The following is Dr. Ronnie Yearwood’s column published in the Business Authority, Nation newspaper – 4 December 2017

Dr Ronnie Yearwood

Where are the big ideas in the upcoming election on governance, economy, education, energy?

What are the three big policy changes from either of the political parties? In July a group of Barbadians, what politicians like to call ‘ordinary’ Bajans got together to try to think about some of things that Barbados could do to be better.

Not once do I recall one of the suggestions was for a debushing or beautifying programme, or for road paving. Do you know why? Because we ‘ordinary’ voting Bajans think that is the job of the Government.

Perhaps start by not calling us in a derogatory way, ‘ordinary’ Bajans as if somehow there is a distance between the government and the governed. Next, as a government you cannot offer us what we should have and what you should be doing.

For the more Biblically inclined among the readership – or even if not because the Bible does have excellent lessons – it reminds me of the story of the temptation of Jesus, where the devil takes Jesus to a mountain and showed Him the kingdoms of the world which he would give Him in return if Jesus bowed
down and worshiped him. Well we know the rest of the story. Jesus did not bow down.

How can you offer something that you do not own, that is not yours to offer and frankly is already in the possession of the person you offer it to, otherwise than by trying to trick them? Not in this day in age, should we be promised and should we listen to promises that the roads will be fixed or street lights be installed, or that residents in areas unfit to live will be moved to suitable and proper housing, schools will be clean and safe places to learn, garbage will be collected, police will be on the street, road sides will be cleaned, Government buildings maintained and not left to decay at which point we waste money to build new ones to put a plaque with someone’s name, regulations enforced -and I could continue with this list. How can we be promised what is ours, how can we be promised the most basic building blocks of our country when we already own them?

I get the impression and would gladly, though I think unlikely, be corrected that our politicians are simply playing in a small sandbox in a corner and worse yet, we allow this. Anyone who knocks on your door talking about road paving programmes or street lights should be told, ‘is that not your job as a Government’, ‘what is your big idea?’ They have not stopped playing small politics and need to start thinking big.

Can we have every house in Barbados running on solar energy in a few years? Could we also in a few years go to a zero emissions society with electric cars? Can we have minimum to zero bank charges for transfers and dealing with your own money, and generally make banking more open and fairer to consumers? It is utterly unacceptable that charges exist even between the same brand-name banks to move money from one part of the Caribbean to another. I know I will be told, yes it is the same brand but the banks in each country are different. As a consumer, is that really my concern? No! I just want it fixed.

For example, how can we transform education. For years we have heard that we need to abolish the 11 plus because it breeds and perpetuates inequalities. For as many ‘bright’ students that emerge, we know our school system fails many of our children; yet we still have the system. Added to that we create more sixth form schools doing more of the same. How about liberalising the education system and introducing choice where different schools can offer different types of education? Is CXC the only form of qualification that should be available from the majority of schools, or can we have for example the International Baccalaureate as an offering, or a grade point average system? Where is the next big thing in education?

We have to think big and create new things, some which we have not even imagined yet. But we create an environment for people to imagine new ways of service delivery, energy, education, transport. Sometimes new does not mean reinventing the wheel but new applications which can be transformative.

The point is that piecemeal will not do for Barbados. It will not get us the Barbados we already own. So do not, and I say this to every politician, do not come offering the small things, the things that any responsible and good government aiming to perfect the Good Society should already be doing and as a voter we should not be asking you to do. Go to the next level. How can we innovate for example in energy, governance, education and health? If as a politician you judge yourself as seriously lacking, then do not come.

We should not be wasting seats in Parliament, as a friend last week told me, on people who are past their sell by dates. His fear which I share is that sadly we will get more of the same and as voters we may fall for the trickery that Jesus showed us not to fall for, and bow down to accept what is already ours.

  1. The BU household is very interested in the progress of the alternative energy program of government and the lack of address given by the political parties vying for Bay Street occupancy AND NGOs. While the government is to be commended for progressing a renewable energy program one senses that the policy is in lockstep with EMERA/BLP. This begs the question why the delay in pricing intermittent energy produced by householders. What does it have to do with the stalled solar power program of the BL&P located in St. Lucy. So many questions we never get the answers in our little democracy.

