Dear Sir/Madam

There is an article entitled “USA Embassy Unfairly Issues Public Health Advisory on Barbados” appearing in the “Barbados Underground.” Mention was made by various officials including the general manager (GM) of the Barbados Water Authority (BWA) and the acting chief medical officer (CMO) to the non-specific nature of the elevated microbial counts obtained by the Americans. The CMO also alluded to the fact that pseudomonas spp. are normally found in water tanks and plumbing fixtures if the levels of chlorine are depleted.

I have a few comments to make on the above. It is a fact that one would expect to find pseudomonas spp.in water tanks and plumbing fixtures since pseudomonas are capable of forming microbial biofilms and attachment to solid surfaces if cleaning in place has not been done. What was not mentioned is the fact that pseudomonas are also found associated with sewage. Also not mentioned is the fact that some pseudomonas are pathogenic to humans owing to the elaboration of enterotoxins I refer the CMO and the GM to the following articles, which they can find on the internet:

Charterization of Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO Specific Bacteriophages Isolated from Sewage Samples.

Kurman and others, 2009. American Journal of Biomedical Sciences.1 :2 :91–102.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli in Sewerage and Fresh Water. Wheater and others 1980.

Water Research : 14 :7 : 713-721.

In microbiology, elevations of microbial counts are a matter for concern. To do otherwise, one would be guilty of gross negligence. In chemical and microbial risk analysis, one is taught how to evaluate risk. Risk interpretations obviously by the Americans were found to be unacceptable in this particular case. The Americans issued the advisory to their nationals, as is their right. It is therefore silly to talk about the Americans being unfair. Should the Americans put the welfare of Barbadians above the welfare of their citizens? I really do not think so. To show how silly the above position is, on the Voice of Barbados (VOB) call-in program of 30th January 2018, there was a caller who seemed very knowledgeable. He told the moderator that as far as he was concerned, the Americans were correct in their actions. He went on to point out that on a scale of 1to 10,with 10 being the worst value, that Barbados’ water scored consistently around 9.5(with all the atrazine and fertilizers being used in agriculture one ought not to be surprised). The moderator said that he knew about the border-line nature of Barbados’ water but he was ticked off with the Americans because they made it seemed as though the whole country’s water supply was affected by the sewerage crisis. What amazed me about the whole thing was the fact that an experience journalist knew about the borderline nature of the country’s water supply and did not inform the citizenry.

This unfair talk is all about the fact that this country has been silly enough to depend mainly on tourism for developmental purposes. There is a fear that the bottom will drop out of the tourist market because of the present debacle. “Where there is no vision, the people perish” We have had leaders with limited or no vision. We are in the twenty-first century and the emphasis is still on economics, medicine, law, political science.

Sincerely

  1. Dr. Lucas has just tossed a grenade into the foxhole of those seized with a bunker mentality that the Americans are “unfairing we”. He has also put some of us on notice that all is not well with the water supply with elevated levels of chemicals mainly from Agricultural use.

Some time ago during a discussion about the quality of the drinking water the venerable “Bush Tea” implied the brains of us Northern dwellers were addled because we were imbibing crap from Lake Ontario, Bushie Welcome to the Club, if I see someone glowing in the dark no need to identify yourself.

  2. This justifies Well Well’s recommendation that Barbadians both boil and filter their drinking water. Some people castigated her and others ridiculed her by saying that she is NOT a microbiologist and did not know what she was talking about.

    Hear, hear, Well Well.

Personally, I have been boiling and filtering Barbados’ water since 2007. It just did not taste right and the stench of the chlorine made me nauseous. Every relative of mine in Barbados got filter jugs and I keep them supplied with filters as one cost $35 bajan or three for $95 from Cave Shepherd. I buy universal filters that fits the Brita and Presidents Choice jugs.

Bajans…not only SOME people…. but Dr. GP…a bajan scholar…who teaches MICROBIOLOGY in AMURCA…and who should know a hell of a lot better than the usual suspects on BU who cuss me as a matter of course, when they got nothing better to do.

Maybe GP is planning to cull Bajans…people get all kinda weird ideas.

    Lawson…no march, no willy waving.

Show consideration for others who want to discuss the important issue of sewage and water on the island.

Unfortunately, unless the electorate rids the island of the present government, an end to the current sewage mess, attaining a new and better sewage system and mantaining that sewage system adequatel going forward, will not materialize.

