Today, it is useful to understand the basic preparatory training for those who want to follow Jesus.

Jesus gave a set of commandments.  Some Christians found them challenging to follow, so they developed diverse and conflicting traditions about these commandments, including:

  • they should be followed;
  • they are optional;
  • they are a guide;
  • they are impossible to follow; and
  • their purpose is to show us how sinful we are, and our need for a savior.

However, rather than speculate about whether we should follow them or not, we should go to the first rule on interpreting the Bible – what does Jesus say about it?  If Jesus is silent on the matter, then we can go to other rules.

Jesus introduced His commandments by stating:

Whoever breaks the least of these commandments and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. (Matthew 5:19)

Jesus ended His commandments by stating:

Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I [Jesus] will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock.

But everyone who hears these sayings of Mine, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it fell. And great was its fall.” (Matthew 7:24-27)

It would seem that Jesus intended that that all of His followers should obey all of His commandments, which are included in what is popularly called, ‘the sermon on the mount’. A descriptive outline of this sermon follows. The details are provided in the Gospel according to Matthew, chapters 5 to 7.

  1. Expect to face challenging situations, so count the cost before making a commitment to follow Jesus. (Matthew 5:3-12)
  2. Be visible and effective in your obedience to God. (Matthew 5:13-16)
  3. Do the right thing, especially when there is no expectation of a reward. (Matthew 5:17-20)
  4. Maintain good relationships with others, and reconcile quickly with your adversaries. (Matthew 5:21-26)
  5. Do not sin in thoughts, words, or deeds. (Matthew 5:27-30)
  6. Be faithful to your spouse. (Matthew 5:31-32)
  7. Tell the truth always, regardless of the consequences. (Matthew 5:33-37)
  8. Submit to everyone and trust God. (Matthew 5:38-42)
  9. Love your enemies. (Matthew 5:43-48)
  10. Do charitable deeds in secret. (Matthew 6:1-4)
  11. Cultivate a relationship with God, your heavenly Father, and genuinely forgive everyone who hurts you. (Matthew 6:5-15)
  12. When fasting, do not make it obvious to others. (Matthew 6:16-18)
  13. Let your principal security be in heaven. (Matthew 6:19-21)
  14. Do not be distracted with things that can cause you to lose your way. (Matthew 6:22-23)
  15. Trust God for your security, rather than trusting in your wealth, or your ability to generate wealth. (Matthew 6:24)
  16. Do not worry about anything, but first seek God’s kingdom and righteousness. (Matthew 6:25-34)
  17. Do not attempt to correct others while you are struggling with the same challenges. (Matthew 7:1-5)
  18. Wisely share information with those who lack understanding. (Matthew 7:6)
  19. Treat others the way that you want to be treated. (Matthew 7:7-12)
  20. Stay on the responsible path, even when you have little company. (Matthew 7:13-14)
  21. Beware of counterfeit leaders – you will recognize them by their irresponsible behaviour, which they cannot stop doing. (Matthew 7:15-20)
  22. It is not only acknowledging Jesus as Lord that will allow you to enter the Kingdom, but by practicing these commandments. (Matthew 7:21-23)
  23. If you obey these sayings, then you will be stable, otherwise, you will be unstable during challenging times. (Matthew 7:24-27)

Jesus commanded His followers to obey both the letter and spirit of the law. Jesus did this by contrasting His commandments with those given by Moses and Jewish tradition, for example.

“You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder, and whoever murders will be in danger of the judgment.’ But I say to you that whoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment. (Matthew 5:21b, 22)

Jesus’ commandments not only instruct believers to avoid doing what is wrong, but to proactively do what is right, motivated by love.

Many of these commandments appear to be contrary to our natural tendencies.  However, we normally improve at doing whatever we practice. Therefore, with persistent practice, this behaviour can become habitual.  Enjoy your improvement journey.

