I’m to ask and every right thinking person must be wondering: in whose interest is the Mia Mottley Administration managing the affairs of this country? I would not be so silly to suggest that previous administration left this country in good order.  And I would be the first to admit that the new administration needed…

I’m to ask and every right thinking person must be wondering: in whose interest is the Mia Mottley Administration managing the affairs of this country?

I would not be so silly to suggest that previous administration left this country in good order.  And I would be the first to admit that the new administration needed to take measures to restructure and stabilise the economy.  But so far, the measures imposed by this new labour party administration has shown a merciless disregard for the plight of the most vulnerable in this society.  As promised, the Government removed the much vilified National Society Responsibility Levy (NSRL), which was collected from the merchant class up front, and replaced it with a series of punitive measures that took particular aim at the poor and labouring classes in the country.

This country is badly in need of revenue and the Government seems content to raise the necessary funds to run the country by taxing the people that a labour party was philosophically set up to protect.  On the other hand, this administration has moved swiftly to ensure that its friends and family are protected from the ravages of this marauding tax collecting machine that came into power on May 25, 2018.

This administration has even placed a tax on water, while at the same time forgiving the billions of dollars in income taxes that were owed mainly by the merchant class, who fund election campaigns, and by their close friends and family.

Last December the Government introduced and passed an amendment to the Income Tax Act to write off taxes that were owed by persons between 1968 and 2000.  The cynical among us, including me, believe that this was a measure aimed at giving tax relief to the Prime Minister’s father.

The country did not cry out about that atrocity and that has emboldened the Government to prepare legislation that would write off the Value Added Tax (VAT) that was collected and stolen by VAT registrants between 1996 and 2000.  The furniture store, Courts, is set to receive a write off of the principal sum of $35 million not included interest and penalties, that will also be written off by this legislation.

Lord, the people of this country prayed for a change but if they only knew what they would have gotten.  I am reminded of what my grandmother would say:  BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU PRAY FOR, YOU MIGHT GET IT.

    Sometimes, I cannot follow the logic of my fellow Mugabites.

    They would point out how incompetent the DLP were and then justify the actions of the BLP by pointing out the DLP did the same thing. If the DLP were that bad, why should WE use them as our model?

    Under the cover of darkness on Friday March 01, 2019, the Barbados Parliament passed the Caribbean Community Amendment Bill 2019 which amongst other things grants the following rights to Caricom citizens entering Barbados:

    No work permits needed for spouses of Caricom nationals

    Spouse is also defined as a common law spouse

    Free education and healthcare to Caricom citizens and their dependents residing in Barbados, including University education

    Do Bajans really understand the implications and consequences of this move by our Parliamentarians?

    Whilst PM Mottley is in a naked hurry to emerge as the leader in Caricom, she must do it in a manner that is not injurious to the economic and social wellbeing of Barbadians and Barbados.

    Whilst it is ok to speak of contingent rights, the reality is that within the Caricom experience it is nothing but a pipe dream. The disparity of our social services makes this a joke.

    Show me which Bajan is going to move to Guyana or Jamaica and get the same quality healthcare or education as they get at home?

    Bajans must now prepare for an influx of Caricom citizens including Haitians. I am not xenophobic, I am simply realistic.

    We struggle to sustain our hard fought education and healthcare systems to allow them to be compromised by strangers in our midst.

    We will hear that Caricom citizens residing here will pay taxes too but realistically they will never pay enough to cover such costs.

    In 10 years time we will not recognize our island. Its culture will be changed, its dialect will be different and its economy worse off.

    Please Bajans, wake up and let Mia, Edmund Hinkson et al know that this Bill needs full ventilation in every corner of Barbados before any further action.

    Keep up. It is not to say the DLP did it therefore the BLP has a right to do it. It was to highlight the fact that it is a strategy used by the previous government and, as I mentioned in a previous post, used by many governments and states in America to boost government revenue. The collection of unpaid taxes is not as straight forward as many of you are purporting. But hey, this is BU where everyone is an expert in nothing. The joke is that the amnesty has expired and nuff businesses and individuals (including many in here) still owe the state.🤣🤣

    What this should be classified as BLP Government approved VAT theft by Business people and Professionals 1996 to 2000.

    The public does not directly benefit from VAT it is a TAX where money is taken out of one’s pocket to benefit the Society as a whole.

    I find it more than passing strange that you are now joining David et al and attempting to shift blame from the ruling class to the people now trying to reference them as “households.”Note that your martyr David said : “all roads” lead to the “households”

    There has been no backward shift on our part. Only as wrongly perceived by you. Why would we so shift when all of our assessment are turning to truisms.

    Unlike you, we have long made the assessment that the problems with the Caribbean are neither caused by bad leadership, like you have contended for decades, nor the households as you report David as postulating. Our determination has long been that the Caribbean and much of the rest of the world would have reached this present juncture, and worse to come, sooner or later.

    That this present and historical juncture would have happened even if we had the best of ‘LEADERSHIPS’ and/or ‘households’ possible.

    A man with your political acumen should be well aware that this is what Karl Marx warned about. We will all do well to re-read his magisterial critique of capitalism, now over 100 years old. Even those here who would want to preserve capitalism would do well to consult Das Capital to understand the Marxian critique.