  2. What is the latest on the approval by the FTC to approve three pilot programmes relating to a Time-of-Use (TOU) Tariff, a Renewable Energy Rider (RER) and an Interruptible Service Rider (ISR) at BL&P/EMERA? It is interesting to listen to Minister Darcy Boyce who is happy with the progress of the renewable energy program in Barbados and line it up with Rogers of BREA. There seems to be a disconnect.

  3. The IDB post is instructive because it confirms that Caribbean islands are struggling with debt, this is not just a Barbados problem. The fact that our regional politicians continue to play the ass with this issue means we will continue to sink from base 1 to base 2. With our huge debt burden it means there is no fiscal space to develop (institutional strengthening) and maintain our infrastructure.

It further suggests, one benefit of an IMF intervention is legislated limits, versus the de-facto ones, which have no consequences to those making the fiscal decisions.
While bold, few politicians will seek legislated limits outside of being forced to do so, because it handcuffs them.

@Dr.Yearwood, you are not ‘ordinary’. One person, one vote. They are not appealing to you, nor that July group. It is far easier to get 100 ordinary votes, than 1 preferred vote.

  5. There is the known that entering an IMF program unlocks cheap funding earmaked for development. We heard just yesterday that the rules of the game do not permit small island heavily indebted states to be graduated.

Statutory heads fail to attend Solutions Barbados event

The threat of being fired was seemingly not enough to motivate the leaders of this island’s top statutory corporations to attend an ISO 9001 town hall meeting put on by the fledgling Solutions Barbados last Wednesday.

Party officials were greeted with an empty hall when they turned up at the Combermere School to present the latest quality management system standard of the Geneva, Switzerland-based International Organization for Standardization.

It was just four days prior that the leader of the two-year-old party Grenville Phillips II had told those attending the party’s public launch in Independence Square that ISO 9001, “can solve most, if not all, of our nation’s management issues”.

Therefore, he said if Solutions Barbados were elected, it would be made mandatory for the Barbados Revenue Authority, Barbados Water Authority, Licensing Authority, National Petroleum Corporation, Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Sanitation Service Authority and Transport Board to adopt this system.

“You are all on notice,” Phillips had said then in reference to the top brass of each entity.

“I am calling on you to start implementing the ISO 9001 quality management system for the benefit of your long-suffering employees and the long-suffering public or your contracts will not be renewed in a Solutions Barbados administration,” he added.

However, the tough talk seemed to have little sway on the management of these entities, as Wednesday’s event had to be postponed due to a no show by members of the target audience with organizers promising to broadcast it at a later date on Facebook.

A disappointed Phillips chided the executives, arguing that they would much rather spend large sums of money to learn the very same material that his party was offering free of cost.”

And since then, it appeared as though her party and constituents were ready to move on to life after Mara Thompson in the ruling Democratic Labour Party (DLP) stronghold.

However, amid whispers within the DLP ranks that Thompson was still in the race, Barbados TODAY reached out to the St John incumbent today in a bid to set the record straight on whether she was contesting the next election, and was surprisingly told by Thompson that what was recently “announced” in the Nation newspaper was nothing short of “nonsense”.

“What was put in the paper [Nation newspaper] was definitely very wrong,” she said, before quickly excusing herself from the conversation.”

  10. Oh Jesus Christ!

When we see this preponderance of dribble we must know that elections are a-coming. The sophistry by Walter Blackman and Ronnie Yearwood.

We wonder if it has occurred to this here pseudo-intellectual that debushing (Bushie) and beautifying never seems to be aimed at the corporate elites – the rassssoul White people, the fucking Indians etc. Can these fuckers not ever be debushed?

Neither one of the miscreants following in successive threads dare call out the White people and their consorts by name, with consistency.

And analyze how public wealth is being so consolidated. This has to be the master narrative. Everything else is bullshit or bushie shiiite!

They will make jabs at the people generally. At the public servants specifically. Even at the political class itself. But never do these fuckers provide any enduring critique of the beneficiaries of mass dispossession currently going on in Barbados.

