The Queen Elizabeth Hospital has just gotten rid of an infection of MRSA S.aureus. Getting rid of the infection would have cost a tidy sum of money.
I have attached an article from the Daily Mail, UK. The article deals with  returning Muslim pilgrims from Saudi Arabia who have contracted the deadly disease MERS. It has been reported that some Barbadians have gone to Saudi Arabia on  pilgrimage. As a microbiologist all I will say is that Barbados has to be very vigilant about allowing people  from Nigeria and Pakistan and other countries. where polio and TB continue to pose problems into its territory. Dealing with MERS is going to be in some aspects similar to handling Ebola. At this point in time,I do not think Barbados is any position to deal with additional problems.
Extract from the Mail UK article:

Patient is Diagnosed with Killer MERS Virus Leeds

A patient from the Middle East is being treated for the killer MERS virus in England, health officials have today confirmed.

Public Health England said the unidentified patient was diagnosed at a hospital in Leeds, before being moved to a specialist centre in Liverpool.

The Government-run body is now scrambling to contact passengers who were on the same plane from Saudi Arabia to Manchester as the patient, amid fears they may also be infected.

MERS, caused by the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome coronavirus, kills a third of those it strikes. It is considered one of the 10 most urgent threats to humanity by the World Health Organization, as it has no cure.

  1. The Daily Mail=sensational.

  2. Dr. Lucas may not know but over the years hundreds of Barbadian nurses have worked in Saudi Arabia, some spending decades there. Most of them are not Muslim. And over these decades they have moved freely between the U.K., Saudi Arabia and Barbados.

So why associate MERS with Islam and the Haj?

A Christian Bajan nurse can just as easily transmit disease, since pathogens know no nationality, nor religion.

  3. And a single patient can hardly be called an outbreak.

  4. @Simple Simon

    Did you read the article?

  5. Maybe I should’t but I read the Daily Mail everyday. Lolll!!! I read Dr. Lucas’ article too.

One swallow does not a summer make.

Once incidence of MERS is NOT an outbreak.

It is not only Haj pilgrims who can bring diseases into Barbados.

Human beings are migratory. HUMAN BEINGS travel, people, pilgrims, politicians, the people we call tourists. their diseases travel with them. Diplomats tavel up and down the world everyday. Do we ask them where they have been? And what they may have caught while they were there?

When a disease occurs. Deal with it promptly.

  6. I don’t know why Dr. Lucas would worry about “Barbados has to be very vigilant about allowing people from Nigeria and Pakistan and other countries. where polio and TB” since virtually all Barbadians have been immunised against both TB and polio. Polio can’t spread in an immunised population. As for TB that has always existed and still exists in the places from which we draw most of our tourists. A relative of mine spent more that 30 year doing directly observed TB treatment in a first world country, a country very popular with Bajans. And visited Barbados very frequently during those years.

What we should worry about is nutty people who take medical advice from TV celebrities and may refuse to immunise their children.

  7. More “enrichment “ visited on the poor Brits by the Muslim invasion.

  8. The following comment was received from Dr. Lucas, commenters like Simple Simon should take note:

    To the Editor,
It was only within the last five years or so that MERS appeared in Saudi Arabia. So it is disingenuous to talk about how many years Barbadians and others have been going to Saudi Arabia. One blogger referred to the fact that only one person so far had contracted the disease. The blogger seems to disregard epidemiology. All persons who have had contact with the ill person have to be checked out and tests have to be done to exclude the presence of MERS. People who have been in contact with the infected person, may also be infected and can spread the illness to those with whom they come into contact and therefore, have to be isolated. Is Barbados routinely screening for MERS? As regards TB, it is tedious to treat and there are signs of increasing resistance to antibiotics. As for Polio,in some parts of the world health workers have been slaughtered when attempting a vaccine program:the claim being made that program is a western plot to kill people.

    Sincerely
    Robert D. Lucas, Ph.D.

Are you capable of lifting the content of your comment besides the predictable racist ‘drivel’?

  10. Don’t be stupid David, islam is not a race, it is a mental disease, and delivers terror, misogyny, anti-semitism, and stone age values world wide.. It means SUBMISSION – and that is what it has in mind for Christians. Shouting ‘racist’ at anyone who reminds us of the facts is puerile, and just what they want.

  11. You may have the last word.

  12. Simple Simon,

Why do you read the Daily Mail every day?

  13. Sometimes (often?), Simple Simon finds it necessary to remind us why she choose her pseudonym.

There is a place for the kind of thinking that optimistically presumes that everything will always continue as it has in the past… but that place is not in national leadership.

The joke is … when an outbreak occurs, she will be the first (and most persistent) blogger citing what we SHOULD have done to prevent it, and to protect the poor innocent ones that she is always so concerned about.

That is precisely the reason why an early bell of preventative warning ought to be rung.
There is No immunization (as yet) against the MERS virus.

Isn’t the Hajj pilgrimage the perfect gathering for the virus to replicate and spread like the influenza bug? But instead of stoning the ‘devil’ some of those pilgrims might just find themselves a few feet under living permanently in Jahannam.

What do you expect when thousands of ‘non-immunized’ people from around the planet assembled in the house where the MERS virus exists with antibiotic impunity?

Don’t you think that these easy targets would make opportunistically unwitting hosts to carry the virus to other climes?

What do you think ‘done in’ (decimated) the indigenous populations of the Caribbean? Only the white man’s muskets and enforced hard labour to commercialize tobacco and to mine for gold and silver for the Spaniards?

It would be interesting to find out if you would adopt a similar stance on ‘any Bajan(s)
returning from a country where there was an outbreak of Ebola.

