Nature changes our world and human nature changes our world. And they both affect each other. The earth has a history of natural disasters and man-made disasters.

Unless it’s part of our job, most of us hurry and scurry without giving a mere thought to the billions of years in regard to celestial and earthly changes. Too much rain is a flood and too much sun is a desert. Of course, we shake in our boots when disasters like Hurricane Katrina destroy human life or when California earthquakes or blazing woodland fires wreak havoc. And we curse Mother Nature when other countries experience cataclysmic disasters; the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami and the 2017 hurricanes that ravaged Puerto Rico and the Caribbean Islands.

A conversational storm ensures about the ozone and global warming, in the wake of melting glaciers and increased floods. Both sides argue for their truths. We go about our daily lives; working, paying bills and raising our families. Notably, the world experienced substantial change far before the existence of human beings and pollution. As an ecosystem, nature strives for equilibrium. Can we treat our planet more kindly?

The universe changes and this includes the planets, stars, and all other cosmic bodies. Albert Einstein theorized the universe had a beginning; therefore the universe will have an ending. Matter and molecules change. Humankind has changed outer space by way of space pollution. Discoveries come with a price.

Earth, our colossal home of dirt and rocks, changes. Fire burns the forest and new growth appears. Seeds are planted and harvested. We dig up our backyards for pools and gardens. Soil and sand erode and are replaced or lost to bodies of water to be recycled in a million epochs. Industry changes the landscape. Humans irresponsibly consume in excess and pollute. We point a finger at the destroyers of the Amazon rainforest, but conveniently forget about one of the most horrendous environmental tragedies in American history; the toxic dumpsite called Love Canal in New York. The Chernobyl accident in 1986 was a catastrophic nuclear disaster. Contamination changes our planet.

Weather is a daily global occurrence of change. Sun, rain, wind, snow, sleet. Seasons change as the earth rotates. Major volcano eruptions, mountain landslides, and historical hurricanes happen. We expect changes in weather and in nature. Do we expect changes in how humans take care of the earth and the universe?

Many of us fear or ignore change. Embroiled in a history of ecological transformation, how did we become so annoyed with change in our daily lives? How did we become so separated from our organic and environmental roots? You can’t stop progress or can you?

For the masses, workaholism blots out time with nature and I’ll admit to being a reformed workaholic. Several years ago, an exhaustion meltdown pointed me in the direction of rest. I took a timeout and discovered relaxation. Insight into my overworking had visited in earlier times, but insight without response and change is only insight. Work is therapeutic, but so are rest, recreation, and play. Strive for balance in daily life and in the mist of change. And spend time in nature’s playground.

I’ve found deepening change by spending more time in natural environments instead of shopping malls. Solitude and nature can coexist on your patio as you meditate, read, pray. Take a hint from nature and beautify your surroundings. Small changes— are often the big changes. Bird watching has become a popular activity along with creating butterfly gardens and sweet havens for hummingbirds. City life doesn’t have to negate trips to the woods. Spending time outside affects your inside.

Our bodies are around seventy percent water and without it we perish. The next time you turn on the water facet—say thank you for the vital liquid. We breathe oxygen from trees, plants, and the atmosphere. We need the natural environment to sustain life. Therefore, we need to learn to interact in healthier ways with the bodies of water on our earth home.

Nature is an awesome playground and many people experience fun, laughter, and the making of memories from the mountains to the beaches. Hiking, bicycling, swimming, boating, picnicking, and outdoor activities stimulate and refresh the mind, body, and spirit. Lee Ann Womack sings, “I hope you still feel small when you stand beside the ocean.” The awesome splendor of nature leaves me speechless and puts a mystical perspective on priorities. I’ve vacationed at the beach and each oceanic experience is connected to a physical and spiritual reawakening. A few days with sun and sand reduces stress and promotes a sense of tranquility. Visiting the Caribbean Islands is on my bucket list.

Humans interact with the environment by way of the senses (sight, hearing, touch, taste, and smell) and reconnecting our senses via nature heightens awareness, enhances curiosity, and gives perspective. Henry Beston wrote “The three great elemental sounds in nature are the sound of rain, the sound of wind in a primeval wood, and the sound of outer ocean on a beach.” Observing nature’s reaction to change may enhance resiliency and adaptation to what we cannot change and flexibility for what we can change.