As we have all seen over time and now being confirmed by CDB in their analysis, any progress the island could have made over the years, was not made because of the actions and more importantly lack of, by the current government.

The current degradation to the garbage collection system, sewage system, road system and water systems is squarely the fault of government, they had available to them the means to halt the years of decay in the island’s infrastructure and refused to use it.

CDB has absolutely no reason to lie about government’s ability to access money for infrastructure repairs and maintenance of the island…

“What we are seeing now in the sewage sector a solution will take some time to be fleshed out. I know that our projects department within the bank has had very fruitful discussions with the Government about that. We stand ready, willing and able to assist once the Government has decided that this is what it wants to do. We are standing ready to assist,” Ram said.

“As it relates to other infrastructure, we have always provided resources to the Government of Barbados to have a proper road network for example, but I think at this point a lot of the issues that we are seeing relates to other greater macroeconomic fundamentals of the economy, which I think need to be sorted out first,” he added.”

  10. @ Sargeant
If you check you will see that Bushie has been saying the same thing that Dr Lucas has said.
    That is…
The Americans are right as shiite to boil their water – just as Bushie does when in Toronto.

If we have been dumb enough to put jackasses to make decisions about mixing up our sewerage and drinking water – like you all do in Toronto, then we deserve to glow in the dark, and behave stupid too…. just like wunna.

But you can count Bushie out.
Any ‘glowing’ that you may see with the bushman originates from a completely different source of imbibement.

Bushie has been wary of this developing idiocy now for DECADES….. and (like John) has taken drastic personal steps to deal with the shiite.
So Bushie is good thank you!!
    Think the Bushman just born…?

Have been saying this for years now. Barbados’s BIGGEST problem is it’s way of thinking and unfortunately EDUCATING the next generation with a 1970s mindset. The world has evolved but unfortunately our mindset has not. We still glorify Economists (who have NEVER created a single job), and other historical thinking professions like LAW and MEDICINE, that cannot advance an economy. I challenge the BU community to name a single country that has become and economic powerhouse because of its strength and reliance on LAW, MEDICINE, POLITICAL SCIENCE and ECONOMICS

That is why it makes NO difference who wins the next election. Unfortunately until we fix this core problem Barbados WILL falter. Sad as it is to say.

    Change must come

  12. A good explanation of the problem by Minister Estwick. We look forward to the backup 10 inch pump being installed asap and redundancy taken care of as promised.

Now to the hard question- why the Rh the government ignored the headsup from Mia delivered 2 years ago that the South Coast Sewage plant was under stress?

  13. Dr Lucas has here made interesting comments on
1 Finding pseudomonas spp.in water tanks and plumbing fixtures
2 pseudomonas forming microbial biofilms and attachment to solid
    surfaces.
3 the fact that pseudomonas are also found associated with sewage.
4 the fact that some pseudomonas are pathogenic to humans due to their elaboration of enterotoxins
    5 elevations of microbial counts
6 chemical and microbial risk analysis
And all the BU intelligentsia who can cuss and like to cuss GP can respond with is ”BOIL THE WATER”!
Don’t they have anything else to add?
    Watch now!

  14. @ David who wrote ” why the Rh the government ignored the headsup from Mia ?”

You already know that the Dems would not take advice from MIA.

Because the heads-up came from Mia.

Some of the political class are so idiotic that if a person from another party told them that “grass is green” they wold doubt that statement.

  16. It seems the BWA has taken a decision to launch a full blown PR campaign and spare the public the professional explanations by Joyanne Haigh. Would we have known that the 10 inch pump working the bypass failed and the nastiness leaking onto the streets is because they are using a six inch pump?

Wonder what Dr. Lucas think of test results published by the Sunday Un today, commissioned b6 them.

Have been saying this for years now. Barbados’s BIGGEST problem is it’s way of thinking and unfortunately EDUCATING the next generation with a 1970s mindset. (Quote)

This is a very perceptive observation, one that hits you while out of Barbados and looking back. It is the problem with education by rote, instead of a critical education. People repeat things like a toddler repeating poetry without questioning what it really means.
It has been around for thousands of years. It is what Plato called the allegory of the cave. The Barbadian mind-set is one-dimensional, we see differences of opinion as an invitation to fight.
