[Barbados Underground] It is unfortunate that Barbadians and what is suppose to be a cricket loving region has not felt the urge to stridently protest a decision by the UK government to deport Collis King. There is no need to detail the cricket bio of the 67 year old all-rounder. His crime: he applied for a visa to live with his British wife while resident in Britain, this type of visa must be requested while residing outside of the country. From all reports Collis King has been living and working in the UK for the last 40 years.

Caribbean Life Newspaper, July 29 – August 2, 2018

The captioned article refers to an offer by Colin Graves, chairman of the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) to ‘assist’ Collis King in his immigration ‘matter’.   The blogmaster unhesitatingly adds his tuppence to the discussion by calling for the UK government to do the right thing and at this late stage extend all courtesy to Mr. Collis King- a famous cricket who has lived in that country for decades. The manner which he has been treated so far not least the confiscation of his passport at the airport as he was ibeing deported to Barbados.

Shame!

The blogmaster will resist pulling the race card. However, how can anybody explain why the UK foreign office (government) would not have felt compelled to intervene? The UK is a cricket playing nation – creator of the cricket game – surely there was time to halt the deportation action when the name Collis King was whispered to someone at King Charles Street?

The pride of a great West Indian warrior has been forever harmed, however, there is still the opportunity for the UK government to deliver ‘satisfaction’ to King with the urgency the matter deserves!

Many will remember Collis King for the innings he played in the 1979 World Cup final in a partnership with Viv Richards.

The blogmaster makes special mention of Heather Cole for bringing this matter to the fore.

  1. “The blogmaster will resist pulling the race card.”

    You just did Sir.

This has nothing to do with race, but incompetence, and if you had followed the moronic workings of the UK immigration service for five minutes you would know this. The Home Office, catastrophically ‘led’ by that mistress of uselessness Appeaser May before she was promoted to further destruction is well known for inexplicable ‘reasoning’, whereby a Senegalese can walk through the Channel Tunnel and get immmediate benefits and residence, but both black and white or polka-dot Commonwealth citizens of impeccable background and benefit to the UK are routinely turned away.

What you may NOT know, as for all the usual reasons used for protecting the “Religion of Peace”, is that a gang of muslim lawyers (surprise, surprise) including immigration officials have been charged with corruption in office. Now who do you think they have been letting in, and who not?

  2. When examining issues arising from that part of the world it is a challenge to unpack the spectre of how race influences everything?

    That said, we are observing!

  4. What are the facts of the Collis King case?

  5. It is unfortunate that the elderly [not relatively young] Collis is separated from his wife, since a loving caring spouse is one of the blessings of old age. I think that in this case the British government is being unduly HARSH & LEGALISTIC.

That said “visa paperwork” can be boring and tedious as hell. People sometimes hire lawyers or immigration consultants to ease them through the process, but often an individual who is comfortable with paperwork can do the process themselves. Visa work is step by step, and the applicant needs to have a copy of the rules on hand, and a highlighter, and check the boxes and write the statements one by one until finished, then submit the thing in the manner demanded, mail, online, registered mail whatever.

I’ve done this pro bono–althought i ain’t no lawyer–for a number of people over the years including in one case the consular official of a first world country reviewed my paperwork, but refused to make a decision.

I complained to his supervisors for him in writing.

    Permanent residence granted.

What he didn’t know was that I knew the rules better than he did and that I am a person who follows rules to the letter, to the comma, to the fullstop.

  6. Collis King did not arrive on the Windrush but he was given a “bum-rush” out of Britain.

Immigration offices in the UK are no longer necessarily manned by caucasians. You would be surprised to see the racial composition the highest ranks of management in public offices in Britain. This could be a matter of national prejudice or “cricket team prejudice”! Why become fixated on the race card?

  9. David Mr Blogmaster, for all practical purposes this matter falls more squarely into the thrust from @45Govt of govermental process with a tinge of incompetence than anything else.

As asked by @Hal one does need to get behind the facts of this immigration case but certainly on its face it does appear that Collis did as he was supposed to do over the many years of his contracted work in England and returned home to Bim as his ‘visa’ stipulated…. he should really have no problems acceding or meeting the conditions to satisfy permanent legal residence in that country….unless there is something lurking to derail his application.

He has well respected benefactors providing legal and persuasive support and should certainly be also able to support himself financially as needed.

It is the non prominent folks who find themselves in these predicaments and worst who often need the public support; I expect he will win handsomely as he did in ’79. Good luck to the Kingdom man.

  10. If you know the facts and care to enlighten then please proceed.

Really @Hal…you are NOT the only adult on the blog…but at times you do appear to be the most petulant school age blogger 😁.

