BIM Sidelined Once Again by the Nation Newspaper and Demands Apology

Reference is drawn to an article of April 1st, 2018 at pages 22A & 23A written by Mr. Barry Alleyne.

Our concerns are the fact that the representative of the Barbados Integrity Movement (BIM) and Candidate Neil Holder has been omitted from any mention in the stated article.

Furthermore, while it is widely known within the constituency that the Candidate Neil Holder which represents BIM is ever present, he is also the political leader of the party!

We find this purposeful omission to be of a political nature and therefore does not hold fast to professional and objective journalism expected in 2018.

Of further concern is the fact that the constituency of St. Michael West starts at Hindsbury Road and proceeds onto Roebuck Street, Country Road, Passage Road, Westbury Road, President kennedy Drive, Spring Garden, Deacons Road, Goodland Main Road, Bridge Gap, Black Rock, Eagle Hall, Bank Hall Main Road, Sobers Junction onto Hindsbury once more. This means that the sample of the constituency taken by the said journalist Mr, Barry Alleyne has been confined to less than 1/4 of the constituency.

In this regard, it appears very inconsistent with what may be deemed as best practices for adequate and objective journalism for future election coverage. Much is left to be considered!!!

The fact remains that earlier this year the Nation Newspaper also carried an article which referred to the Political Parties that will contest the 2018 General Election where the same Journalist again omitted to mention the Barbados Integrity Movement. However in that article, the said journalist made reference to the Candidate for St. Peter as the representative of the New Barbados Kingdom Alliance (NBKA) even after a public announcement that Apostle. Lynroy Scantlebury had merged the NBKA with the BIM to be recognised as the BIM for all future intents and purposes!

We find this behaviour to be grossly erroneous and disingenuous by nature and therefore devoid of INTEGRITY!

We are therefore demanding a public apology from the Nation Newspaper in this regard.

    You at e right. It is not good journalism. However, once the general election has been declared, if they do it it will be breaking the law. Make a formal complaint to the DPP’s office. If they mention any one candidate in a constituency, they must by law mention the others.

    Thanks for that. It is a very strict law in the UK which is enforceable. Another flaw in our Westminster/Whitehall model.

    Special rules apply when reporting political matters during an election or referendum period. These rules are designed to ensure one party or candidate does not get an advantage over the others and exist in addition to the general rules concerning impartiality.(Quote)

    The term BANANA REPUBLIC comes to mind. Our understood rules of journalism and electioneering are obviously outdated, Barbados is much more advanced. You would have thought that a democracy desened from British Law would have had similar legislation, hmmmm.

    I don’t agree. Barbados punches above it weight and is one of the most advanced nations in the world. Our press is also superb and our institutions cutting edge..

    It does not appear to me that BIM was deliberately sidelined. It is simply that they are making no noticeable impact and are therefore easily forgotten.

    In many countries the concept of equal time for each Party contesting an Election is observed, however an Election hasn’t been called and the Nation whatever its faults doesn’t have to apologize to any potential candidate for not publishing his/her name in any article in his/her potential constituency. ( I say potential because one never knows who will pony up the deposit to contest the Election).

    Personally, I think that the Nation owes its readers an apology for an article which was written about a dispute between two neighbours concerning a dead fowl where one man was slashed by the other; the writer wrote that the dispute was about a “dead cock”.

    As they say, heavy is the head that wears the crown. Usually every opposition party { fringe groups like BIM included} reserve the ire of their spiel for the party that holds the reins of Government, rather than train their focus on fellow opponents. In the face of the glaring ineptitude that has been the hallmark of this administration’s stewardship the irregularity cannot be missed. In this regard it too appears very inconsistent with what may be deemed as best practices for adequate and objective campaigning to win. As you attempt to drag the red herring of sexual orientation across the political trail , all it takes is a modicum of common sense to recognize your motive of misogyny. A genuine love for Barbados demands a genuine effort to rid this country of today’s version of the DLP…….supporter of Motley or not. IT DOES NOT MATTER.

    Hal Austin does not live here therefore he would be unaware of CBC News every night highlighting Ministers every night regardless of if it is important or not forvthe first 15 minutes or so,with scarcely a word from the BLP on any matter.Added to this the call in program hosted by three Dems,especially the female who is quick to argue and defend the Government regardless of the issue with anyone who criticizes the Government,which is clearly biased but Mr Austin would not know this.

Namely the nightly parade of government ministers across the television screen. A decision should be made by the minister to either defund CBC or The GIS as there is duplication of purpose by one or the other. Highly unlikely when one considers that the same minister has repeatedly shown to be incapable of making ANY kind of decision in the past, up to and including when or how to set an election date.

    He has again made history by taking a country that was once “punching above its weight” to a place where it is now “weighing below its punch”. You go King Frool, you have secured your place in history and it will not be kind unless of course it is written by ex Ambassador to T&T “Mr never achieved one damned thing while there”!

    A friend told me she would vote for Natalee before political nobody Neil Holder. She admited she has never heard of Holder. She’s adamant none on the politicians he is running against are worthy of her vote. Whatever you say about the Nation the paper don’t publishit.

    I thought Mark Adamson was one of the peripheral parties who had joined up with the UPP when the likes of CAP joined up.

    Miss Eastmond gave the impression that the guy who was expelled from the UPP for advocating the legislation of marijuana was inherited from one of these entities and as such was not vetted.

    Well, that has been the only imaginatively innovative proposal coming from the UPP so far.

    All the rest of the UPP’s proposals parroted by Ms Eastmond are nothing but BLP cold soup warmed over to make it look as if the UPP was onto something new all of which can be found filed away in the various ministries and agencies mandated to create a local business environment (including the cultural industry sector) capable of operating in today’s competitively challenging world of international financial business, entertainment, sports and the arts.

    All the political parties must come to the stark realization that the use of cannabis sativa is here to stay having embedded itself in the ‘sub-culture’ among the Bajan youth and would be with them for the rest of their adult lives.

    Moreover, there is much more to cannabis than its ‘smoking’ qualities. Why not exploit its other potentially commercial qualities? Why not save annually massive amounts of foreign exchange amassed in the underground economy and used to pay for the imported marijuana?

    Isn’t the concept of ‘import substitution’ applicable to cannabis production and consumption wherein Bajans can eat not only what they grow but also grow what they want to eat for medicine to heal the growingly sick population even if some of what is consumed is exhaled as smoke?

    This must be the longest most drawn out restructuring in newspaper publishing. Instead of confusing people by rolling it out, why not announce the changes in one full flush? I have seen a number of restructurings in my time and have been involved in many myself, but this beats them all.
