2019 Crop Over has started its long climate starting with Pic-o-de-Crop Finals last night – Classic won – followed by Foreday Morning Jam. Today will be the street fair Bridgetown Market on the Mighty Gryner Highway and street party Kadooment on Monday.

Thousands of Barbadians and visitors have taken the opportunity to visit at this time of year. In recent days business establishments, seasides, roadways and sights of interest have been jammed.

Have a safe Crop Over Barbados!

    Yes and know.

There is aspects to anything that must be managed.

  2. Visions, visions, grand visions and not a grain of reality.

…. please note the perhaps …
Perhaps the average jump-upper 😊 is not interested in ‘culture’.

Perhaps the intrusion of music from other lands shows (1) a disconnect between our musicians and the locals, or (2) a clear separation between the local and others performers …

Fix has to come from the musicians

Please note that the” jump upper” does not need to be interested in culture ,he is the embodiment of it. He expresses it.

It is the similarity of culture that makes the assimilation of music from “other lands “easy. It is the natural African response to the rhythm of the drums.

During the recent crop-over festival no one spared a thought for poor Donville, himself a well-known party animal.

None of his former ‘fair-weather’ friends saw it fit to publicly enquire into the Don’s wellbeing.
Not even his much maligned former boss Fumble was prepared to show a measure of compassion after being chiefly instrumental in catching this potential jailbird.

Oh, how the loquacious mighty has fallen!

The former kingpin of braggadocio must be in an awful state- both physically and psychologically-after falling into national grace just because of his ‘greedy’ thirst for thirty-six pieces of $1,000.00 denominated nuggets of kickback silver.

But as the old folks used to say it takes a sprat (small fry money) to catch a whale who was swimming in the ocean of ministerial corruption for many a year going back to his halcyon days as the MoH.

The poor fella, why is he being made, quite deliberately, an example of?

Aren’t the local enforcement authorities going after his accomplices in the pursuit of Justice instead of charging working-class men for saving foreign exchange by locally cultivating and producing marijuana which is now a recreational mainstay of the Crop-over festival?

To the ‘down-and-out’ Don, just remember that when you were smiling the whole of Barbados used to smile with you.

Now that you are solely up an American creek without a paddle to buy off, don’t expect your ‘grassy’ ass to be saved by your PM friend’s interference.

Clearly you haven’t heard Classic’s song, “One Song”

Donville is immortalised in that song.

I think we share similar opinions.

I am doubtful if a country can (or should attempt) to protect its culture by limiting it exposure to outside influences. What some sees as protection. others may see as imposition of stifling rule that are stunting the growth or the evolution of the culture. Somethings may be good for touris but that does not mean it is good for us or it is “we ting”.

Changes can be difficult to accept but culture is not static. Nothing is wrong with borrowing a bit from here or there. And if we are borrowing too heavily, then what is being pushed as the national culture may be out of sync with the nationals feeling.

You wanna claim you are a big boy? Well stop crying and get out there.

    Have a great day VC

I can’t believe this is the same man who is always talking about the “new Barbadians” and their influence on Barbados in the future.

    SMH.

  9. The Minister of culture has an opportunity to write his name on history’s page.

He can make Crop Over 2020 the best ever.