    RE: GP We graduated from Sunday School a long time ago. When are we going to have a mature conversation on our BELIEFS?
    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
    I respect the fact that you are willing to discuss spiritual issues and I assume that willingness is genuine. Therefore, although it is not my fault, I apologize for the unseemly responses given to date by GP. I will try my best to put forward what I understand from the Scriptures:

    +++Spiritual Gifts+++

    We first hear the expression, “spiritual gifts”, used by Paul in 1 Corinthians:

    Now about spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be uninformed. 1 Corinthians 12:1, Berean Study Bible

    The New Living Translation version of this verse is very instructive:
    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
    Now, dear brothers and sisters, regarding your question about the special abilities the Spirit gives us. I don’t want you to misunderstand this. 1 Corinthians 12:1, NLT
    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
    The term “spiritual gifts” therefore, refers to special abilities given by the Holy Spirit, the third person in what theologians call the Godhead or Trinity.

    Note that even though the phrase was first used in 1 Corinthians 12:1, the gifts first manifested themselves in the apostles in Acts on the Day of Pentecost. The gift displayed then was speaking in other tongues, the more fancy title for which is glossolalia. Here is the Bible account:
    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
    …They saw tongues like flames of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. Acts 2:4 -5
    It is important to note that this outpouring on the Apostles was promised by Jesus back in Acts 1:8 before he ascended:
    But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” After He had said this, they watched as He was taken up, and a cloud hid Him from their sight.… Acts 1:8-9
    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
    Even further back in John 14:16 Yeshua [Jesus] had said:
    Then I will ask the Father to send you the Holy Spirit who will help you and always be with you. Contemporary English Version
    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
    From the above at least THREE things should be clear:

    ONE: The spiritual gifts are not innate in man; we were not born with them.

    TWO: Spiritual gifts are only available to those who are followers of Jesus. This point is worth emphasizing because Yeshua [Jesus] made it himself part of the passage I quoted earlier:
    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
    And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Advocate to be with you forever the Spirit of truth. THE WORLD CANNOT RECEIVE HIM [emphasis mine] because it neither sees Him nor knows Him. But you do know Him, for He abides with you and will be in you.
    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

    THREE: The Holy Spirit plays major roles in the lives of the believer. Some of them are: (a) empowering Christians to do the work assigned to them here on earth (2) providing comfort to them (3) counselling them and (4) teaching them. All of these can be backed up by Scripture.

    This is already a lengthy response, so I am leaving this here for the time being so that we can think about / talk about it.

    I know there are dozens of questions that people ask about this matter and there is a lot of religious hype about it. But this is not so new and many of the questions were answered in the Bible because of the confusion even early Christians had about them.

    I hope this was helpful.

  24. Ironside:

    You are too quick to judge, and with me, you are ALWAYS wrong with your accusations.

    Following Jesus’ commandments is not how you inherit eternal life (or are saved). That cannot be earned, but is a gracious gift based on the atoning sacrifice of Jesus, our Messiah. We need only accept it. Is that “another gospel” Ironside?

    Once we have been adopted in God’s family, what should we do. Jesus stated that we should follow Him, and gave His followers commandments. What are we supposed to do with these commandments? Why not let Jesus answer that.

    “Whoever breaks the least of these commandments and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 5:19)

    Note that both of them will be in the Kingdom, and both the immature and the mature will have chosen their state. Jesus noted that the wise will do his commandments – but the foolish will not.

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
    If you adopted the practice of judging YOURSELF before you commit “pen to paper” or open your mouth, there would be no need to make such a statement!

    The truth is that you need to do something about your presentation/writing skills. There is such a thing as putting your thesis or point in a context so that people find it difficult to misconstrue where you are coming from.

    You failed to do this and therefore left yourself open to the charge I made. In case you have not noticed, people are good at “reading the lines, between the lines and beyond the lines” (quote compliments a former educator and journalist, Gladstone Holder)

    What you are saying now (see below) needs to be “foregrounded”:
    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
    Re: nextparty246 November 23, 2019 9:28 PM: Following Jesus’ commandments is not how you inherit eternal life (or are saved). That cannot be earned, but is a gracious gift based on the atoning sacrifice of Jesus, our Messiah. We need only accept it. Is that “another gospel” Ironside?
    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
    So why are you telling me and did not tell the whole BU community? Are you afraid to proclaim the full gospel so that you are not labelled a fundamentalist?