Within a few years there will be no public wealth left, at current rates of depletion. And we have a here a forum for mis-educated cuntholes to talk shiiiite.

These credentialed cowards will never face off against rassssssssssoul Kiffin Simpson, Butch Stewart or stinking Cow and Bizzy Williams.

These are the people who have corrupted the elites in politics and the civil service. And thus corrupted the society more generally.

One of the writers to whom we refer was the bitch for Charles Herbert at BMLAS, despite his supposedly superior credentials at the time.

And the other gives the air of what the women said was a handsome Hilary Beckles – flattering to deceive. We believe would settle for the post of sophisticated pimp – pimping!

In neither case would these inheritors of the party political bug point a finger at the local Whites and the foreign corporate elites.

For them, highlighting the activities of the corporatists would be biting the hand that feeds.

We have previously consign anybody and everybody within these class formations and those aspirants to a date with the guillotine.

We do not recognize their right to exist!

  11. I like Ronnie, but he’s being a tad disingenuous by describing himself as one of the “ordinary people”. He contested the nomination for a political party’s candidacy and therefore is a politician! It seems like even politicians want to distance themselves from what they are–politicians. He has raised some interesting points though.

In the Judaeo- Christian religious system Satan’s remit is to test. It is man’s responsibility to take and pass the tests. Tests are usually fair.
Transferring that allegory to the political scene :” We will fulfill all these promises if you vote for us.” The choice is that of the electorate. They will take all the information that is necessary for decision making and cast their vote accordingly. As we have done in the past.

The judgement as to whether the promises are reasonable and deliverable is that of the electorate. Nothing is going to change that in the immediate future.

  14. William Skinner December 5, 2017 at 9:40 AM #

William, you are preaching to closed minds. The BLP and DLP are two denominations in the same church (Catholics and Protestants). .. There is no ideological difference between the two. It is one of personalities – the Pope and the Archbishop.

  15. It seems that the author of this article went to Sunday school or had a fleeting acquaintance with the account recorded in Luke 4 and Mathew 4, he has clearly missed the point of these passages which prove the Biblical truth presented in Hebrews 4:15 that Christ was tempted in all points as we are, yet with out sin.

However, this passage has nothing to do with what is going on in Barbados. We chose to put the Bible and its demands out of our daily lives, and only cite sporadic areas quoted out of context, and thus wrongly divided to suit our purposes. Hilarious!

    Hal
Whereas it is true that there is no ideological difference between Catholics and Anglicans there is certainly many ideological and theological differences between Catholics and Protestants, as is clearly revealed by a PROPER study of Church History.

I think William knows that. With all humility, he also knows that the NDP was cast in the same mould. But will not admit it. The electorate knows that all the other parties are made out of the same khaki cloth. The electorate choice has always been based on the leadership capabilities of the parties.

The Judaeo- Christian God is not dead,by definition . Therefore there is no separation of God from what is going on in Barbados now. I believe that is an axiom. It cannot be proved or disproved.
It would be useful to draw meaning within the context in which the author uses it. There is no meaningful difference between Protestants and Roman Catholics. I am at home in both. I am even at home in some Hindu gatherings. We are all on the same train so to speak.

The connecting thread in Barbados Politics is Capitalism wit a large dose of Social Democracy. The size of the dose depends on whether one uses a soup spoon or a teaspoon.

  18. @ Bernard Codrington

If you were to read my posts , you would know that I have never argued or presented that the NDP was any significant departure from the BLPDLP. My position was then and remains that the BLPDLP has had more than enough time to bring the country to another stage. The problem I have with die-hard supporters is that they want to convince others that there is no way any other party should be given a serious look. Any careful analysis of the problems we face , will clearly show that both parties are responsible for our current predicament. As Dr. Yearwood, who I understand, tried to be a BLPDLP candidate, is now stating that the parties have no “big” ideas. The same cold soup warmed over. It therefore shows that even those who want to represent the BLPDLP, are doing so in the full knowledge , that they are bankrupt of any ideas.
On a personal note, I will like you to read the NDP manifesto of 1991, the election I contested. and note that Integrity legislation; the call for a Contractor General were a part of that document. Also, all the candidates had to sign the manifesto because we considered it a social contract with the people. All of our signatures were therefore in the manifesto.
So, I remain. convinced as I did over twenty five years ago, that the country will be better served with a new party at the helm. It remains the most progressive manifesto since independence.
I will continue to encourage the electorate to dump the BLPDLP.

