[Barbados Underground] It is unfortunate that Barbadians and what is suppose to be a cricket loving region has not felt the urge to stridently protest a decision by the UK government to deport Collis King. There is no need to detail the cricket bio of the 67 year old all-rounder. His crime: he applied for a visa to live with his British wife while resident in Britain, this type of visa must be requested while residing outside of the country. From all reports Collis King has been living and working in the UK for the last 40 years.

 

Caribbean Life Newspaper, July 29 – August 2, 2018

The captioned article refers to an offer by Colin Graves, chairman of the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) to ‘assist’ Collis King in his immigration ‘matter’.   The blogmaster unhesitatingly adds his tuppence to the discussion by calling for the UK government to do the right thing and at this late stage extend all courtesy to Mr. Collis King- a famous cricket who has lived in that country for decades. The manner which he has been treated so far not least the confiscation of his passport at the airport as he was ibeing deported to Barbados.

Shame!

The blogmaster will resist pulling the race card. However, how can anybody explain why the UK foreign office (government) would not have felt compelled to intervene? The UK is a cricket playing nation – creator of the cricket game – surely there was time to halt the deportation action when the name Collis King was whispered to someone at King Charles Street?

The pride of a great West Indian warrior has been forever harmed, however, there is still the opportunity for the UK government to deliver ‘satisfaction’ to King with the urgency the matter deserves!

Many will remember Collis King for the innings he played in the 1979 World Cup final in a partnership with Viv Richards.

The blogmaster makes special mention of Heather Cole for bringing this matter to the fore.

    Someone here made out that Mr.. King is only after a British pension. If the man has been working in the U.K. off and on for more that 40 years surely his employers have paid in his U.K. NIS pension contributions on his behalf, and if not why not? Somebody should ask them hard questions. And if the U.K pension contributions havve been made on his behalf why should he not be ENTITLED to a U.K pension, and if he has made contributions to Barbados’ NIS he should be entitled to his Barbados NIS pension too. Why we looking to make the man out to be a mendicant when more that likely he has worked hard in sun, sun, hail, and rain for more than 40 years.

    What more do we want of him?

    His blood?

    His very bones?

    Pay the man his pensions do. And for God’s sake let him back into the country where he has spent virtually his entire adult life, so that he and his old wife can enjoy each others company for the few years that they have left.

    What is so hard about that?

    I ask again, will Meaghan Markle be made to separate from her British husband which her immigration application is processed. Or is forcible separation from spouse only imposed on working class black people I don’t trust the British any farther than I can throw a big rock at them.? We know that the British have a long and nasty history of separating people from their families? Ah lie?

    And another question, has Ms. Markle ever paid any taxes in the U.K?

    Has she ever shed one drop of sweat in the U.K.?

    Yup!!

    Only two European Nations currently offer reparations by way of citizenship to descendants of Sephardic Jews and Muslims who they expelled.

    One is Portugal and the other is Spain.

    I can claim reparations from either … or both.

    One grandmother has Sephardic ancestry from Spain and the other Sephardic ancestry from Portugal.

    Only one thing stopping me claiming my reparations, I really don’t want to live in Portugal or Spain … or Europe.

    I don’t think the African chiefs who sold my African ancestors into slavery harmed them in any way, to the contrary, by putting them in the consignment for the Caribbean they actually gave then life … and the males got to keep all of their manly parts without which I would not be here.

    So what if those old dead chiefs got a few trinkets or a gun from somebody, they are dead and gone.

    I wouldn’t be around were it not for the kind considerate acts of those African Chiefs … kind of like Schindler’s list!!

    Besides ancestors from England who also sealed the deal and gave me my life, what I got from England was access to the Gospel.

    My ancestors who were not already Christian chose to hear and believe the Word.

    So here I am, alive, happy and for the moment healthy!!

    I rejoice in the existence of all of my ancestors.

    What could anyone give me, white, black or blue that would improve my lot?

    I don’t want anything from long dead people …. in fact, after much thought and all my education and experience in life I have figured out that it is impossible to collect anything from them!!

    No doubt she will then take steps to regularize her status, if she hasn’t done so already.

    Simple Simon, despite being a mock doctor of everything under the sun like the many pantomaths on BU, you can find yourself, occasionally, being too ‘smart for your commonsense good and intellectual wellbeing’.

    What’s the difference in immigration status between Collis and Meaghan?

    It clearly cannot be race! For Meaghan cannot suddenly be ‘half-White’ while King continues to be royal black?

    Why isn’t Ms Markle being treated like a black modern day Wallis Simpson endowed with a clutching Venus flytrap of a hole to entrap overly horny royal male bees?

    Wasn’t Mr. King born before 1966 when Barbado(e)s was a self-sustaining colony of Britain which should have automatically made him a British subject?

    Why didn’t the negotiators of the Independence Order and Act along with the framers of the Barbados Constitution insist that all people born in Barbados prior to 1966 be entitled to full British citizenship until death do them part as a settlement in respect of the separation or divorce?

    Where is the quid pro quo as a show of reparations for over 200 years of brutal chattel slavery that should have been spelt out clearly in the following Separations (Independence) Constitutional provisions:

    “CHAPTER II CITIZENSHIP:

    (1) Every person who, having been born in Barbados, is on
    29th November, 1966 a citizen of the United Kingdom and Colonies
    shall become a citizen of Barbados on 30th November, 1966.

    (2) Every person who, having been born outside Barbados, is
    on 29th November, 1966 a citizen of the United Kingdom and
    Colonies shall, if his father becomes or would but for his death have
    become a citizen of Barbados in accordance with the provisions of
    subsection (1), become a citizen of Barbados on 30th November, 1966.

    (3) Any person who on 29th November 1966 is a citizen of the
    United Kingdom and Colonies,
    (a) having become such a citizen under the British Nationality Act
    1948 by virtue of his having been naturalised in Barbados as a
    British subject before that Act came into force; or
    (b) having become such a citizen by virtue of his having been
    naturalised or registered in Barbados under that Act,
    shall become a citizen of Barbados on 30th November 1966.”

    I firmly of the view that persons born in the United kingdom and colonies in the Caribbean before their countries became independent were cheated out of their right to enter and leave the UK freely and the right to a British passport to which they were entitled before their countries be amended independent
    Perhaps as you say it could have been out of the ignorance of those negotiating independence but the screws were tightened with the introduction of legislation by Mrs Thatcher which did not apply to the white colonies.