    This country is falling to pieces and you think your watered down, and frankly misleading version of the gospel, is going to help solve the problem? What is your real goal or purpose in writing? Are you in a popularity contest? If so, you are definitely not winning it!

    More follows…..

  26. @ nextparty246 November 23, 2019 9:28 PM

    “Whoever breaks the least of these commandments and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 5:19)
    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

    If I “read between the lines”, it seems that your understanding of the gospel stops at the pre-crucifixion, Old Covenant period. In the gospels, Jesus had to speak about the commandments because at that point the listeners were still under the Old Covenant (the Law). Furthermore he had to show that he was the fulfillment of the Law, which he was at pains (pun intended) to point out.

    Hello! None of us can obey the commandments by our own efforts! Even if we could, it is NOT enough! So your stressing obedience of the commandments as a PREPARATION or PRECURSOR is misleading. Here is the Scripture loud and clear:
    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
    For no one can ever be made right with God by doing what the law commands. The law simply shows us how sinful we are. Romans 3:20, New Living Translation.
    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
    Now I know that our prideful human nature does NOT want to accept that but the Scripture is very clear!

    Have explained any of this? Absolutely not!

    Under the New (post-crucifixion)Covenant, the one that starts with acceptance of the sacrifice of Christ, God promises to write His laws on our hearts so that there is inherent motivation to obey the commandments AND GO BEYOND. Here is Jehovah being quoted in Hebrews:
    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
    This is the covenant I will establish with the people of Israel after that time, declares the Lord. I will put my laws in their minds and write them on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. Hebrews 8:10, New International Version.
    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
    Have explained any of this? Absolutely not!

    Sir, I will not let you water down the gospel or preach a “humanistic gospel”. It does not matter whether people want to ACCEPT the truth or not. Fundamentalist or not, it is Jehovah’s truth!

    When people can’t deal with the truth they start using irrelevant, and often idiotic labels, rather than sound reasoning. The labels shut down the argument and settle the problem; or so they think! Apparently, some also think that you cannot apply your intellect in a rigorous manner to spiritual things; only to politics or economics etc.

    Well, you can’t want someone with a greater intellect than Yeshua! People don’t read and/or do not take time to understand the Scriptures, so they do not appreciate (or cannot discern) how Yeshua handled matters of religion, economics, politics, justice, etc.

    So then, our job is to PRESENT the unvarnished truth and leave people to make a choice.

    Then their blood will be on their own heads!

  27. Wrong again Ironside – and very misleading.

    Jesus was very clear that He expects His followers to obey His commandments.

    Unfortunately, some decide that Jesus’ commandments are not to be followed. They retard their own growth with this decision. The also irresponsibly damage the growth of others by discouraging them from growing.

    When we do not grow according to Jesus’ commandments, we remain infantile. We can only study the ABCs, but you can only do that for so long. So we keep studying and complicating the simplicity of Jesus’ messages.

    Stubbornly deciding not to believe Jesus’ clear instructions on His commandments results in that person deceiving themselves into delaying their progress. Hear Paul.

    “Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.” (2 Tim 3:7)

    Jesus was very clear that He expects His followers to obey His commandments.
    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

    Are you one of “His” genuinely upright followers, GP No.2?

    If so why don’t you follow to the ISO 9001 standard of adherence His ‘following’ commandment?

    “All these I have kept,” said the young man. “What do I still lack?”

    Jesus told him, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven.
    Then come, follow Me.”
    When the young man heard this, he went away in sorrow, because he had great wealth.

    When are you rich (but getting old) man going to follow this commandment before it’s too late to enter the kingdom of heaven without a priest praying for your dead soul?

    Why not ‘sell’ your mansion in suburbia Barbados and move to the New Orleans (where the poor and dispossessed reside) in order to spread the glad tidings of following Jesus?