  11. “This has nothing to do with race, but incompetence”

Race and Racism is integral to the case such as very existence of blacks in Caribbean and rights of residency in UK

In this instance Collis King has an English Wife and has been living in UK for 40 years and is only attempting to normalise his residency status

The HO hostile environment that led to Windrush was possibly implemented after Caricom asked Cameron for reparations

  12. What are the facts of the case?

  13. SSDumbShit – is there ANYTHING you can comprehend without injecting race into it? Race and racism is NOT integral to the case. In fact the immigration staff in the UK are predominantly BME. Go away and learn something before attempting to interact with grown-ups.

  15. How can there be a problem if Collis is married to a British citizen? After cursory research a man of his stature should have been rubber stamped years ago, unless there is a valid reason.

When certain people reach high office they will discriminate an example is the Cnd Cricket team where they are virtually no black gents represented. Is this legit in terms of performance and ability?

  16. I am sure Mr King has a legitimate case, but what are the facts?

  17. @Moneybrain

Yes it is so simple. It was written here and everywhere else covering the story that based on a technicality of King submitting his application while living in the UK it triggered the deportation action. If we have others on the blog that can challenge what has been reported then do so or shut up.

  22. It was written here and everywhere else covering the story that based on a technicality of King submitting his application while living in the UK it triggered the deportation action.

    +++++++++++++++++++++

This technicality … it isn’t by any chance the law of the land?

Maybe he has been sent back to apply through the British High Commission and go through the process of following the law of the land in which he desires to live.

  23. If he waited until he was living in the UK to apply for a visa to legalise his presence, doesn’t that suggest that he recognizes that his presence without a visa broke the law of the land?

  24. Technicality?????

  25. 45Govt “Race and racism is NOT integral to the case. In fact the immigration staff in the UK are predominantly BME.”

UK Home Office policy to deport is racist, as a white troll you are racist disgruntled and bitter boy and not a grown up.

BAME immigration staff are front line staff not decision makers (legal term) or policy makers, top management are responsible for incorrect decisions as they sign them off.

  26. Is Guy Hewitt home secretary?

  27. @John

Understand the blogmaster’s concern. Collis King is a legend. This is a son of the soil who for whatever reason was kicked out of a country he has been living and working for 44 years. Even if he offended an immigration rule we know deviations can be approved at the stroke of the pen of the minister.

  28. I have always been an admirer of Mr Collis King both as a gentleman and cricketer. However, his furore his alleged deportation from Britain is quite misplaced. The procedures relating to his particular case are clear and he should not attempt to lull the public into believing that his was a case of discriminatory action by the British Government.Applications for spousal rights must be made when the applicant is out of the country. The Barbados High Commissioner ought to have checked the facts and advised Mr King before getting publicly involved.

  29. @Charles Skeete,

Thank you. This is not in any way to disrespect Mr King. What does him no favours is the mass hysteria.

  30. RE Even if he offended an immigration rule we know deviations can be approved at the stroke of the pen of the minister.

WHY SHOULD HE OFFEND AN IMMIGRATION RULE IN A FOREIGN COUNTRY?

WHY SHOULD ANYONE BREAK THE LAW AND EXPECT A MINISTER TO APPROVE SUCH AN INFRACTION BY THE PEN OF A MINISTER……….JUST BECAUSE HE IS A CRICKET LEGEND?

BEN STOKES GOT IN A FIGHT LAST YEAR IN HIS COUNTRY AND WAS NOT ALLOWED TO PLAY CRICKET FOR ENGLAND UNTIL IT WAS ASCERTAINED THAT HE DID NOT BREAK HIS COUNTRY’S LAW.

WHEN EVER I HAVE LIVED ABROAD I HAVE MADE IT THE HABIT TO ABIDE BY THE COUNTRIES IMMIGRATION LAWS.

  31. “Applications for spousal rights must be made when the applicant is out of the country. The Barbados High Commissioner ought to have checked the facts and advised Mr King before getting publicly involved.”

    Charles Skeete

I agree with your above comment.

I know if two individuals who are currently living in the UK that had to go through a similar process.

One guy was lucky that while he was filing for spousal rights, his wife rented an apartment for him when he returned to Barbados, while undergoing the process.

  32. Laws are abused. UK Government has been accused of Jim Crowing valid applicants such as asking for paperwork from 1971.
In old days anyone in country could apply for British citizenship after 7 years. Nowadays they only give Residency Visas.
They refuse to renew Residency Visas at will. Abromovich was welcomed into UK for his billions but was refused a renewal visa application, he circumvented issue by getting Israeli citizenship which allows him to enter UK without a visa.

  33. @Hal Austin

It is not a matter of “what are the facts” but a matter of “what is the truth.”

  34. I can assure you that when my sister married an American she had to return to Bim for a month or so in order to meet their Immigration laws of that time, 1966. The US should have been suspicious since she got married after meeting about 3-4 months prior. There are loads of games that foreigners play to migrate to Can/ US etc. I remember telling a school principal, 50ish, to be careful of the Cuban girl, 21, rubbing up against him in the Playas del Este of Havana. There are countless stories of people being used for migration.