  19. Nothing more comical than Hal and William accusing political parties of being bereft of ideas. I don’t recall Skinner presenting anything of much substance, and few months ago Hal accused Ryan Straughn of tiefin his idea. Dah “idea” is no longer valid?😂😂

It’s amazing how so-called educated people could fall so easily into believing such a tall tale of a concocted story.

The question to be asked is if this story is really a recording of the ‘facts’, who else was there to hear the conversation between a Yahweh-created devil and a recently baptized eponymous lonely man called Yeshua who disappeared into the mountain of wilderness looking for his predecessors Moses and Isaiah?

Why was the conversation reported ‘verbatim’ unless it was manufactured in the wild imagination of some storyteller or writer who plagiarized it from the Egyptian mythology of Horus?

You want to believe in this tale of go(o)d versus (d)evil as the ‘Gospel’ but passionately reject the Greek stories of the Twelve Labours of Heracles, Icarus or Narcissus.

Does the below extract sound ‘familiar to you Biblical scholars?

“When Set heard of the birth of the child, and knowing who the child belonged to, he immediately ordered the child be killed. There was a warning given to Isis by the gods to get herself and Horus out of Egypt. Horus is said to have been revealed his purpose at the age of 12… and a significant amount of time about him is unknown until the age of thirty. He kept a select number of people very close to him, and was subject to temptation for a period of time from Set, who led him to a mountaintop and offered him equal ruling in Egypt if he would stand behind him… which Horus refused. After this time, he was said to teach a message of brotherhood and compassion for fellow man, and was highly respected by the people… and feared by those who wanted the power for themselves.”

  24. MR CODRINGTON SIR

NOTE THAT THE AUTHOR IN HIS EXPOSITION PREFACED HIS REMARKS ABOUT THE TEMPTATION WITH ” TO THE BIBLICALLY INCLINED”

BELOW I HAVE POSTED A NOTE ON THIS PASSAGE BY DAVID GUZICK

THIS IS WHAT IS MEANT BY RIGHTLY DIVIDING THE WORD OF TRUTH

PERHAPS LATER I MIGHT POST SOMETHING I WROTE IN 2000 ON THE SAME TOPIC

Matthew 4 – The Temptation of Jesus and His First Galilean Ministry

    A. Jesus’ temptation

(1-2) Jesus is led to the place of temptation
    a. After identifying with sinners in His baptism, Jesus now identifies with them in severe temptation – a necessary part of His ministry, so He truly was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness
    i. Jesus did not need to be tempted to help Him “grow”; instead, He endured temptation both so He could identify with us (Hebrews 2:18, 4:15), and to demonstrate His own holy, sinless character
ii. The Holy Spirit cannot tempt us (James 1:13); but we may be led by the Holy Spirit to a place where we are tempted – not to prove anything to God (who knows all things), but to prove something to us and to onlooking spiritual beings

    b. Temptation is a certainty for all; yet Jesus’ temptation was more severe for many reasons: He was tempted directly by Satan himself (we contend mainly with lesser demons); and since temptation is only “relieved” by giving in, and Jesus never did, He bore levels of temptation we will never know by experience
    c. Matthew points out both the barren desert (the Judean wilderness was just that), and Jesus’ severe physical condition after such a long fast; it is said that when hunger pains return after such a fast (He was hungry), it is an indication that the subject is beginning to starve to death

    d. The period of forty days and forty nights is a familiar period of testing in the Bible – both in the days of Noah, and for Israel in the wilderness; Jesus is going to succeed where Israel as a nation failed

