Submitted by Amit the webmaster of Caribbeansignal.com. The submission is timely given the perception in Barbados that violent crime is on the increase. With a general election 20 days away we pray that violence does rear its head to add to the many serious issues confronting the country.

While there are many who would consider some types of my research to be morbid, it needs to be done.  Barbados is a small island (circa 280K or so and only 166 odd sq. Miles). We are also a vulnerable, SOE. While we are by no means a perfect ideal country, violent crime must be kept in check.  We must not be oblivious to it, nor sweep it under the rug and bury our collective heads in the sand. We must seek out the root causes of violent crime and reduce the risk of it occurring. The success and prosperity of our small slice of paradise depends on it.

    There is more violent crimes, rapes and murders per second in the US, UK and Canada than there are in many of the over 50 countries in Africa….it is called urban warfare.

    It issue of crime in Barbados cannot be benchmarked against US or any other developed country. A characteristic of Barbados and the Caribbean is the tranquility for which this region is known.

    Crime in quiet islands like Barbados are among the lowest in the region and the world, cannot even be compared with Trinidad and Jamaica, per square mile.

    The IDB has a detailed report out on crime on the island:



    “EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

    Overall rate of property crime was higher than violent crime between 2009 and 2013
    Rate of property crime fluctuated between 2009 and 2013, reaching its peak in 2012 (1,758 per 100,000 population) and falling to its low in 2013 (1,599)

    o The property crime of greatest concern is residential burglary. In 2013, this was the property crime most commonly reported to the police (562.4 per 100,000 population), representing 35 per cent of all property crimes reported to the police in that year

    Rate of violent crimes was relatively constant between 2009 and 2013, reaching its peak in 2010 (1,033 per 100,000 population) and falling to a low of 929 in 2013

    o The violent crime of greatest concern is assault. In 2013, this was the violent crime most commonly reported to the police (505.5 per 100,000), representing 54 per cent of all crimes against the person reported.

    Homicide
     Barbados, while displaying some fluctuation, has displayed somewhat consistently low rates of homicide.
     Between 2000 and 2013, the rate of homicide reached its high in 2006 (12.7 per 100,000) and a low of 6.8 per 100,000 in 2009.
     The 2013 rate of 8.4 per 100,000 was considerably lower than the average rate of murder for the region.”

    An article was posted here earlier this year about 2017 murder increase. Some made the point that it was still within average rate and lower than some previous years. However others were like, its a cause of concern because the vast majority of deaths in 2017 were by the gun. The majority of deaths so far are not by the gun. This goes to show, that if someone wants to kill, they will kill.

    The increase in murders would not be much more than 1-1.5% to the 2013 peak, much ado about nothing, outside of the grieving families negatively impacted by loss of life.

    some have an agenda to send everyone into panic, they should move to Trinidad or Jamaica if that is what they are looking for…then they will have the numbers they desire.

    Prosecute those who videotape Police? Excuse me???? Agreed, videos may not give the full picture, but to install a draconian and Police-state measure is totally unacceptable.

    The Police are in a public place and it is shocking that a person of the law, would make such a suggestion, as there is no law that supports it.
