Solutions Barbados recently held their Annual General Meeting.  All Executive positions are for one-year terms, and Grenville Phillips II was re-elected to serve another term as President.

Politicians in all of the political parties, who participated in the last general election, know that politics is not only a very dirty game, but a cesspool of some of the worst types of behaviour.  The public gets a glimpse of how vile politics truly is, by the constant accusations of gross corruption that our Members of Parliament regularly accuse each other in our House of Assembly.

All politicians constantly face two main temptations, and the public always pays a very high price if politicians surrender to them.  Solutions Barbados Candidates are also aware of the significant harm to their professional reputations and their families if they fail in this manner.  Therefore, we have taken drastic steps to protect the public and our families, by willingly restraining ourselves.

The first temptation is accepting bribes, and politicians facing severe financial challenges are most vulnerable.  Politicians who cannot afford their mortgage payments are extremely vulnerable to accepting bribes.

To address the bribery temptation, all Solutions Barbados Candidates willingly sign a binding contract, to go bankrupt if they accept bribes.  Each Candidate’s contract is terminated at the end of each election cycle if the Candidate is not elected.  Once terminated, the contract may be renewed.

Of the 28 Solutions Barbados Candidates in the 2018 General Election, 17 chose to protect the public by renewing their contracts.  Of those who chose not to, approximately half found the cesspool of politics to dirty to continue, while the remainder chose to continue their quest with other parties, but unrestrained by our contract.

The second temptation is far more sinister – and permanent.  It is the corrupting influence of power.  British politician, Lord Acton, observably wrote over a century ago, “Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Great men are almost always bad men.”

From our last general election experience, it appears to be the craving for power that can corrupt previously decent people very quickly and very easily.  It also corrupts them stealthily, so that persons are unaware of how far they have fallen.  It is this craving for power that led Judas to deceptively betray Jesus.  Deception and betrayal are the two obvious symptoms of persons corrupted by craving power.

To address the corrupting influence of craving power, Solutions Barbados Candidates have deliberately chosen not to become career politicians.  We offer ourselves to the public for two simple reasons.  The first is to bring relief to Barbadians who have had enough of the gross mismanagement and political corruption that both established parties regularly accuse the other.  The second is to actively help all Barbadians to prosper.

If voters have had enough of what they have been forced to tolerate from both established parties, and want prosperity for their households, then they are welcome to support Solutions Barbados candidates – for their own benefit.  Our economic growth plan, which was independently favourably assessed, and which the Prime Minister promised would be allowed to contend (a broken promise), can still be used to bring prosperity to Barbadian households without austerity.

We are committed to offering ourselves to properly manage the public affairs of Barbados, whenever the next general election is called.  Unlike the last election when voters felt that they needed to vote against the DLP, this time, they can choose to actually vote for something good.

If voters have not yet had enough of the dirty political game by then, then we will accept their decision as final for us.  To continue to offer ourselves to an unwilling public after the next general election, is for us, to crave power.

The only honest politician there has ever been is the one whose mother is dead and whose father has not been born.

    But there is another test.

The one who voluntarily submits to the judgement of our guillotine and live to tall the tale.

Now, are you willing to so submit!

There has been the formation of the People’s Party for Democracy and Development (PPDD), led by the current and fictitious Leader of the Opposition.

It has been a disappointment that Caswell Franklyn has found himself so attached.

We would have though that you might have had something to say about this formalization of that party and the emerging balance of forces, on the ground.

Your party’s role within the new look duopoly formation.

This new party, to us, represents a mere redeployment of BLP forces. We fail to see any political current which philosophically gave birth to it. It’s shallow, at best.

We know with a fair degree of certainty that quite a few members on the other side had considered such a leap. That Atherley was the first to jump was neither a necessary nor a sufficient condition to inform a political vision. Merely personal and political opportunism.

That Caswell Franklyn has delivered himself to skate on such thin philosophical ice is worrying for the very fabric of the country.

More fundamentally, this new and faux formation, the PPDD, is no more than the BLP(2). And that such a political falsity of this magnitude could be imposed on the people of Barbados in 2019 speaks volumes to a national state of backwardness.

Because we see no distinctive raison d’etre for the birth of the PPDD we shall order the political undertakers at Two Sons to start preparing the coffin boards for that which would be so necessary after the next elections.

Of course, your own Solutions Barbados will now be sent to graze on barren pastures further into the elysian fields.