Before you trot off to work each morning take 5 minutes and gaze at the sky. Inhale the air and exhale slowly. Stay in the moment. Reflect on the here-and-now.

I invite you to turn off technology gadgets and go outside with family or friends on weekends. Put worries on the back burner for a while. Do this on a consistent basis and incorporate it into your personal lifestyle. Think about it. Life changes and goes by unnoticed unless we intentionally stop and literally smell the roses along the way. You can make inside and outside changes in your own corner of the world while advocating for worldwide pollution management.

Try the following activities:

1. Go outside some night this week and gaze at the stars. Consider the physical properties of stars. What are stars made of? Do stars change? How are humans connected to the universe? the sun? the moon? How does the earth change when it rotates around the sun? Jump up and down and play with gravity.

2. Try to name the planets. What planet would you want to visit and why?

3. Pick a morning and watch the sunrise. Jot down your feelings.

4. Hold some soil in your hand. Describe how humans depend on these items for survival.

5. Purchase a plant for your windowsill. Ponder on the ingredients it needs to grow. What causes stunted growth?

6. Visit a body of water (i.e., pond, lake, river, stream, creek, ocean) and just lounge and listen.

7. Listen to the next rainstorm. Close your eyes and imagine you are a raindrop.

8. Discuss how your daily life activities change with each of the four seasons.

9. Make a home for toads and frogs in your backyard because they eat flies and bugs. Make peace with helper insects, bugs, and spiders, as they are a vital part of nature and the food chain.

10. Make a compost heap in your backyard from leafs and food scraps.

11. Pick up the trash regularly on the street or road where you live.

12. Read the eye-opening book, Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children From Nature-Deficit Disorder by Richard Louv. We must teach our children to love and respect nature so future generations will flourish as planet earth flourishes.

13. Reread Silent Spring by Rachel Carson. Published in 1962, this book is credited for laying the foundation for the environmental movement.

14. Consider joining a conservation organization or environmental club. Donate to the association of your choice.

15. Ollie Outside by Michael Oberschneider is a picture book that invites kids and parents to get outdoors and focus on family fun. Read it under a tree with your children.

Mother Nature and human nature are perpetually linked. And Albert Einstein proclaimed, “Everything is determined, the beginning as well as the end, by forces over which we have no control. It is determined for the insect, as well as for the star. Human beings, vegetables, or cosmic dust, we all dance to a mysterious tune, intoned in the distance by an invisible piper.”

  1. The article is basically an exposition on ecology: the need for a balance inter-action between the biotic and abiotic. It is also full of introspection on therapeutic benefits to be derived from such. A well argued article.

  2. How many Barbadians appreciate the balance we should have with Mother Nature? To observe children- adults of tomorrow – tossing garbage through the windows of moving vehicles driven by adults does not bode well.

  3. A white American woman with a PhD setting the agenda again on a black-focussed blog? When are we going to learn? This article is bollocks. Next she will be saying climate change is far more important than racial equality. We have had the same with feminism and LGBT rights. Race is very much yesterday, according to this logic.

  4. @David, great article as it’s an excellent article that speaks the #UnpalatableTruth and not the #SelfServingTruth.

No one wants to speaks about the lack of FOIA

No one seems to to realize the laws governing the masses seems to be more of a priority for government and never legislators

No one seems to realize that current school curriculum has become irrelevant for kids of today as AI will make many current jobs obsolete in 20 years

We ignore the approximate 1.2 million cellphones discarded yearly in our landfills

We still think government should be given jobs for life rather than contracts

We ignore the buying of political parties by companies through election financing

Many vehicles with Z plates but not taxis

Malicious gossip about the sale of government instruments

The punishment of ambition of those who have pulled themselves from poverty

We allow leaders to encourage mediocrity and the the entitlement Syndrome

#GoatsieSheepleSyndrome is so powerful many just don’t know fact from fiction and resist every effort to enlightenment

  6. We are the Pachamama!

    We are the Mother nature.

