ‘private’ charity to rival and even out-perform Saffrey’s in mitigating the fast increasing socio-economic ravages arising from the IMF-inspired austerity measures?
