Mighty Gabby of Jack fame led a protest at the Crane beach on the 31 March 2018 triggered by the decision of Crane Resort management to restrict vendor access on the beach adjoining their property. His message was crystal clear to Paul Doyle, Butch Stewart and ilk – view video embedded in the blog.

The blogmaster is of the view we can debate the technical issues raised by what is foreshore, high water mark and the like stoking this issue, however, let the word go afar that the Rh beaches in Barbados- every grain of sand- BARBADIANS have right of access.

    It would appear that the battle lines have been drawn. We should all thank the owner of The Crane for having highlighted what most of of us have taken for granted: having free and unfettered access to our beaches.

    Mr Doyle, may have met his match in Gabby. We have finally found a common cause that may unite all citizens of Barbados. Let’s call it for what it is. The creeping privatisation of Barbadian beeches is about to be disrupted and must be dismantled.

    I simply cannot see Bajans standing idly by whilst chunks of their beaches become out of bounds to themselves and their families.

    The DLP/BLP have some important decisions to make concerning this matter. Either they back the hoteliers and those owners of those obscene beachfront properties or they back the people.

    Emotions are running rampant, rational is out the window, everyone’s an expert lawyer and I suspect the GOB will make every effort to sidestep this issue. If GOB makes a decision, no matter what it is will be like committing political suicide.

    Time will tell, MAYBE.

    By the time such a thing happens, if it were to, the beach might be gone and there will be nothing to decide!!

    At that point, if not before, the GOB/IDB will probably be facing legal action by Doyle for the 2002-2009 project to prevent beach erosion on the south coast.

    In reality, it was all about removing the sand from “our” beach … and by “our” I mean all of the stakeholders …. locals, tourists (who outnumber locals by at least 4 to 1), Doyle, Melnyck etc etc.

    Fortunately if you understand where the sand comes from there may be a solution so there is hope but it will cost $$$$!!

    It is interesting to note Doyle says he has been in negotiation with the NCC for 9 years … about when the project ended.

    He would have watched the effects unfold and turned to the GOB for assistance.

    What appears to have happened is that the area where the vendors plied their trade is where the rip occurs and the major beach erosion happened.

    As their section disappeared, thanks to the GOB/IDB, they were forced towards the hotel.

    The Hotel is expanding and if you hear Doyle it needs its space for deck chairs.

    Parasites are a recognized beach issue, perhaps not on the Crane Beach, but the Hotel has as its primary concern the well being of its guests.

    So, we will watch events unfold!!!

    Everyone can’t get along because the beach is disappearing which is the central issue there.

    Gabby & Co. are merely a distraction … a nuisance, … a delay to addressing the real problem which is the disappearing beach.

    Again I agree with you.
    The size of the beach is fundamental. If it waxes and wanes like the moon ,do we need to waste time on law or do the parities need to come to a flexible, sensible arrangement? Law was made by man for man; it therefore needs to be responsive to physical and social conditions.

    The Crane Hotel’s management broke the chains used to secure the vendors’ chairs, confiscated and placed them in a container on the hotel’s property.

    Could some please inform me if

    (1) The method used to confiscate the chairs is not tantamount to stealing or illegal

    (2) If the vendors can sue the Crane for loss of income during the period the chairs were with-held

    Somewhere in the various verbiage I think I saw 150 chairs was the number.

    Look at the photo on the beach and tell me if that number matches what you see in the Vendor’s section!!

    Maybe I misread the verbiage … sorry to nit pick!!

    The beaches are free for everyone, you notice i say everyone. The hotels have no right to hog the beach,push out vendors, and individuals for prime space. the vendors have no right to hog the beaches and push out HOTELIERS, and individuals for prime space. If I want to got to the beach I have the same right as everyone else , and the right not to purchase chairs, or beverages, or SOUVENIRS.

