Back in the 1960s, some scientists believed that by 1975, the human race would perish through famine caused by climate change. Funny thing, the human race is now 7.5 billion strong. Fast-forward 10 years to the 1970s, and scientists were claiming that the world was entering a new ice age, or, in other words, that we were imperiled by global freezing.
Now it is 2019 (about the same time scientists had predicted the world would be frozen over), and many of my peers, as well as plenty of adults, believe that the world is going to end due to global warming, and there is nothing we can do to stop it.
The hysteria over climate change has gone so far that many students my age are striking — skipping school every Friday to protest global warming. And they’re demanding that Washington, D.C., fix it.
Washington has many, many things that it needs to fix, and many responsibilities and duties to uphold. Global warming, however, is not one of them. Studies show that if the U.S. fully implemented the Green New Deal, the temperature of Earth would decrease by no more than 0.097 degrees Fahrenheit over a span of 30 years.
BUT THE PRICE OF ELECTRICITY WOULD INCREASE BY ALMOST 10 TIMES ITS CURRENT AMOUNT. THE PRICE OF GASOLINE WOULD INCREASE ASTRONOMICALLY, SO THAT DRIVERS WOULD HAVE NO CHOICE BUT TO DRIVE PRIUSES AND TESLAS.

Further, it is estimated that in the state of Texas alone, such regulations would cause the loss of over a million jobs. And that’s just in Texas; across the United States, the numbers would be devastating and the effects on our economy and society possibly irreversible.
None of this sounds like freedom to me, and that is because it is not freedom; it is government control. It is government control over the single black mother who now won’t be able to afford her electricity. It is government control over the Hispanic immigrant who, because the construction machines he operates are not “eco-friendly,” will lose his job and not be able to put food on the table for his family. This is not the American way. It doesn’t make sense to implement regulations that do not solve the problem and yet adversely affect the American people so greatly.
The government wants control. And its excuse is the thin veil of only wanting the best for people and the Earth. But the result of ceding so much control to government that we will have no choice in what job we have, no choice in what car we drive, and no choice in the price we pay for our electricity.
That’s not freedom. And frankly, the possibility of such government overreach scares me a lot more than global warming, which seems to be just another ridiculous scientific prediction. Yes, we need to be good stewards of the Earth. We need to take care of our natural resources, because they are the only ones we have. But the government cannot do it for us, and if it tries, it will only wreak havoc.
The good news is we are taking care of our environment; America’s air and water are cleaner than ever, even as our economy has expanded and our population has increased. My peers should take note, so that in 20 year or 30 years or 50 years, we’ll still enjoy the freedoms that set America apart.”

I watched part of the documentary out of curiosity. Basically, Savory seems to have restricted his comments to parts of Africa(particularly, those areas where desertification is the norm, like the Sahel regions and other regions which suffer from marginal precipitation). He posits the idea that desertification can be reversed by increasing the stocking rate of land( having more animals on a given acreage). No where is it mentioned that ,the acceleration of desertification has been engendered by the search for fire-wood for cooking purposes. This is a known fact especially in the Sahel region. He has a point when he alludes to the fact that vegetative cover cushions the impact of rain on the surface of soils, thereby hindering excessive surface run off; allowing precipitation to percolate and replenish soil-water content.
The idea of moving animals from one area to another is nothing new. This process is called in animal science a flying herd and is practiced in the more developed countries. As a student doing agriculture in 1970,I was made aware of this practice. The manure and urine from the flying herd increases the organic matter of the soil, increasing the water-holding and cation-ion exchange capacity of the soils as Savory showed ,when he presented soils that experienced grazing versus those that did not experienced grazing..
Savory also alluded to the practice of slash and burn as practiced by pastoralists. He appears to oppose the practice. However, the pastoralist seem to know what they are doing. Certain trees produce seeds that exhibit a dormancy period that is only broken by fire. In addition. the ash from such fires ameliorates the soils’ fertility status by the addition of phosphates, nitrates and potash. After cultivation, the slash and burn plots are abandoned for a number of years allowing fallow conditions to occur and a concomitant increase in soil fertility.
Finally, there is a practice called zero-tillage which has been known since the 1960’s. Soils are not plowed. After harvest, the crop stubble is left in the field. and seeds are planted directly into the soil. This precludes the need for plowing, thereby keeping the soil profile intact.. Zero-tillage is common in the USA.

What it is all about is as follows: You have let say one-hundred acres divided in twenty-acre lots. All animals are allowed to graze on one twenty-acre lot. When the grazing is exhausted, the animals are transferred to a new twenty-acre lot and so on. There is nothing new about what is being advocated. Savory uses the African situation to illustrate what he wants to. I am not familiar with the situation at Greggs’ farm ,but I am not surprise to hear it is being practiced in Barbados..
If a given acreage is overstocked with grazing animals,, contrary to what Savory is advocating, soil erosion will eventually occur. .

The White family didn’t want anything to do with Monsanto, their GMOs, or their corporate empire. They just wanted to continue doing what they’ve always done, and done well…they produced their crops naturally, without GMOs. They relied on the cycle that nature set in place—the cycle that’s stood the test of time: Plant the seeds, harvest the fields, sell the crops, save seed for next year. That’s how it’s always been done.
Taking an 80-Year-Old Man to Federal Court
In fact, the White family had been an integral part of farming in their Alabama community. His great-grandfather owned a grist mill, and the Whites had helped other farmers in the area by cleaning seeds. This process, in which seeds are separated from chaff and other impurities and prepared to be saved for planting the next year’s crops, is an important one to farmers—it’s also been a legal right, called “farmer’s privilege” and protected under the Plant Variety Protection Act of 1970.
But since Monsanto entered the scene with their patented GMO seeds, everything has changed. The process of seed cleaning is now fraught with danger, as Monsanto has made it a point to persecute farmers cleaning seed—even small farmers who have been doing so (entirely legally) for years.
In 2005, Monsanto accused Michael White and his father, Wayne White, of saving patented GMO soybean seed—Wayne had never grown soy in his life, and was over 80 years old when he went to court to defend himself against these accusations.
“It’s pretty hard to take your 80-something year old father to federal court on a walker when he’s falsely accused by a big corporation,” Michael White says in a 10-minute documentary about the experience. He tears up as he speaks of the difficulties his father faced in his last years. The trauma of being falsely accused and sued by such a huge company made the rest of Wayne White’s life a living hell, and the stress may well have driven him to his death.

You can see Michael White’s struggle in a short documentary called “Seeding Fear.” Produced by artist Neil Young, the film is eye-opening when it comes to the plight of farmers in the days of Monsanto. You can read the court documents from White’s trial here, which clearly show the harassment, threats, and dishonest tactics Monsanto resorted to in trying to trap the Whites into breaking patent law.
