i do believe we must do some real research into some of the factors for this however instead of speculating.
for instance those reading for sociology/ criminology type degrees at UWI or BCCC could be allowed to interview persons incarcerated or even arrested for anti social behaviour and see what they say. equally school children can be interviewed also.

Then many past and present members of the RBPF who did masters degrees in Criminology would have presented papers on criminology in Barbados.
I think we need to look for the incentives driving ordinary citizens to express their anger so finally for the victim.

The spike in the murder rate in Barbados should not surprise us. The Caribbean region homicide rates are shocking and will continue to grow exponentially with the expansion of migration throughout the Caribbean. Barbados has a homicide rate of 10.91. It is seen as being an attractive country amongst those Caribbean islands where crime is rampant. Therefore the majority of our Caribbean migrants are coming from Jamaica, which has a homicide rate of 47.01 and Guyana which has a homicide rate of 18.37. It does not take a genius to work out where this is heading. Yet we are told by the elite that Caricom and the free movement of her citizens is a good thing.
By the way Barbados homicide rate is double that of the USA (5.35) and the same as Russia (10.82) where gun ownership is much higher than it is in Barbados.
What about the continent of Africa where poverty is endemic? Well Nigeria has a homicide rate of 9.85, Kenya 4.87 and Somalia 4.31.
The rates are per 100,000 of the population. Please check the link below and the year of the survey as it varies from country to country.
We talk about rising murder rate. We expect that by a law or the mouthings from a politician the rate will decline. We have been receiving deportees from the USA and other places for many years. We have seen the seeds of gangs in our communities and we ignore, we allow a culture of we (people) against them (law) to flourish. Under both governments we have seen the PSV sub culture take deep root. On an on we can go but it suits some of us to politicise a matter that is fuelled by a complex set issues.
Clearly the government is not blameless as a key stakeholder in the process but…

Was it a trend or just an outlier.
It is not my intention to make light of the death of anyone. But Bajans jumped on the number of murders in January and set off helter-skelter shouting that “the sky is falling, the sky is falling”.
The month of February appears to be rather mild. but we do not see follow-up articles commending the on the ‘police’ putting the brakes on the increase of gun violence.
It has always befuddled me, on how people expect police to stop some crimes before they occur, but as the police usually draw the ire of citizens when crime increases , we should give them credit when the trajectory changes for the better.

I find the stabbing of two females in St, Lucy to be rather disturbing and hope they are not related for that could signal the presence of a ‘repeat offender’.
Does that fact that two of the stabbed females were over 65 tells us anything?
It would probably be good if the information was displayed on a map so that the average Bajan could see if these stabbings/shootings were stacked one on the other (in a very small area).

There were years you could come here and google until the cows come home and find it difficult to get a good count of the number of murders in Barbados. At least, for the month of January, the numbers were available. Let’s hope that the transparency continues.

We are comfortable with our homicide rates as they are a lot lower then Jamaica, Trinidad, Guyana and the majority of the rest of our neighbours. It makes us feel proud that we better than them! We have become sadly complacent with everything in Barbados. What does this say about us?

In Ontario it is recognized if the couple lived together for 3 years, or if they lived together for one year and have a child. If they separate, what they brought to the relaltionship is theirs out right and what was accumulated is split. So, if you move into a partner’s house you cant claim half. There are no illegitimate children in Ontario.
The show being hosted by Sanka Price today is about children not finishing high school for whatever reason I.e. expulsion, delinquent homes etc involving themselves in crime.

I was not talking at all about outside families, that is the children born to a married man who is still living in the same house as his wife, but who has a child or children with another woman or women, and that woman or those women are aware that he is married.
In many of the cases I quoted above the couples did indeed GET MARRIED, and after the marriage, the husband/father nevertheless abandoned his wife and the children of his marriage.
Surely you do understand that marriage does not guarantee that a man will be a good father [or a woman a good mother.]
And in some of the cases I quoted above some of the men were indeed married, but the second or subsequent partner were completely unaware that the man was married, such as far example when a married man travels overseas to university, and while there starts a relationship and begets a child. Then abandons that second woman and his child. Such is a case I know of where a married Anglican priest begat a child while he was at university in another island, and when the child was 15 months he disappeared back to Barbados, and into the bosom of the Anglican church, where he still “ministers” and never saw the child again. The child grew up to be so traumatised by this abandonment that the now middle aged “child” is a professed atheist, because this is what my father the priest dd to me.
Do you really believe that he is the only bad behaved pastor/priest in the world?