    There should be a simple chair stand where the chairs are sold, and not lined up on the beach. the operator whether hotel or vendor simple rents the chairs to whom ever, and then places them where the customer wants on the beach. So whatever places are free can be occupied by anyone. First come first served….

    The more things change the more they remain the same.

    This has been nearly 40 years since ‘Jack’ has had just cause

    Then it was a BLP government, in similar economic straights, imposing itself on open beach spaces.

    For ‘former’ slaves, never getting land at emancipation, its good to see another push back. There can never be a substitute for a historical and radical land reform.

    It tells us that the forces behind this project to privatize public areas might have been daunted 40 years ago, but not deterred.

    That this time another Jack Dear(s) have the temerity to again approach this issue should tell us that the duopoly merely takes chances of achieving the same outcomes.

    Those outcomes include but are not limited to the privatization of everything.

    The DLP and the BLP are one!

    Dick Tracy (above comment) is 100% correct…….. neither Hotelier nor Vendor should be allowed to place 100’s of unoccupied chairs on the beach ….. preventing the public from enjoying the beach. They should be stacked in a designated area where the ‘customer’ goes, pay the rental fee, then chooses a spot on the beach like all of us!!!

    Agreed, however we have concluded from observation and feedback that the cars represent a demarcation zone. We see it by the Boat Yard, Fort St. Charles and other areas. It is why there is the glamour for rules to be made clear and enforced by the relevant agencies.

    Look at the satellite photo and see where you can fit 150 chairs on the beach …. particularly now beach erosion has diminished its size.

    If you can figure that one out you will also figure out that an arrangement has been reached …. long ago!!

    Doyle says he is increasing room size and wants to increase chairs, read take business away from vendors, not going to happen.

    Let’s hope he got a valid title deed for the land above the beach where his hotel actually stands and not some forged document, both him and Melnyck.

    Organize a staff strike at the Crane and close it down. Then the need for more beach chairs will vanish.

    If the BWU can’t even get it members to ‘walk out’ from the Government’s departments for being told do either like it or lump it and wait another 5 years for any salary increase, do you really feel the Crane workers would put their bread and butter at risk for a cause that has not votes for any of the political contenders in the upcoming race for only Fumble Dee and Mumble Bee?

    Have you heard anything ‘solvable’ from the Solutions Barbados whose dictatorial leader has an ISO 9001 application for every problem facing Barbados? The man and his business-oriented band of opportunists without any social causes know how high to hang their hats and when to know their political place.

    If Bajans- through their own elected government- cannot even get a local redneck whose forex earning capacity is nowhere close to Doyle’s forex generating business to obey the clear-cut law regarding his illegal erection at Coverley and which (could) have contributed to the ‘accidental’ death of a black child, then do you expect any ministerial edict to be issued in regard to the Crane beach apartheid affair?

    Doyle is in a position to call the forex tune so expect this Crane beach uprising to disappear like the sand, before you can shout Jack Robinson on a Bajan bitchy beach.

    Bajans have to come to grips with the stark reality that visitors (mostly white) come to Barbados not because of (as is falsely believed) the ‘friendliness’ of the natives with their ‘exceptional service’ but mainly because of the salubrious warm climate and relatively safe sandy beaches on which a get a ‘free’ tan from the Sky god while lying in the open air so attractively provided by Mother Nature while being spoilt to heaven by their black attendants.

    As a result they must be prepared (like many other competing jurisdictions) to concede their unfettered expectations in using the beaches in exchange for the foreign dollars they need to buy imported processed foods and engage in a lifestyle of flagrant conspicuous consumption of foreign made goods and services like ‘easy’ access to the Internet.

    BTW, we haven’t seen recently your forebodingly prescient advice regarding the fate of the Bajan dollar. These guys (the PM, the MoF and Guv of the CB) with their Mickey mouse dollars in hand are just playing a game of three blind mice about to come in contact, ‘shortly’ with the carving knife engraved with the initials ‘IMF’.