We could have Afrikan peoples living in harmony, and on every ‘continent’, with the Great Mother for hundreds of thousands of years.

Then all of a sudden Whitey comes along and fucks up every natural system. In less than 500 hundred years, could wrought all that.

    Kills hundreds of species monthly

    Destroys the polar ice caps

    And more, much more

Then, they will pretend to want to save the Great Mother

There is only but one solution!

@ Hal, there is a dictum that goes along the lines of: keep ur friends close and ur enemies closer.

Not to suggest really that the author is our enemy per se but rather in a broader sense that understanding/regularly debating the vibes/perceptions of those who are ostensibly unlike us is fundamentally a wise thing.

Get off ur high horse and accept the Blogmaster’s practical perspective to engage opinions from OTHERS so that we can avoid (excuse the foreign language) a continuous cluster f*** of our own “insular/ethocentric” verbiage!

Get real please! Your “[a] white American woman with a PhD setting the agenda again on a black-focussed blog” is absurd small minded folly!

MEANWHILE I WILL CONTINUE TO HOLD FAST TO THE TENETS OF 2 PETER 3:7 ET SECQ WHICH MAKES MORE SENSE

7 But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.

8 But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.

9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

10 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.

11 Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness,

12 Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?

  13. @ Vincent,

It is sad you are joining in this nonsense. Cultural appropriation is central to the question of identity. It is not peripheral, nor does it negate intersectional debates. To suggest that is folly.
Cultural interpretation is about nuance, how a group sees itself, not how someone tells the group it should see itself. These things are important.
I will give an example, since these best illustrate what is being said. Sometime ago the BBC tried to get my involvement in a documentary on the late Stephen Lawrence; for the reasons outlined above, and the way the narrative has already gone. I declined.
Last Thursday night I was scrolling through the television, looking for something to watch before going to bed when I came across a programme on Stephen on BBC2.
I decided to watch, sine I played a very small footnote in the story. As I said, that little bit came up and the story line told was totally misleading and wrong – but it suited the popular and dominant narrative about the role of the Daily Mail in the story.
If we do not write our own history then we betray future generations. And we can only do that by being in control, not by being an interviewee.
I will give another example: literary journalism is very big in the UK and the Times Literary Supplement is the main organ. But on the few occasions they review books by black authors or about black people, with the exception of one former BBC Radio producer, all the reviewers are white or American. So, again the black view is marginalised. It is an ongoing debate between white people about black people. We are cultural curiosities in a human zoo. Maybe you do not see the importance of that. Just imagine that every book by or about Barbados is reviewed by a Nigerian who lives in Nigeria.
If we are discussing climate change and the destruction of the environment, then there must be a black view. That is why the Chinese rightly say that it was the West that threatened the environment with the internal combustion engine and their so-called scientific discoveries and therefore they must pay the price. The burden falls on their shoulders.
Equally, the new debate is that since climate change and the future of humanity is now central, any concerns that black people have must be put on wait; the same thing was said about the urgency and importance of feminism, and about LGBT rights.
But, I am not here to convince people; I am simply making sure that an alternative view is out on record so that young people can see that at least some of us are putting a case.

  18. persuant to my post at April 25, 2019 10:21 AM let me add these remarks from my DMin thesis

In 2 Peter 3:10 Peter tells us that the heavens will pass away and be burned up. This is a most remarkable and relevant passage especially for this present hour, because it has silenced a lot of the more honest scoffers. It also contributes to our understanding of creation, in the light of our current scientific knowledge. This verse once occasioned much laughter and mockery as the question was posed, “How can the world burn when most of the world is water.” It then seemed inconceivable to the scoffers that water could burn. That criticism is now out of vogue with the discovery that water is composed of two very inflammable gases which burn most readily.

Based on the theory of the eternity of matter–a premise on which much of science was based until about 90 years ago, with the work on atomic theory by Bohr, Rutherford, Pauling et al-the critics opined that this passage could not be fulfilled since matter was indestructible and eternal. Whereas once the critics ridiculed this passage and humble sincere Bible scholars who had no answer of explanation, had to be quiet; now, believers have had the last laugh. Not only do we know that it can happen, we also know how it can happen.