  35. @Hal

I suspect because he has NO VISA he’s not legally in the country. Making a VISA application several years after the fact, from within the country, raised questions for the immigration department in which they discovered he’s an illegal alien.

Mr. King obviously became aware he’s not entitled to a government pension without citizenship, thus the circumstances he now finds himself. If as stated he’s been a productive quasi citizen during these alien years and has documentation of tax payments then the UK Government should be open to showing some lenancy.

  36. I read this in the Nation. What I would like to hear is the British Immigation Department’s position. From a child I always heard a book has a front back and contents. Unless we can have all the facts we will just be making premature judgements. Are we sure Collis is giving all the information…just asking.

  37. The following extracted from the link above:

Speaking yesterday, Hewitt said King had ‘made a considerable contribution to Barbados and the West Indies’ cricket and also to cricket in the United Kingdom’.

He added: ‘I have asked the Home Office to use their compassion and discretion to give his matter their priority so that it can be resolved and he can be reunited with his wife and community in Yorkshire as quickly as possible.’

  38. What is being asked for is that the UK Office extend courtesy read prioritize the matter in consideration of his contribution and reputation as a cricket legend. The relevant players have the discretion to do so. No prolix necessary.

Reverend Hewitt let this be your final achievement on behalf of Barbadians and cricket lovers everywhere.

  39. I always say do not follow the mob. Mr King is highly respected in Caribbean cricketing circles, but he is not making a visa application to live in the Caribbean. And this nonsense about being a legend.
The BU chairman always disappoints, but never surprises, with his lack of reasoning. To believe that Guy Hewitt could ‘demand’ from the UK immigration authorities that Collis King be given a spousal visa is ridiculous. David should stop his hysteria and think for a moment.
By the way, is David King related to Collis King?

  40. @Wily

Of course there are rules but all reasonable people are aware that there are the exceptions that are approved when circumstances demand that it is prudent to do so.

  41. Do you ever read with comprehension? Even though the relevant extract from the article was posted? All fair minded people everywhere- even the head of the ECB, an Englishman- is asking for the process to be fast tracked given the unique circumstances.

  42. Unique or special? David, please let me assure you, I can read and understand better than you ever will be able to, that is the probem. You just do not understand the real world. You live in your little box.

  43. The blogmaster is thankful we have civic minded Bajans like Guy Hewitt who will go the extra mile to defend the Bajan and West Indian brand. And yes Collis King is unique, he is a WI legend.

  44. Silly man, you cannot ‘demand’ leniency. You ask for, plead for, leniency. He may be a legend to West Indies fans, but he is simply a retired test cricketer.
So, if John Brown from Grazettes marries a young tourist from England and wants to settle in the UK, should the home office or the Bajan high commissioner also plead it is a special case? When does special cases end? Or is it one rule for cricket legends and on for ordinary boys from the block.
Or let us put it another way: three men are held on drug smuggling charges, two are prominent businessmen and one a lowly sailor. Should the two business people be treated more leniently and given bail wile the ordinary guy’s bail is so high that he is remanded, not on grounds of tampering with evidence ore witnesses, but by money. Is that fair in your warped world of reasoning?
In a fair and democratic society, rules apply to apply citizens. Talent or connections does not exclude any of them.

  45. You can engage in semantics, Collis King has done enough to expect discretion. You may have the last word you buffoon.

  46. Anderson Banks Avatar

What are the facts of the case?

Has Mr. King (“Collis King has been living and working in the UK for the last 40 years“) been paying taxes and NI contributions in the UK for the past four decades? If so, why didn’t the British tax authorities advise him to stop paying tax, given that he had no legal standing even to remain in the country, much less give money to it?

Whatever the case, in which parallel universe is his status as a “cricket legend” even minimally significant?

  47. Do you know what discretion means? Discretion is not the same as special treatment or leniency. By the way, what does semantics mean?

you cannot ‘demand’ leniency. You ask for, plead for, leniency. He may be a legend to West Indies fans, but he is simply a retired test cricketer.

    GOOD QUESTION MR BANKS
in which parallel universe is his status as a “cricket legend” even minimally significant?

    BUT PLEASE UNDERSTAND
Collis King has done enough to expect discretion CAUSE THE HIGH LORD AT BU SAYS SO
TO HAVE ANOTHER VIEW MAKES YOU A BUFFOON

MR KING MUST NOT UNDERGO DUE PROCESS AND APPLY IN THE CORRECT WAY AND WAIT ON THE DISCRETION OF THE UK AUTHORITIES. AFTER ALL HE IS ” the Bajan and West Indian brand. And is unique, AND A WI legend.

DELUSIONS OF GRANDEUR WOULD BE THE DIAGNOSIS I WOULD EXPECT A MEDICAL STUDENT TO GIVE IF POSED WITH SUCH A STUPID INCOHERENT ARGUMENT