“Don’t be stupid David, islam is not a race, it is a mental disease, and delivers terror, misogyny, anti-semitism, and stone age values world wide.. “

Islam sounds like an identical brother in the triplet allegedly fathered by Abraham at the ripe old age of 100.

Don’t all three ‘brotherly’ religions of the Abrahamic faith subscribe to the same dogma which is enshrined in the good old morality rule book of Leviticus?

Look at what your go(o)d old anthropomorphised Zeus posing as Yahweh aka Allah instructed the poor man Moses (your favourite man of god) to do to ‘foreigners’ and innocent children:

    God commanding Moses to kill:
“They fought against Midian, as the LORD commanded Moses, and killed every man……..Now kill all the boys [innocent kids]. And kill every woman who has slept with a man, but save for yourselves every girl who has never slept with a man.” (Numbers 31:7,17-18).

Kill everything that“breathes” from humans and animals! Deuteronomy 20:16.

  16. Miller – good whataboutery. Just one question for you my scholarly chum – how worried would you be by the possibility of being blown to bits by a Jew or a Christian, as opposed to, say, a member of the religion of pieces?

The same odds as placing a bet on surviving on a slave ship called the “Jesus Reincarnated” and owned by a Jewish financier and captained by an Englishman named John Newton sailing the Atlantic from the ‘gold coast of Africa to Jamaica 350 years ago with a cargo of black ‘machines’ for the sugarcane plantations.

  18. @ Miller – 350 years ago? WTF are you dribbling about? Get over yourself.

You also need to get over the defeat from the Xtian Crusades.

There is no difference in the moral ideals of Islam and Christianity both of which were born out of Judaism a desert cult.

It is the corrupting influence of money lovers and power-hungry men and women who have debased the good in religion. Just look at what has befallen the ‘holy RC Church or the evangelical dollar pastors of America who motivate blacks to give Jesus greenbacks!

No different to what the same Jews, allegedly, did to Jesus.

BTW, the miller is a Zoroastrian a religion which existed two and millennia before your Xtian copycats.

  20. @ Miller
A Zoroastrian named ‘Anunnaki’ and blogging political shiite on BU….?
Don’t you need some kinda therapy….?
    LOL
    ha ha ha

  23. Obviously the Simple Simon was giving examples of inductive reasoning. ” Since bajans nurses went to Saudi Arabia and returned with no medical issues, therefore…” Sometimes coming out swinging works, other times logic and sound reasoning will prevail. As Mr. Bush Tea intimated, your pseudonym maybe the clue. lol

  24. @Lucas “As for Polio,in some parts of the world health workers have been slaughtered when attempting a vaccine program:the claim being made that program is a western plot to kill people.”

And what has this got to do with Barbados?

Has a health worker ever been slaughtered in Barbados? Yes. But only female nurses by their male husbands or boyfriends.

What is the likelihood of a health worker being slaughtered in Barbados by patients or prospective patients?

  25. @whiteHill August 26, 20187:46 PM “Obviously the Simple Simon…As Mr. Bush Tea intimated, your pseudonym maybe the clue. lol”

I may be a Simple Simon, but I doubt very much that Dr. Jenny Harries, deputy medical director at Public Health England is. And if I have to take medical advice from Bush Tea or whitehill, and Dr. Jenniy Harries, I choose Dr. Harries. Here is what she said”

“Only passengers who sat on the three rows in front and behind the patient will be contacted because aircraft recycle and filter the air in the cabin, Public Health England (PHE) said. Dr Jenny Harries, deputy medical director at PHE, said: ‘A patient in hospital in Liverpool is being treated for MERS…
‘It is important to emphasise that although a case has been identified, THE OVERALL RISK OF DISEASE TRANSMISSION TO THE PUBLIC IS VERY LOW”

  26. @45govt August 25, 2018 6:26 AM “Don’t be stupid David, islam is not a race, it is a mental disease, and delivers terror, misogyny, anti-semitism.”

And Christianity has no history of misogyny and anti-semitism?

  27. @Hal Austin August 25, 2018 7:02 AM “Simple Simon, Why do you read the Daily Mail every day?

I read half a dozen or more newspapers everyday. The Daily Mail is one of them. Honestly I read the Daily Mail for their sensational headlines, and for the comments from the crazy readers. In addition, unlike some other newspapers the Daily Mail has no firewall. I like freebies. Don’t we all? In addition after many, many decades of good hard work, I now have plenty of time on my hands.

  28. With so much time on your hands, maybe you should come spend some time with me; name your pie, I have them all. I kinda like apple pie with vanilla ice cream. What do you say Simple!

  29. Only of both the apple pie, and the ice cream are homemade/handmade.

  30. @45govt August 25, 2018 6:26 AM “Don’t be stupid David, islam is not a race, it is a mental disease, and delivers terror, misogyny, anti-semitism.”

And didn’t European Christians terrorise Africans for hundreds of years? Do you think that the teenaged African children who were separated from parents, grandparents, siblings, place, religion nd language and forced across the Atlantic, then subsequently abused, raped and overworked. Don’t you think that they were terrified?

Terrorism did not start on September 11, 2001.

  31. @Bush Tea August 26, 2018 8:32 AM “blogging political shiite on BU…? Don’t you need some kinda therapy?

Can you think of better therapy than BU?

    I can’t.

  32. 41,000 (yes forty one thousand) cases of measles in Europe in the past few months. Europe one of our important tourism markets. 37 deaths.

But i am not worried because I know that virtually every Bajan my age has had measles, since it is so infectious, and virtually all other people have been immunised against measles.