(3-4) The first temptation: an appeal to the lust of the flesh
    a. Matthew tells us when the tempter came; in our lives, it is not a question of if the tempter will come, but when he will come
    b. The question asked by Satan is more literally since You are the Son of God, not if You are the Son of God; Satan is not questioning Jesus’ deity, he is challenging Him to prove it

    c. This is a solicitation to use God’s gifts for selfish purposes; Satan wants Jesus to use His miraculous powers to feed Himself

    i. Who could fault Jesus for doing such a thing? Yet, He will not, especially at the instigation of Satan
ii. Jesus lays out a system of priorities that challenges us: every word that proceeds from the mouth of God is to be more precious to us than food itself

    d. By relying on the power and truth of God’s Word, Jesus was willing to fight this battle as a man; He could have easily rebuked Satan into another galaxy, but resisted Him in a way that we can imitate and identify with
    3. (5-7) The second temptation: an appeal to the pride of life
    a. Satan is tempting Jesus to “force” the Father into a supernatural event; Satan is appealing to the desire within every man to sense approval from God and to have that approval publicly demonstrated
    i. The pinnacle of the temple arose some 200 feet; a leap from there, and the appearance of the promised angelic protection would be quite a show!
ii. Jesus just had such a spectacular demonstration at His baptism (Matthew 3:17); but that must have seemed far away after forty days and nights of fasting in the wilderness

    b. We notice that the devil quotes Scripture; he has memorized the Bible himself, and is an expert at quoting it out of its context to confuse and defeat the subjects of his temptation
    i. Sadly, many are willing to believe anyone who quotes from the Bible today; you can say pretty much whatever you want, and if you quote a few “proof-texts,” people will assume that you are really speaking from the Bible
    c. Jesus replies with Scripture, but applied correctly – “forcing” the Father into such a demonstration would be tempting God, which the Scriptures strictly forbid
    i. This warns us against demanding something “spectacular” from God to “prove” His love or concern for us; He has already given the ultimate demonstration of His love for us at the cross (Romans 5:8), and He can do nothing more “spectacular” than that!
    4. (8-11) The third temptation: an appeal to the lust of the eyes
    a. Essentially, this vision was an invitation to shortcut the cross: Jesus came to win these things back from Satan’s domain, and Satan offers them to Jesus, if He will only worship him
    i. It again may seem a small thing; Jesus could lay claim to all the kingdoms of the world and their glory, and do so without enduring the cross – all He would have to do is give Satan what he has been longing for ever since he fell: worship and recognition from God Himself
ii. This is a revealing insight into Satan’s heart; worship and recognition are far more precious to him than the possession of the kingdoms of the world and their glory; he is still the one who said I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God; I will also sit on the mount of the congregation on the farthest sides of the north; I will ascend above the heights of the clouds, I will be like the Most High. (Isaiah 14:13-14)

    b. Evidently, Satan has authority over this world and its governments; the temptation could not have been real unless there is some real sense that Satan does “possess” all the kingdoms of the world and their glory
    i. That authority was given to Satan by Adam and his descendants; God gave Adam the earth as a stewardship, and Adam willingly turned it over to Satan – and all Adam’s descendants have “approved” of that decision in one manner or another!
ii. Of course, ultimately, all things belong to God; but God allows Satan to function as the god of this age (2 Corinthians 4:4) for a purpose – that is the reason the world is as it is!

    c. Jesus replies with Scripture again, and commands the devil to leave – even as we can resist the devil and he will flee from you (James 4:7)
    d. God never forsakes those who endure through temptation; even as angels came and ministered to Jesus, God will find a way to minister to us and meet our needs as we endure temptation

    Observations
    a. Notice the mode of Satan’s attack: the use of lies and deception; primarily, Satan is a deceiver, and for those who live in light of the cross, it is his only tool, having been disarmed at the cross of his “real” weapons and power (Colossians 2:15)
    i. But deception is extremely effective at leading us into sin, and at causing us to live lives of fear and unbelief
    b. Jesus showed the only effective counter to deception: God’s truth, not man’s wisdom
    i. First, see temptation for what it is: a lie
ii. Then, combat temptation with the word of God

iii. Build yourself up in the truth – have it in your heart

    c. Each passage Jesus quoted back to Satan in this section comes from Deuteronomy chapters 6 and 8; Jesus was probably meditating on those very passages, and He fought Satan with the “fresh bread” He had been feeding on – make sure that you always have some “fresh bread” to answer Satan with!
