Johnson and Johnson, the American company that manufactures Johnson & Johnson Baby Powder — a product that is sold in Barbados and used extensively by Barbadian women and children — has been hit with a US $4.69 Billion judgment in a law suit in which 22 women (and their families) claimed that asbestos in the company’s talcum powder products caused them to develop ovarian cancer.

According to the New York Times newspaper, the judgment — comprising US $4.14 Billion in punitive damages and US $550 Million in compensatory damages — was handed down by a Jury in the Missouri Circuit Court on Thursday 12th July 2018.

The 22 female Plaintiffs had specifically accused the company of failing to warn them about cancer risks associated with its baby and body powders.

The New York Times article also revealed that the company is facing some 9,000 other Plaintiffs in a number of law suits across the United States !

The question that arises for us in Barbados is : Who is informing the women and children of Barbados about these developments and looking out for their interests?

And since we know that many many Barbadian women and children literally lather themselves with Johnson & Johnson Baby Powder, we need to inquire whether any Barbadian females might have developed ovarian cancer from use of this product.  And, if this is the case, we then need to determine what can be done to ensure that they receive the financial compensation that would be due to them.

If there are Barbadian victims, who will assist them to mount a similar class action law suit against this American multi-national corporation?

Way back in 1981, the Government of  Barbados established an agency known as the Barbados National Standards Institution (BNSI) to maintain proper consumer product standards in our country and to protect our people in matters of this nature.

In addition, in 2003 our Government enacted a Consumer Protection Act and gave the relevant government Minister  the power (after consulting with the BNSI) to make regulations for the purpose of protecting Barbadian consumers from such defective and health-destroying products.

Thus, we Barbadian people are entitled to ask why we have not heard from our BNSI on this matter up to now.

Surely, the Court case in Missouri must have been based on credible scientific evidence and must have been going on for some considerable time before last Thursday’s verdict. In this age of Information Technology, does the BNSI or any other local regulatory agency monitor these types of developments internationally? And if so, why have they not alerted the Barbadian people to the cancer causing danger associated with this very popular product ?

And — most importantly — when is this product going to be banned from Barbados?

Johnson & Johnson baby powder recalled over possible asbestos contamination

Johnson & Johson has initiated a recall of one of its most ubiquitous products because there’s a small chance it might contain asbestos. In a new bulletin, the company reveals that a single lot of its baby powder returned a positive result for “sub-trave levels” of chrysotile asbestos in a recent test by the Food and Drug Administration.

The talc-based powder is extremely popular and the discovery made by the FDA is obviously a bit concerning, but the company insists that the recall is being conducted “out of an abundance of caution.” The recall affects a single lot with Lot #22318RB.

The levels of asbestos detected by the FDA were very, very low, but this small-scale recall doesn’t really tell the whole story. Johnson & Johnson has come under fire in recent years for ignoring possible signs of asbestos contamination in its products. Earlier this year, a jury sided with a woman who claimed J&J baby powder gave her cancer, awarding her a $29 million verdict.

That case was just one of many the company has faced over the years over talc-related asbestos. In total, over 10,000 lawsuits have been filed against Johson & Johnson, all attempting to link the talc powder to asbestos and cancer.

In its recall bulletin, the company already appears a bit defensive, claiming that they can’t confirm whether the results by the FDA were a “false positive” or if the product tested was counterfeit or authentic.

“Our talc comes from ore sources confirmed to meet our stringent specifications that exceed industry standards,” the statement reads. “Not only do we and our suppliers routinely test to ensure our talc does not contain asbestos, our talc has also been tested and confirmed to be asbestos-free by a range of independent laboratories, universities and global health authorities.”

All of this aside, if you have a bottle of Johnson & Johnson baby powder from lot #22318RB, don’t use it. You can contact the company for information on how to participate in the recall via its recall announcement page.

With my oldest I didn’t feel bonded at all. Even towards the end of the pregnancy, when he was real and I was talking to him, I was still just pleading with a stranger (I do not have pleasant pregnancies). But then he was born. That’s definitely the origin of the love at first sight phenomenon. I don’t believe it happens with grown people, but with your babe, it’s legit. Even if you love them before they’re out, the magnitude gets turned up to 11 and you instantly love them so much it leaves you literally breathless, gasping for air because even your lungs have filled up with love and devotion and infatuation.

I don’t know sometimes it takes the birth to trigger the love. If it’s because he was my first and I didn’t really understand what was gonna happen, or because I was only 23 and my brain wasn’t done cooking. Whatever it was though. It ultimately didn’t have any effect in the long run.

Of course, this was how it played out for me, and not a guarantee that it’s how it’ll go for you. So to the mama who’s reading this with fear and anxiety because you don’t love your baby yet, whether he’s still cooking or fresh out of the oven, that’s okay. You’ll get there. Even if you have to meet him and get to know him, and fall in love the slow way. There’s nothing wrong with taking your time and savoring the buildup. And finally, perhaps you’ve heard this already, but maybe not, or maybe you need to hear it again. The fact that you’re worried about being a good mom means that you ARE a good mom. Scientific fact. hugbaby gate reviews