    While living like Saint Francis of Assisi you could make yourself useful to the very poor by using your structural engineering skills in improving the quality of housing in that area.

    Which Lodge is that?

    Are you referring to the lodge for Masons like many in the Bajan fraternity of politics and the judiciary?

    Or are you thinking of Rosicrucianism the Order of the Rosy Cross in the shape of the virgin Mary womb aka the centre of our galaxy for Ascended Masters like Jesus?

    Or are you knowingly thinking of the Biblical Order of Melchizedek of which Abraham was a subject and the eponymous Jesus a lifelong member?

    Or are you inadvertently alluding to the ‘Holy’ Catholic Church which is about to implode from the sexual sins of its male hierarchy?

  37. @Miller

    Take your pick!

  38. Hal: You simply cannot stop yourself from making stupid accusations, regardless of the topic discussed. Carry on then.

  39. Miller:

    The context of the passage you quoted follows.

    “Now behold, one came and said to Him [Jesus], “Good Teacher, what good thing shall I do that I may have eternal life?” ” (Matthew 19:16)

    To inherit eternal life, we must be perfect – which is not possible for us to achieve by ourselves. Jesus showed the fellow just how impossible it was to be perfect.

    This article is not about perfection. Rather, it is about being trained using the method specified by Jesus.

  40. LOL

    Jesus told him, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven.
    Then come, follow Me.”

    MAN YOU REALLY TWISTED UP
    EVEN MILLER GOT YOU TANGLED UP

    RE To inherit eternal life, we must be perfect PLEASE KINDLY CITE ALL THE SCRIPTURES THAT TEACH THIS
    START IN JOHN 1 THEN GO TO JOHN 3 AND CONTINUE AND LEARN HOW ETERNAL LIFE IS INHERITED

    MAN YOU WORST THAN SLEEPY JOE BIDEN

  41. Grenville,

    But you hard ears doah!

    What is the purpose of this nonsense submission????!!!!

    This is not going to win you any election neither is it going to convert anybody. So you have failed as a politician AND as a preacher.

    You spend too much time responding to those who criticize you rather than allowing your solutions to speak for themselves.

    Your solutions have been lacking in depth and your preaching likewise.

    And this is why GP the original will continue to sing his song regardless of your thinly veiled attempt to smack him.

  42. Sorry. Wrong blog. Meant for Nonsense: Part 2.

  43. I have accused you of being a Little Hitler, an intolerant Napoleon. Am I wrong?

  44. Hal:

    You have come into this space/class trying to be the class clown. Are you being paid to behave so badly, or are you doing this all by yourself.

    If the latter, then you should be ashamed to behave like a little bully on the playground at this time on your life. Tragically, everyone can see your decline. It is time you acted your age.

  45. ONE MAN CALLING ANOTHER A CLOWN YET HE IS A WHOLE CIRCUS WHO IS UNABLE TO SHOW US THAT HIS SOLUTIONS BARBADOS HAS NO SOLUTIONS FOR BARBADOS

    HERE HE IS UPBRAIDING AN ELDERLY MAN FOR HIS DECLINE

    IF HE IS UNDERGOING THE DECLINE OF THE BODY OF HIS HUMILIATION (VILE BODY IN THE KJV) WHAT AGE WILL HE ACT OUT?

    FILLUPS NEED SOME TRAINING IN GERONTOLOGY

    IT MIGHT JUST HELP HIM TO UNDERSTAND AND APPRECIATE THE SENIORS IN THE ELECTORATE

    IS FILLUPS HARASSING HAL BECAUSE HE IS FRUSTRATED BECAUSE HE IS UNABLE TO SHOW US THAT HIS SOLUTIONS BARBADOS HAS NO SOLUTIONS FOR BARBADOS

  46. IS GRENVILLE LASHING OUT BECAUSE HE GETTING LASHES?
    IS GRENVILLE LASHING OUT BECAUSE HE IS FAILING TO GAIN TRACTION DESPITE ALL THAT HE IS DOING?