  5. Very good article.
    Don’t get distracted.
You need to have your team members show their support.

I am beginning to wonder if my team of investigative reporters, investment bankers and restructuring experts has more members than your team.

Involve your team members. They need to speak.

You are aware the official opposition party unlocks quarter million dollars in financing?

By now we should realize that the duopoly lives on. Already within the collective ranks they are identifying those who will be sacrificed in order to ensure parliament returns to its status quo in 2023. The BLPDLP strategists are hard at work together. Atherley knows this. Note the low keyed launch of the PdP.

    More to come

    Duopoly Rules

  8. David

    Of course

But the NDP did so too!

Ask Sir William Skinner, if you doubt us.

    Not only that

They are provided with an official platform to have access to the whole country, reply to the budget etc.

They are, at taxpayers’ expense given offices and staff

Seeing that this idiot Atherley is a friend of Mugabe and that there are no real political hatreds amongst them we feel confident that such a subterranean relationship will produce additional benefits as well.

This Game of Duopoly will work out just fine for all concerned, in the interim, as the one party statism proceeds on its road to perdition.

  9. Only read the headline and comments.

The headline is exactly one on the reason that people don’t want GP as PM.

    TheoG

this is exactly what people keep pushing to GP -get his people involved. Maybe he will listen to you.

Did the Maria Agard switch to Lynette’s UPP ‘unlock any quarter million’ of already scarce taxpayers’ dollars?

Isn’t this another scam to ‘officially’ bilk already overburdened taxpayers some of whose tax refunds for previous years are still years and months overdue and a blatant violation of the country’s tax laws?

Why should the Treasury be ‘forced’ to recognize political parties as parasitical pigs to feed from the money trough while the Constitution remains silent?

  11. @Miller

The official opposition is recognized. Maria Agard did not qualify did she?

    @Pacha

Has any work been done by Atherley in his capacity as Chairman of the PAC?

Who are the officers of Solutions, apart from Junior?

  13. David

You would know the answer better than we would.

However, that role has never been of any serious import.

We further doubt that Atherley has any deep interest, intellect or desire

How much could a one-man band do anyhow.

    Don’t let us fool ourselves

Atherley will dutifully mark time with a mistaken belief, engendered by some, that he could be PM.

This is pure convoluted political nonsense which needs to be addressed by changes to the Constitution.

What is this ‘heist of taxpayers’ money for? To support whom or what?

Why can’t Atherley, a pretend man of god, go back to the people who elected him to be their representative in the HoA and ask for a fresh mandate under his new green umbrella? He was elected while shading under a red parasol.

Since he claims to be a man of faith he also should be big enough (with his god’s backing) to stand on his own two ‘green’ feet presently made of ‘red’ clay.

Mr Phillips quoted a 19th century gent …but his repeated assertions of an “independently favourably assessed” economic plan causes me to recall another man born much later in that century!

The younger quote provider opined that “If you tell [an unsubstantiated assertion] big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it.”

Where is (are) the independent calculation/analysis of Solutions economic plan?

If Bajans reject him and his party at the polls again it will be based heavily on this lacking of evidence …his Goebbelesque propaganda will have failed!

But strange things happen in politics so an acceptance of his Solutions, untested and unworkable at a national level as many of them are, would be Bajans seeking miraculous salvation!

That is what boggles the mind!

Is the quarter million being unlocked for the MPs or for their “parties” which have no Constitutional presence or recognition?

  20. @Miller

It is being unlocked to the MPs that form the official opposition however it is defined under the Constitution.

  21. @ David,

Should we be discussing the apparent Bitt collapse ?

  22. @ Wily

Don’t get me started on that cause about 3 weeks ago myself, Hal and Vincent get accused of being negative on the blog and against it because of concerns we raised.

There is ONLY ONE MP who makes up the “Official Opposition”.

Isn’t he being paid a salary to reflect those ‘additional’ responsibilities /duties as Her Majesty’s LoO?

Isn’t he also entitled to allowances to operate his office or surgery as the duly elected representative of the people in the Constituency of SMW as the other MPS are so entitled?

What is this $250,000.00 of taxpayers’ money for? To give to Scott We(a)therhead & Co for consultancy, speech -writing and research services rendered?

Don’t worry I got a plan for you fellows.

Let BITT issue you fellows virtual bonds and then we going open a virtual bank for wunna to bank them.

Then every month we going send you a virtual cheque paying 15 % interest on the bond that you could then deposit into you virtual savings account in the same virtual bank.