    So if we have erred, the existential or lived realities are also not real. Meaning,the people in the world are not now suffering and have not continually suffered under the yoke of capitalism.

    In addition, we would therefore be in the most esteemed company of Marx as a colossus, a transcendental historical personage. For that we thank you, but demure. LOL

    The money foregone as duties and taxes on the forex-leaking most unsuitable Mercedes driven by the political paramour (whore) of the BDLP duopoly on the autobahns of little shithole Barbados, if collected retroactively, could go a long way in meeting the weekly wages bill of the Transport Board limping along with less than 50 buses on the road but carrying a manpower capacity of over 500 idle hands.

    The miller is a pragmatist when it comes to bread and butter matters.
    Those well-off tax evaders continue- like the “white” planter and merchant class of colonial Barbados- to suck from the sore nipples of the poor black ‘indirect’ VAT taxpayers who faithfully contribute to the national pig trough called the Treasury.

    If this country is not careful it might just witness a repeat of the 1937 cycle which gave rise to the need for a Moyne Commission set of recommendations for socio-economic improvements.

    Why do we have to choose?

    Yea the story is still on social media albeit that it was sensationalized . However the story which reference the ammendment put forwarded in parliament and sign by other Caricom nations with the exclusion of four is worth being debated especially at time when barbados economy is swimming in deep doo and can least afford the weight and burden of of being generous in extending a helping hand to Caricom nationals at this time
    Not saying that the ammendment is wrong but govt should not be so hastened at this time in taking on more financial burden than it can handle

    How did the Transport Board returned to this situation after retrenching several employees in 2014 and up to this time last year they had at least 80 buses operating per day, even although they employed a $22,000 a month consultant and 5 mechanics from Trinidad?

    Does this mean more bus drivers were hired in 2015, 2016, 2017 or up to May 2018, although the bus availability per day was gradually dwindling?

    Maybe Mariposa or Fractured BLP could shed some light on this.

Isn’t the dream to have one Caribbean Caricom Single Market and Economy and the free movement of Caribbean nationals something that would be good for the region? Mottley maybe a Rogue and a rogue cannot hide behind an integrity front when you are constituted with nastiness. But, I see nothing wrong with this. However, you are right in your 11:13 pm post ( Lord I agreeing). Barbados is in no condition to take on the burden of extra people and surely not one to put added pressure from increasing numbers on an out of sync health care system.

    The last set of Caribbean nationals from St. Vincent who thought they were going to be treated well in Barbados came to the island as laborers for Bjerkham and Tempro…were mistreated so badly, had their human rights violated and were treated just like slaves…by those two criminal demons…. that the workers had to appeal to the St. Vincent government to help them return home…

    you are dealing with the nastiest of house negros in the parliament who see nothing wrong with their own black people oe other Caribbean nationals being treated like slaves by the lowlife thieves on the island who call themselves employers…as long as they themselves benefit and inflate their pockets from it..

    But if they think they getting away with those nasty human rights violations to enrich themselves forever…ticktock.

    I met a young lady yesterday…was very impressed listening to her and how she planned to go about making the requisite changes that will see the DOWNFALL…of the classist, racist wickedness and disenfranchisement that passes for employee, employer relations in Barbados…i was very proud..a word i rarely use and never abuse or take lightly….. to listen to this young woman rationalize and analyze HOW the evil that has been practiced against black bajans…with the blessings of AND enabled by both black governments for over the last 60 years…was allowed to continue unchecked by the titled asses in parliament, in the bar association, in government house, in UWI and in every other crab hole in which ya can find titled asses…

    However what is wrong is govt haste in siging an ammendment at present time that would locked govt into providing all social benefits for Caricom nationals and extending family members at a time when govt is struggling to pay its debt
    We cant be our brothers keeper when we do not have the financial were withal to provide for self
    The long and short is systematic of a prententious govt making promises once again that it cannot keep and once again restorting to political gainsake in the name of self interest
    How can it be possible that govt say it is broke and begging and borrowing from every Tom dick and Mary including the pain and suffering heaped on the peoples back to pay debt then to go ahead and signed an ammendment which would give Caricom nationals the same privileges as native citizens which include free housing educations and a mirage of social services
    Barbados at present time can not be all things to every one
    Barbados debt profile is very much in the red and govt should have weighed the economic consequences to this amendment against the economic realities before signing thd bill
    But then again Barbadians are the great pretenders having Mauby pockets and wanting to live the life of millionaires

    I see the usual Bajan ADHD is at work again and we cannot concentrate on any issue for any period of time. However, the cronyism of a VAT amnesty goes right to the heart of this government and, given we have no opposition, challenges the media to do their work.
    Are any of the companies which benefited from the VAT amnesty in further arrears with their more recent VAT payments? If so, are these companies going to be forced to pay this VAT debt? Are any of the directors or owners of the rogue companies members of or associated with the Social Partnership? If so, will they be asked to resign? Are any of these businesses n the tourism sector? If so, do they still benefit from other fiscal initiatives to stimulate the industry?
    Was this amnesty discussed with the IMF, or was it suggested by the IMF? f so why? What is the economic justification? This also raises questions about zombie companies that should have long been out of business but are using taxpayers’ money to keep afloat.