In verse 7 we are told that the earth as it exists has been stored up for fire and literally with fire; thus signifying that there are resident forces present in the world which could destroy it. These concepts are known from experiments on chemical bonding- the glue that keeps matter together, and the discovery that most chemical reactions are exothermic, that is they give off heat, proves the claims of this verse. The effects of the release of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima and in experiments in the dessert in New Mexico, demonstrated conclusively how accurate a scientific statement this verse is, and how simply it was put 2000 years ago. It is just that man has finally now caught up with his Physical Chemistry homework!

In 2 Peter 3:10 we must also note that the word “noise” (Greek rhoizedon) is the word used for the swish of an arrow, the rush of wings, the splash of water, the hiss of a serpent. This is a word from classical Greek and used by the poets such that the sound of the word carries its own meaning. This word is used in the New Testament nowhere else and this specific sound implied is the best description of an exothermic chemical reaction and that of the sound of atomic explosion. Next it is worthy of note the fact that the elements will be dissolved or melt or untied with fervent heat. The word “elements” refers to basic material, atoms, the building blocks of the universe. This word is used of putting building blocks in a row or series, or of the first steps of a child. It is that which is primary or foundational, that out of which a thing is made. “Fervent heat” is energy.

These descriptive words make us think of an atomic explosion. Whereas we are not saying that atomic fission or atomic bombs is the way in which God will destroy the world that is, we are saying that God has revealed to us that this passage makes good sense and has simultaneously silenced the critics. We can see both a logical and scientific way in which the world that is, can be destroyed. This verse is simultaneously revealing how the world must have been made at the sub-molecular level. It was done simply by the opposite to what will occur at it’s destruction!

The word used for “melt” or “dissolve” in 2 Peter 3:10 to describe the future demolition of the elements is the Greek luo. This word has also been translated “loose” or “untie”. It basically describes the breaking of chemical bonds. If God can untie chemical bonds in the eschaton, is it too difficult to conceive that he tied them initially at the creation? We must see that whereas, the Scriptures does not claim to be a Science text, it makes very simple, but very accurate scientific statements in a very matter of fact way. This is because these issues are very infinitesimal to God, even though it took man several millennia to unravel, and even though he has not yet fully understood all the details.

NOW WHEN YOU HEAR MORONS TALKING ABOUT GLOBAL WARMING DONT GET ALARMED

IT CERTAINLY IS NOT CAUSED BY CARBON EMISSIONS BECAUSE THIS HAS BEEN PROVEN TO CAUSE THE GREENING OF THE PLANET BY THE FORMATION OF THE MOST PREVALENT AND ABUNDANT CARBOHYDRATE —– CELLULOSE. THE SUBSTANCE OF WHICH PLANT MATERIAL IS MADE

THINK OF WHAT THIS REALLY MEANS But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.

PERHAPS THE FIRE HAS STARTED TO GRADUALLY BE RELEASED FROM THE SEVERAL SUBTERRESTRIAL AND SUBOCEANIC VOLCANOES

  26. Nature changes our World

Wrong. Nature never changes nature is consistent
Nature is design by time models built into a systematic program that provides all the necessary components for life

Man changes and in so doing has used all levels of technology to change nature models and systematic designs were were designed to provide a good quality of life for mankind
E.g the air we breathe was not approved or assigned by Mother Nature to be polluted
The changes in the air we breathe now being polluted was cause by mankind
The consistency of nature to correct mankind faults and failure through floods earthquakes and other disasters is one way of Mother Nature bringing a balance and a way of cleansing in the enviroment
Unfortuately along the way lives our lost
However that is not Mother Nature fault or a called to.say Mother Nature is changing but rather Mother Nature using a protective model to save the enviroment and mankind from total disaster

Until this temporal phase of human existence ends – whether by accident or grand design – we have to coexist notwithstanding the infallibility of man.