Yes and you could then buy virtual cars with the money and thing!

I know i only talking crap, but hey in the virtual world imagination is limitless.

  36. @ Hal

Seriously now I don’t believe we will hear anything from him. I think his hope would be that Bitt honour all the coin out there and that come August 29th all holders are redeemed with actual currency. That way the issue will be settled without any embarrassment to the ” system”.

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

If we were to follow the audit trail left by your double dose of hypocrisy is this the same OSA you washed your mouth on when he was the Leader of the Opposition from 2011 to 2013?

Is this the same fortune-telling OSA who, sitting as an Independent, in the 2013 to 2018 parliament constantly beseeched your supremely incompetent and arrogantly cocksure Humpty-Dumpty DLP government to seek help from the IMF before it becomes too late to put the same “166 back together again”?

Barbados lost its way when it started to borrow more money from people overseas than it was earning from selling things to people overseas in order to finance its conspicuous consumption habit.

A disease simply called: “Living above your means”. And Barbados has a ‘terminal’ case of it.

  38. Barbados is but a stone step away from the politics of Haiti
wherby everyday the people overthrow the govts
The IMF policies all but have laid the ground work for that much to happen
Imagine having to buy one small tangerine for 1.50 .
    unbelivable

  39. In MY opinion, this is a very cleverly written article by Grenville Phillips II.

Approximately one month after the May 24, 2018 general elections, a statement, signed by former Solutions Barbados members, Alan Springer, Paul Gibson and Irvin Belgrave, “itemised other concerns such as a contract used “as a control mechanism for keeping candidates in the party, lack of a democratic process and being punished if they failed to sign the original contract.”

On Saturday January 19, 2019, Opposition Leader Bishop Joseph Atherley named a team to speak on behalf of the Opposition………. and on Saturday, June 8, 2019, he officially launched his new political party, the People’s Party for Democracy and Development. These Opposition spokespersons/members included five (5) former members of Solutions Barbados, namely, Alan Springer, Irvin Belgrave, Rev John Carter, Paul Gibson and Scott Weatherhead.

I also paid specific attention to GPII’s below comments:

“Of the 28 Solutions Barbados Candidates in the 2018 General Election, 17 chose to protect the public by renewing their contracts. Of those who chose not to, approximately half found the cesspool of politics to dirty to continue, while the remainder chose to continue their quest with other parties, but unrestrained by our contract.”

“From our last general election experience, it appears to be the craving for power that can corrupt previously decent people very quickly and very easily. It also corrupts them stealthily, so that persons are unaware of how far they have fallen. It is this craving for power that led Judas to deceptively betray Jesus. Deception and betrayal are the two obvious symptoms of persons corrupted by craving power.”

“To continue to offer ourselves to an unwilling public after the next general election, is for us, to crave power.”

When I compare the events I outlined above……. with GPII”s comments…… is he making subtle references to Alan Springer, Irvin Belgrave, Rev John Carter, Paul Gibson and Scott Weatherhead…….

……… who represents the “remainder,” that were “previously decent people,” who subsequently became corrupted as a result of their “craving for power,” ….. and having “chosen to continue their quest with other parties,” ……..

……… ultimately deceived and betrayed GPII in the process?

But going forward the task at hand is to take Barbados out of rough seas to calmer waters
Mia knows she could not get the job done
Reason why she used back door tactics and fell gracefully into the arms of the. IMF who OSA has called a govt by default which has taken full control of barbados economic affairs
These new movers and shakers are here to stay and nothing Granville or Atherley does would change the process of having the long arm of the IMF sitting at barbados economic table looking out for themselves first

  43. Where ignorance is bliss ‘tis folly to be wise.

Did Atherley say last week that there is no Budget allocated under a separate head for the LoO? His office has to rely on the good grace of the clerk of parliament.

Tek that in your pipe and smoke it
The truth being that Mia can now be called a figure head one which speaks and implement policies on behalf of the IMF
Rather you want to belive such or not what cannot be disputed is that Mia language to help the people does not match the austerity policies which were dictated to her by the IMF

  50. @ David.

Go to barbados today and read the statement where it says ” they are closing their exchange desk by August 29th “. If the desk is closed and the coin can no longer be traded or redeemed after that date holders would have to therefore comply with that date as the last date they could transact with the coin.

Unless they plan to convert the outstanding Bitcoin held to Mmoney and let you trade what you have in that format.

That was however not stated so we can’t go forward on that assumption