And Hal you know very well that in the CCJ case referenced the court was ruling on a case of a DEAD childless man who had long been divorced long before his death, and who had subsequently entered into a relationship with another woman, and had lived with her for many years.. The court’s ruling had NOTHING to do with children. It had nothing to do with the man’s long divorced exwife. The man’s ADULT siblings had contested the right of his partner to a share of his estate.
The CCJ ruled against the dead man’s siblings.
The CCJ was right.

In Barbados father absence is the BIG, BIG elephant standing right there right in the middle of the room.
We don’t want to talk about it because it makes us feel real, real uncomfortable.
These absent fathers are not all young unemployed or under employed men, some are old men with children, and now grandchildren whom they have never noticed. Some of them are exceedingly well educated men (even if by rote, lol), some earn big, big salaries, some are well respected in the community, some have never married anybody, and there is no just cause or impediment why they could not have married the mother of their child/children. Some are serial marriers, and serial abandoners.
Some are in academia.
Some are in the church.
Some have sat in Cabinet.
Some no doubt are among those 31 unclaimed bodies at the QEH. Unclaimed for for up to a year, as reported in the most recent Sunday Sun. I would bet anything that the majority of those 31 bodies are male.
None of those bodies are my grandfather, my father, my brother, my husband, my son, my grandson.

Jeff did not prove anything. Jeff referenced the Singapore position, but that is regarding the child of an unmarried couple. (A divorce is not the same as an unmarried couple).
Assets accumulated by an unmarred couple during the cohabitation is righty divided fairly if the couple separate or one sadly dies in most jurisdictions; but all the assets of a marred partner becomes the property of the surviving partner under English common law. This is not the same.(Unless it is a CCJ judgement).
As to unmarried couples, the reality is that children do better when brought up in a two-parent household, or in a household with a step parent. This is universally acknowledged. The blame is not just so-called absent fathers, promiscuous mothers are equally to blame. It takes two to make a child.
What we want to know is the social backgrounds of those involved in criminality, their home circumstances, level of education, job status, etc..
Look at the breakdown of the family, not just with some fathers not having access to their children, but I have seen it mentioned on BU that some parents refuse to attend parent/teachers meetings to discuss their children’s performance at school. Or look at the 30 unburied bodies in the hospital morgue because uncaring relatives refuse to claim the bodies. That is barbarism.
As for the church, the society has lost its moral mooring and the church is left like a rabbit trapped in oncoming lights. We have had another blogger on BU, only this week, referencing walking in Barbados with their partners and grown up waifs and strays whistling at them.
Or during the general election campaign that buffoon Kerrie Symmonds talking on a public platform of people horning rivals. How despicable. Only in Barbados would such a person be elevated to being a minister.
To return to the substantive issue: there is nothing called a common law marriage; get married or suffer the consequences (or take your case to the CCJ).

It may surprise you to know that i am as much a believer/supporter of FAITHFUL lifelong marriage as you are.
But whatever a parent’s fault, the state should use its power to ensure that the children are supported.
But sadly no state in the world is so powerful that it can command love.
And some of our young people are suffering from the lack of money, true, but moreso from the lack of love.
I am a big believer that love is a big deal, that love is redemptive, that love is transformative.
Love God. Love your neighbour. What is so hard about that? Even if your neighbour is the child of your own body?

Another piece was that which said if you live in a house , in a common law relationship for more than five years, she was to have the same privileges, as a wife, if the union collapsed.

We are talking about fathers who have perfectly good access to their children, but who CHOOSE not to acknowledge their children, not to look out for them, not to socialise with them, not to take them to church or to visit their grandparents. Fathers who CHOOSE to have little or nothing to do with their children.
Fathers who effectively ABANDON their own biological children, the fruit of their loins.

No. I am sure you have experienced this too, of people who want children with all their partners/lovers: men with four children from four different women, and women with four children from four different men. That, I suggest, is not just carelessness, it is promiscuity.
@William, I have suggested previously, and repeat, that when mothers go to register the births of their children if they refuse to name the fathers then they cannot claim support for that child. If they name fathers and the fathers deny responsibility, then the courts could order DNA tests, and if positive, order the fathers to support their children. No child should be registered without two parents.
Poverty does not equate with amorality.