I DONT KNOW EXACTLY WHAT YOU MEAN BY this temporal phase of human existence ends WHETHER INDIVIDUALLY OR AS A WHOLE

COEXISTENCE DOES NOT MEAN THAT YOU CAN NOT SEEK TO CORRECT “the infallibility of man”

    BULL SHIT IS BULLSHIT.

When we talk about who directs the narrative, the nonsensical celebration of Anzac Day in Barbados is one example. Why? How many Barbadian soldiers died at Gallipoli?

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

    Funny you should ask!!

But you should really ask where in WWI did Barbadian and Anzac soldiers fight and die together?

    https://www.sbs.com.au/news/where-anzacs-fought-in-wwi

I was looking at a Barbadian family, Grayfoot, a while back.

I met a descendant who had emigrated to Australia.

Bet nobody ever heard of that family name!!

“PALESTINE: Australian and New Zealand mounted troops fought in the successful campaign to drive Turkish forces out of Palestine and the Sinai.”

30th December 1917 surrender of Jerusalem by the Turks!!

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sinai_and_Palestine_Campaign

B.B. Grayfoot appears on the war memorial in Harrison College as well as the Cenotaph in Bridgetown.

Son of the Rev. C. Grayfoot and Anna, his wife; husband of Matilda Jane Grayfoot, of 96, Heene Rd., Worthing.

He was a doctor in the Indian Medical Corps aged 56 at the time of his death on 30 September 1916.

He held the rank of Colonel.

His father was rector at Holy Innocents in St. Thomas, 1841 – 1843.

He died in the Sinai-Palestine campaign in WWI where Anzacs also died.

Jerusalem …… a pretty significant city.

The British West India Regiment fought in the Sinai-Palestine campaign.

If you want to find out how many Bajans died in that campaign and their names, just go to the Cenotaph in Bridgetown.

You can then research their names on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and see where they are buried.

Imagine that … Bajans died in operations to capture Jerusalem, 1915-1917.

Did you know the Balfour Declaration was in 1918?

The result, a Jewish homeland … Bible Prophesy.

ACTUALLY the Balfour Declaration WAS AN ACT OF ANTSEMITISM THAT LED TO THE FALL OF THE BRITISH EMPIRE ACCORDING TO THE PROPHESY OF GENESIS 12:3

  39. Debating any issue with you with a political leaning has proved through the years to be a futile exercise.

Will end by saying that the poor design and maintenance of the sewage systems which extends to most of our physical infrastructure, there is enough blame to go around. The problem will take millions to fix. The effort so far is meant to stabilize. One cannot fix this issue by the snap of a finger. It is why the refusal of the former government to address the problems makes it nauseating to stomach. The turn of this government will come when it will be judge. The forgoing is stated knowing that campaign promises are meant to achieve an end.

    Thanks for the learning.

The Jewish State then, … loss of India (Jewel in the Crown) and a string of “Independence” declarations by various members of the Empire.

“I will bless those who bless you And curse him that curses you; And all the families of the earth Shall bless themselves by you. Genesis 12:3”

“The Balfour Declaration signed in 1917 was the culmination of 300 years of restoration in the Church,” Briggs explained.

“By signing the declaration, Britain was making a promise that was based in the covenant between God and Abraham. The world agreed by giving Britain a mandate.

Great Britain failed to fulfill this promise, drawing lines on the map along the Jordan where none should have been.”

Briggs noted that retribution for dividing the land was foretold in prophecy.

I will gather all the nations And bring them down to the Valley of Yehoshafat. There I will contend with them Over My very own people, Yisrael, Which they scattered among the nations. For they divided My land among themselves. Joel 4:2

“Britain did not carry the mandate through as they were entrusted to do.

Britain illegally annexed the Golan Heights, transferring it to the French, who gave it to Syria,” Briggs explained.

“When Israel conquered the Golan in 1967, it was clearly God setting that straight.”

“Just as Britain divided Israel in contravention of the covenant of Abraham, Britain was itself divided,” Briggs said. “It used to be said that the ‘sun never set on the British Empire.’

When the Balfour Declaration was signed, we were at our zenith but now we are just an island off the shore of Europe. We used to be a major world power unto ourselves instead of being just another country in the European Union.” (For now at least).
